Retro reflectivity of all types of Road Markings.

demonstration of the above said equipment at KM 0.000 TO KM 05.050 KM in the state of Bihar and
appreciating the utility of the Retro reflectometer for Road Markings.
2. Introduction
Measuring principle and standards. Retroreflection:
Delta’s LTL-2000S Retro Reflectometer is a device that measures the retro-reflection of the Road
Markings for both its Day time & Night time visibility. RL is a measure of retro reflected light for Night
visibility, the QD is a measure of diffuse illumination during daytime.
These Road markings are basically Thermoplastic Paint material that is sprayed with Glass Beads on
the paint surface to provide retro-reflection. The light focused from the Vehicle head lamps falls on
these Glass Beads which reflect the light back to its source that will make them glow to provide
visibility to the vehicledrivers.
LTL-2000S comply with the following standards:
EN 1436, ASTM E 1710, ASTM E 2177, ASTM E 2302, ASTM E 2832

On site quality control of road markings & road surfaces in accordance with CEN/ASTM
specifications
The LTL-2000S retro reflectometer is a portable field instrument intended for measuring the
retroreflection and reflection properties of road markings. LTL-2000S measures the RL value
(coefficient of retroreflected luminance at night) and the Qd value (day light visibility). RL is a measure
of the retroreflected light from the road marking as seen by drivers of motorized vehicles in car
headlight illumination. The road is illuminated at an angle of 1.24The illumination for Qd is diffused.
The reflected light for both RL and Qd is measured at an angle of 2.29, which corresponds to an
observation distance of 30 meters. This is relevant for a motorist’s viewing situation under normal

3. RL and Qd are important measurement factors for ON-SITE quality control of road markings.
LTL-2000S retro reflectometer features Portable Instrument Ergonomic Operation Height Fast
measurement (completed in about 1sec.for RL or Qd and 3sec.for RL+Qd) Build in thermal printer
Measuring on dry and wet surfaces Will measure flat, textured & profiled markings up to 5mm Fully
documented measurements with automatic data storage, user and series identification for labeling and
grouping measurements RSC (Road Sensor Control) PC software for data exchange. Log data can be
exported to applications such as Microsoft Excel or displayed on Google Earth Easy one-step calibration
procedure. The instrument operates with a reproducibility of +/-5% and a repeatability of +/- 2%.The
measurement results along with date and time stamp and the GPS data saves in .csv file in the
equipment memory which can be seen after downloading on to the PC.
Calibration Unit
The road marking is simulated by a piece of white ceramic calibration test piece (the reference)
mounted on an aluminum profile supplied along with the main device. Ceramics have very stable optical
properties because of the smooth surface.
4. Calibration:LTL-2000S instrument is originally calibrated at DELTA’s DANAK- accredited laboratory
and are traceable in accordance with standards issued by PTB (Physikalish-Technische Bundesanstalt,
Germany) and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA). The recommended daily
calibration of the instruments is simple and easy to carry out
Delta’s Retro reflectometer LTL-2000S was IRC accredited.

IRC Standards
In IRC-35-2015 standards mentioned the Retro-reflectivity results with types of design speed.
As per MORTH (Fifth Revision) the thermoplastic paint shall be applied in intermittent or continuous
lines of uniform thickness at least 2.5mm unless specified otherwise.
Design Speed Considered:65-100Kmph
The Green and Red color is indicating the blow and above the permissible value respectively as per
IRC:35-2015.
