4. INTRODUCTION
In the early 1900s, the French psychologist Alfred Binet and his colleague Henri Simon
began working in Paris to develop a measure that would differentiate students who were
expected to be better learners from students who were expected to be slower learners. The
goal was to help teachers better educate these two groups of students. Binet and Simon
developed the first intelligence test ,which consisted of a wide variety of questions that
included the ability to name objects, define words, draw pictures, complete sentences,
compare items, and construct sentences.
Intelligence test, designed to measure the capacity to make abstractions, to learn, and to deal
with novel situations.
There are now a days different variations of this tests, which was designed to clarify to
identify children in need of remedial education. Intelligence, assessed through the various
intelligence tests is expressed in terms of Intelligence Quotient (I.Q.). Intelligence quotient
test attempt to measure and provide an intelligence quotient, which is a score derived from a
standardized test designed to access human intelligence.
Currently, IQ test are used to study distribution in scores amongst specific populations over
time , this course have come to be associated with differences with other variables such as
behaviour performance and wellbeing; this vary based on cultural norms. IQ tests measure
personal scores based on standard deviations from a well-established average, and are
thought to be relatively stable over time
Few questions need to be addressed before administering the I.Q, test are mentioned below-

5. WHAT IS INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT (I.Q.)?
An intelligence quotient is a total score derive from several standaralized tests designed to
assess human intelligence. The abbreviation IQ was coined by psychologist William Stern
for the german term ‘Intelligenz quoteint’.
WHAT IS IQ TEST?
Intelligence tests (IQ tests) are designed to give an intelligence quotient derived from a set of
standardized test scores. Intelligence test consists of a questionnaire or series of exercises
designed to measure intelligence.
WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF IQ TEST?
1. The goal of IQ test is to obtain an idea of the person’s intellectual potential.
2. The test centre around a set of stimuli designed to yield a score based on the test maker’s
model of what makes up intelligence.
3. An IQ tests are often given as a part of a battery of test.
4. The test objective is to assess an individual’s relative cognitive abilities and identify one’s
strengths. In the educational setting the result assists in identifying learning disabilities. IQ
Test addresses one’s overall verbal and non verbal abilities.
WHY IQ TEST IS NECESSARY IN SCHOOL?
There are many advantages of conducting IQ test in school. Some of them are mentioned
below-
1. Students with lower IQ scores get the extra help they need while students with higher IQ
scores get more challenging ad engaging course works.
2. They allow teacher and parents to chain in additional resources to students who need the
most.
3. It allow students to understand, focus on their intellectual strengths. For example a
student with great mathematical intelligence but low verbal intelligence might select a
career in engineering over journalism.
HOW IS IT MEASURED?
Intelligence is measured by either a group or individually administered test. Not all test that
claim to measure intelligence, however, are of equal validity. According to Alfred Binet, who
created an equation so that we could have a quick simple number that indicates where we
stand in comparing the chronological age and their mental age.
Mental age/chronological age x 100= IQ

6. IQ higher than 100 means is the person is a more intelligent than average, an IQ less than
100 means that the person is less intelligent than the average.
The other methods involve comparing scores against the scores of others in the individual’s
same age group. In this technique standardisation is employed to make it feasible to compare
and interpret the meaning of IQ scores (Rating scale method).

24. CONDUCTION OF INTELLIGENCE TEST
Conduction of IQ test is an integral part of the B.ed course, prescribed by Assam University,
Silchar. So during the practice teaching session, I conducted the test after seeking prior
permission of the Principal of the school. I selected 20 students each from class- vi(section-
A) , class-vii(section-B), and class- ix(section-B) of Daffodils High Sch;ool. To assess the
intelligence level of the students, I prepared 3 sets of questions, each of it consisted of 20
questions from four different categories, Mathematics, English, General knowledge and
spatial. Each question carries 1 marks and each of the sets carries 20 marks. Due emphasis
was given on the fact that the questions are age appropriate.
After preparing the sets, I took my guide’s consent and approval before conducting the test.
Then I conducted the test with absolute honesty and expected the active involvement of the
students . After conduction of the test, I analyzed the result on the basis of rating scale.
Students who scored below 30 are categorised under ‘below average’, 30-50 marks are taken
under ‘Average’, 50-60 marks under ‘Border line’, 60-70 as ‘Good’, 70-80 as ‘Very Good’,
80-90 as ‘Excellent’ and 90-100 as ‘Outstanding’.

From the graph it can be seen that only three students from Class-VI have scored ‘excellent’
marks and majority scored ‘Average’ marks. From class-VII no student scored ‘excellent’
marks and majority of them scored ‘Borderline’ marks. From class-IX, again we can see two
students scored ‘excellent’ marks and majority of them scored ‘Very Good’ marks.
It’s seen from the graph that most of the students scored Good, Border line, Average and
Very good marks. 1 student each from class VI and IX scored excellent marks. Not a single
student scored below average marks and outstanding marks. Comparatively, Class IX
performed little bit better than the other classes and class VII scored little lower than the rest
two classes.
Therefore, it can be said that the students of Daffodils High school are intelligent students.
Though these inferences aren’t rigid because they are based on a single test administered.

29. CONCLUSION
Intelligence Quotient test is the best way to measure a wide variety of human behaviour as
well as intelligence. It helps the educator to compare the intelligence of the students
belonging to the same age group and care for them accordingly. Intelligence tests are
excellent predictor of academic achievement and provide an outline of child’s mental strength
and weakness. This may in turn lead to an improvement in their educational opportunities.
Though some experts argue that Intelligence test have few shortcomings as many Intelligence
test produce single intelligence score is often inadequate in explaining multi dimensional
aspects of Intelligence.
Overall an adequate intelligence test is valuable to know how a child’s performance in
various tasks that make up school curriculum.
