In the health care industry quality of care means everyone participating in ways to improve health care such as health care professionals, patients and their families, researchers, payers, planners and educators. These changes lead to better outcomes in health, a better system performance in care, as well as better professional development.
When you describe quality, it’s the process for making strategic choices in health systems for quality assurance in health care and decision making. Although there are many outcomes to improve quality of care, the main concern is accomplishing a goal that will be beneficial for the future.
Good quality means providing patients with appropriate services in a technically competent manner, with good communication, shared decision making, and cultural sensitivity. In practical terms, poor quality can mean too much care (e.g., providing unnecessary tests, medications, and procedures, with associated risks and side effects), too little care (e.g., not providing an indicated diagnostic test or a lifesaving surgical procedure), or the wrong care (e.g., prescribing medicines that should not be given together, using poor surgical technique).
Quality can be evaluated based on structure, process, and outcomes (Donabedian 1980). Structural quality evaluates health system characteristics, process quality assesses interactions between clinicians and patients, and outcomes offer evidence about changes in patients' health status. All three dimensions can provide valuable information for measuring quality, but the published quality-of-care literature reveals that there is more experience with measuring processes of care.

To many health care consumers quality of health care can mean several different things, including wait times, doctors professionalism, the courtesy of the medical staff and use of updated medical technology, which can all effect how people judge the quality of health care they are receiving. These characteristics may be important to the patient but they do not add up to a quality health care system. Quality health care can be defined as levels of superiority which distinguish the health care provided based on accepted standards of quality. Several factors help measure quality of care:
* Safety- health care does not cause harm
* Effective- health care service is based on scientific and medical knowledge and is right for the.

Regulations in Long-Term Care
There are many federal and state regulations when it comes to long-term care. Using scholarly sources and the Internet research any four specific regulations related to long-term care and summarize them.
Based on the regulations you identified, respond to the following questions:
· What are the benefits and shortcomings of your identified regulations? Which of these shortcomings have an effect on the quality and the cost of health care services? How?
· Do you believe there is a link between regulations and better care? Why or why not?
· Why do you think long-term care services are subjected to so much external control by government agencies? Provide a rationale for your responses.
· How is quality measured in long-term care? Is there only one, or are there several approaches to measure quality? What are they? Who should be given the responsibility to measure quality?
Notes from class
The increasing need for long-term care has caused several public and private agencies to participate in its managing process. These public and private agencies are increasingly attempting to control costs, providing protection to consumers considered unable to protect themselves. Public controls are nonvoluntary and are imposed by government agencies through the implementation of laws and regulations. Private controls are provided by nongovernment agencies and organizations, and compliance is voluntary.
Public Control
Public control on long-term care is imposed by federal, state, or local (including county and municipal) government units. These units set laws, regulations, and standards to be followed by long-term facilities in order to:
· Give better care facilities to the poor, who are unable to take care of themselves, by making them formal or informal wards of the state.
· Provide quality health care facilities to consumers.
· Create awareness in consumers regarding the types of services provided in the facilities and let the consumers themselves judge the quality of the services.
· Set the minimum level of staffing, cleanliness, and safety, ensuring consumers needing long-term care are treated properly and receive the necessary services.
· Follow all long-term care regulations to provide quality care.
Private Control
Besides government agencies, several private organizations are involved in managing long-term care. Both public and private control focus on long-term care organizations as well as the individuals in those organizations. The only difference is public control can maintain both the cost and the quality of care, while private care can focus only on measuring, evaluating, and ensuring the quality of care.
Private control agencies focusing on the quality of care of long-term organizations are known as accreditation bodies, while those ...

