Protagonist VS
Antagonist
Ben
+
Protagonist
 The Protagonist is usually the main
character in a novel or story that all the
action evolves around. Their feelings
and thoughts are usually expressed the
clearest as the film develops.
 Usually has a weakness, from something
physically, from a event from the past.
 The Protagonist usually expresses love
and fear for someone, or something.
Fear is a common emotion, and the
characters must be as ‘real’ as possible.
+
Protagonist
 The protagonist usually also shows some sort of struggle or
pain, and their needs to be a conflict or task the protagonist has
to overcome.
“The leading character or one of the
major characters in a play, film, novel,
etc”
+
Antagonist
 The antagonist is someone who
opposes, competes or fights with the
main character.
 They cause problems for the
protagonist throughout the film.
 An antagonist is driven to cause
conflict on the main character out of
spite, or a deeper reason.
+
Antagonist
 Five ways to create a ‘powerful’ antagonist:
1. Mystery around the person, a weakness may be shown (and
doesn’t have to be the opposite of that shown from the
protagonist)
2. Portray them in a darker light or mood compared to the
protagonist.
3. Sinister Dialogue
4. They do things that annoy, or stop the protagonist.
5. No feelings or emotion shown, no regret and sympathy
shown from the antagonist.
+
Antagonist
“A person who actively opposes or is
hostile to someone or something; an
adversary”
