  1. David Kolb, explains how students learn from experience. “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.” Kolb's experiential learning style theory is typically represented by a four stage learning cycle in which the learner 'touches all the bases':
  2. I learned to speak Spanish and to appreciate the culture, language, and traditions of Mexico. In 1976, I was invited as a “hostess” at the Ontario Yachting events to translate for the Latin American Sailors.
  3. Then I travelled back to Mexico and married a Mexican Dairy Farmer whom I had met in Canada. Here I am with my first rural school and first feeding project.
  4. Because of my language skills, I was invited to Guatemala on a Fulbright Scholarship for six weeks.
  5. Because of my international experience, Rotary also selected me as Team Leader to travel to India, accompanying four young American professionals, to experience with profession in India. I learned about public health, writing grants, and silk farming.
  6. Here I applied my public health knowledge to address the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis along the northern Mexico border region.
  7. Then off to Honduras to work with a maternal and child health project in 229 rural villages, promoting the engagement of men in family health. Here I was teaching the community leaders about the power of vision: building a rural health clinic.
  8. Recently, I became a technical advisor to the Rotary Foundation to review a maternal and child health project in Nicaragua.
  9. And in March visited a nutrition project in rural Guatemala.
  10. In Guatemala, the women talked to me about their dreams and the power of drawing what you want. This woman wanted a lovely home, healthy children to attend school, and an income from her business of jewelry making.
  11. So that is my story. Much of my life’s successes can be drawn from the lessons learned as a youth exchange student from 1970. Longevity and hindsight provide a special perspective…
