Professor Michael Apple will deliver a public lecture at the University of Strathclyde on June 16th titled "Are current educational reforms really democratic?". In the lecture, Professor Apple will discuss how educational reforms promoted as enhancing democracy in many nations have instead increased inequality and shifted understandings of democracy away from fully participatory forms. Registration for the lecture is required by June 3rd.

The Creative Citizens work programme formally ends in February 2015, but we still have a busy programme of publishing, talking and seeking ways to carry the work forward.
In January, Principal Investigator Ian Hargreaves made a presentation to the Connected Communities Strategic Advisory Board, which generated a lively discussion about a number of issues: the nature of collaborative creativity; the role of leadership in co-creative projects; divergent futures on technology and much more. Skills Development Through Authentic Assessment
"Authentic assessment" is relevant to real world outcomes and engaging for students. Much of the treadmill activity of conventional assessment (essays and exams) has little to do with what goes on in the workplace. Faced with the task of developing a "research skills" module for 300 biological sciences students, I attempted to apply the principles of authentic assessment. The practical problems in achieving this with a large number of students involve the staffing demands of this approach, and there are problems with applying performance-based outcomes to large groups of students. Team-based learning enhances student engagement and represents a shift from a teacher-based strategy to a student-centred approach.

The National Parent Forum of Scotland held a conference on October 4th at Bishopbriggs Academy with 110 delegates and 30 children attending. The theme was preparing children with skills for their future. These reforms have had significant effects on what counts as a good school, a good student, a good teacher, and good teacher education. Yet, in all too many cases they also have produced more not less inequality. In the process, they have shifted our understanding of the very nature of democracy from 'thick' fully participatory forms to 'thin' versions that do not necessarily result in more robust policies for social justice.
