Impressively, a good physician-patient relationship is just as important to health outcomes as the use of well-established medical interventions. It is therefore critical that physicians and patients alike commit to the development of this important connection and explore opportunities to strengthen it.
In this presentation, I discuss what contributes to a healthy physician-patient relationship, concerns about how technology may threaten it, and how to best leverage technology to improve it.

Presidents United to Solve Hunger (PUSH) and Open Data a PUSH Universities
An international consortium of over 100 university presidents from five continents called Presidents United to Solve Hunger (PUSH) aims to end hunger and poverty through research, education, student engagement and outreach. A recent study assessed the open access and open data policies of 99 PUSH universities and found that while 15 have open access policies, none have open data policies. The study identified benefits and concerns of open data, and provided recommendations for universities to develop open data policies and infrastructure to support open data practices. These recommendations include communicating benefits, aligning policies with funder expectations, improving faculty compliance, refining policies, and creating infrastructure.

This document analyzes user engagement and post performance on the Facebook walls of 153 public health organizations from 2006 to 2015 using machine learning techniques. The analysis shows an increasing trend in user engagement with health posts over time. Photo posts received the highest engagement while link posts received medium engagement. Clustering the data identified that photo and link posts were most favorable for high and medium user engagement respectively.

Lessons learned can help other clinics develop similar POCPE programs to better educate patients.
Barriers and Enablers Associated with Differentiated Models of ART Distributi...
In an effort to expand access to antiretroviral treatment (ART), countries across sub-Saharan Africa have begun to implement and scale up differentiated approaches to ART distribution, particularly at the community level. These distribution models are typically designed to cater to stable adult patients and aim to bring ART closer to where patients live, which, in turn, serves to decongest clinics and reduce the overall strain on a country’s health system. While documentation on the results of these models exists, there is limited information on the specific barriers and enablers that have impacted the implementation of such models. This cross-country study describes various models of differentiated ART distribution and the barriers and enablers associated with their implementation.
The community models of ART distribution that were explored were: community adherence clubs, outreach and community distribution points.
It was concluded that While differentiated models of ART distribution aim to broaden patient access to ART, models that provide these services at the community level have additional challenges and considerations that should be assessed and planned for prior to implementation. Two important barriers seen across all countries assessed included stigma and poor linkage to care. Peer support and education for both patients and providers were noted as important drivers of the success of community models. Intensive education at the front-end of scale-up can help providers effectively market the community-level models and help patients pick a model that would work best for them. Understanding these barriers and enablers will help country programs effectively and efficiently implement differentiated models of ART distribution to fit varying contexts, and allow for rapid scale-up, resulting in expanded access to ART and the ability to better meet the demands of patients on ART on a global level.

A total of 17 promotores participated in the program, which included an initial assessment of their computer skills and informational needs. Based on the results, a 6-session curriculum was created covering basic computer skills, finding reliable health information online, website evaluation, and using resources to create educational materials for their communities. Post-training evaluations found that the promotores improved their computer skills and felt better prepared to address breast cancer in their work. Future iterations of the program will deliver more content online and utilize social media.

1. Choose 5 partnerships to engage and explain why you would invite each of these people//organizations to be a part of the coalition.
The creation of community health promotion and education programs takes into consideration several agencies or parties who help in the achievement of the desired health goals. Each of the partners will address its roles using different approaches depending on their area of expertise. This is an important factor to consider as different institutions address health promotion using different approaches and perspectives. The overall outcome from the contribution of every partner should be able to restore and promote the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological, and social wellness of the community in relation to the health issue being suffered (Minelli, & Breckon, 2009). Chronic diseases are currently the leading causes of death in the community due to their complexity and the severe effects on human health. The community health promotion and education program will be provided by the ‘Health Concerns Coalition’ which will be made up of the following partners; community religious groups, Cancer Supportive Care Foundation, an association of cancer-survivor patients, nutritional organizations, and the local authority.
1. Cancer Supportive Care Foundation – This is an important part of the coalition as it will offer technical expertise in education and diagnosis of chronic diseases. The foundation team will include medical experts who will diagnose the community members of any chronic illnesses. Examinations for diseases such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes and blood pressure will be conducted by this partner as they will provide modern machines needed for the diagnosis of chronic illnesses.

Bringing Public Health and Primary Care Together: The Practical Playbook National Meeting was at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, MD, May 22 - 24, 2016. The meeting was a milestone event towards advancing robust collaborations that improve population health. Key stakeholders from across sectors – representing professional associations, community organizations, government agencies and academic institutions – and across the country came together at the National Meeting to help catalyze a national movement, accelerate collaborations by fostering skill development, and connect with like-minded individuals and organizations to facilitate the exchange of ideas to drive population health improvement.

The Public Health Information Access Project (PHIA) aims to improve evidence-based public health practice by providing seamless access to published literature and other resources. PHIA identifies core trusted resources and makes them available through digital libraries for state public health departments. It also subsidizes access to other resources through participating National Network of Libraries of Medicine members. PHIA trains nearly 900 public health professionals and addresses limitations of previous short-term projects by providing sustainable long-term access to resources. Initial feedback indicates the digital libraries help inform policy development, program planning, and grant writing.

The Health Sciences Library at UNC-Chapel Hill partnered with two community colleges to assess the geriatric education needs of nursing students. They surveyed 165 students and 16 faculty members. The majority of students used Google, MedlinePlus, PubMed and Wikipedia for research. Based on the results, the library will create interactive online tutorials on geriatric topics incorporating case studies and simulation tools. They received further funding to develop these tutorials.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
