 Were an offshoot of the Puritans
 They were officially Separatists (wanted
to completely break away from the
Church of England/Anglican Church)
 Puritans wanted to clean up the COE
 All 41 males signed the
Mayflower Compact
 Agreed to pass laws
that were in the best
interest of the colonists
 This was one of the 1st
attempts at self-
government in the
English colonies
 NOT a constitution
 Originally traveled to
Leiden, Holland in 1607
 Because of cultural
concerns, the Pilgrims
abandoned their
experiment
 Back in Britain, they
approached the VA
Company and asked if
they could settle in
America
 Sept 16, 1620, the
Mayflower left England
loaded with 100+ men,
women, and children
(only about 30 were
officially Separatists)
 William Bradford-Governor for many
years
 Miles Standish-Responsible for defense
 Squanto, Samoset and Massasoit stories
 In a way similar to the Pilgrims, the
Puritans moved to the New World for
religious reasons as well
 Unlike Pilgrims they DID NOT want a
formal separation from the COE
 They wanted to purify/change the
church, ridding it of all Catholic rituals
 James I had been relatively tolerant of
Puritans
 In 1625, James I died and was replaced by
Charles I
 Chucky was not terribly tolerant of Puritan
proposals
 John Winthrop and another wealthy
Puritan, Sir Richard Saltonstall, decided
to form a company and start an
American colony because they were
convinced that England had fallen on
“evil and declining times.”
 The charter did not say that they had to
meet in England, so they took it with
them to the New World
 City Upon a Hill was a sermon given on
John Winthrop’s flagship, the Arbella
 Puritans believed they had a covenant
or an agreement with God to build a
holy society
 Winthrop was a strong leader and set
examples for newly arriving colonists with
their work ethic
 Between 1629 and 1640 about 20,000
people made the trip in the Great
Migration, deciding they wanted to be a
part of the Puritan experience in
Massachusetts Bay.
 MBC Satellite congregation minister
 McDs started in 1940 as BBQ restaurant
under McDonald brothers in San
Bernardino, CA. In 1950s it was remade
as a hamburger stand with assembly
line principles.
 The majority of Hooker’s congregants
were unable to participate in govt.
 Hooker and the members of his church
grew tired of fighting for the right to
participate and decided to move to the
fertile Connecticut River Valley and what
would become Hartford, CT
 Picture a long convoy of sheep, ducks,
chickens, goats, etc.
 Hartford along with the neighboring towns of
Windsor and Wethersfield adopted a plan of
government called the Fundamental Orders of
Connecticut (FOC)
 King chartered it as a separate colony in 1662
 Very similar to the rules found in Massachusetts
Bay with two major differences:
a. Limited the powers of the governor
b. All men who owned property were allowed to vote,
SUFFRAGE FOR THOSE WHO WERE NOT CHURCH
MEMBERS
 New England town meetings
 Harvard established in 1636 to
educate Puritan ministers
 Education laws were created so
that children could read the Bible
(Old Deluder Satan Act)
 Williams arrived in MBC in 1631
 Before long he had his own
church in Salem
 RW got the attention of the
colony’s leaders because he
taught that colonists should not
take Indian land without paying
for it
 He also said that church and
government should be
completely separate
 Williams also opposed
mandatory church attendance
 Williams was viewed as a threat to the
Puritan way of life
 General Court decided to banish him to
England
 Williams took off into the woods to the south
and lived with a friendly Indian tribe for
several months before he founded
Providence Plantations, RI
 New settlement based on his ideas and
allowing all white men to vote
 RI guaranteed religious freedom and
separation between church and state
 Anne believed anyone
could worship God
without the help of a
church or minister
 She held weekly Bible
discussions in her home
which were a problem
 Puritans believed only
ministers could
comprehend the word of
God
 She was put on trial
while pregnant with
her 16th child at the
age of 46
 General Court found
her guilty of
“traducing the
ministers” AKA heresy
and blasphemy
 She was booted out
of the colony
 In 1638 Anne fled
MBC and was
welcomed in what
colony?
 Rogue’s Island (RI)
 She was called a
heretic/dissenter
(people who
disagree with
official
government
opinions)
 What is the root of all that is evil?
 More than 200 people were accused of
witchcraft
 19 people were hanged
 1 person was pressed to death
 2 dogs were also killed
 The Dead
 Nineteen accused witches were hanged on Gallows
Hill in 1692:
 June 10
Bridget Bishop
July 19
Rebecca Nurse
Sarah Good
Susannah Martin
Elizabeth Howe
Sarah Wildes
August 19
George Burroughs
Martha Carrier
John Willard
George Jacobs, Sr.
John Proctor
September 22
Martha Corey
Mary Eastey
Ann Pudeator
Alice Parker
Mary Parker
Wilmott Redd
Margaret Scott
Samuel Wardwell
 One accused wizard was pressed to death on Sept.
19 when he failed to plead guilty or not guilty: Giles
Corey
 TWO DOGS:Rover and Spot
 Other accused witches died in prison:
 Sarah Osborn
Roger Toothaker
Lyndia Dustin
Ann Foster
(As many as thirteen** others may have died in
prison.)
 Royal colony
 Used to be part of
MBC
 Settled by
fishermen
 Captain John
Mason and Sir
Ferdinando Gorges
