Early intervention programs that begin in kindergarten or first grade and work with students for more than five months up to a year have been shown to be more successful than shorter programs. Successful programs have smaller instructional groups, with one-on-one intervention being the most effective. Core reading programs now offer supplemental intervention programs to provide extra support to struggling readers. These programs should be evaluated based on criteria such as explicit instruction of reading strategies, scaffolding of new skills, integration of strategies, priming of background knowledge, judicious review, and well-paced lessons. Two intervention programs described in the document, My Sidewalks and Strategic Intervention Kit, meet some criteria but lack scaffolding and explicit explanation of linking strategies
