Proposition to Reface Mount Rushmore
Over the years, America has produced many people worthy of having their faces chiseled into a
large rock for all to see. Although the current Mount Rushmore possesses faces that are very
important and worthy, they are no longer relevant in today's society. The proposition I have for the
re–facing of Mount Rushmore is sure to be relevant and inspiring to Americans for centuries to
come. Edgar Allen Poe was an American poet and short story composer whose writings have
influenced literature for a century and a half. Calvin Coolidge was a strong leader who was
appointed to presidential office in the 1920s. He also had a very awesome last name. Bob Dylan is a
nearly prophetic poet and song writer, the voice of a generation, and an inspiration to many. Jennifer
(Stelter) Schubert is a tenacious woman who has overcame trials and tribulations daunting to any
human and came out on top. I propose that the faces of Edgar Allen Poe, Calvin Coolidge, Bob
Dylan, and Jennifer Schubert be carved into Mount Rushmore for their impact on past and present
American society, leadership qualities, and overall awesomeness. Edgar Allen Poe is credited with
the composition a poem that has been extremely prominent throughout the past century and a half –
"The Raven". But this was not the only work that has stuck with Americans all of these years; Poe
was a man of many talents – and troubles. Edgar Allen Poe was born to two actors whom he never
really got to know. He was separated from his siblings

Folk Tale And Tale Comparison
In our time period, folktales and myths can occur in daily life. They share a relevance in our actions,
our choices, and our feelings. For example, in today's world we are like the greek gods and
goddesses. They are often jealous of one another and fight with each other over foolish things like
today people will fight over foolish things and share some jealousy. Although people may disagree
with tales sharing similarities, tales like "The Apple Of Discord" still connect with our actions,
choices, and feelings in today's world. The Poem "Apple of Discord" by Kate Hovey, is about the
goddess of discord, Eris. Eris is angry at the gods and other goddesses because the exclude her, yet
she is doing the same thing they are. Eventually, she throws

About Rabha Tribe of Assam
VIII. LITERATURE 4.1 ORAL: Like other ethnic tribal groups of the North East India and Assam,
the Rabha tribe also have their own distinct language, literature and culture, which they express
through mythology, folk songs, ballads, proverbs, etc. This community has rich oral literature,
which passes from generation to generation. The Rabha oral literature can be classified into three
major groups– namely (1). Folk songs, (2). Proverbs, riddles, sayings and charms, and (3). Folk–
tales. Folk Songs: The Rabha oral literature is endowed with rich and variegated folk songs. Such
traditional songs are basically found in the subgroups such as Maitory, Rongdani, Kocha, Pati,

Modest Mussorgsky
During the first half of the 19th century, opera was in it's golden age. Composers sought to capture
drama, emotion, and personalities, creating a closer connection with their audience. With this, they
also began to reflect on the concerns of a broad audience; love and loyalty to family and/or nation,
women's desire for independence, struggle for freedom, fear of evil. This want to appeal to the
population sparked the theme of national identity, which came to be known as Nationalism. The
French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars helped spread the concept of a nation as a group of citizens
with a common heritage, rather than as subjects of a ruler. Influence of this idea grew throughout the
19th century. Nationalism unified the people through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Immigrants from Europe, Latin America, Asia, and former African American slaves and their
descendants, brought their own musical traditions from folk to classical. Ethnic divisions were the
distinctions between classical, popular, and folk music. These three categories represented different
attitudes toward notation, composition, and performance. Classical tradition centered on the
composer and the work, and required intricate notation of the score. Popular music was written
down and sold as a commodity, but centered on the performer and the performance, allowing for
leeway in the notated music. Folk music was independent of musical notation, being passed on
through oral tradition. Overall, these three categories often overlapped. Folk tunes were written
down and sold as popular music, arranged for concert performance, or incorporated into classical
pieces; classical works were transcribed and altered for performance in popular venues; and some
popular songs became so well known that they were then passed down orally, like folk