Scenario A specialty memory chip manufacturer is located in South.docxkenjordan97598
Scenario: A specialty memory chip manufacturer is located in Southern California with manufacturing plants located in the United States, Europe, Singapore, and Japan. Additionally, it has branch sales offices located in major metropolitan areas across the globe. The market for its six key products included original equipment manufacturers of personal computers, cellular telephone manufacturers, electronics distributors, and government organizations. The market environment for its products is extremely volatile with fluctuating demand and rapidly changing prices. The company uses short-term contracts (less than 1 month) and spot pricing for irregular customers. Internally, the operation is capital-intensive with depreciation running approximately $1.2 million per day (depreciation has an impact on revenue streams). The 6 key products had further specialized components, making the possible line mix total 24 distinct products. Further, the manufacturing process required high manufacturing lead times and various product yields. In the high technology memory arena, product life cycles were dramatically shortened because of rapid obsolescence. To coordinate the manufacturing activity, the company has an established process and system that helped optimize resource utilization, improve shop floor efficiencies, and manage customer demand.
The company is experiencing 10–15% growth in revenues and volume, primarily tied to increased worldwide demand, product type, and market variables. Most significantly, the company received a major preorder for a new cellular phone memory chip that is scheduled to come out in 3 months. This preorder is scaled for up to 10 million units, and management is concerned that the existing process and system may not be suitably optimized for this order. Additionally, the forecast in sales figures for all six key product lines is higher than it has been in the past. With the increase in volume, management is concerned about the quality management process as well—can the existing processes maintain the highest degree of quality needed?
As a new member of the production planning management staff, you will be expected to help develop strategies to support the expanded growth plans. Your team faces several fundamental issues. First, are the individual plant layouts conducive to the expanded growth expected by the company? Second, are individual plant layouts optimized for the most efficient performance and lowest cost? Third, is the existing supply chain interaction among all the various components optimized in the same manner individual layouts are expected to be optimized? Finally, your group must consider capacity planning and workflow to ensure the company can meet its contractual obligations with the maximum revenue and profitability. It currently uses information systems developed by the company to conduct production planning. You believe that a fully integrated enterprise resource planning tool or specific production plann.

INTRODUCTION
Quality health care “means doing the right thing at the right time, in the right way, for the right person, and getting the best possible results.”1 The term quality, by definition, can mean excellence, status, or grade; thus, it can be measured and quantified. The patient, and perhaps the patient's family, may interpret quality health care differently from the way that health care providers interpret it. Therefore, it is important to determine—if possible—what is “right” and what is “wrong” with regard to quality health care. The study and analysis of health care are important to maintain a level of quality that is satisfactory to all parties involved. As a result of the current focus on patient safety, and in an attempt to reduce deaths and complications, providing the best quality health care while maintaining cost controls has become a challenge to all involved. Current quality initiatives are multifaceted and include government-directed, private sectorsupported, and consumer-driven projects.
This chapter explores the historical development of health care quality including a review of the important pioneers and the tools they developed. Their work has been studied, refined, and widely used in a variety of applications related to performance-improvement activities. Risk management is discussed, with emphasis on the importance of coordination with quality activities. The evolution of utilization management is also reviewed, with a focus on its relationship to quality management.
In addition, this chapter explores current trends in data collection and storage, and their application to improvements in quality care and patient safety. Current events are identified that influence and provide direction to legislative support and funding. This chapter also provides multiple tips and tools for both personal and institutional use.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Quality And Quantity At Kudler Fine Foods
1. Quality and Quantity at Kudler Fine Foods
Introduction
Kudler Fines Foods founded in 1998 and is growing rapidly. When they open their first store,
Microsoft Access was selected as the database to track inventory, orders, and customers. The
products, they sold are perishable and inventory must be properly tracked. Kudler excessive
inventory is always a concern. This paper will evaluate database tables from accounting perspective,
provide recommendation for improvement and create pivot table to help Kudler's management to
improve decision making process.
Evaluate the design elements of the data tables from an accounting perspective. First, the table
organizes the financial data into department, then financial account codes, items, and then sums the
total amount of transactions for the code. Then counts how many quantities of the items were in
inventory during the period. Second, this design maximizes the visual and informational
presentation for the financial data. Given this design, the user of the information can readily identify
what items belong to a certain department, and how many items were in to arrive at the total cost for
a particular item for the period. Third, given the presentation of the total amount and quantity on
hand for an item, the information user can easily calculate the effective average purchase price for
an item. Recommend improvements to the data table The data tables, specifically the Pivot table,
may be improved on by arranging the codes chronologically; sort the data by compiling

3. The Quality Of Life Of Sumner House
This research project explored the quality of life of Sumner House residents utilizing the capability
approach and addressed these questions: what opportunities residents have to live a life they truly
value and how they perceive their quality of life at Sumner House. Based on six individual
interviews, this study identified a number of key capabilities for quality of life perceived by Sumner
House residents including being healthy, receiving a high quality of care, being safe, being
independent and autonomous, having a social life, and conducting meaningful activities. The
research findings suggested that Sumner House provides residents with a range of opportunities to
achieve lives they have reason to value, especially capabilities for control over life and occupation.
Overall, interviewees expressed positive comments about their quality of life.
Interpretation of findings
Some of the research findings further support those arguments about the quality of life for older
adults in earlier studies. First of all, the value of bodily health is evident from the research. All
participants wish to keep as healthy as they can. Health condition is regarded to be linked to other
valued capabilities such as safety and independence. Therefore, Sumner House should continue to
enhance residents' capability for health and delay the decline. Secondly, in accordance with results
of previous research, there is an evidence to show that residents can be taken care of well at Sumner

