The media product represents youths and females in particular ways. It portrays British teenagers as successful rather than disruptive, and shows females as more dominant in the music industry than males. This suggests teenagers are not all unsuccessful and women can do well in rock music. The dress, location, colors and fonts represent rock music values. Some social groups are absent, including the elderly, disabled and upper classes, as they are not typically associated with the rock genre and their inclusion may lose the target audience's interest. The absent groups indicates they are not viewed as important in society or even considered.
1. Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2. Representations. I have represented youths as successful, which makes a change from the generalised stereotype of British teenagers as disruptive youths who try to go against society. I also think I have represented females as maybe more dominant than males in the music industry, as usually you see more male artists on front covers of this genre. Females are seen a lot in other genres such as dance and pop.
3. The messages and values that I have communicated about teens and females through media language suggest that British teenagers are not all unsuccessful and uninterested in working towards future careers, as well as implying that women can do as well as men in the industry. The dress, location, colour scheme and fonts all represent values in the rock music genre. They don’t necessarily denote success at first glance.
4. There are some absent representations. I haven’t missed them out on purpose, it’s just that they don’t first come to mind when you think about this genre. The absent representations include: Elderly - This social group are not really thought to be included in the rock genre. Disabled – There are hardly any famous disabled artists, and to put them on the front of the magazine may lose the target audience’s interest. Upper classes – I think these are more associated with music such as jazz and classical. This can show that these absent groups are not considered as very important in our society, or not even thought of.
