Analysis Of The Right Stuff By Tom Wolfe
The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe chronicles the beginning of the United States space program and the
Space Race against the Soviets through the eyes of America s first astronauts and those around them in
the style of new journalism. The Right Stuff may seem like an odd title for a book about astronauts
and space exploration, as it appears to have nothing to do with either, but it is a theme that is explored
throughout the book. Put simply, the right stuff is a quality that a test pilot or astronaut possessed that
enabled them to be the best. It was not typical bravery, a person either had it or they didn t, and its
possessors seemed to be above the rules.
The right stuff was not only classic bravery as one would imagine, but bravery was certainly ... Show

Even so, there wasn t a specific test to prove if one had it or didn t have it. Instead, it was a continuous
pyramid of tests that one must conquer, and those who failed to prove themselves at any level of the
pyramid certainly did not have the right stuff. Wolfe notes that, ...the idea was to prove at every foot of
the way up that pyramid that you were one of the elected and anointed ones who had the right stuff
and could move higher and higher and even...that you might be able to join that special few at the very
top..., the very Brotherhood of the Right Stuff itself. Every level in the pyramid presented more
challenging demands where, ...the world was once again divided into those men who had the right
stuff to continue the climb and those who had to be left behind in the most obvious way. Those who
failed to prove themselves and were left behind most definitely did not have the right stuff and were
left to pursue a career in a less demanding wing of flight testing where the concept of the right stuff
did not pertain. In the early levels of the pyramid some people were left behind because they couldn t
take the coursework or were unable to complete a phase in their training such as carrier landings
Others were left behind because they were deemed medically unfit to take on the task of becoming a
test pilot, something that was beyond their control but was sometimes still seen as a failure. In the
higher and more dangerous levels of the pyramid some were left behind only because they were no
longer alive to continue climbing the pyramid. When faced with this reality some men would
voluntarily decide to no longer continue climbing the pyramid, although this meant sacrificing the
notion of ever having the right

Lincoln. He had one older sister, Sarah, and one younger brother, Thomas who died very young. At
the age of nine his mother died of milk sickness. His father found a new wife and the kids grew close
to their step mom. Abe only went to school for a short time, but his step mom was very encouraging
about his education. He was very good at helping out around the farm as well as educating himself. As
a young adult Abraham Lincoln had many jobs. He sailed ferry boats, postmaster, store clerk, and
railsplitter. However, he was most interested in being a lawyer and politician. His first job with

The Powers Of The Mediterranean
Powers of the Mediterranean
In the 3rd century B.C.E. there were two great powers in the area surrounding the Western part of the
Mediterranean Sea, The African/Spanish Empire of Carthage and the Italian Empire of Rome. Both
empires were rapidly expanding their territory while ultimately avoiding each other. Carthage had
conquests in South West Europe in modern day Spain, while the Romans were working their way East
into Macedonia. Rome and Carthage were both major powers controlling what to them was the entire
world. These two powers are very similar and very different, but after a conflict between them started
only one would make it out alive.
Before the wars began, in the 9th century B.C.E. a Phoenician Queen known most commonly by Dido,
founded a city in Northern Africa, in modern day Tunisia, Known as Kart hadasht or translating to
new city . The Greeks called this city Karchedon which the Romans adapted to Carthago, or Carthage.
(Mark 2011)
Before Rome, Carthage the center of trade through out the Mediterranean. Upon the fall of the
Phoenician city of Tyre after the conquests of Alexander the Great, Tyrains fled to the city of
Carthage. Most of these refugees were extremely wealthy, and upon their settlement at Carthage, they
expanded Carthage s trade substantially. Carthage was experienced with naval warfare and fought
their battles with mercenaries, soldiers paid to fight. (Rodriguez n.d.)
Comparing to Carthaginian history, there is a lot more documented history

Constitutional Amendments, Bangladesh
CONSTITUTION The fundamental law, written or unwritten, that establishes the character of a
government by defining the basic principles to which a society must conform; by describing the
organization of the government and regulation, distribution, and limitations on the functions of
different government departments; and by prescribing the extent and manner of the exercise of its
sovereign powers. A legislative charter by which a government or group derives its authority to act.
The concept of a constitution dates to the city states of ancient Greece. The philosopher Aristotle

secular and liberal democratic nature of the constitution. THE CONSTITUTION OF THE PEOPLE S
REPUBLIC OF BANGLADESH AMENDMENTS CONSEQUENCES The original Constitution of
Bangladesh introduced a parliamentary form of government with the President as its constitutional
head. It provides a responsible executive, a non sovereign legislature and an independent judiciary
with appropriate separation of powers, and checks and balances among them. The supreme law of
Bangladesh, the Constitution, confers only limited law making competence on Parliament. Parliament
does not possess any intrinsic law making power, which derives from the constitution. The parliament
cannot make any law in contravention with the provisions of the constitution. The Constitution
embodies the principle of ministerial responsibility, both individual and collective, to the parliament
and ultimately to the people, the source of all powers in the republic . Bangladesh started its journey
with a parliamentary form of democracy, derailed afterwards from the fundamental aspiration of
democratic governance by introducing one party political system with an all powerful head of the state

Film Analysis Of The Movie Inception
The film Inception captured the imagination of many spectators as one of the best science fiction and
thriller movies to be produced that year. It was produced and directed by Christopher Nolan who also
directed The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. Inception is based on the basic inspiration that a
single idea in an individual s mind can be either the most valuable asset or the most dangerous
weapon.
Inception is a science fiction thriller movie. This genre deals with situations and technology that
would be classified as scientific, but does not exist in real life. Inception connects with this because of
the technology they used to enter the dreams. Although it was never explained, the machine seems to
pump somnacin into the body. Somnacin is a drug utilized to initiate dream sharing and lucid
dreaming. The movie is also classified as a thriller because of the exciting plot. It has intense chase
scenes, gun fire, explosions, and fight scenes all within the dream state. The expectation for the movie
based on the trailer would be constant action. It seems that the main character is away from his family
and is trying to get home, but the only way he can is to do one last job. In the trailer the statement your
mind is the scene of the crime is shown, this indicates that most of the content will be in the dreams of
the subject.
Inception is about as many as four levels of dreams within dreams, and dreams that eclipse reality.
There seem to be two themes discussed in

