Inferences
An inference is a
conclusion reached on
the basis of evidence
and reasoning.
Making inferences means that you use what
you know about a situation to understand the
text.
Your mother looks at your grades and makes a
disgusted face. You can infer that she does not
like your score.
Your roommate comes home from her date,
runs to her bedroom and slams the door. You
can infer that she and her date had a fight.
Karen bought six lottery tickets the previous
day and quit work the next day. You can infer
that she won a lot of money.