Abstract
Purpose – This study aims to explore the potential dimensions of service quality, and examine the
relationship among service quality, food quality, perceived value, customer satisfaction and

Specifically, another potential dimension, recovery, is incorporated into the SERVPERF instrument.
After establishing sufficient reliability and validity of this instrument, we proceed with the second
objective – to examine the relationship among service quality, food quality, perceived value,
customer satisfaction, and behavioral intentions. The organization of this paper includes another five
sections. The theoretical foundation of perceived service quality and its dimensions are reviewed in
the next section, followed by the research methodology including the development of the
instrument. Then, the data analysis and findings of this study are presented, followed by the
conclusions and managerial implications. The paper concludes with a section on the limitations of
this work and potential future research. 2. Theoretical foundation The importance of service quality
is substantially addressed in the fast–food management literature. Superior service leads to satisfied
and loyal customers whose continued patronage is essential to the success of FFRs. Conversely,
poor service quality increases customer dissatisfaction and the likelihood that customers dine at a
competitor's FFR and/or become an active champion in persuading others to go elsewhere (Gilbert
et al., 2004). Hence, it is crucial for service managers to understand how customers perceive the
service they provide, and what components might determine

9. Manual vs. Automated Statistical Process Control: Food...
Israel Ortega–Ramos
The Prime Example
Our recent visit to a food packaging plant in New Jersey highlighted the inconsistent results of
statistical process control routinely faced by Quality Control Managers. Product weight readings
were taken from the manufacturing floor, entered into an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed. The
results produced no predictable under or over filling trend despite the fact that the same people used
the same scales at the same time of day. The problem is simple and fundamental. Human error is an
inevitable part of the process of collecting statistical data. This is consistently overlooked in
companies that utilize manual SPC[1] (statistical process control) for their manufactured goods. To
ensure the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The scale will then calculate the statistical data after the last product is placed on the scale and store
this data in a password–protected memory for collection by the Quality Manager. This statistical
data can then be sent wirelessly to a spreadsheet, printed on a label to accompany the sampled
product, or simply viewed on the scale interface. The flow diagram below shows the improved SPC
process.
Companies can also utilize various connectivity and software options that can integrate filling
machines to automated SPC scale systems. This means that fill volumes based on trends calculated
by the scale can be adjusted via an automated system. Quality Control Managers and Plant
Managers can also connect all the SPC scale systems in a factory via a central control computer that
will provide easy access to "real–time" data. Integrating an automated SPC Scale System into a
manufacturing environment will have the following advantages over the older manual SPC systems:
Upgrading outdated manual SPC processes is the first step to improve overall quality, efficiency,
and trace ability. This can be accomplished with as little as $5,000 in capital investment. Quality
Control Managers and Plant managers have to take a hard look at how their product samples are
being weighed and how these measurements are turned into results that can improve production line
efficiency. It is now time for

Competitive Analysis
Restaurants
Advertising
Advertising is the use of mass media content with the intent to persuade audiences into taking action
on products, services, and ideas. This factor measures how heavily the competitor is engaged in
promotional efforts in terms of budget and reach when compared to the competitor 's sales and
market.
Advertising will be a source of competitive advantage for Taste Houston. By utilizing a large budget
generated from 7% of the tenant 's sales, Taste Houston will be able to reach audiences through
mediums that many small restaurants either ignore or can 't afford. Taste Houston will conduct a
largely annual advertisement campaign through traditional advertisement mediums to inform
consumers of the facility 's opening, and its change in tenants in subsequent years. Online forms of
advertisement, including search engine optimization, paid ads, and social media content, will be
continued throughout the year to uphold a visible presence in the eyes and minds of consumers. Due
to budget limitations, however, traditional medium forms such as television, newspaper, radio,
magazines, billboards and the like will be restricted to one month terms, with the annual advertising
campaign spanning from 1 to 3 months. Social media content, as free to cheap marketing tool, will
be utilized to keep Taste Houston forefront in the minds of consumers, giving them a daily view of
the business, its industry, its community, and even its consumers.

