conventionsof bothradiotrailersandprintadvertsandcreatinga PowerPointtogaina better
understandingof whatfeaturesshouldbe includedinourownproduction.
YouTube – we alsousedthisplatformtofindarchive material whichwouldmake the documentary
professional,effectiveandinteresting.We usedYouTube tosearchfor clipsthatwouldrelate tothe
colourred or add clarityto whatone of the interviewswastalkingaboutforexample,inour
voiceoverwe talkaboutredinfilmsandforthiswe searchedfor AmericanBeautythe rose petal
scene forthisas it ismainlya redscene.
MicrosoftWord – we usedthisto constructour questionnaire foraudiencefeedbackonwhat
people were lookingforinadocumentary,we usedthe toolsinMicrosoftwordto do this.
Construction:-
HD camera, Tripod and Microphone – In orderto filmourinterviewsandcutaways,we usedaHD
camera.This wassignificanttoourdocumentaryasit allowedustogatherthe footage thatwe
needed.The camerawassetup witha tripod,which couldbe extended,helpingthe footage to
remainstable andnotshaky.Using the camera wassimple,we onlyneededtoputitintovideo
mode and thenpressthe large buttonwiththe reddot to start recording.Inorderto gainthe
interviewee’sconfidence andhelpustoorganise ourframingcorrectlywe hadtrial questions(3
questions) thataskedtheirname andjob(warmingthemup).We watchedthese backmakingsure
that the mise-en-scene lookedappropriate inthe shotaswell asfollowingthe codesand
conventionsof interviewsusingthe rule of thirdsforframing.Alsothisallowedustocheckthe
soundlevelsof the interview,makingsure theycouldbe heardorthat it wasn’ttooloudagainstthe
mic.The tripodwasadjustable inheightasthe legsextendedorcouldbe shortenedaswell asbeing
able to tiltor rotate the camera while filming(whichwasusefulforcutaways).We foundthatwe
adjustedthe tripodsothat itwas eye level withthe interviewee andnotlookingupordownon
them.
Withthe camerawe also tookimagesof us inthe filmingprocess.Thiswaseasytouse because we
onlyneededtopressabuttonto turn it onand thenafterthat use anotherbuttonto take the
photographs.Toput the imagesontoout blogsasa recordof filmingwe hadtotake the SD card out
of the cameraand insertitintothe computerandtransferthe images.
2. To take our actual printadvertimage we useda DSLR camera to make sure that the imageswere
takenat a goodquality.Makingsure thatin post-productionwhen we needtoenlarge the image
that itwouldnotbecome pixelated.
To record the voiceoverwhichwouldbe usedinourdocumentaryandradiotrailer,we usedthe
recordingstudiothatwe have inschool.The microphone wasadjustable tothe heightof the
individualwe usedforthe voiceoversotheydidnothave to reachfor it whichcouldhave affected
the qualityof the voiceover.Once the recordinghadbeenmade itwasuploadedontoamemory
stickprovidedbymyself sothatI couldtransferitonto the group A Drive makingiteasiertoput
ontoour documentaryandradiotrailer.
Adobe Photoshop – We usedthissoftware tocreate our printadvert,forimage manipulationand
addingtext.Itwas veryuseful asitcontainedmanytoolswhichwe coulduse toeditthe printadvert
as a whole andthe image itself.The software allowedustomake the image standout by using
contrast andbrightnesstodefine the differentshadesof the colours. Thisprogramme alsoallowed
us to add textandpositionthe textandthe logo,andso we put theminthe bottomlefthandcorner
followingthe example of the ITV printadvertwe were using.We alsoaddedthe ITV logoas thisis
the channel thatour documentarywouldfeature on.We couldalsoeasilychange the size,fontand
colourof the textto be able to make the textvisible butnotdistractthe audience fromthe image
whichisthe main focusof a printadvert.
Adobe Premiere Pro – We usedthisprogramme tocreate our documentaryandradiotrailer.This
allowedustocut and piece differentpartsof clipstogetherthatwe hadfilmed,forexample the
interviewsandcutaways.We foundthisuseful whenhavingtoeditoutthe questionsinthe
interviewsasthisisone of the codesandconventionsof interviews,usingthe razortool, as well as
whenwe didn’twanta certainpart of the interview.The programme hadmultiple editingoptions
such as videoandaudioeffects/transitions;we usedsome of these wheneditingourdocumentary
for example whenwe needthe musictofade outafter the title sequencewe usedexponential fade
inthe audiotransitions.Moreover,we usedPremiereforthe creationof ourradio trailer.Itallowed
us to easilydragclipsfromthe documentarytothe radio trailertimeline,andcouldeasilyremove
the visualsbyunlinkingthe audioandvideoandthendeletingthe video.We were able tomake
exactcuts inour radio trailerbyzoomingintothe soundwaves,gettingridof anydeadspace where
there wasa longpause.The multiplelayerstothe sequenceallowedustoaddthe music bed
underneaththe speechandalsoenablingustomake it quietertoensure itdidnotoverpowerthe
speech/voiceover.
