The document compares a real magazine called Mixmag to a magazine design project. It discusses similarities and differences between their color schemes, layouts, and design elements. Both magazines use bright colors and imagery to represent the electronic music genre. However, the real magazine has a more cluttered layout while the project magazine keeps things simpler with a central image. The document also analyzes how specific design choices like column structure, title placement, and use of images relate back to the target audiences for each magazine.
2. • The real media product contains a vibrant colour scheme of pink, yellow and black. This
contrasts with the colour scheme I used as it has a bright yellow and purple/pink for the front
cover, with darker text for the main titles and top and bottom. The Mixmag magazine is of
the same genre that My magazine was aiming for, so the use of the bright colour scheme
relates well to the genre, the use of the yellow and purple are representative of the lights
that would be within a night club, and the black contrasting as the darkness without the light.
This can be compared with my piece as it contains the light and dark colours, to also mimic
the nightclub scene, and that remains relevant to the music genre. The main title is in the
boldest font, spreading across the page, this shares similarities with the front cover I
designed. It remains spread across the centre of the page, showing how it is the main article
and how it will be used. In Mixmag, it is the same colour as the masthead, unlike mine which
contains the same colour as the jacket of the main character, This is because the name
“slyther” has connotations of green, snakes and slime. This is shown with the jacket and
therefore was relevant to have it as the colour to the main title. The background for the
Mixmag magazine is like a sun coming over the hill, portraying the genre of music to “last all
night long” also showing the genre will be continuous. This can be mirrored in my piece as
the darkened background with the light shining over the main person’s shoulder is like a
strobe light in a nightclub. The main build up of the mixmag magazine is very cluttered and
busy, whereas my piece is very simple, with the picture central and the different stories
shaping around his face.
3. • The title of mixmag relates to the genre as “mix” is what would be done to
keep the songs within the genre in a loop, for example all dubstep is
around 140bpm to help mix well. This links to my magazine as “pyro-lite”
shows connotations of flames and lighting, much like in a night club, the
use of “lite” as a misspelling works well for modern slang and the age of
the people stereotypically listening to the musical genre. The use of
anchorage above the masthead is a way to draw in the reader, without
giving away too much information. This is used in my piece, much like the
real media product. A plug is used to show a freebie, and it seems stuck
onto the magazine, this is done by placing a “splat” on my front cover to
seem more in the face of the reader and make them want to buy it more.
The real media product contains a bar code as it is a legal requirement on
a magazine. It also is used in my magazine to show that it can be
commercially available. The camera work on the real media product looks
at a dance move, considered to be very wild, and associated with the
target audience and the genre of music, whereas the image I used
contains connotations of being humble and having power over the
audience.

5. The real media product contains the main information on the left
column of text, this then shapes the contents page to use more
images to flesh out the page. My piece splits the text into 2
different columns, one for the contents of the magazine, but
then another for the special contents of the page, which would
be used to draw the reader in further. The use of “contents”
helps to set the page and introduce the content of the magazine.
I used this in mine for the same reason. In the real media
product, they contain a snapshot of the front cover, this is to
mirror or to link the front cover, to some of the contents page.
The Mixmag magazine has the titles of the articles, with the
smaller writing underneath helps to describe what is going to be
in the article, I didn’t use that in mine as the selected target
audience aren’t too interested about text on the contents, and
would rather get into the articles about their favourite bands.
The use of large numbering helps to highlight and easily show
which page each separate article is to be on.
6. • The real media product has a main image, with sub images
underneath, on the pictures, they have the numbers to indicate
what page they are to be on. On mine I used 2 different pictures
rather than many sub images, so the focus isn’t drawn too much
from the text. I also used the numbers to show what page the
articles are going to be on, as it is easier for the readers. Mixmag
magazine maintains its colour scheme in the contents page using
pink, black, white and some forms of yellow. I also used this in my
piece to help keep consistency from the main colour scheme. The
use of a gradient effect on the background is used to fade into the
images, as if it were “leaking” onto the page making it somewhat 3
dimensional. The images used in my contents page show the
musical genre in the way it is stereotyped, for example the top right
picture is of raving in a night club. The image contains editing to
have a strobe lighting effect on the clothing to help exaggerate the
genre of music.

8. • The real media product still contains its bright, vibrant colour scheme of
black, pink, yellow and white, this is still apparent with my article still using
black, purple and shades of yellow. The main title in the real media product is
placed in the top left corner, this is because the readers eyes go directly to that
position, meaning that it will be easier for the consumer to read. On mine the
main story is placed across the centre of the page, this shows an importance to the
story by having it in such a large font and drawing the readers eye sight to the
story. The use of columned text is conventional to a magazine or a read article.
This is used both in the real media product and my product as it sticks with these
conventions. The use of the images in the real media link back to the genre of the
magazine, they show wild images that can represent nightclubs, and that links to
the music often played in nightclubs. In my images, they focus more on the artist
side of productions, rather than the fan side, for example having the main image
from the back, overlooking, giving connotations of power. The side articles use a
similar font to each other as a way of keeping continuity. I used this in my piece to
help with structure, the colouring of the first title is different however as it relates
to the main image, and the colour scheme of the artist text.