[By doing so, customers ultimately get better value, therefore each member of the supply chain
gains competitive advantage.] Pars Food Ltd currently outsources their raw materials, therefore they
have looked at sourcing their own potatoes with their own transport. Due to high amounts of quality
rejection of frozen chips, they would like to reduce this, thus, having their own transport means they
are now in control of how their raw materials get to their factories and therefore can monitor quality
more closely, ultimately improving it. In terms of investing in storage and improving customer
satisfaction and zero complaint levels; Jane William's Idea of using the Just in Time method may
achieve this, by having their own transport they have control over how reliable the supply is and
communication should not be a problem. Therefore products can be made as they are needed and
their won't be as much need for storage e.g. "Stake Cut Chips" which have been left in storage for 2
months and not shifted.
Overall, I feel Pars Food Ltd has used Quality Management and Supply chain management
effectively in order to achieve their long term objectives. They implemented strategies such as total
quality management which means that all employees were now liable for the quality of their
products and not just the managers. In a sense, this empowers the employees as they now feel they

25. The Man Who Helped Shape The World
The father of quality evolution, the man who helped shape the world, William Edwards Deming,
was born on the month of October 14, 1900 in the city of Sioux, Iowa. His family raised him in this
city until they moved in Polk City, Iowa when he was four years old. After two years of living in
Polk City, the family again moved to Cody, Wyoming. Then, There was a homestead program that
gave out a free land in 40 and 80 acres plots as part of a major irrigation project in Powell,
Wyoming. They had to move again, after two years, for this reason. At that time, the first four years
living at a tarpaper shack was a struggle for them to live life and move on with their daily tasks
because of the tough situation that they are facing. Deming started working odd jobs as young boy
in order for him to save up money for the everyday expenses of the family.
In 1917, W. Deming was a student who attended the University of Wyoming (UW), finishing
engineering major. Few years after, he finally earned his Bachelor's degree in 1921 by supporting
himself and doing all kinds of work, such as janitorial work, working in a dry cleaner, a soda jerk at
a local drug store, and several other jobs. After graduation, Deming stayed in UW to teach
engineering while studying mathematics at the same time. In 1922, he became an assistant professor

27. Fast Food Convenience vs. Quality
Burger King and Wendy's are among the top fast food chains in America, but this fact doesn't elude
either chain from having their negative and positive features. Burger King is cheaper, and has a
wider assortment of food than Wendy's, which makes Burger King more desirable to many
Americans. What Wendy's lacks in diversity, and lower priced food when compared to Burger King
becomes irrelevant due to the higher speed and superior quality food they offer. Both qualities of
Wendy's help to maintain equal competition between the two in the fast food market of America.
There is waiting time when you make a trip to Burger King for food; however it is relatively shorter
than that of most fast food establishments. If someone goes through the drive thru during a "lunch
rush" they'll most likely have to wait a maximum of ten minutes to be given their food. That wait
time is cut in half if they decide to walk in and place an order. On the other hand, any order placed
when there isn't a "rush" occurring is only going to have to wait about four minutes for their food.
Burger King is exceptionally consistent when it comes to efficiency at preparing customer's food.
The short waiting time is seems to be complimented when paired with the low pricing at Burger
King. There is not a single item on Burger King's menu that is priced over seven dollars.
Furthermore, a majority of Burger King's items are priced lower than five dollars. The value menu,

29. Food Waste A National Issue
Beatriz Lorenzo
Mrs. Nadine Gordon
ENG 112–85
3 December 2015
Food waste a national issue
At some point during the day in the United States, countless people are throwing out some food in
the garbage, either because it's not good to eat or because they serve a lot when eating. Otherwise
maybe because the food does not look fresh or simply the date that is seen on the packages indicate
that the food is no longer safe to eat. Everyday American consumers and food businesses are
throwing away tons of edible food into the trash without any concern about the irreversible
consequences being done to the environment. The consumers need to understand the differences
between food quality and food safety, because of this misunderstanding consumers are
unconsciously contributing to the statistics of food waste, and squandering the precious natural
resources used to produce food that no one eats. Every year the volume of food waste is growing
day–to–day and endangering the environment. Furthermore, the uncontrolled loss of products as a
result of inefficiencies in the supply chain for instance: the loss of products during the harvest,
storage, transport, or perhaps because the final product doesn't meet the standard requirements from
the buyer. Therefore, it's crucial to start creating new solutions to address the problem of food waste
in the United States, and to minimize the consequences of this huge problem.
First of all, food waste produces numerous negative effects in many sectors of

