A team of researchers from Michigan universities and hospitals has made
recommendations for Flint water customers to most effectively use the
point-of-use water filters on their taps.
The recommendations go beyond filter manufacturers' instructions. They
advise users to flush the pipes and filters for longer periods of time each
morning or after long periods of not using their water.
The research team is co-led by the University of Michigan and Wayne
State University, and includes faculty members from Michigan State
University, Kettering University and the Henry Ford Hospital System.

Through this partnership, nursing students were able to gain hands-on experience by delivering an evidence-based asthma self-management program to school-aged children with asthma while helping to improve health outcomes. Students reported developing their cultural competence and understanding of social justice issues, while also expanding their asthma knowledge. The community partner benefited from additional resources to address asthma. Parents and students noted feeling more empowered to manage asthma symptoms and being less afraid of activities due to improved understanding of asthma control.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a community-based program for managing severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in Bangladesh. 261 community health workers were trained to screen, assess, and treat children aged 6-36 months with SAM. Coverage was also high due to the decentralized network of health workers and community mobilization around SAM. Methods: This open label comparative design study randomized health professional clinicians to receive “practice points” on tendinopathy management via Twitter or Facebook. Evaluated outcomes included knowledge change and self-reported changes to clinical practice. Results: Four hundred and ninety-four participants were randomized to 1 of 2 groups and 317 responders analyzed. Both groups demonstrated improvements in knowledge and reported changes to clinical practice. There was no statistical difference between groups for the outcomes of knowledge change (P¼ .728), changes to clinical practice (P¼ .11) or the increased use of research information (P¼ .89). Practice points were shared more by the Twitter group (P < .001); attrition was lower in the Facebook group (P < .001). Conclusion: Research information delivered by either Twitter or Facebook can improve clinician knowledge and promote behavior change. No differences in these outcomes were observed between the Twitter and Facebook groups. Brief social media posts are as effective as longer posts for improving knowledge and promoting behavior change. Twitter may be more useful in publicizing information and Facebook for encouraging course completion. The Community Guide is being used in classrooms to teach public health students about evidence-based practice and real-world public health challenges. Professors at three universities require students to use The Community Guide for semester-long projects where they develop interventions for public health issues. The Community Guide exposes students to how interventions have worked in the past and helps them propose evidence-based solutions. It also teaches them the importance of using evidence to guide public health practice and program development.

This document describes a study assessing the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of university students at risk of becoming first-time electronic cigarette users. The study involved surveying 455 students, identifying 39 at-risk participants. Most students were aware of e-cigarettes and many had tried them or were contemplating using them. Based on pre-testing different communication designs with the at-risk group, three designs - a hand with text, aerosol spray can, and infographic - tested most favorably and will be implemented in a campus health communication campaign to educate students on e-cigarette risks. The project aims to contribute to the university's initiative to discourage first-time e-cigarette use among students.
