1. We, firstly, added clips to the
timeline to ensure that the
right timeline was created for
video and audio. We decided
to drag the interviews first so
that we had the space to edit
and cut the interview
gatewaying the information.
We decided to then create
the title sequence of the
documentary as this is at
the start and reminds the
audience of what the
documentary is about,
essentially an important
part of the documentary.
We did this by using the
title tool in the Edit
window.
2. For each interview – starting
with Jacy’s interview – we cut
out the questions, following
the codes and conventions of
a documentary. We also
listened again to the interview
cutting out irrelevant parts of
the interview that did not
relate to the narrative we
wanted to create.
In this screenshot, we
moved back to the title
sequence and used archive
material of red in film that
would go over our voiceover.
From the left you can see
that the framing is too small
and so we had to enlarge it
to fit the frame on the right.
3. We added an effect to the title as when it comes up with the word ‘colour’
it would fade out. This would create a more interesting title sequence for
the audience to enjoy and keep engaged.
4. We added further archive to the
title sequence adding effects in
between so that they linked
together smoothly. This added to
the voiceover we were producing
showing the aspects of film.
5. Both clips on the left box and
the right box were added as
archive for more red in film
and these would be only 3
seconds long as part of the red
in film montage.
Using our own footage of a
red firework from bonfire
night, we added this to our
title sequence as the
beginning of the
documentary displays red in
everyday life.
6. For a better opener of the
documentary we decided that the
fireworks should be in slow motion
and to do this we right clicked on
the fireworks clip and then clicked
the option ‘speed/duration’ and
decreased the speed.
We found that Jacy’s
interview was quite a far
frame and didn't quite
look like the rule of thirds
that an interview must
follow, so we double
clicked the frame and
made the footage bigger
making it tighter and
focusing more on the
interviewee.
7. We also found that the frame
seemed a little dull due to the
lighting and because of this we
added brightness and contrast to
the interview making sure that it
reflected well on the screen.
Originally, the song choice that
we chose to open our
documentary was Elvis
Costello’s ‘Red Shoes’, this was
because this reflects the red
topic as it mentions red in the
song. This was to be played
over the title sequence making
it seem entertaining whilst
anchoring the subject.
8. In this screenshot, you can see that we have made the montage of
archive for red in film and added effects in between to make the
editing seamless and smooth. Each clip was around 3 seconds as it is
a brief insight to red in film and should not be too long to bore the
audience.
9. In this screenshot, we are
developing the opening of our
documentary which displays the
everyday uses of red, this anchors
the voiceover and is able to
introduce red before splitting into
the different specific topics.
In this screenshot there has
been a transition applied to
the different clips of
everyday uses of red, this
adds a seamless effect to the
documentary, following the
codes and conventions of a
documentary.
10. This shows one of our
cutaways that we added
to Jacy’s interview, it is
also in the background of
her interview and anchors
the colour red in costume.
As it is one of her own
pieces of work it adds
credibility to the
information that she says
as the reader can see she
is a professional.
We added a video transition
from the interview to the
cutaway to make sure that
they flowed smoothly.
11. We also added another transition for another cutaway from Jacy’s interview, it is of
a mannequin with red fabric on the top of it which anchors the topic and the
information that she is talking about. The transition again makes the documentary
seamless and follows the codes and conventions for editing.
12. In this screenshot we are editing the
vox pops that we collected. Here they
are giving a one word answer of what
they associate with the colour red.
Using the razor tool we edited out the
questions and also edited out any
silences, making the clip short and to
the point for the montage of vox pops
we were creating.
In this screenshot, you
can see that they have all
been put together on the
timeline and placed just
after the title sequence
as this introduces what
people think of red
before we go into detail
later on.
13. We decided that to introduce Jacy we would add a voiceover as well as a clip of her
having a conversation with us, this video would be muted so that we could hear the
voiceover. We later decided that this did not fit right when watching back and decided
to delete it and instead would cut the interviews to link with each other.
14. We then edited our second
interview of the photographer,
following the same steps as
before we edited the questions
out and any silences that were
unnecessary.
In this screenshot we
have split up each
question and answer so
that we can decide
whether to include or
delete the answer –
whether it is relevant to
what we are trying to
convey.
