The media product represents different social groups by featuring a band with members of diverse ethnicities, including an Asian lead to highlight the increasing diversity in rock music. The models were chosen to have mixed expressions and no clear facial expressions to appear mysterious. Though the shirt featured is from Hollister, a branded clothing company, it was used to potentially attract audiences interested in fashion from various genres and social groups. The main artists in the band are men to target a mainly male audience that could connect with male artists, and masculine text and colors were used to clearly signal the magazine's focus on male interests.
1. Evaluation
Question 2
-how does your media product represent different social
groups?
2. I decided to pick three
models with completely
contrasting ethnicities to
indicate music of modern
society is highly
multicultural furthermore I
picked my model of Asian
ethnicity to be the lead of
my band to emphasise the
rise of other races
specifically in Rock as a
whole, which began as a
heavily white influenced
genre.
3. Mixed expression
(rather happy, serious
and neutral) indicates a
mixture of
personalities. They also
have no facial
expressions as I wanted
them to look
mysterious and so their
facial expressions and
personalities would
have to be hard to read.
For people who are
independent, more for
people in their own
accommodation but can
be read by younger (no
less then 16)
4. Although this is a
‘Hollister’ branded shirt
and may not represent the
rock genre, I thought it
would be a good
opportunity to attract other
genres and also social
groups interested in
fashion. This would
broaden my target
audience as more people
may be interested by what
my magazine and artists
have to offer for the
current rock genre
represented in my
magazine.
5. The main artists of my band
all consist of men. This is
because my target audience
is mainly of the male
gender so I thought by
having my artists as men, it
would attract them in a way
in which male readers
would feel they are able to
connect with them. The text
I used throughout is also
quite bold and harsh to
represent masculinity. The
colours are also masculine
coded to enable my
magazine to be recognised
as one targeted mainly at
the interest of men.
