2. Have them describe each and identify its part.
c. Do the same with the other group.
D.Discussion/Abstraction
To find the area, let us know first what is area.
Area is the number of square units needed to cover the surface of
the plane figure.
A polygon and its interior form a plane region. We can
find the area of the rectangular figure or rectangle by filling it in with
square units. The illustration below shows two units, square inch and a
square centimetre.
Square inch Square centimeter
1 cm
1 in
Example 1: What is the area of this figure below?
5 cm
4 cm
We have a rectangular array. Since the region is filled with 20 square
centimetres, its area is 20 centimetres (sq.cm), or 20 cm2
. The number of
square units is 5 x 4 = 20
l
Example 2: Find the area of a rectangle that has a dimension of 8
meters by 3 meters.
Solution:
8 m
A= 𝑙 . 𝑤
= 8 m . 3 m
A= 24 m2
(Continue discussing What Is It in the SLM Lesson 1)
E. Exercises
1: Find the area of a square with sides 12 cm.
3 m
We think of m . m as m2
and denote it as m2
. Thus,
we read “ 24 m2
” as “ 24 square meters.”
Solution;
A = s . s
2: Find the area of a square with sides 4 cm.

Area=Lxw
=6ft. x 2.5 ft
Area= 15 sq.ft.
C. Presentation
Find the area of the composite figure.
The composite figure contains 2 triangles and 1 square. We need to find the area of
each region.
Area of 1 triangle:
A = ½ bh
A = ½ (7)(4)
A = ½ (28)
A = 14 yds2
Area of square:
A = lw = 7(7) = 49 yd2
Total area of figure: Add up areas of 2 triangles and square:
A = 2(14) + 49
= 28 + 49 = 77 yd2
.
D. Discussion/Abstraction
A composite figure is formed from two or more figures.
To find the area of a composite figure:
Find the areas of each figure then add them up.
To find the area of a shaded region, you need to subtract the areas.
Example 1: Find the area of each shaded region. Assume that all angles that appear to
be right angles are right angles.
A.
We can separate the figures into two: a triangle and a square. Now, let us find the
area of each figure.
Solution:
Area of the triangle Area of the square
A=

2
𝑥 42 𝑐𝑚2
A= 49 cm2
A = 21 cm2
We can see that the area of
21cm + =

Therefore, the area of the composite figure is 70 cm2
.
● Find the area of the shaded region if the area of the square is 64 ft2
.
We are given the area of the square, we need to find the area of the circle.
What is its radius?
Ans:
We are given the area of the square, we need to find the area of the circle.
What is its radius?
Diameter = Length of square = = 8 ft.
Radius = ½ (8) = 4 ft.
Area of circle:
A = r2
A = (4)2
= 16 ft2
.
Area of shaded region =
Area of square – Area of circle
A = 64 - 16 ft2
.

B. Motivation
Most of the outdoor basketball court was already repainted green. The only part
left to redo was the brown key. The painters need to know the total area of the
space remaining in order to buy enough paint.
C. Presentation
Given the dimensions shown below, what area should the workers use to
calculate their supplies?
First, find the area of the rectangle.
The area of the rectangle is 192 square feet.
Next, recognize that you have been given a diameter and need to divide that by
2 to get the radius. The problem states that the diameter of the circle is the same
as the width of the rectangle, 3 feet.
The area for a full circle is approximately 113 square feet.
Then, remember that you have a semi-circle and divide this area by 2.
The area of the semi-circle is 56.5 square feet.
Add the two areas together.
The workers will need to by enough paint to cover 248.5 sq. ft.
D. Discussion/Abstraction

  • 2. Area of a Rectangle The area of a rectangle is the product of the length (l) and the width (w). A= or ( l x w) w l 2. Have them describe each and identify its part. c. Do the same with the other group. D.Discussion/Abstraction To find the area, let us know first what is area. Area is the number of square units needed to cover the surface of the plane figure. A polygon and its interior form a plane region. We can find the area of the rectangular figure or rectangle by filling it in with square units. The illustration below shows two units, square inch and a square centimetre. Square inch Square centimeter 1 cm 1 in Example 1: What is the area of this figure below? 5 cm 4 cm We have a rectangular array. Since the region is filled with 20 square centimetres, its area is 20 centimetres (sq.cm), or 20 cm2 . The number of square units is 5 x 4 = 20 l Example 2: Find the area of a rectangle that has a dimension of 8 meters by 3 meters. Solution: 8 m A= 𝑙 . 𝑤 = 8 m . 3 m A= 24 m2 (Continue discussing What Is It in the SLM Lesson 1) E. Exercises 1: Find the area of a square with sides 12 cm. 3 m We think of m . m as m2 and denote it as m2 . Thus, we read “ 24 m2 ” as “ 24 square meters.”

  • 6. Area=Lxw =6ft. x 2.5 ft Area= 15 sq.ft. C. Presentation Find the area of the composite figure. The composite figure contains 2 triangles and 1 square. We need to find the area of each region. Area of 1 triangle: A = ½ bh A = ½ (7)(4) A = ½ (28) A = 14 yds2 Area of square: A = lw = 7(7) = 49 yd2 Total area of figure: Add up areas of 2 triangles and square: A = 2(14) + 49 = 28 + 49 = 77 yd2 . D. Discussion/Abstraction A composite figure is formed from two or more figures. To find the area of a composite figure: Find the areas of each figure then add them up. To find the area of a shaded region, you need to subtract the areas. Example 1: Find the area of each shaded region. Assume that all angles that appear to be right angles are right angles. A. We can separate the figures into two: a triangle and a square. Now, let us find the area of each figure. Solution: Area of the triangle Area of the square A= 1 2 𝑥 𝑏 𝑥 ℎ 6cm A= S . S = 1 2 𝑥 7 𝑐𝑚 𝑥 6 𝑐𝑚 = 7 cm x 7 cm = 1 2 𝑥 42 𝑐𝑚2 A= 49 cm2 A = 21 cm2 We can see that the area of 21cm + = 6 cm 7 cm 7 cm 21c m 49 cm2 70 cm2 21
  • 7. + Therefore, the area of the composite figure is 70 cm2 . ● Find the area of the shaded region if the area of the square is 64 ft2 . We are given the area of the square, we need to find the area of the circle. What is its radius? Ans: We are given the area of the square, we need to find the area of the circle. What is its radius? Diameter = Length of square = = 8 ft. Radius = ½ (8) = 4 ft. Area of circle: A = r2 A = (4)2 = 16 ft2 . Area of shaded region = Area of square – Area of circle A = 64 - 16 ft2 .