INTRODUCTION
I. About Nestle India Limited
'Nestle' is a Swiss company founded in 1866 by Henry Nestle in Vevey, Switzerland. It has been
doing business in India since 1912. Over the years from 1912 starting as 'Nestle Anglo – Swiss
Condensed Milk Company (Export) Limited' till today Nestle has emerged as a well–known name
offering solutions to customer wants in different segments such as beverages, prepared dishes and
cooking aids, chocolates and confectionaries etc. through its various brands. The brand still

II. About the Brand Maggi
Maggi' was launched in 1982 by Nestle India Limited as 'Maggi 2 Minute Instant Noodles' under the
'prepared category dishes'. Maggi Noodles is one of those brand names for whom the quote, 'I came,
I saw and I conquered' is apt. The brand replaced favourite Indian desi snacks such as Samos's and
kachoris with a hot bowl of Maggi noodles. Over the year, the success of the brand has been
commendable, especially considering the fact that it had the added task of creating the category as
well.
"Fast to cook ... Good to eat Maggi2–Minute Noodles"
Maggi used the tagline of 'fast to cook, good to eat' to woo the Indian audience in the early 1980s. It
understood the consumers' inertia and apathy to try new things. Indian consumers, at that time, were
evincing interest in Chinese noodles and Maggi launched its noodles to take advantage of this craze.

Airline Food Quality Improvements Culinary arts are the act of preparing, cooking and presenting
food in the form of a meal. This process is a science with infinite possibilities and no limits of

For example if a kitchen does not have a fryer it is not able to prepare fried foods. An airliner will
not maintain a fully stocked kitchen and therefore may be limited to microwaveable dishes. These
challenges must be accounted for when determining the culinary menu. Understanding potential
limiting factors can assure the best possible offerings are available for the target audience.
This analysis will evaluate how a suffering airline, respective to its quality of food offerings, can
improve outcomes using market research and customer feedback. This information can be used to
support changes in their airline menu. These changes can ensure a better consumer perception
toward the airlines food offerings. The use of secondary research, surveys, questionnaires and small
pilot groups can assist the airliner with making changes that meet the target audiences expectations.

Mahindra & Mahindra: Rise
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M) is an Indian multinational company which manufactures
automobiles of various kind. The company was founded in 1945 in Ludhiana as Mahindra &
Mohammed by brothers K.C. Mahindra, J.C Mahindra and Malik Ghulam Mohammed. Later the
company changed its name to Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948 and is headquartered in Mumbai,
India. It's segments of operation are automotive, farm equipment, automotive components,
information technology(IT) and infrastructure sectors. In 2003, M&M received Deming Application
prize from Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) in the FES (Mahindra & amp;
Mahindra Ltd., 2015). In 2007 M&M won Japan Quality Medal in the FES for implementing Total
Quality Management(TQM) in its entire business operations.
W. Edwards Deming was born in 20th century who eventually became the father of quality
evolution. He designed 14 principles of quality management. These principles were actualized by
Japan and built up its economy in only 10 years (SkyMark Corporation, 2016).
Deming Principle#1: Create Constancy of the Purpose
This concept explains how it is important to improve products and services continuously in order to
meet the requirements of the customer and their growing needs (see Appendix for more information

the same methodology which was used in the past 60 years however, management procedures over

3) These standard costs were allocated for manufacturing overhead for determining the companies'
revenue and profit margins based off the final product and sales. These allocated cost were then
measured by accounting, with primary focus on the utilization capacity of the manufacturing plant.
The conventional quantities, for example labor utilization, selling price variance, production
proficiencies, amongst other manufacturing identities procedures. These types of processes lead to a
factory that produces large amounts of scrap, poor quality products, increased shipping costs,
customer dissatisfaction, shortages, etc. These issues are common in factories however, can be
avoided if Lean processes can be applied. Ideally this would incorporate understanding the
necessary resources and unnecessary procedures.
A typical problem within most factories includes the overhead which tend to be redundant if not
paid close attention to. Another would be the absorption variance which indicates a significant
amount of products with little to no customer demand. There is a study which explained in 2008
General Motors and Chrysler Corporation were impacted severely by the "overhead absorption"
thought process. However, the manufacturing plant continued to build cars based of the "economic"
demand quantities, ultimately spending large amounts of cash. This resulted in supplying hundred of