Argumentative Essay On Self Reliance
Everyone in life has at least one person who has strongly influenced them in one way or another, but
what if that influence ended up being hurtful? In the essay Self Reliance by Ralph Emerson, Emerson
gives his advice on how to live independently. Emerson says self reliance is to trust oneself and
believe in oneself. He states that this is important because being self reliant leads to a successful path
in life. By having individual ideas one will end up doing something she or he wants to do in life which
causes success for that individual. He discusses how the only person one needs to listen to in life is
oneself and that no other person should influence one s life. I believe there are people in this world
that can have a negative influence on one s life, but also people that can have a positive influence. For
example, in basketball my positive influences (parents, teammates, and coaches) help me to succeed in
a team sport. Emerson begins his article by talking about the importance of self reliance. He defines
self reliance as thinking for oneself and not letting anyone else influence one in any way, shape, or
form. As a human being this may be one of the most difficult tasks. Emerson explains that being self
reliant can be difficult especially for adults because they are too worried about their reputations and
how others will look upon them. Emerson also says, Trust thyself (2). Emerson believes that one
should go with his or her gut in everything she or he does. Even if what she or he wants to do goes
against the thoughts of others she or he still needs to pursue his or her dreams. The last thing Emerson
wants people to do is be embarrassed of what others will think of themselves. People need to throw
away others thoughts and opinions and follow one s own.
Emerson also believes that one can be great through being self reliant. He says, To be great is to be
misunderstood (7). This tells one that if others seem to be judging or confused on what one is doing
with his or her life, one should ignore the others, and continue to follow what she or he believes.
Emerson explains that if one is misunderstood by others that she or he is on the path to success. For
example, when Jesus followers were

Bowenian Family Systems Therapy Summary
One of the main approaches that can be used with this family is Bowenian s Family Systems Therapy
which emphasizes helping family members differentiate from their family of origin and help them to
develop healthy relationships with their current family members (Hook, 2014). One of the
assumptions of this theory is that multi generational trends or pattern have a great effect on an
individual family member s emotions, thinking or behavior, which results in the continuing the same
trend. Families do not act autonomously, but they are essentially tied with their emotional behavior.
This is known as the multigenerational transmission process (Gilbert, 2006). The primary goal of this
therapy is to help family members differentiate from their family ... Show more content on

The client had reported these patterns to be considered to be generational curses , which implies that
the family does not want to continue in these patterns. These instances can be viewed as traumatic
events and negatively impacted the emotional well being of the members in the family. For this
approach, the genogram is viewed as an essential intervention for allowing family to recognize
intergenerational patterns (Hook, 2015). During session with the family, the genogram could help the
family to open up about their sexual abuse and how it was dealt with the past. They can also process
their feelings of having to raise children on their own. By identifying these patterns, that family could
look for potential solutions or options for breaking or avoiding this risk factor. Since the client
reported that sexual abuse is not really expressed in her family, it is assumed that the family members
affected by this experience have unresolved issues and unhealthy emotional connections. The family
session could be used for the family members to process those emotions and develop new positive

Donald Trump And Hillary Clinton
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are two possible contenders to represent their political parties in
the upcoming presidential elections in 2016. After several GOP/Democratic debates, Trump and
Clinton have firmly addressed their immigration reform plans, which greatly contrast with one
another.
Before running for the presidency, Donald Trump was, and still is, a business magnate. His
immigration reform focuses on three fundamental principles in order to make America great again.
Firstly, Trump believes a nation without a border is simply not a nation, which is a key principle,
central to his campaign. Secondly, Trump states that A nation without laws is not a nation.
Consequently, he is determined to strictly enforce both old and new laws made during his presidency.
Lastly, Trump believes that a nation must first prioritize its citizens, in terms of employment, wages
and safety (Trump, 2015).
To enforce his first principle, Donald Trump plans to construct a wall along the southern border in
between the U.S. and Mexico, which he guarantees the Mexican government will be fully financially
responsible for. He strongly believes that the U.S. taxpayers have been directly affected by this
situation in terms of increased health care, housing and education costs etc. which are caused by the
transfer of crime and poverty that comes with illegal immigration from Mexico (Trump, 2015).
Although as a senator, Clinton voted several times to construct a barrier with the intent of

alternative options. Thus it seems that they are treating the situations as calling for remedial action

applied when the participants both feel no redress is necessary for the sake of efficiency. However,
this does not seem to be the case in these situations, seeing that the majority of the other participants
use redressive actions. Consequently, Kat and Fran might come across as slightly impolite to the
audience. It is even suggested by Goffman (1967) that a person who can witness another person s

he calls Fran a cruel mistress in line 8, even though it can be assumed it is not meant as a serious insult
considering their joking conversations that they had during the date. Whether by complimenting the

Great Leap Forward Summary
10. Diamond characterizes the Great Leap Forward as the stage in human development when humans
became seemingly more modern and more similar, biologically and behaviorally, to the human today.
This leap occurred around 50,000 years ago, the signs being standardized tools, preserved jewelry, and
the completely modern skeletons of the Cro Magnon.
11. The major human achievements that characterize the Great Leap Forward can be defined by the
first ever preserved jewelry and methodized tools made out of stone. Other major human
achievements at this time included complex weaponry that could kill from a secure distance, much
like the mechanics of the weaponry we have and still use in battle today. The most marvelous as well
as most known achievement of the Cro Magnons would have to be their artwork though, due to its
wondrous beauty in the eyes of many.
12. The technological advancement of watercraft was necessary for the colonization of New Guinea
and Australia approximately 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Diamond proposes the theory that the disappearance of mega fauna in Australia/New Guinea was due
to human interaction. The animals of Australia and New Guinea had not yet been introduced to
humans, eliminating the chance of coevolution. They became extinct in every habitat without
exception...the giants were indeed exterminated by humans, both directly (by being killed for food)
and indirectly (as a result of fires and habitat modification caused by humans). It seems that Diamond
primarily believed that the extinction of the many mega fauna was entirely the fault of the humans and
not at all because of the animals changing habitat. Due to the fact that the mega fauna of Australia and
New Guinea were not prepared for the arrival of humans, they were successfully hunted to the
ultimate death:

The United States Should Build A Wall
Whether or not the United States should build a wall to secure the border around Mexico is a
controversial topic. The controversy is mainly over the cost and true purpose of the wall. Many people
wonder if there is a need for the wall to be built, while others are pushing for the massive wall to be
built. Many do not believe the wall would stop the immigrants from illegally crossing at all. Human
migration routes are like rivers: If they hit an obstacle, the flow finds a way around it (Chappell).
Although the idea of building a wall is controversial, many would agree that the idea is expensive, a
waste of time, and ridiculous.
The wall would be a very expensive project for the government to pursue. Originally, during Trump s

