Solving Routine
and
Non- Routine Problems
involving Temperature
in Real - Life Situations
OBJECTIVES:
• Solves routine and non- routine
problems involving temperature in
real-life situations
• Writes solutions on routine and
non- routine problems involving
temperature in real-life situations
• Shows accuracy in getting the
temperature of one’s body
A. Reviewing Previous
Lesson or Presenting the
New Lesson
• at the freezing point of
water
Give the temperature when the liquid or digital
thermometer is:
• 10◦C below the normal
body temperature
• 25◦C above the boiling
point of water
Give the temperature when the liquid or digital
thermometer is:
• between 30◦C to 40◦C
• at the boiling point of
water
Give the temperature when the liquid or digital
thermometer is:
B. Establishing a Purpose
for the Lesson
I need four(4) volunteers from the
class.
Among yourselves, choose two
pupils whose body temperature will
be measured while the remaining two
pupils will be the one to measure their
body temperature using the digital
thermometer.
Record the results on the manila
paper that I will be providing to you.
Who has the higher temperature?
lower temperature?
How much higher is the temperature of
one pupil than the other?
How should we read the thermometer ?
Why is it important to read the
temperature of one’s body with accuracy?
What will happen if we misread the
temperature of one’s body?
C. Presenting Examples/
Instances of the Lesson
Problem A
The weather report in one newspaper predicted the lowest
temperature for the day to be 24◦C and the highest at 32◦C.
What was the difference in the predicted temperatures for that
day?
Based on the weather report in one newspaper, what was
the predicted lowest temperature of that day? How about the
highest?
What do you think is the weather condition for the said
day?
What are the suitable activities to be done for such kind of
weather?
How about the kind of clothes we need to wear?
If you were the forecaster, what advise may you give to
the people to be safe and enjoy such kind of weather?
Read the problems.
Problem B
Marina has a fever. At 12 noon, her temperature
increased by 1.8◦C from her temperature at 7 A.M.
Then her temperature went down by 1.3◦C at 5 P.M. At
11 P.M., her temperature rose again by 1.1 ◦C. If her
temperature at 11 P.M. was 39.7◦C, what was her
temperature at 7 A.M.?
Who has a fever?
What was the increase of her
body temperature at 12 noon from
7 am?
How about the decrease from
12 noon to 5 pm?
What happened to her body
temperature from 5 pm to 11 pm?
How are you going to
solve each problem?
D. Discussing New and
Practicing New Skills # 1
1. I will divide the class into four (4)
groups.
2. Groups 1 & 3 will solve the answer
for Problem A while Groups 3 & 4
will do Problem B .
3. Share your answers to the class
later.
4. Always observe the things we need
to do in doing a group activity.
Group Activity
Presentation
of
Group Output
Problem A: Using Illustration
highest temperature for the day
lowest temperature for the day
Problem B : Using the 4- Step Plan
a. Understand :
Know what is asked :
Marina’s temperature at 7 A.M.
Know the given facts :
At 12 noon, her temperature increased by 1.8◦C from her
temperature at 7. A.M .Then it went down by 1.3◦C at 5 P.M. The
temperature at 11 P.M. was 39.7◦C.
b. Plan:
Determine the operation to be used:
Addition and subtraction
Write the number sentence:
39.7◦C - (1.8◦C-1.3◦C+1.1◦C) = N
c. Solve: Show your solution
39.7◦C - (1.8◦C-1.3◦C+1.1◦C)
39.7ºC – (0.5ºC + 1.1ºC)
39.7ºC – 1.6ºC
38.1◦C - Marina’s temperature at 7 A.M.
d. Check and Look back:
38.1◦C + 1.8◦C = 39.9◦C
39.9◦C - 1.3◦C = 38.6◦C
38.6◦C + 1.1◦C= 39.7◦C
How did you find the
activity?
How were you able to find
the answer to the problem?
In how many ways were
you able to arrive at the
answer?
Are there ways by which you can solve the given
problems?
The first problem is an example of a routine problem.
Routine problem solving concerns solving problems that are
useful for daily living ( in the present or future).
The second problem is an example of a non routine
problem. Non-routine problem solving is mostly concerned
with developing pupil’s mathematical reasoning power and
fostering the understanding that mathematics is a creative
endeavor. This kind of problem helps the teacher to motivate
and challenge their pupils.
Some strategies used in these kind of problems are:
a. Guess and Check b. Drawing /Diagram/Illustration
c. Using patterns d. Use the 4-Step Plan
E. Discussing New and
Practicing New Skills # 2
Read and solve.
From 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
the temperature went up steadily at
40◦C. at a rate of 0.75◦C each
hour. What was the temperature at
6:00 a.m.?
How will you solve the
problem?
Solution: Using the 4- Step Plan
a. Understand :
Know what is asked :
The temperature at 6:00 a.m.
Know the given facts :
40◦C, 0.75◦C each hour
b. Plan:
Determine the operation to be used:
Multiplication and Subtraction
Write the number sentence:
40◦C – ( 5x 0.75◦C)
c. Solve: Show your solution
40◦C – ( 5x 0.75◦C)
40˚C – 3.75˚C
36.25˚C – the temperature at 6:00am
d. Check and Look back:
40◦C-3.75◦C= 36.5◦C
F. Developing
Mastery
Read and analyze the problem. Then, fill in the blanks from
the choices below.
Enzo’s temperature lowered by 1.75◦c after he was given a
sponge bath. Before the bath, his body temperature was
40.25◦C.What is his body temperature now?
a. Understand
Know what is asked ____________
Know the given facts ___________
b. Plan
Operation to be used ___________
Number Sentence _____________
c. Solve
Show the solution______________
d. Check
Verify if the answer is correct _______________
subtraction Enzo’s present body temperature
1.75˚C; 40.25˚C 40.25˚C - 1.75˚C = N
38.5˚C + 1.75˚C = 40.25˚C 40.25˚C - 1.75˚C = 38.5˚C
G. Finding Practical
Applications of
Concepts and Skills in Daily
Living
Game: “Reach Upon a Star”
Mechanics:
1. I will divide the class into 2 groups.
2. Each group will choose a volunteer to
represent their group.
3. Each representative will answer the
questions about the given problem in the
given period of time.
4. Each correct answer would mean 1 step
higher in the ladder.
5. The first to reach the star will be the winner.
Lino’s temperature this morning was
38.2◦C. After 2 hours, his temperature was
39.5◦C. How many degrees did his
temperature rises?
Questions:
1. What is asked in the problem?
2. What are the given facts?
3. What is the operation to be used?
4. What is the number sentence?
5. What is the answer?
6. Check your answer.
Reach Upon a Star
38.2˚C; 39.5˚C
1.3˚C
39.5˚C – 38.2˚C = N
Subtraction
1.3˚C+38.2˚=
39.5˚C
The increase of Lino’s body temperature
H. Making Generalization and
Abstraction

Check and Look back: 38.1◦C + 1.8◦C = 39.9◦C 39.9◦C - 1.3◦C = 38.6◦C 38.6◦C + 1.1◦C= 39.7◦C