Woolworths Case Analysis
Wandeli Loubser 15301648
BACKGROUND OF WOOLWORTHS
Woolworths began life in what had been the dining room of the old Royal Hotel in Cape Town on a
sunny October morning in 1931 as a clothing store and was founded by Max Sonnenberg.
In 1934 Woolworths opened a second branch in Durban, followed in 1935 by branches in Port
Elizabeth and Johannesburg. Shareholders who bought Woolworths stock in 1936 at 75c a share
would have seen that stock grow to many, many times its original price as the Woolworths brand has
become an entrenched icon in South African retail. Since 1936 the product range had expanded from
clothing and shoes to include food, cosmetics, gift items, accessories, mobile phones, an extensive

All of these clothing stores cater for more or less the same target market whereas Woolworths and
Edgars have more adolescent ranges. In terms of price they Woolworths would compete with stores

In the food industry Woolworths focus on having quality food everyday and all the time. They are
known for their fresh produce and pride themselves on their "cold chain" concept where food is
always stored between 5 and 0 degrees Celsius. They typically compete against supermarkets such
as Shoprite, Spar and Pick n Pay obviously has a wider variety of groceries.
Woolworths also has a coffee shop in certain store outlets where they use products from their food
market to prepare the meals. They would obviously compete against nearby restaurants in the
shopping centre and in the nearby area.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH THE DIFFERENT WOOLWORTHS STORES
I frequently visit the Woolworths branches located in Paarl, Tygervalley and Eikestad Mall. All of
them contains a food market, but only Paarl mall contains a coffee shop.
All though the layout of the stores are pretty much the same, female wear on the left, male on the
right shoes and accessories in the middle and the food store and coffee shop is located at the back,
they all differ in the unique way the store owner wants them to.

Shortcomings ought to likewise be considered from an interior and outside perspective. It is

Plenty of researches indicates that there are connections between the type, and quality of food

from a high class or of greater wealth or privilege. On the other hand, energy dense foods being poor
in nutrients are consumed by persons from lower classes and socioeconomic status and of restricted
economic power. Therefore, steak of a high and premium quality is more likely to be consumed by

Therefore, there is the creation or a social construct of group identity that engages in gastro–politics.
There is an argument that the tastes that consumers have for certain products, or the consumption of
specific products or services is socially conditioned, and these products are reflective of a symbolic
hierarchy that is maintained, or is determined by the dominant social class to enforce their
distinction from other social classes. Therefore, tastes could be a social weapon that defines a certain
social class, and it defines and differentiate the high from the low in matters that ranges from food,
drinks, newspapers and cosmetics. Consumer preferences, especially when it comes to the food
consumed is socially conditioned, and it can be seen from the upper social class' selection of food.
The debate about food and class comes down to education because the idea of being taught lies at
the center of the debate or socially conditioned. Food classification and the rules are passed down
from one generation to another as advice concerning what to eat or what makes a suitable meal, the
time to eat, food preparation method, process and safe food preparation strategies. Our descendants

descendants through enculturation. The practice has continued, and it is with this that the type of

48. Food For The Quality Of Food
3) From Quality to Quantity In this section, Pollan discusses how mankind has substituted the
quantity of food for the quality of it. The amount of nutrients in food has declined since the 1950s
because there has been major growth in the production of crops: the more a person grows the less
nutritious it is. One reason Pollan believes this is true is because of the chemicals in the fertilizers.
The chemicals make the crop grow faster so they have less time to accumulate the sufficient amount
of nutrients. The fertilizer gives the plant easier access to major nutrients so the roots do not go as
deep in the ground so they do not collet the natural nutrients and minerals from the soil. Crops now
have many more calories per acre but each one of the calories supplies less nutrition than it did
before. Because of this people eat more food but do not obtain the sufficient amount of nutrients.
More people are overfed and undernourished because they eat too much food, trying to get the
sufficient amount of a nutrients. Pollan strongly believe that our high–calorie, low nutrient intake is
responsible for many chronic diseases in the U.S. Despite agreeing with Pollan, I am still surprised
at the points that he makes in this section. Personally I never even thought about how the amount of
food we eat does not give us the amount of nutrients that we need. I first began to realize this while