Judy Collins Pros And Cons
"Both Sides Now" was a song written by Joni Mitchell but first recorded by Judy Collins, a folk
singer, in the Album WildfFlowers, in 1967. The version created by Judy Collins was a top–ten hit
on the U.S. singles chart during the fall of 1968. A year later, Joni Mitchell produced the album
Clouds in which "Both sides, now" was included. Again, Mitchell re–recorded the song in a lush,
orchestrated fashion for her 2000 album Both Sides. Notably, the Judy Collins version of the song
reached number 8 on the U.S. pop singles charts by December and number 6 in Canada. "Both Sides
Now" also won a Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance in 1969. Furthermore, it is essential to

Midway through the 2nd verse, Collins uses the conjunction 'but' to indicate another downward–
spiraling verse. She sings "but now it's just another show/ You leave 'em laughin when you go"(17–
18) to point out that the world can take your happiness away and even seem to be your harshest
critic. The rest of the song continues to convey the same message but uses more personal and
realistic tales that continue to rhyme; for example, the 2nd verse illustrates a warm summer night at
a fair in the 1960s while the 1st verse used an abstract approach by mentioning clouds blocking the
light. Similarly, the 3rd verse is more relatable than the 2nd verse and shows a more personal touch
in which the songwriter mentions that she used to express her emotions freely, but was critiqued by
others. The song ends with the

Egil's Saga Essay
The author most likely intended for Egil's Saga to be a historical documentation of Scandinavia, its
culture, and several of its inhabitants. The tale could also be seen as a folk tale, set in a realistic
setting with real people, but the events are skewed and not quite right. The epic accomplishes the
first possible intention through its many characters, the use known locations, and basing the
majority of the tale around two individual families that would have been well known around the
time it was written. However, the tale is not entirely accurate, which strengthens the idea that it was
more of a folk tale. Throughout the epic the audience is introduced to two families, beginning far
before the birth of the man who would attributed to the title. The tale then follows these families
through the events that led up to the main plot of the epic, going so far as to keep detailed track of
who married who and where each character came from. An example of this would be the detailed
description of Olaf on page 168 in chapter 79. This introduction not only ... Show more content on

This was due to most people being unable to read. Only those with enough money could afford to
get an education and learn how to read their own language. This meant that only a small portion of
the population would be able to read Egil's Saga. However, these educated individuals could read
the story aloud in Icelandic to a crowd. With this in mind the story was most likely spread primarily
through word of mouth. This is also shown through the style in which the piece was written.
Egil's Saga is quick paced and exaggerated, like a folk tale version of a family story. This stylistic
choice would keep an audience tuned in to the story and unsure of when to walk away from it. Each
chapter is filled with action and lacks any real downtime. Someone is always up to something that is
at least mildly exciting. This keeps most readers, or audience members, on their

Bob Dylan Synthesis
"For having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition," ("All Nobel
Prizes in Literature"). Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016.
Unprecedentedly, he became the first singer and songwriter who had ever earned the Nobel Prize in
Literature in history. The plausible reasons that Bob was elected mainly reflect in the poetic lyrics
Bob has in his songs and the enormous historical effects lyrics show. Bob Dylan, a rock singer,
songwriter of folk and country music, was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in
Duluth, Minnesota. Later on, he started writing songs about chronicle social issues, such as wars
and civil rights, in college. In 1961, Dylan signed his first recording contract and emerged as one ...

"Lyrically, "Tangled Up in Blue" chronicles the rise and fall of two relationships: between an
unnamed "he" and "she" and between a first–person narrator (also unnamed) and the same "she.""
(Barkhorn). In order to correctly express the emotion of the protagonists in the song, Dylan
basically utilizes all five senses, especially sight, touch, and hearing: "I heard her say over my
shoulder/"We'll meet again someday on the avenue."" (Dylan 24, 25). Dylan uses "dark, sad night"
to connect the color with the emotion. Darkness represents sadness; it shows that "he" feels so upset
that they split up. "Drift down" vividly tells the readers that "he" never finds a long–time job
because he cannot find interests in doing these jobs but thinking about "her". Dylan also makes
images by using disparate phrases. The quote "But I never did like it all that much/And one day the
ax just fell" (Dylan 29, 30). shows tough life for people during the postwar era. By combining five
senses with some specific words and phrases, Dylan transforms ordinary song lyrics into poetry,
thus making him worthy of the Nobel Prize for