The treaties between the United States and Mexico that prohibit the blockage of rivers across the
border would be roadblocks in President s Trump s plan (Aguilera). Another one would be the Native
American reservations along the borders. It would be a waste of time for the government to have the
wall built only to have gaps within the wall due to restrictions. Trump would be able to get around
these restrictions by convincing Congress to pass a bill that would take the land away from the Native
Americans, but that would only start chaos. Most of the land currently without a border fence cannot
withstand the construction of a wall because of the geography by which it is surrounded. Due to this,
there will be gaps within the wall through which immigrants would be able to enter. The wall is
viewed as a ridiculous idea because it realistically will not fulfill the desires President Trump has. The
wall will not only cost billions of dollars, but will also not keep out all of the illegal immigrants. It can
even keep in the ones that are in the United States today as illegal. The illegals currently in the country
would be turned away at the idea of crossing back over the border to see their families after they learn
that a more secure border is being put in place (Falkenberg). The people who want to cross over to the
United States legally have a difficult time acquiring their citizenship

Extreme Right Movement
Introduction
After several failed attempts to establish a Post War organization for the extreme far right wing
citizens of Germany, the first successful extreme right movement drew from the foundation of the
National Democratic Party of Germany, known as the NPD, in 1964. In the late 1960 s, it was
expanded by victories in seven of the ten state parliaments and was widely expected to make it into
the Bundestag. At its highest point, the party could boast a count of some 28,000 members. This may
not seem like a huge portion of the German population, but it does account for almost ž of the
organized German right wing extremists. The NPD has failed to overcome the hurdle of a minimum
vote to enter the Bundestag due to suffering a string of setbacks ... Show more content on

In fact, the party has long been anti constitutional, in addition to being anti establishment. The German
state certainly has legal means at its disposal to impose a ban upon the party, should it deem that the
National Democratic Party has become a threat to national security. This has even been tried in the
past, but the rst attempt to do so, in 2001 2003, did not succeed. Attempts of banning the group will
focus less on NPD behaviors of xenophobic and anti Semitic rhetoric, and place more focus on their
anti constitutional tendencies. In 2012, an effort to eliminate the NPD was introduced into the courts,
but a decision had not been made at the time. Chancellor Merkel has yet to place a ban, and states that
her administration will not be seeking to disband the party. Merkel went further by stating that she did
not consider a renewed ban application necessary, even considering their militant aggressive attitude
towards the existing order. Success of ban would make NPD the third party blacklisted in view of
being unconstitutional in post war Germany. The failure to dislodge the NPD from the political sphere
has discouraged any further efforts since. The primary reason for the failure of the attempted ban was
simply strategic: The German security service had managed to covertly penetrate the NPD, and there
were fears that if the party went

5) Discuss the different types of traps and seals and the importance of timing . Give an example
related to the Middle East.
Trap can be defined as shield against oil and gas movement. In other words, the trap system had been
set up before the migration of oil and/or gas to this location. After coming across the trap, oil and gas
finished their journey under the ground if the trap is settled well. (I ignore some leakage of them). By
the way, trap could be just structure as barren or could be productive.
The highest point of the trap is the crest, or culmination. The lowest point at which hydrocarbons may
be contained in the trap is the spill point; this lies on a horizon contour, the spill plane. The vertical
distance from crest to spill plane is the closure of the trap. A trap may or may not be full to the spill
plane, a point of both local and regional significance. Note that in areas of monoclinal dip the closure
of a trap may not be the same as its structural relief. This situation is particularly significant in
hydrodynamic traps. The zone immediately beneath the petroleum is referred to as the bottom water,
and the zone of the reservoir laterally adjacent to the trap as the edge zone.

fatwas (legal edicts) opposed to the stationing of US troops in Saudi Arabia. By middle of 1996, Al
Qaeda was barely functioning as a terrorist organization, and had only thirty members. Facing
irrelevance and anxious that he was losing his leadership role over Islamist militants worldwide, bin

Using Devices Used For Chemical Reactions
In the material industry, energy efficiency, production cost, and sustainability have become very
important factors now a days. There is an increasing acceptance of microwave technique due to its fast
processing, simplicity, energy efficiency and cost effectiveness. It is a tool that not only provides
solutions to industry but also attracts materials chemists who are looking for better and reliable
methods to access new and potentially useful materials. Microwaves devices designed specifically for
chemical synthesis thus make things easier for industrial and academic chemists alike.1 So, this
technique becomes a widely accepted energy source for performing chemical reactions.
Although microwave synthesis is relatively a modern technique, the first synthetic application was
reported in 1971.2 However, considerable attention in the field was observed in 1986 when significant
rate acceleration was achieved for reactions carried out in a conventional microwave oven.3 This
success aroused scientist to develop more advanced microwave devices designed for chemical
synthesis. Since then microwave is getting more common technique in organic synthesis and solution
phase chemistry.4,5,6 Organic reactions such as esterification, etherification, hydrolysis, substitution
reactions and Diels Alder reactions have been studied in the microwave oven and relevant examples
can be found in the literature. The application of microwave is not restricted to organic synthesis as

William Shakespeare s Time
The timeless, genius, iconic writer Shakespeare, still to this day has his stories and plays executed and
performed. Throughout decades the writer s stories stand strong. Now for nearly five hundred years,
his work of tales and stories remain and are idolized. Shakespeare s many plays still are relevant even
with how immensely the time has changed. Then again, today s time has evolved and grown very far
from what William Shakespeare s knew in his life time. Many such topics such as, marriages and how
our society views them. How theaters are meant to be, and how they are structured with rules. Our
entertainment coming from actors and actresses, and how we respect them. And even how we see

The first concept of how Shakespeare s time is much different than our own, is how we perceive the
entire idea and thought of how a theater should be treated and how it works. The obvious first thought
that comes to our mind, is that we now have grown to watch television shows and movies much more

Predictive analysis considers previous data and predicts future data points, but predictive analysis fails
to consider new variables to practice and judge results. In this case, hypothesis helps to analyze old
data to set benchmark and set goal to achieve the new variable modified.
Hypothesis helps in making decision by comparing benchmark values and present results with the
variables applied. If Hypothesis is used to predict the future results this will be more about decision to
conclude whether to implement/accept or reject. Again, Hypothesis also use all statistical modals of