The success or failure of a company is the obligation of the entire organization as a whole. (Deming,
2004) In his book, Out of the Crisis, he presents 14 key principles for management to follow to
improve the success of any business or any organization. His principles are below: (Deming, 1987)
1. Create constancy of purpose toward improvement of product and service. Always aiming to
remain competitive, stay in business and provide jobs. Strive towards being Excellent.
2. Adopt the new philosophy. "We are in a New Economic age". Change is good. In order for
business to grow and be successful you have to change with the times.
3. Cease dependence on inspection to achieve quality. If you produce a quality product initially the
need for inspection on a mass basis becomes unnecessary.
4. End the practice of awarding business on the basis of price tag. Build a long–term relationship of
loyalty and trust with your supplier by using a single supplier.
5. Always strive to decrease costs, by constantly improving the production and service system.
6. Establish training on the job.
7. Supervisors should help people, gadgets and machines to do a better job. Leadership is
mandatory.
8. So that everyone works effectively for the company, drive out fear. Employees should want to try
to do better. Failure is okay as long as something is learned and gained from the failure.

One of the main errors leading to this situation was the fact that ChassisCo didn't follow on the

This caused their efforts to mitigate in different projects, creating a capacity gap.
In order to speed up the process, Toyota could give a chance to the process manager to make

Also, rotating the engineering team that had the most developed relations with ChassisCo was a
significant mistake, since were key people to escalate problems and seek for solutions.
Making the switch from manual welding process to an automated one actually had a negative impact
on productivity. Perhaps the root cause of this was the fact that they needed more space to install the
additional capacity, but instead they decided to go for a higher plant density. Also, that they
preferred the lowest bids from parts suppliers, seeking to meet the aggressive Toyota price, but
instead might had jeopardized the quality of the supplied parts.

Nutritional effects in Artemia
Introduction:
Respiration is a vital process for any organism to do physiological activities, like reproduction and
metabolism, because it supplies required energy to the organism by convert glucose into energy.
Once the respiration rate is altered, it can affect the metabolic processes of the organism directly.
The nutritional quality of food can also affect the metabolism of the organism. Organism has
specific target intakes for the specific function. Furthermore, on a low energy diet, animals will
consume carbohydrates and fat first until the protein requirements are fulfilled. In this case, the low
energy intake can decrease the metabolic rate and reproductive rate of organisms (Gosby et al.
2011).
The Artemia franciscana is a genus of aquatic crustaceans known as brine shrimp, which plays an
important role in both ecological and physiology researching. It is used to be a model organism to
study and exploit because its good adaption in the hostile environment (Irwin et al., 2007).The

Allocation inefficiency ....Prices play three roles in a market. What is to be produced, how it is to be
produced and who gets the good. In a equilibrium market, price is the main determining factor. A
person who wants the goods most gets the good.
Relief food is food given either directly or indirectly to the people living in areas that face drought
or famine in a given country.
Drought can be defined in a simple conceptual way that it is a prolonged and abnormally dry and hot
period when there is scarcity of water for the normal needs of the affected community or ecosystem
Dependency is relying on someone or something else for aid or support. In this case people who are

64. The 11 Principles Of Quality
Quality. Such a simple word with a multitude of meanings. I must admit, prior to this course, I was
rather naïve about what quality entailed. I definitely did not have a concrete definition of what
quality was or stood for. It simply seemed as though quality was something that worked most of the
time. After the studies from this course I have a much better grasp of how to define quality and what
exactly quality means in various areas of life and business. For instance, the 11 Baldrige Principles
of Quality are an easily used metric for defining the quality of an organization. Previously, I never
would have used these 11 principles to define an organization as quality. Now, I find it hard not to

Thankfully, the Baldrige principles changed my perspective on quality. As such, I now use a few of
the principles to grade an organization. The main principles I find myself grading an organization
with are visionary leadership, customer–centered excellence, valuing workforce members and
partners and societal responsibility. All eleven of the principles are important. However, these tend
to be the most important to me when defining the quality of an organization.
For instance, I now purchase many products from the Newman's Own brand based on the principles
I have mentioned. They have a strong sense of societal responsibility and ensure "100% of profits to
charity" is an underlying theme in all they do (Newman 's Own, n.d.). This drew me towards them
as a company, then I noticed how much they value their employees and how their core values tend
to line up with the 11 Baldrige principles (Newman 's Own, n.d.). After looking into this company
and seeing how they operate, I decided to purchase as many products as I could from them and
ensure other people were aware of their mission. This is something that would never have been in
my realm of possibilities prior to this course. This is not to say I was unaware of being socially
responsible prior to this course. It is simply highlighting how my thought pattern has been modified
since learning about these specific 11 Baldrige Principles of Quality. After having such an epiphany

