Librarians play an increasingly important role in healthcare institutions by searching relevant literature for clinicians. While clinicians can research themselves using online databases, many lack the skills, time or access to consistently find the best evidence. When librarians assisted with searches, they were able to solve 84% of clinicians' requests by accessing medical databases and selecting the most appropriate literature. While online information is abundant, clinicians require training on effective search strategies and using the best evidence in practice to provide successful patient treatment.

The pilot program embedded librarians in hospital committees to answer questions and collaborate. In 6 months, librarians answered 37 questions, mostly from nurses. Regular committee attendance helped librarians identify more needs. The program was successful and continued indefinitely to support nurses' evidence-based practice.

It found that nurses frequently need to access evidence to inform patient care but face challenges of lack of time and difficulty appraising research. The pilot program embedded librarians in hospital committees to answer questions and collaborate. In 6 months, librarians answered 37 questions, mostly from nurses. Regular committee attendance helped librarians identify more needs. The program was successful and continued indefinitely to support nurses' evidence-based practice.

Pirámide de las "5S" de Alper y Haynes_2016
En el año 2001, R. Brian Haynes (uno de los líderes naturales del Evidence-Based Medicine Working Group) sintetizó en un modelo piramidal de cuatro estratos los recursos de información en base a su utilidad y propiedades en la toma de decisiones en la atención sanitaria. Esta estructura jerárquica se denominó pirámidea de las “4S” por las iniciales en inglés de los cuatro recursos que la componen: Systems, Synopses, Syntheses y Studies.
El mismo autor añadió, en el año 2006, un estrato más a la pirámide (Summaries), conociéndose, por ello, como la pirámide de las “5S”. Finalmente, en el año 2011 se dividieron las Synopses en dos grupos (Synopses of Studies y Synopses of Syntheses), para conseguir la pirámide final de las “6S”, donde los niveles ascendentes entrañan un menor volumen de información, pero un mayor grado de procesamiento de la misma.
Y es hace tan solo unos meses, en el año 2016 cuando Haynes de nuevo (junto con B.S. Alper) simplifican de nuevo la pirámide y regresan a 5 escalones y que son, de abajo a arriba:

Foreground needs are directly related to a patient's diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis while background needs are for general information on conditions and diseases. Physicians seek information from various sources including medical journals, conferences, websites, colleagues, and personal libraries. Their information seeking is usually purposive to address gaps in knowledge needed to understand patient problems. They access information through their offices, medical libraries, and portable devices during working hours or emergencies.

This document provides an overview of evidence-based medicine (EBM). It defines EBM as systematically finding, appraising, and applying contemporaneous research findings to make clinical decisions. The key steps of EBM are asking a focused clinical question, searching for relevant evidence, critically appraising the evidence, applying valid evidence to the individual patient, and evaluating outcomes. High quality evidence comes from systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials. Practicing EBM helps ensure patients receive the best possible care based on the most current scientific knowledge.