The Similarities Of Frank Wright And Frank OGehry
More and more people create our hotels, schools, homes, theme parks, and several other structures.
Those people are called architects, they are people who design buildings and construct them in some
cases. People may also define them as scientists and artists. Frank Wright and Frank O Gehry are
similar, however, they have their own unique style and design when it comes to buildings. Frank
Wright (1867 1959), is an American architect born on June 8th in Richland Center, Wisconsin
(Biography.com n.d.). A modern design, he produced an organic and clear American style
(Architectural Digest n.d.). Wright founded his own firm and developed the Prairie School single story
homes with low, slanted roofs and extended rows on the windowpane, using the available materials
from local business and clean and not painted wood (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica 2017).
The Robie House (Figure 1) located in Chicago and Unity Temple placed in Oak Park (Biography.com
n.d.). Wright was known mainly in Europe but not in the United States. In 1913, Wright designed his
home on his maternal ancestors land in Spring Green, Wisconsin (Architectural Digest n.d.). This

Differences Between Meiosis And Eukaryotes
Eukaryotes can reproduce in two ways, via mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is a process of cell division
where a single round of replication is followed by separation of sister chromatids to form 2 daughter
cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell. On the other hand, during meiosis, a single round
of DNA replication is precedes two rounds of cell divisions leading to the formation of haploid gamete
from a diploid parent (Figure 1). Figure 1: In meiosis, the DNA replication occurs in S phase followed
by two rounds of replication. Homologs are segregated during meiosis I and sisters during meiosis II.
Meiosis I is a reductional cell division, where sister chromatids are mono oriented and homologous
chromosomes that are pulled to the opposite poles. The proper segregation of homologous
chromosome is mainly ensured by meiotic recombination that leads to the formation of a physical link
between them (Chiasmata). Meiotic recombination also leads to the exchange of genetic material
between the homologous chromosomes, leading to genetic variation. Meiosis II (like mitosis) is an
equational division, where the sister chromatids are segregated to form gametes with half the genetic
composition as the parents. The two gametes from different individuals so formed then fuse via ...

Three of these are subsequently degraded and one undergoes a round of mitosis. The conjugating
partners exchange one of the progeny MIC that fuses with the other to form a diploid MIC. The
zygotic MIC undergoes two more rounds of mitosis. 2 of these form the new MIC and 2 form a new
MAC and the parental MAC starts to degrade. For the formation of the new MACs from the zygotic
MAC, RNAi mediated DNA elimination and chromosome breakage sequence followed by telomere

The Thought and Influence of Voltaire Essay
The Thought and Influence of Voltaire
I The legacy of François Marie Arouet, or Voltaire is not only a vast collection of writings, but also a
world that has been radically and directly affected by these works and the activities of their author.
While Voltaire did not create many of the ideas he professed, his success at disseminating these is
unparalleled. He summed up with the most panache of anyone of his day the central issues of the
Enlightenment, and rallied with the greatest fervour to see his beliefs tangibly realised.
This paper will focus on Voltaire s stances on vital issues, their weight versus the ideas and practices
against which they are reactions, and their influence on both 18th century Europe and the modern
West. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cosmology Like many of the philosophes, Voltaire was a deist. He believed that, although God was
not one to intervene in earthly affairs, such an entity did exist. The scientific revolution had
demonstrated that the universe operated according to rational mechanics. Therefore, resembling a
machine, it must have an engineer behind it.5[5] While deist theories about space and time are
muddled and confusing for those of us who take modern science for granted (particularly in their
dependence on the concept of God),6[6] their nascent determinism is very familiar in this age where
behaviourism is so popular. Mired in Newtonian causality, Voltaire (echoing John Locke) believed that
action is the effect of which the will is the cause. The cause of the will is the effect of environment.
The environment is part of the clockwork universe made and wound by God.7[7] While this theory
brings environment into the discussion of development of personality, it makes people into passive
receptacles and cogs in machines.8[8]
Voltaire s belief in God was partly pragmatic. He recognised the difficulty of maintaining an ethical
system without rewards and punishments. The Christian tradition had so long used heaven and hell as
motivational factors that it was hard by the 18th century to imagine morality for its own sake. While
just laws would ensure just actions by the general population,

No Big Secret That The Evangelical Community Essay
It is no big secret that the evangelical community played a role in Trump s winning of the election. He
had solid Christian support throughout his campaign; at least so it seemed. Obviously, people of all
sorts Christian or not Republican or not were frustrated at the lack of options. I understand. I was one
of them. People were also rightly concerned about Hillary. They were left with a choice of either
Armageddon or slow rot. Much was at stake especially the Supreme Court. I was in a unique place of
one who has just discovered that the candidate I might have begrudgingly voted for voted for was, in
fact, The Antichrist; a scenario that elevates such decisions to another dimensional reality. After I had
shared my thoughts regarding Trump with several Christians supporting him, I often got the question
posed to me: Well, who do we vote for? As far as I was concerned, the vote was already cast. I knew
the outcome. I would often tell people, If you want to vote for Trump, vote for Trump. You will be
voting for the winner. The voting thing for me was not much of an issue because Trump s win was
predestined.
Revelation 17 speaks of the religious component of The Whore of Babylon; a last days religious
system temporarily in bed with the beast (The Antichrist). Since Rev. 17 is focused primarily on the
whore and not on The Antichrist, I will not be going verse by verse as I did in chapter 13.