Comparison of the Russian Folk Tale “The Wolf and the...
What is common in the tales of different peoples? And how do they differ? I have had many
questions and wanted to find the answers. My research is devoted to analysis and comparison of the
two tales about animals. The first one is the Russian folk tale "The wolf and the goat" and other one
is the English folk tale "The wolf and the three kittens". Comparison began with an introduction to
the history of fairy tales: the definition of the genre, the collection and study of fairy tales, with their
classification. Every person has the recollection of how our grandmother or mother read a lot of
interesting tales. The structure of a fairy tale about the animal includes a small amount of text and
simple plot.
Perhaps only the structure of fairy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator is not simply translate the text but also plays it.
For example, the English fairy tale teaches the reader to distinguish between good and the evil,
empathize and help the weak, and believe in justice. The main heroes of this tale are the wolf from
the evil and the cat from the good. The whole plot of a fairy tale built on a permanent clash between
good and evil. The wolf is very tricky and dangerous. But humor softens the force of evil, which
takes place in English weighty tale. Evil characters constantly ridiculed and often fall into the
absurd, comic situations. This technique enhances the action that leads to the climax and
denouement. Feature of fairy tales is that it is off from the real–time. Strict sequence of events
creates a special fabulous time in which the cat has to overcome a series of tests before they will
find happiness. Usually tale ends with the victory of good. Evil is punished. The wolf in full
receives their just deserts for their actions. In the English fairy tales usually do not have a traditional
beginning and end: "living – were", "and I was there". In the English fairy tale is a tragic
denouement.
Tales from the same plot and similar names are obtained for three reasons. The first reason is the
fact that fairy tales appear in small tribes and then transferred to other countries. But they remain
folk traditions such as the introduction and motivation but adapted to local custom. The second
reason reveals the existence of

Characteristics Of Folk Tales
Part l: Lecher states that several factors account for the difficulty the Grimm's and other nineteenth
century folklorists encountered in collecting and retelling folktales in the authentic voice of the folk.
Three of these are as follows: 1. The purpose of the collectors and retellers, 2. The judgments of the
collectors and retellers as to what constitutes a good story, 3. The value the retellers place on
translating the stories from what is effective in the oral format into what is effective in the written
format (42). I can see why these factors are so important in folk literature, because these stories had
to passes by mouth and those can easily be misunderstood or switched around to make the story
sound different. Also, Lecher states that frequently, these collectors either had preconceived ideas of
which stories represented a culture or were not told all the types of stories that members of the
culture told each other (Okpewho, 1983; Berry, 1991) (42). This is an example of how there would
be issues in telling folk stories. It happens still today, sometime hears a story and goes to tell it again
but changes it just a little bit, then the next person goes to tell the story and changes it again just a
little bit, and so on and so forth. Also, some people may tell stories that are bias to their culture as
said in the quote. Another problem/ misconception of folk literature is that anyone who has tires to
find new stories to retell for young audiences quickly becomes aware

Essay Unit 1 Chapter 1
Long ago, at a small village next to Roc–A–Fella peaks, there lived three young boys. Jermaine,
Nas, and Kendrick. Kendrick was a descendant of the lightning district of the village, Nas was born
and raised in the fire district, and Jermaine was a simple village boy who grew crops and raised
cattle. Ever since the village was established it was divided into four main groups. The fire district,
the lightning district, the village folk, and the All Mighty's. Mostly all lived in peace until one day. It
was December and the day was cold. The wind blew rapidly and incoherently as the village folk
worked on the crops and attend to their many cattle. Then, something started falling from the sky...it

