Question Three:
 Distribution is the final process in ensuring the film will become successful, without
a good distributor many films end up not reaching there full potential. Therefore in
order to ensure success, distribution ( when done correctly) is essential in ensuring
that the film is accessible by the audience members. The distributors tend to have
no input into the creation of the film, but instead are used to help get the name of
the film in the media and to bring in potential audience!
 The films production team tends to have very little input into the funding of film
but tend to have more of the creation involving the development of the film.
 Production companies normally do not work parallel with distributors but
sometimes work alongside them.
 My opening sequence would appeal more to an independent company due to
the use of no star actors, a low budget, the availability of software and
equipment which was available during the filming process. This therefore
makes it more accessible to independent companies.
 Big conglomerates such as Walt Disney or Universal Studios tend work using
horizontal integration, and work with much bigger budgets and access to
better equipment and software.
Lionsgate is known for distributing well known thrillers such as….
 The main reason I would have liked to select this distribution company is
because Lionsgate is the largest and most successful independent distribution
companies in North America, which overall places it at the seventh most
profitable movie studio.
 Lionsgate distributed the Saw Franchise, Hostel, The cabin in the woods, etc.,
all of which are well known and part of the thriller horror genre.
 Lionsgate already is a well-known for all there successful thriller films they’ve
already created; and therefore have a following already formed and then can
directly appeal to the audience who have already enjoyed they’re previous
films.
 Lionsgate has 2,285,439 likes on Facebook. This will automatically come up on
anyone who uses Facebook and likes this page’s feed. Trailers and posters could
be released on this Facebook page and could be seen by thousands of people.
 Lionsgate also has 58.6K followers on twitter, which is another platform they
could advertise the film on. All followers must have some interest in the films
which Lionsgate distributes and therefore this will directly address them and
grab there attention.
 Another outlet Lionsgate could use is a blog. Blogs are coming increasingly
popular and could be used to release exclusive content to those who are
interested. This way they are addressing all types of audiences and building on
their social media platforms.
Warp has distributed films that belong to the thriller genre, such as…
 I decided to chose this distributor as warp films are known for
producing low budget films which go on to become successful, a good
example of this Is ‘This is England’ which went on to gross £5 million
in the box office, despite the film having a low budget and no star
actors.
Warp pictures also works in cooperation with ‘Channel 4’ to broadcast
their films Tv shows after they have been released after a period of
time, channel 4 is a quite popular as well as its sub channels such as E4,
FILM4, ECT.
During the month of march 2017 10% of the English
population tuned into channel 4…
 Warp Films have 50,260 likes on Facebook, This will automatically come up on
anyone who uses Facebook and likes this page’s feed. Trailers and posters could
be released on this Facebook page and could be seen by thousands of people.
 Warp Films have 31.3K followers on twitter, which is another platform they
could advertise the film on. All followers must have some interest in the films
which Lionsgate distributes and therefore this will directly address them and
grab there attention.
 Another outlet which Warp Films could used to advertise the film is on popular
apps such as Instagram and snapchat, this would help apply to our target
audience as the age groups between 15-25 are the typical users of this app.
 Mainstream movies first come out in the cinema, and are heavily advertised by the distributers
to ensure all potential audience are aware. 6 months to a year later the movie the can be
released on Netflix, blinkbox and other streaming websites.
 As our target audience is 15-25 year olds ways which our thriller could be advertised is through
the use of Facebook, twitter and Instagram.
 By our thriller being advertised and distributed like this, the film will then reach its full potential
and reach all possible audiences and people who may be interested.
 Another way our thriller could be distributed is by using the following…
Netflix have there own exclusive Tv shows and films,
a good example of one which is extremely popular is
‘Orange is the new black’.
Many low budget, independent films
go straight on sale using websites like
iTunes and google play for the
audience to purchase and watch.