A Unique Point Of View
A Unique Point of View Unique point of view strongly influences Scott F. Fitzgerald s Bernice Bobs
Her Hair and Sandra Cisneros short story Eleven. Bernice Bobs Her Hair portrays a girl willing to
give up her unique character to form a new and attractive personality from the help from those around
her which she hopes will make her more mentally attractive. Furthermore, Sandra Cisneros Eleven
captures a girl emotionally unsettled who observes in herself that while she turns eleven, she also
portrays emotions from her past ages of ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one
through a dilemma caused by her misunderstanding teacher. Both authors incorporate comparable and
contrasting point of view styles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Comparably, in Bernice Bobs Her Hair this problem also lies great since the entirety of its story
Fitzgerald writes in third person. Third person provides an impeccable description of every situation,
however, without shifting to any other point of view, Fitzgerald disadvantages the reader in obtaining
a more personal view of one of the main characters. For example, at the time where Bernice is about
to cut off her cousin Marjorie s hair it states, She was by the bedside now, very deliberate and calm.
She acted swiftly. Bending over she found one of the braids of Marjorie s hair, followed it up with her
hand to the point nearest the head, and then holding it a little slack so that the sleeper would feel no
pull, she reached down with the shears and severed it. Without the use of first or second person, the
reader lacks in attaining Bernice s thoughts leading up to her drastic action and cutting off Marjorie s
hair. Overall, through both stories use of one main point of view, reader s lack attaining a different
perspective of Fitzgerald s Bernice Bobs Her Hair and Cisneros Eleven.
Second, Bernice Bobs Her Hair more effectively uses narration in its story since Fitzgerald uses an
omniscient narrative presence so that the reader can get a glimpse of all the characters thoughts and
feelings. This overall better use of narration reoccurs throughout the book such as at the time that
Rachel asks Charley s opinion whether or not she should bob her hair by

Business Acumen
My current manager has got to be the most applicable reference to business acumen that I can think of.
I have worked for the Federal Government for 4 years now, and have worked for my current boss for 2
of those years. Her name is Cindy and she is without a doubt the best boss I have ever had.
Throughout my time here, Cindy has taught me the ins and outs of supply chain, product management,
and so much more. Although she is incredibly efficient at her job and the tasking it entails, I have
found that it is not her true passion. Cindy loves to help people. She has made it her mission in life to

As stated by Drucker in this week s reading ...you couldn t predict the environment of the future.
However, what you could do is create the future (Cohen, 2008). Throughout my years here, I have
seen the forward thinking mentality of Cindy. She is truly a woman beyond her years. She has spent
the last 20 years creating a name for herself in this organization and it has certainly not gone
unnoticed. I have witnessed the creation of new programs used to support the fleet, and even Cindy s
hands on approach to problem solving at the root of the issue, as opposed to waiting until the issue hit
her desk. This is another aspect of business acumen that I believe Cindy truly possessed; the ability to
handle decisions so that the future brings good outcomes. I could never ask for a better working
environment or a better, more knowledgeable boss. I have observed these skills and will apply them to
my career one day. I hope to be a manager that people enjoy working for, but also trust to make the
right decisions for all parties involved. I believe I have learned those traits from Cindy in my very
short, but very informative time here.

Compare and Contrast Two Works of Art
Anthony Arteaga
Art History Ancient World
Homework Assignment #1
Compare and contrast the subject, concept, and the Formal Element of the two works of art. Also,
explain which category this work falls in. The two pieces I have chosen can be found on page 200,
figure 6 51, Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian s Villa and on page 434, figure 14 8,
Battle of the Bird and Serpent. Not only did I choose these pieces for their beauty, but also because
both works have similar yet different subjects, concepts, and formal elements. Both of these images
have subject matter that is the same even though they re different.

Also, the shapes in the background are fuzzier and assumed in piece one where the shapes in piece
two are sharper and more defined. Another formal element is texture. The first piece, according to the
text, is a floor mosaic which is composed of many colored tesserae that were laid down in irregular,
curving lines, which effectively imitated painted brushstrokes. The individual tiles are more apparent
when viewed closely. This gives the piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it physically looks
bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat surface in which figures
and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second piece was drawn with tempera
on parchment. This makes the piece look smooth, flat, and two dimensional. The next element is color.
The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Both pieces have a low level of saturation. In piece
one, the sky is mustard brown with a section of mint green that frames the boulder that the male
centaur is holding. The rocky scenery has browns and creams with a dull green and brown center. A
bright green patch of pine trees is in the corner that contrasts with the sky and rocks. The colors to the
second piece are similar in the sense that it has low saturation. The colors are dull and warm. This
piece utilizes reds and oranges, in the serpent, that the first piece does not. Because of the tan

be enjoying herself. She was friendly then, too.She was like a real mother and he was like a real child

hisefforts to please her, which often met with annoyance. On good days, Jimmy found hera bit
frightening, a bit too much like an image of a perfect mother. She seems like anexample of Chodorow

husband (79). Jimmy quickly realizes thathe must bend to his mother s moods and learns to find ways
of getting her attention.More than anything, he seeks to get any reaction out of her, even if it is

Jimmy mourns his mother throughout the rest of the novel. At first, his feelingsconfuse him because
his mother was not typically nurturing or supportive. He alsomisses his pet, so both absences get

She describes Mandan s migration, their daily life, and the cultural characteristics of Manda, such as
festivals, as well as the pathogens of the society from hundreds of year ago. However, because
Mandan always welcome foreign immigrants and it had succeeded in international commercial status
because of these immigrant traders and explorers who brought businesses to Mandan, they also
brought disease. In 1991 , when they first suffered a smallpox injury, Mandan s life changed. The
Mandan comprised approximately 13 clans after the plague there were seven. This led to the decline
of Mandan. It is resulting in the spread of colonial disease, especially when those diseases such as
smallpox, measles, and pertussis were in the wave of epidemics outbreaks and repeated outbreaks of
toxic diseases. This was one of the main reasons for the fading of Mandan. These colonial diseases
from the outside destroyed Mandan step by step.
Fenn described Mandan through archeology, anthropology, geology, climatology, epidemiology, and
other important findings of Mandan and linked these to review their history. The disease and
motorboat are the main reasons for the decline of Mandan. Fenn bemoans that the result for the
Mandan people is a tragedy. As Fenn said, the Mandan people had their own unique tradition, but that
no longer exists, because it is interspersed with international history of the heat of the world of
international events.