The people of the district are torn. They do not want to leave the village, whereas this is their home.
In recognition of this, Inferno comes to a devilish resolution. His proposition? To overrun the
lighting district and, relocate in their absence, in the only place free of snow. The people are
shocked, but their moral dilemma is short lived when it seems this is their only option. It is decided!
If the snow does not clear up in the next three days, the strong of the district will ambush the
unsuspecting people of the lightning district; using any force necessary to clear the land. When word
spreads to the lightning district the All–Seer for their land, Voltage, declares war on any advances
that are made by the fire district. Forcing cause to no further delay a war as massive as the Battle of
Mt. Olympus. Meanwhile at the bottom of the Throne, the highest mountain on Roc–A–Fella peaks,
halted was Jermaine awaiting the arrival of his accomplices Nas and Kendrick. The three knowing
the struggles they're all in, they have decided to visit the top of the Throne to speak with the gods.
To seek answers on the snow and how to stop it. As they battle mythical creatures of mass
proportion and production, they withstand every test to get to the top. In each battle one of the three

The Fiction of Literature: Folk Tales, Fan Fiction, and...
The Fiction of Literature: Folk Tales, Fan Fiction, and Oral Tradition in the Internet Age In 1951,
JRR Tolkien wrote a letter to his publisher, Milton Waldman, in an attempt to describe his vision for
The Lord of the Rings. After outlining the scope of his many interconnected plots, Tolkien self–
consciously articulated his hopes for his novel's reception: "Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my
crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging
from the large and cosmogonic to the level of romantic fairy–story... The cycles should be linked to
a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and
drama. Absurd." With the benefit of hindsight, we know now that his idea was not 'absurd'. Tolkien
almost presciently describes the place his novels have taken in Western culture. Tolkien's works, in
the words of Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey, "ha[ve] become part of the mental furniture of the
culture... [They are] a story that everybody kn[ows] about, even if they c[a]n't remember ever
reading or hearing any version of it." This cultural awareness of a story is the direct result of the
adaptations and additions Tolkien described. First with official illustrations, and later with an entire
genre of Tolkien–inspired bands and musicians, and even a ballet, many other hands and minds have
added to the majestic whole. In recent years, the Peter Jackson adaptations of The Lord of the Rings,

Indian Folk Tales and Religious Performances
So the Bhakti movement leads the religious performances while secular performances are often
based on folk idioms and beliefs. The religious performances are often very polished performances
because of the religious subject matter and it needs much attention in the performance while on the
other hand the secular performance contains some dialogues in the form of double layered meaning
and a little bit of vulgarity on stage by nata or vidushika. In the matter of adopting the dramatic
techniques, religious performances adopt most of the dramatic techniques from Sanskrit theatre
while on the contrary secular performances mixe the elements of Sanskrit theatre with some
regional elements like dance, music, regional dialects, idioms, etc.
Mythology is a part of living culture of India, especially of rural India. Indian folk theatre is
essential mythological in the matter of the selection of characters, themes, narrative parts, etc.
Characters from myths, epics, and legends are always presented on the stage and they present a
lively reality on the stage. Sanskrit theatre also uses myth and mythological narratives for the
dramatic performance as in folk theatre. But there is difference Sanskrit theatre promotes the myth

On the contrary folk theatre promotes local myths and legends on stage which are already familiar
to the audience. The reason for the selection of such stories is

Symbols in the Fairy Tales and Folk Tales
Certain psychologist have hypothesized that fairytales represent the most primitive way the mind
operates, and within certain folktales, the true message is possible hidden beneath symbols. One
folktale in particular, Little Red Riding Hood, is full of symbols with possible deeper meanings. For
example some people have speculated that the red hood that Little Red Riding Hood wears is a
symbol of the girls sexuality and the "little" in her nickname places an emphasis on her budding
nature. That is to say the young girl is in the beginning stages of becoming a woman and doesn't
possess much knowledge on the subject of sex. Keeping with this same theme, it can further be
hypothesized that the wolf represents the foreign idea of sex, which the young girl finds both
unsettling and alluring. By telling the wolf the directions to her grandmother's house, Little Red
Riding Hood is evading having to confront the uncomfortable feeling created by the wolf's presence.
Instead of dealing with him, Little Red Riding Hood redirects him to her grandmother who is
already a woman and is therefore more mature and capable of dealing with the wolf and what he
represents (Bettelheim 1). Additionally, the winding path with the flowers that Little Red Riding
Hood picks represents temptation and the contrasting direct path to Grandmother's house represents
virtue. Finally, the act of the wolf eating the little girl is a symbol for the loss of her innocence due
to the fact that the only reason the