Total Quality Management and ISO 9000 are two very similar processes that overlap each other. A

Total Quality Management (TQM) is the theory of continuous improvement that involves all

TQM creates a greater financial yield by increasing output and productivity, making more profit
which will please the shareholders and potential investors (Gilani, 2015). TQM is highly renowned
for its strong improvement in customer satisfaction, by making changes and improvements to the
delivery process, consumers will receive their produce quicker. Businesses can reduce warranty 's
and support costs because of the improved quality of the product. There will be a fiscal discipline
through eliminating unnecessary steps, allowing the business to cut costs, and offer lower prices to
the consumer (Nayab, 2011). However there are also a lot of disadvantages some of the costs
associated with TQM are; higher quality is expensive therefore will be noticed in the pricing of
produce which may not be suitable for smaller businesses. Other costs are additional training,
infrastructural improvement costs and maintenance and regular refresher training. TQM is not a
quick fix solution it takes years of planning, dedication, time and resources. Highly competitive
markets and environments don 't have the time for TQM because of the constant need for full

Food quality plays an important role in food industry. Currently, consumers' demands on higher
quality of food products are increasing rapidly. Therefore, food industry is interested in analytical
methods which can provide low cost, fast, precise, and non–destructive analysis on product quality
(Gowen et al., 2007). The researches on non–destructive food quality analyzing technologies have
gain significant amount of interests (Chen et al., 2013; Lind and Murhed, 2012).
Machine vision, as a novel non–destructive analyzing technology, has been widely studied and
employed in various industries (Davies, 2012). It can be applied to inspect raw materials or products
during manufacturing (Davies, 2013). Recently the applications of machine vision in food industry
are increasing rapidly since the developments in camera technology and the processing power of
computer hardware (Chen et al., 2013). Machine vision technology has many advantages such as
improving quality, increasing throughput, reducing waste, and reducing labor (Lind and Murhed,
2012). Generally, machine vision system includes image acquisition section and image processing &
statistical pattern recognition section (Davies, 2013). The images processed by machine vision

RTT Task 2 The provided scenario gives an account of a busy emergency department with
competent staff, and the multiple errors that led up to the most severe error possible in healthcare,
unnecessary death of a patient. A root cause analysis (RCA) can be utilized to help understand the
systems at fault within the facility so that improvements can be determined and implemented to
prevent any future occurrences (Cherry, 456). RCAs focus on systems rather than blaming
individuals involved, therefore they are only appropriate in cases where there has been no willful
negligence or criminal acts (Huber & Ogrinc, 2014). The overall purpose of RCAs is to find out the
causes of the adverse event and determine how to keep similar errors from ... Show more content on

These statements link the cause to its effects and then back to the main event that promoted the root
cause analysis (Huber & Ogrinc, 2014). Guidelines for writing causal statements include the need
for clarity in the relationship, statements should use neutral language and not imply blame, cause
should be given for any human error, and any violation of procedure should also have a preceding
cause (Huber & Ogrinc, 2014). Recommendations for interventions for change must next be made
for the process improvement process to be successful. Recommendations should meet the following
criteria; they should be clearly linked to the identified root causes, recommendations should address
all of the root causes, be designed to reduce the likelihood of reoccurrence and severity, and be clear
and concise (Huber & Ogrinc, 2014). The acronym SMART is also helpful: Specific, Measurable,
Achievable, Realistic, and Time measured. Once recommended changes are agreed upon the team
can use the concept of change theory to decrease the likelihood of recent sentinel events similar to
the example given. The IHI gives this definition on change theory "A change concept is a general

* Ability to meet current and potential capacity requirements, and do so on the desired delivery
schedule. * Financial stability. * Technical support availability and willingness to participate as a
partner in developing and optimizing design and a long–term relationship. * Total cost of dealing
with the supplier (including material cost, communications methods, inventory requirements and
incoming verification required). * The supplier 's track record for business–performance
improvement. * Total cost assessment.
Now when the agreement on the business and vendor requirements had been compiled, the team

service. The larger the scope of the vendor selection process the more vendors you should put on the
table. Of course, not all vendors will meet the minimum requirements and the team will have to
decide which vendors you will seek more information from.

of the company 's goals and strategy and the objectives for the supplier performance management
program. There are a wide variety of areas of supplier performance that may be measured. It is