The Stereotypes Of Colonialism And Postcolonialism
Postcolonialism is an academic discipline featuring methods of intellectual discourse that analyze,
explain, and respond to the cultural legacies of colonialism and imperialism, to the human
consequences of controlling a country and establishing settlers for the economic exploitation of the
native people and their land.
According to Edward said, Said s book Orientalism (1978) is considered the foundational work on
which post colonial theory developed. Said, then, could be considered the father of postcolonialism.
His work, including Orientalism, focused on exploring and questioning the artificial boundaries, or the
stereotypical boundaries, that have been drawn between the East and West, specifically as they relate
to the Middle East. In doing this, Said focused specifically on our stereotypes of Middle Easterners,

Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar
Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar The works of Sylvia Plath have always been at least slightly controversial;
most of them have themes of feminism, suicide, or depression. Plath was born in 1932 in Boston,
Massachusetts, and by the age of twelve she was reported to have had an IQ of about 160 (Kelly).
Growing up in an age in which women were expected to be nothing more than conservative
housemaids, Plath stood defiant against the views of society, choosing to expose any misogynistic
prejudices or hateful prospects against mental illness through her writings (Allen).
Perhaps the most famous work of Sylvia Plath s is The Bell Jar a book that follows the mental
deterioration of a nineteen year old girl named Esther through the narration of Esther herself.
Although Sylvia Plath hated life in general and committed suicide at the age of 32 after her husband
left her, the myriad autobiographical elements, metaphors, and motifs that appear throughout her
works produce a beautifully vivid representation of people, the world, and life itself ( Sylvia Plath ).

everything that appears to prevent her from achieving things she wants (Huf). As Esther s mental state

The Emergence Of Islam During The Umayyad Caliphate
The early centuries following the emergence of Islam were shrouded with numerous internal conflicts
and Fitnas, particularly during the Umayyad Caliphate. With the expansion of Islam so successful,
why would there be such strife among the Muslims? Possible answers lie with divisions among groups
on who should rule, how he should rule and how religious doctrine was to be upheld by the amir al
muminin or commander of the faithful. These were prominent among all other problems of the period.
The seventh and eighth centuries contain evidence demonstrating that the Muslims fought each other
due to matters of revenge, caliphate succession and opposition to policy; they used tribal ethics,
religious association to the prophet Muhammad and Quranic doctrine to justify such actions. The first
Fitna or civil war among Muslims may have been the Battle of Camel in 656 in which Caliph Ali b.
Abi Talib and his supports from Kufa faced off against Al Zubayr b. Awwam, the prophet s widow
Aisha and Talha b. Ubayd Allah near Basra. The latter sought to eliminate the threat of Ali to the
continuation of Quraysh rule after Uthman s assassination. While this dissenting coalition in favor of
Al Zubayr was reactionary to Ali s rule after Uthman s death, it was motivated by the desire of the
Quraysh to retain political control rather than avenge the late Caliph s murder. The notion of revenge
was left to the governor of Syria, Mu awiya. He was a member of the Umayyad clan who adopted the

