En esta investigación se elaboraron mapas de coberturas de manglar del borde costero del Caribe colombiano, desde Punta Canoas en el departamento de Bolívar, hasta Boca de Tinajones, en el litoral del departamento de Córdoba. La fuente de información espacial fueron Imágenes Rapid Eye del área de trabajo (años 2010 y 2011) con nivel de procesamiento tipo 3A con 5 metros de resolución espacial, datum WGS-84, proyección UTM zona 18. La identificación y mapeo de las coberturas de manglar, se llevó a cabo a través de la técnica de clasificación visual, utilizando la composición de bandas (3, 2, 1) o color verdadero dentro de ambiente ArcGIS . La validación de las coberturas identificadas se efectuó con trabajo de campo utilizando tecnología de Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) con software ArcPAD para obtención de registros de la posición de áreas con cobertura de manglar, evaluación del resultado de la clasificación e información básica para la caracterización de los manglares.
