MCSP Overview
The Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) is USAID's flagship maternal and child health program, launched in 2014 with $500 million in funding over 5 years. MCSP works in 24 priority countries and additional countries to increase coverage of reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health interventions through strengthening health systems, focusing on innovation, and improving measurement and learning across households, communities, and health facilities to accelerate reductions in maternal and child mortality.
Presidents United to Solve Hunger (PUSH) and Open Data a PUSH Universities
An international consortium of over 100 university presidents from five continents called Presidents United to Solve Hunger (PUSH) aims to end hunger and poverty through research, education, student engagement and outreach. A recent study assessed the open access and open data policies of 99 PUSH universities and found that while 15 have open access policies, none have open data policies. The study identified benefits and concerns of open data, and provided recommendations for universities to develop open data policies and infrastructure to support open data practices. These recommendations include communicating benefits, aligning policies with funder expectations, improving faculty compliance, refining policies, and creating infrastructure.

Barriers and Enablers Associated with Differentiated Models of ART Distributi...
In an effort to expand access to antiretroviral treatment (ART), countries across sub-Saharan Africa have begun to implement and scale up differentiated approaches to ART distribution, particularly at the community level. These distribution models are typically designed to cater to stable adult patients and aim to bring ART closer to where patients live, which, in turn, serves to decongest clinics and reduce the overall strain on a country’s health system. While documentation on the results of these models exists, there is limited information on the specific barriers and enablers that have impacted the implementation of such models. This cross-country study describes various models of differentiated ART distribution and the barriers and enablers associated with their implementation.
The community models of ART distribution that were explored were: community adherence clubs, outreach and community distribution points.
It was concluded that While differentiated models of ART distribution aim to broaden patient access to ART, models that provide these services at the community level have additional challenges and considerations that should be assessed and planned for prior to implementation. Two important barriers seen across all countries assessed included stigma and poor linkage to care. Peer support and education for both patients and providers were noted as important drivers of the success of community models. Intensive education at the front-end of scale-up can help providers effectively market the community-level models and help patients pick a model that would work best for them. Understanding these barriers and enablers will help country programs effectively and efficiently implement differentiated models of ART distribution to fit varying contexts, and allow for rapid scale-up, resulting in expanded access to ART and the ability to better meet the demands of patients on ART on a global level.

Efforts to increase HPV Vaccination Rates at Local Health Departments FINAL

This program developed and delivered a computer literacy curriculum for promotores/community health workers along the Arizona-Mexico border to help address breast cancer knowledge gaps. A total of 17 promotores participated in the program, which included an initial assessment of their computer skills and informational needs. Based on the results, a 6-session curriculum was created covering basic computer skills, finding reliable health information online, website evaluation, and using resources to create educational materials for their communities. Post-training evaluations found that the promotores improved their computer skills and felt better prepared to address breast cancer in their work. Future iterations of the program will deliver more content online and utilize social media.
Physician-patient interaction and the Internet: The Canadian Experience
Physician-patient interactions are changing as both groups use the internet for health information. A survey found that most physicians search online for information and know patients do as well. While some physicians feel this has improved interactions by empowering informed patients, others worry about patients encountering inaccurate information. The USAID-funded MEASURE Evaluation project supported the Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to establish centers of excellence (COE) to improve data quality and use at health facilities. The COE program provided training to healthcare workers on health information systems, data collection and analysis. It equipped facilities with data management tools and implementation support. Initial results found improved health information management at COE facilities, though data use for decision making was still limited. The COE model was then expanded to additional health facilities in targeted health zones.

Centers of Excellence in Monitoring and Evaluation: An Approach to Improving ...
The USAID-funded MEASURE Evaluation project supported the Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to establish centers of excellence (COE) to improve data quality and use at health facilities. The COE program provided training to healthcare workers on health information systems, data collection and analysis. It equipped facilities with data management tools and implementation support. Initial results found improved health information management at COE facilities, though data use for decision making was still limited. The COE model was then expanded to additional health facilities in targeted health zones.

1. Choose 5 partnerships to engage and explain why you would invite each of these people//organizations to be a part of the coalition.
The creation of community health promotion and education programs takes into consideration several agencies or parties who help in the achievement of the desired health goals. Each of the partners will address its roles using different approaches depending on their area of expertise. This is an important factor to consider as different institutions address health promotion using different approaches and perspectives. The overall outcome from the contribution of every partner should be able to restore and promote the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological, and social wellness of the community in relation to the health issue being suffered (Minelli, & Breckon, 2009). Chronic diseases are currently the leading causes of death in the community due to their complexity and the severe effects on human health. The community health promotion and education program will be provided by the ‘Health Concerns Coalition’ which will be made up of the following partners; community religious groups, Cancer Supportive Care Foundation, an association of cancer-survivor patients, nutritional organizations, and the local authority.
1. Cancer Supportive Care Foundation – This is an important part of the coalition as it will offer technical expertise in education and diagnosis of chronic diseases. The foundation team will include medical experts who will diagnose the community members of any chronic illnesses. Examinations for diseases such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes and blood pressure will be conducted by this partner as they will provide modern machines needed for the diagnosis of chronic illnesses.

Surveys found frequent stock-outs of essential malaria and antibiotic drugs in health clinics due to funding gaps, shortages, and procurement challenges. A separate survey of 9 districts found a lack of financial transparency and accountability, as well as distrust between civil society organizations and district leaders. However, the research resulted in increased health sector funding, a priority on essential medicines, and district plans to improve accountability. Advocacy efforts must frame issues in policy contexts and have clear targets, disseminate findings widely through partnerships, and continue follow-up efforts to create impact.

The Public Health Information Access Project (PHIA) aims to improve evidence-based public health practice by providing seamless access to published literature and other resources. PHIA identifies core trusted resources and makes them available through digital libraries for state public health departments. It also subsidizes access to other resources through participating National Network of Libraries of Medicine members. PHIA trains nearly 900 public health professionals and addresses limitations of previous short-term projects by providing sustainable long-term access to resources. Initial feedback indicates the digital libraries help inform policy development, program planning, and grant writing.

Bringing Public Health and Primary Care Together: The Practical Playbook National Meeting was at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, MD, May 22 - 24, 2016. The meeting was a milestone event towards advancing robust collaborations that improve population health. Key stakeholders from across sectors – representing professional associations, community organizations, government agencies and academic institutions – and across the country came together at the National Meeting to help catalyze a national movement, accelerate collaborations by fostering skill development, and connect with like-minded individuals and organizations to facilitate the exchange of ideas to drive population health improvement.
