2. What do publishing and
distributing companies do?
Magazine distributors are companies that print and
publish a magazine and then are also responsible for
sales. To increase sales they pinpoint the shops and
areas where the particular magazine is going to sell
better, when a distributor is big it gives the magazine
more opportunities to sell more.
3. Types of distribution
Magazines can be distributed through post, through sales by newsagents,
bookshops or other vendors such as online.
Paid circulation
This is where the magazine is sold to readers for a price either per issue, or by
a subscription on a monthly or yearly basis and the issues are sent by post.
Non paid circulation
There is no price for the issues and they are given away for example in street
dispensers, in flight magazines or included in other products or publications
like newspapers.
Controlled circulation
The magazine is only distributed to qualifying readers. This is often done for
free and is determined by a survey.
Rogue would be paid distribution.
4. What my magazine is similar
to?There arenโt any music magazines in the Indie genre that I can compare my magazine to. There
is however, Indie the fashion magazine. Indie is published by Plastic Media. They are a
fashion/music/lifestyle publishing house and event agency founded in 2003 by Kira
Stachowitsch and Clemens Steinmueller. They publish INDIE, INDIE English Edition and material
girl which are distributed worldwide and available at the most important newsagents and
national and international chain stores. Also, Plastic Media creates and produces magazines, look
books and catalogues for various clients, from international brands/companies (like MONKI
Magazine for Fabric Scandinavien) to independent designers (like Austrian Fashion Guide for
Austrianfashion.net). Indie magazine has a wide distribution area:
โ German-language edition: Germany, Austria, Switzerland.
โ International (English-language) edition: UK, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Sweden,
Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland, Malta, Turkey, USA, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Hong
Kong, Japan.
5. What my magazine is similar
to?
The closest music magazine would be Q magazine. Q is published by Bauer Media
Group which is a multinational media company set up in 1875 with headquarters in
Hamburg, Germany. They operate in 16 countries worldwide. Q is only published in
the UK but is available in most newsagents and chain stores. Worldwide circulation of
Bauer Media Group's magazine titles amounts to 38 million magazines a week. As well
as publishing Q Bauer media group also publish Kerrang! a specialist rock music
magazine.
6. My chosen companyI would like a strict but fair media institution to distribute my media product. I would
not want my magazine to be controlled and challenged by those who believe they have
more power, but to be written by people that have a passion for the music. I would like
my media institution to provide a truthful magazine featuring top quality artists. I
would need to make sure that the media institution had many, many years of
experience, so they know exactly what they are doing. It is not important what other
styles they publish as long as they stay true to the Rogue brand and donโt try to
convert it to be like any of their other magazines.
To publish Rogue I would choose Bauer Media Group as I feel they would do a good
job of publishing Rogue as they are big so have the advantage of being a conglomerate
and they publish other music magazines so they know what they are talking about.
They have offices in: Germany,USA, Spain, France, Austria, Poland, Portugal,
Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Mexico, China, Russia, Slovakia, United
Kingdom, Nigeria and Australia. So if I wanted Rogue to go international Bauer would
be a good company to go with.
