Acquisition They can get there information from interviews, public library and other
resources. KERRANG! Magazine may use archives to gather there information on the
type of audience the new issue will be aimed at. Also journalist have to follow the PCC
editors code in which they have to follow 16 rules and one being honesty.
Copy editing A decision is taken to publish a work, and the technical legal issues
resolved, the author may be asked to improve the quality of the work through rewriting
or smaller changes, and the staff will edit the work. Publishers may maintain a house
style, and staff will copy edit to ensure that the work matches the style and grammatical
requirements of each market. They often would edit and copy the magazine if it
contains moral or ethical issues.
Graphic design They would check they layout of the magazine and see if it suits the
target audience.
Production which develops and designs the cover and interior of each book, along with
coordinating the printing and binding of the finished products. Readers do in fact judge
a book by its cover, and getting it right is something the largest publishers do extremely
well.
Printing After the end of editing and design work the printing phase begins. The first
step involves the production of a pre-press proof, which the printers send for final
checking and sign-off by the publisher. This proof shows the book precisely as it will
appear once printed and represents the final opportunity for the publisher to find and
correct any errors. KERRANG! also go through this process being a traditional
publishing magazine.
Marketing
They will advertise on public transport for instance buses, trains and cabs. They will also
advertise on radios and TV adverts raising the magazine awareness by milli0ns within seconds.
Also billboard allowing road users to see the adverts.
Distribution
They sell their magazines to the wholesales, retails shops e.g. HMV, ASDA & WH Smiths and
then to the consumers. However in this day and age magazine companies like KERRANG can
reach the consumers through varies of way for instance online subscription and weekly or
monthly mail or email.
What do we mean by publishing?... Publishing is the process of production
of literature, music, or information. The activity of making information available to the
general public. In some cases, authors may be their own publishers, meaning: originators and
developers of content also provide media to deliver and display the content for the same. Also,
the word publisher can refer to the individual who leads a publishing company or imprint or to
a person who owns a magazine.
What types of products have been traditionally published?... Traditionally, the term refers to
the distribution of printed works such as books, newspapers, magazines & news letters.
In the digital age what new products might be published?... such as the electronic versions of
books often digitally read on kindles. As well as micropublishing, websites, blogs, video game
publishers.
