This document provides an overview of diction, tone, and style for creative writing. It defines each term and gives examples. Diction refers to word choice, and for creative writing it aims for an imaginative vocabulary. Tone is the attitude conveyed through word choices and viewpoint. Style comprises literary devices that set one author apart, including voice, imagery, and syntax. The document emphasizes that an author's style and voice come from their unique diction and experience. Students are assigned an art project analyzing a favorite excerpt and expressing its meaning through drawing.

Diction refers to the choice and use of
words and phrases in speech or writing.
For creative writing, it has a more
inventive, imaginative, and picturesque
diction (Nery, 2017).

Tone, in written composition, is an
attitude of a writer toward a subject or
an audience. Tone is generally conveyed
through the choice of words, or the
viewpoint of a writer on a particular
subject.

Style comprises many literary devices
that an author employs to create a
distinct feel for a work. These devices
include, but are not limited to, point of
view, symbolism, tone, imagery, diction, voice,
syntax, and the method of narration.
7. Diction
• By the author’s diction, you can identify which writings
are comedies and tragedies; love poems or fairy tales; horror stories
or psychological thrillers; teenage juvenilia or mature works of the
same author (Nery, 2017)
8. Style
• Style is pretty much related to diction because, sometimes,
just by mere diction, you can tell whether the author is
male, female, gay, Filipino, or foreigner, or just three years old!
(Nery, 2017)
9. • You may even be able to tell which author wrote which
poem or novel without looking at the byline or book cover.
Therefore, the author’s style of writing is greatly related
to his/her diction or choice of words (Nery, 2017).
• Style is simply the way in which an author writes and/or
tells a story. It’s what sets one author apart from another
and creates the “voice” that audiences hear when they
read.

Style
10. Style lets an author share his content in the way that he
wants. Say, an author needs to describe a situation where he
witnessed a girl picking a flower:
• She picked a red rose from the ground.
• Scarlet was the rose that she plucked from the earth.
• From the ground she delicately plucked the ruby rose, cradling
it in her hands as if it were a priceless jewel.

Style
11. Tone
• It can be light as in a joke, severe as in a sermon, friendly as
in a letter, seductive as in a love poem, technical as in an
instruction manual, serious as in a contract, cold and distant
as in an autopsy report, or passionate and electrifying as in a
good political speech (Nery, 2017).
• The writer’s tone creates an atmosphere or mood for the
story.
12. Example #1
Father: “We are going on a vacation.”
Son: “That’s great!!!”
– The tone of son’s response is very cheerful.

Example #2
Father: “We can’t go on vacation this summer.”
Son: “Yeah, great! That’s what I expected.”
– The son’s tone is sarcastic.
Tone
13. Can your
diction be elegant
and still have a
harsh tone?
Can you insult
someone using a
polished and
gorgeous diction?
14. “Oh, my! What a beautiful
dress you have. Did you
just make it? The fabric is
just glorious; we had it for
curtains at home.”
15. Your writing style is affected by your diction.
Your unique and special literary voice is a product of your
diction, imagination, experience, dreams, and ambition
Your diction is your voice, is your style, is your art.
Keep it unique!
16. 1. Select an excerpt of your favorite book or line of your favorite
