The Puritans fled religious persecution in England and established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1620s. Unlike Jamestown, the colony was located in an area with clean water, a cooler climate, and no mosquitoes, allowing the Puritans to survive where others had failed. The Puritans agreed to live in an orderly society governed by a covenant to succeed in the New World. They were devoted to their religion but also enjoyed moderate pleasures. Puritan society valued education, hard work, and self-governance through their covenant with God.