  • 2. Analysis Of The Right Stuff By Tom Wolfe The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe chronicles the beginning of the United States space program and the Space Race against the Soviets through the eyes of America s first astronauts and those around them in the style of new journalism. The Right Stuff may seem like an odd title for a book about astronauts and space exploration, as it appears to have nothing to do with either, but it is a theme that is explored throughout the book. Put simply, the right stuff is a quality that a test pilot or astronaut possessed that enabled them to be the best. It was not typical bravery, a person either had it or they didn t, and its possessors seemed to be above the rules. The right stuff was not only classic bravery as one would imagine, but bravery was certainly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even so, there wasn t a specific test to prove if one had it or didn t have it. Instead, it was a continuous pyramid of tests that one must conquer, and those who failed to prove themselves at any level of the pyramid certainly did not have the right stuff. Wolfe notes that, ...the idea was to prove at every foot of the way up that pyramid that you were one of the elected and anointed ones who had the right stuff and could move higher and higher and even...that you might be able to join that special few at the very top..., the very Brotherhood of the Right Stuff itself. Every level in the pyramid presented more challenging demands where, ...the world was once again divided into those men who had the right stuff to continue the climb and those who had to be left behind in the most obvious way. Those who failed to prove themselves and were left behind most definitely did not have the right stuff and were left to pursue a career in a less demanding wing of flight testing where the concept of the right stuff did not pertain. In the early levels of the pyramid some people were left behind because they couldn t take the coursework or were unable to complete a phase in their training such as carrier landings Others were left behind because they were deemed medically unfit to take on the task of becoming a test pilot, something that was beyond their control but was sometimes still seen as a failure. In the higher and more dangerous levels of the pyramid some were left behind only because they were no longer alive to continue climbing the pyramid. When faced with this reality some men would voluntarily decide to no longer continue climbing the pyramid, although this meant sacrificing the notion of ever having the right ... • 4. The Powers Of The Mediterranean Powers of the Mediterranean In the 3rd century B.C.E. there were two great powers in the area surrounding the Western part of the Mediterranean Sea, The African/Spanish Empire of Carthage and the Italian Empire of Rome. Both empires were rapidly expanding their territory while ultimately avoiding each other. Carthage had conquests in South West Europe in modern day Spain, while the Romans were working their way East into Macedonia. Rome and Carthage were both major powers controlling what to them was the entire world. These two powers are very similar and very different, but after a conflict between them started only one would make it out alive. Before the wars began, in the 9th century B.C.E. a Phoenician Queen known most commonly by Dido, founded a city in Northern Africa, in modern day Tunisia, Known as Kart hadasht or translating to new city . The Greeks called this city Karchedon which the Romans adapted to Carthago, or Carthage. (Mark 2011) Before Rome, Carthage the center of trade through out the Mediterranean. Upon the fall of the Phoenician city of Tyre after the conquests of Alexander the Great, Tyrains fled to the city of Carthage. Most of these refugees were extremely wealthy, and upon their settlement at Carthage, they expanded Carthage s trade substantially. Carthage was experienced with naval warfare and fought their battles with mercenaries, soldiers paid to fight. (Rodriguez n.d.) Constitutional Amendments, Bangladesh CONSTITUTION The fundamental law, written or unwritten, that establishes the character of a government by defining the basic principles to which a society must conform; by describing the organization of the government and regulation, distribution, and limitations on the functions of different government departments; and by prescribing the extent and manner of the exercise of its sovereign powers. A legislative charter by which a government or group derives its authority to act. The concept of a constitution dates to the city states of ancient Greece. However, amendments during socialist one party and military rule in Bangladesh radically altered the secular and liberal democratic nature of the constitution. THE CONSTITUTION OF THE PEOPLE S REPUBLIC OF BANGLADESH AMENDMENTS CONSEQUENCES The original Constitution of Bangladesh introduced a parliamentary form of government with the President as its constitutional head. It provides a responsible executive, a non sovereign legislature and an independent judiciary with appropriate separation of powers, and checks and balances among them. The supreme law of Bangladesh, the Constitution, confers only limited law making competence on Parliament. Parliament does not possess any intrinsic law making power, which derives from the constitution. The parliament cannot make any law in contravention with the provisions of the constitution. The Constitution embodies the principle of ministerial responsibility, both individual and collective, to the parliament and ultimately to the people, the source of all powers in the republic . Bangladesh started its journey with a parliamentary form of democracy, derailed afterwards from the fundamental aspiration of democratic governance by introducing one party political system with an all powerful head of the state the President . • 6. Film Analysis Of The Movie Inception The film Inception captured the imagination of many spectators as one of the best science fiction and thriller movies to be produced that year. It was produced and directed by Christopher Nolan who also directed The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. Inception is based on the basic inspiration that a single idea in an individual s mind can be either the most valuable asset or the most dangerous weapon. Inception is a science fiction thriller movie. This genre deals with situations and technology that would be classified as scientific, but does not exist in real life. Inception connects with this because of the technology they used to enter the dreams. Although it was never explained, the machine seems to pump somnacin into the body. Somnacin is a drug utilized to initiate dream sharing and lucid dreaming. The movie is also classified as a thriller because of the exciting plot. It has intense chase scenes, gun fire, explosions, and fight scenes all within the dream state. The expectation for the movie based on the trailer would be constant action. It seems that the main character is away from his family and is trying to get home, but the only way he can is to do one last job. In the trailer the statement your mind is the scene of the crime is shown, this indicates that most of the content will be in the dreams of the subject. Inception is about as many as four levels of dreams within dreams, and dreams that eclipse reality. There seem to be two themes discussed in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Argumentative Essay On Self Reliance Everyone in life has at least one person who has strongly influenced them in one way or another, but what if that influence ended up being hurtful? In the essay Self Reliance by Ralph Emerson, Emerson gives his advice on how to live independently. Emerson says self reliance is to trust oneself and believe in oneself. He states that this is important because being self reliant leads to a successful path in life. By having individual ideas one will end up doing something she or he wants to do in life which causes success for that individual. He discusses how the only person one needs to listen to in life is oneself and that no other person should influence one s life. I believe there are people in this world that can have a negative influence on one s life, but also people that can have a positive influence. For example, in basketball my positive influences (parents, teammates, and coaches) help me to succeed in a team sport. Emerson begins his article by talking about the importance of self reliance. He defines self reliance as thinking for oneself and not letting anyone else influence one in any way, shape, or form. As a human being this may be one of the most difficult tasks. Emerson explains that being self reliant can be difficult especially for adults because they are too worried about their reputations and how others will look upon them. Emerson also says, Trust thyself (2). Emerson believes that one should go with his or her gut in everything she or he does. Even if what she or he wants to do goes against the thoughts of others she or he still needs to pursue his or her dreams. The last thing Emerson wants people to do is be embarrassed of what others will think of themselves. People need to throw away others thoughts and opinions and follow one s own. Emerson also believes that one can be great through being self reliant. He says, To be great is to be misunderstood (7). This tells one that if others seem to be judging or confused on what one is doing with his or her life, one should ignore the others, and continue to follow what she or he believes. • 8. Bowenian Family Systems Therapy Summary One of the main approaches that can be used with this family is Bowenian s Family Systems Therapy which emphasizes helping family members differentiate from their family of origin and help them to develop healthy relationships with their current family members (Hook, 2014). One of the assumptions of this theory is that multi generational trends or pattern have a great effect on an individual family member s emotions, thinking or behavior, which results in the continuing the same trend. Families do not act autonomously, but they are essentially tied with their emotional behavior. This is known as the multigenerational transmission process (Gilbert, 2006). The primary goal of this therapy is to help family members differentiate from their family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The client had reported these patterns to be considered to be generational curses , which implies that the family does not want to continue in these patterns. These instances can be viewed as traumatic events and negatively impacted the emotional well being of the members in the family. For this approach, the genogram is viewed as an essential intervention for allowing family to recognize intergenerational patterns (Hook, 2015). During session with the family, the genogram could help the family to open up about their sexual abuse and how it was dealt with the past. They can also process their feelings of having to raise children on their own. By identifying these patterns, that family could look for potential solutions or options for breaking or avoiding this risk factor. Since the client reported that sexual abuse is not really expressed in her family, it is assumed that the family members affected by this experience have unresolved issues and unhealthy emotional connections. The family session could be used for the family members to process those emotions and develop new positive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Donald Trump And Hillary Clinton Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are two possible contenders to represent their political parties in the upcoming presidential elections in 2016. After several GOP/Democratic debates, Trump and Clinton have firmly addressed their immigration reform plans, which greatly contrast with one another. Before running for the presidency, Donald Trump was, and still is, a business magnate. His immigration reform focuses on three fundamental principles in order to make America great again. Firstly, Trump believes a nation without a border is simply not a nation, which is a key principle, central to his campaign. Secondly, Trump states that A nation without laws is not a nation. Consequently, he is determined to strictly enforce both old and new laws made during his presidency. Lastly, Trump believes that a nation must first prioritize its citizens, in terms of employment, wages and safety (Trump, 2015). To enforce his first principle, Donald Trump plans to construct a wall along the southern border in between the U.S. and Mexico, which he guarantees the Mexican government will be fully financially responsible for. He strongly believes that the U.S. taxpayers have been directly affected by this situation in terms of increased health care, housing and education costs etc. which are caused by the transfer of crime and poverty that comes with illegal immigration from Mexico (Trump, 2015). • 11. Great Leap Forward Summary 10. Diamond characterizes the Great Leap Forward as the stage in human development when humans became seemingly more modern and more similar, biologically and behaviorally, to the human today. This leap occurred around 50,000 years ago, the signs being standardized tools, preserved jewelry, and the completely modern skeletons of the Cro Magnon. 11. The major human achievements that characterize the Great Leap Forward can be defined by the first ever preserved jewelry and methodized tools made out of stone. Other major human achievements at this time included complex weaponry that could kill from a secure distance, much like the mechanics of the weaponry we have and still use in battle today. The most marvelous as well as most known achievement of the Cro Magnons would have to be their artwork though, due to its wondrous beauty in the eyes of many. 12. It seems that Diamond primarily believed that the extinction of the many mega fauna was entirely the fault of the humans and not at all because of the animals changing habitat. Many do not believe the wall would stop the immigrants from illegally crossing at all. Human migration routes are like rivers: If they hit an obstacle, the flow finds a way around it (Chappell). The treaties between the United States and Mexico that prohibit the blockage of rivers across the border would be roadblocks in President s Trump s plan (Aguilera). Another one would be the Native American reservations along the borders. It would be a waste of time for the government to have the wall built only to have gaps within the wall due to restrictions. Trump would be able to get around these restrictions by convincing Congress to pass a bill that would take the land away from the Native Americans, but that would only start chaos. Most of the land currently without a border fence cannot withstand the construction of a wall because of the geography by which it is surrounded. Due to this, there will be gaps within the wall through which immigrants would be able to enter. The wall is viewed as a ridiculous idea because it realistically will not fulfill the desires President Trump has. The wall will not only cost billions of dollars, but will also not keep out all of the illegal immigrants. It can even keep in the ones that are in the United States today as illegal. The illegals currently in the country would be turned away at the idea of crossing back over the border to see their families after they learn that a more secure border is being put in place (Falkenberg). This has even been tried in the past, but the rst attempt to do so, in 2001 2003, did not succeed. Chancellor Merkel has yet to place a ban, and states that her administration will not be seeking to disband the party. Merkel went further by stating that she did not consider a renewed ban application necessary, even considering their militant aggressive attitude towards the existing order. Success of ban would make NPD the third party blacklisted in view of being unconstitutional in post war Germany. The failure to dislodge the NPD from the political sphere has discouraged any further efforts since. Mitosis is a process of cell division where a single round of replication is followed by separation of sister chromatids to form 2 daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell. On the other hand, during meiosis, a single round of DNA replication is precedes two rounds of cell divisions leading to the formation of haploid gamete from a diploid parent (Figure 1). Figure 1: In meiosis, the DNA replication occurs in S phase followed by two rounds of replication. Homologs are segregated during meiosis I and sisters during meiosis II. Meiosis I is a reductional cell division, where sister chromatids are mono oriented and homologous chromosomes that are pulled to the opposite poles. The proper segregation of homologous chromosome is mainly ensured by meiotic recombination that leads to the formation of a physical link between them (Chiasmata). Meiotic recombination also leads to the exchange of genetic material between the homologous chromosomes, leading to genetic variation. Mired in Newtonian causality, Voltaire (echoing John Locke) believed that action is the effect of which the will is the cause. The cause of the will is the effect of environment. The environment is part of the clockwork universe made and wound by God.7[7] While this theory brings environment into the discussion of development of personality, it makes people into passive receptacles and cogs in machines.8[8] Voltaire s belief in God was partly pragmatic. He recognised the difficulty of maintaining an ethical system without rewards and punishments. The two pieces I have chosen can be found on page 200, figure 6 51, Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian s Villa and on page 434, figure 14 8, Battle of the Bird and Serpent. Not only did I choose these pieces for their beauty, but also because both works have similar yet different subjects, concepts, and formal elements. Both of these images have subject matter that is the same even though they re different. The subjects for the Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian s Villa are animals; centaurs (male and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, the shapes in the background are fuzzier and assumed in piece one where the shapes in piece two are sharper and more defined. Another formal element is texture. The first piece, according to the text, is a floor mosaic which is composed of many colored tesserae that were laid down in irregular, curving lines, which effectively imitated painted brushstrokes. The individual tiles are more apparent when viewed closely. This gives the piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it physically looks bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat surface in which figures and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second piece was drawn with tempera on parchment. This makes the piece look smooth, flat, and two dimensional. The next element is color. The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Both pieces have a low level of saturation. In piece one, the sky is mustard brown with a section of mint green that frames the boulder that the male centaur is holding. The rocky scenery has browns and creams with a dull green and brown center. A bright green patch of pine trees is in the corner that contrasts with the sky and rocks. The colors to the second piece are similar in the sense that it has low saturation. The colors are dull and warm. This piece utilizes reds and oranges, in the serpent, that the first piece does not. Jimmy quickly realizes thathe must bend to his mother s moods and learns to find ways of getting her attention.More than anything, he seeks to get any reaction out of her, even if it is negative.Jimmy s common adolescent attention getting behavior underscores his mother sneglectful parenting style, eliciting readers sympathy for Jimmy. • 35. Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar The works of Sylvia Plath have always been at least slightly controversial; most of them have themes of feminism, suicide, or depression. Plath was born in 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, and by the age of twelve she was reported to have had an IQ of about 160 (Kelly). Growing up in an age in which women were expected to be nothing more than conservative housemaids, Plath stood defiant against the views of society, choosing to expose any misogynistic prejudices or hateful prospects against mental illness through her writings (Allen). Perhaps the most famous work of Sylvia Plath s is The Bell Jar a book that follows the mental deterioration of a nineteen year old girl named Esther through the narration of Esther herself. Although Sylvia Plath hated life in general and committed suicide at the age of 32 after her husband left her, the myriad autobiographical elements, metaphors, and motifs that appear throughout her works produce a beautifully vivid representation of people, the world, and life itself ( Sylvia Plath ). As the story progresses, however, Esther becomes indifferent about life, and she develops bitterness toward everything that appears to prevent her from achieving things she wants (Huf). • 37. The Emergence Of Islam During The Umayyad Caliphate The early centuries following the emergence of Islam were shrouded with numerous internal conflicts and Fitnas, particularly during the Umayyad Caliphate. With the expansion of Islam so successful, why would there be such strife among the Muslims? Possible answers lie with divisions among groups on who should rule, how he should rule and how religious doctrine was to be upheld by the amir al muminin or commander of the faithful. These were prominent among all other problems of the period. The seventh and eighth centuries contain evidence demonstrating that the Muslims fought each other due to matters of revenge, caliphate succession and opposition to policy; they used tribal ethics, religious association to the prophet Muhammad and Quranic doctrine to justify such actions. The first Fitna or civil war among Muslims may have been the Battle of Camel in 656 in which Caliph Ali b. Abi Talib and his supports from Kufa faced off against Al Zubayr b. Awwam, the prophet s widow Aisha and Talha b. Ubayd Allah near Basra. The latter sought to eliminate the threat of Ali to the continuation of Quraysh rule after Uthman s assassination. While this dissenting coalition in favor of Al Zubayr was reactionary to Ali s rule after Uthman s death, it was motivated by the desire of the Quraysh to retain political control rather than avenge the late Caliph s murder. The notion of revenge was left to the governor of Syria, Mu awiya. He was a member of the Umayyad clan who adopted the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