The Consequences Of Folk Tales
Red Riding Hood, Henny Penny, La Llorona, and Rumpelstiltskin, are all folk tales written to
demonstrate how our decisions, specifically the bad ones we make, could ultimately result in our
demise. Although it may seem like a rather gruesome approach to teaching a simple life lesson, it
has proved to be one of the most effective and influential methods for centuries. These folk tales
stress the importance of proper decision making; if the wrong one is made, the consequences could
be fatal. Throughout history, folk tales have evolved to fit the desires and necessities of its audience.
These stories have been edited and revised to assimilate to the cultural views and values of the
people who are sharing them at the time. Due to the fact that culture is continually progressing and
shifting its identity, many folk tales now have quite a collection of alternate endings. As stated in the
introduction all these stories all have a lesson behind them. All of them being the of outcome of
death if you make the wrong decision. In Red Riding Hood the main character gets fooled by the
wolf who impersonates her grandmother, the wolf then proceeds to eat her in one big gulp after
being tricked to get near the wolf in disguise. In Henny Penny the hen believes that the sky is falling
after an acorn falls on her head. She tells a lot of her friends that the sky is falling and they believe
her. They then meet a fox who lies to them and eventually eats all of them. In La Llorona she killed
her kids over a jealous rage in spite of her children because of her husband, which was a terrible
decision. In turn, she died by killing herself due to regret of such an irrational decision. Lastly in
Rumpelstiltskin he challenged a woman that if she guessed his name correctly in 3 days she could
keep her child, unfortunately he got a bit too cocky and started to him a tune to a song which gave
away his name in it. Which in turn got him killed because as the woman put the puzzle pieces
together, she figured out his name, which was Rumpelstiltskin. He ended up getting mad and
stomped his legs on the ground and ripped himself into two pieces.
All of these folk tales are still relevant today and have withstood the test of time because

Essay on Bob Dylan
Regarding significant musical movements in history, more specifically the twenty first century, few
were more important than the folk revolution that took shape in the mid–nineteen hundreds. One of
the leaders of this revolution was Robert Allen Zimmerman, known by his popular assumed name,
Bob Dylan. Born in 1941 in Minnesota, Dylan grew up the grandchild of Jewish–Russian
immigrants and had a surprisingly unexceptional childhood. His interest in music became evident in
his high school years when he taught himself basic piano and guitar. From these rudimentary skills
Dylan would build his knowledge and experience in music to his present status as a forefather of
folk music in the rock era.
Accordingly, a song from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An eighteen year old
Dylan left his hometown of Hibbing in the fall of 1959 for college at the
University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis. This would be his first taste of the big city and the life that awaited him.
The sight and sounds of the big city opened many new vistas for the young Dylan and he took
advantage of his situation by studying the roots of contemporary rock. He began to listen to the
works of folk pioneers like
Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, and Woody Guthrie. At the same time
Dylan was beginning to perform solo at local Minneapolis night spots such as the Ten O'Clock
Scholar cafe and the St. Paul's Purple
Onion Pizza Parlor.
During this time Dylan was honing his guitar skills and harmonica work and developing his famous
nasal voice which would become his trademark. Halfway through his college career Dylan decided
it was time for a move. He packed up and moved to New York City with two main motivations. His
primary motivation was to become part of the Greenwich
Village folk–music scene which was burgeoning in the city.
His second reason for moving was to meet his idle, Woodie Guthrie, who was in a hospital in New
Jersey with a rare hereditary disease.
Dylan would succeed on both counts. Not only did he meet Guthrie but he became a fixture at his
bedside. As well, Bob Dylan was now a recognizable name among the folk clubs and coffee houses

Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folk Tale Essay
Vladimir Propp presents an excellent argument in his "Morphology of the Folktale." In testing his
hypothesis he compares the themes of about 100 tales and comes out with a formula, ultimately
coming to the conclusion that there is really only one fairy tale in its structure. He takes "a
description of the tale according to its component parts and [compares] the relationship of these
components to each other and to the whole" (Tatar 382). There is a significant amount of repeating
functions in these classic stories. Propp defines the function "as an act of a character, defined from
the point of view of its significance for the course of the action." (Tatar 383).
Functions are stable elements in the story, they never change. "The ... Show more content on

"[W]hen you're out in the woods, walk properly and don't stray from the path. Otherwise you'll fall
and break the glass, and then there'll be nothing for Grandmother" (Tatar 14). The second function,
interdiction is addressed. This function is left out of "The Story of Grandmother" and "Little Red
Riding Hood." When Little Red Cap stops as she sees the wolf, she is disobeying her mother
because she is not walking properly, interdiction is violated. All of the stories include running into
the wolf in the woods this being the fourth function. This formula is plain to see so far. If there was
a number assigned to each of the actions "The Story of Grandmother" and "Little Red Riding Hood"
follow an A then D formula skipping functions B and C. Whereas "Little Red Cap" has followed the
formula exactly in order, A, B, C, then D.
In each of the fairy tales the wolf approaches the young girl in the woods and gets information about
where she is going and tries to trick her. In further proving Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale",
the wolf tries to trick Little Red Riding Hood in different ways in the stories. One story she takes a
path of needles and the wolf takes a path of pins, knowing that Little Red Riding Hood would stop
to pick the needles up. This is how he tricks her. In "Little Red Cap" and in "Little Red Riding
Hood" the girl tells

Essay on 1960's Counter Culture and its Saga
1960's Counter Culture and its Saga
After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, America's hope for Camelot fades and life
began to look a little more complicated. Congress deemed President Lyndon Johnson's "Great
Society" implausible as Johnson backed the country into a war that was not ours. Then, while many
Americans began to realize that the War in Vietnam could not be won, there was major public outcry
about ending our involvement in a war for the first time in the country's history. The liberals in the
country failed to reach the working class, and President Richard Nixon, a conservative, ascended to

As the early '60s became the late '60s, youths who had grown into the counter cultural movement,
took the folk musical feeling of The Times They Are A–Changin' (Bob Dylan) and began to apply it
to their actions. Instead of wishing that the government would solve problems, the mostly–college
age students took matters into their own hands. Complaints turned into protests and protests turned
into marches. Society's view of its government would never be the same.
As students and other young adults started expressing their opinions on the Vietnam War, Civil
Rights, America's drug policy, and other assorted issues of relevance to American young adults,
students used folk music to guide their views. Also, folk musicians used the feelings of the youth
culture to help shape their music to form an accelerated cycle. However, as the counter cultural
movement began to grow not in number but in visibility and media accessibility, the outspoken
Americans began to see little response from a government that paid them no heed. So, the tone of
the language started to change. Coupled with, but not necessarily as a result of, the rise of rock and
roll to replace folk music in popularity, the vocal protests took on harsher, more severe words.
Artists like Credence Clearwater Revival and Barry McGuire, who spoke of an Eve of Destruction

Skinwalker Essay : The Folk Tale Of Skinwalkers
The Folk tale Of Skinwalkers I'm gonna tell you story that happen to me in the summer of 2015.But
first I gotta tell you how I got in that in the mess.My story starts off on the last day of school and I
only had lunch and one more period to get out of there and then it was finally summer time.I went to
the table where my friends always hang out. My friend Thomas, who was tall and had crusty nappy
hair.Is like the jokester in the group. He "is" always making jokes about moms and how he gets all
the girls. Since it is the last day of school I thought I'll help him out and show him he ain't
nothing. So I went to go grab my friend Daisy and told her to go ask him out and see what he would
do (Thomas always had a crush on her since fourth grade). So when she approached him I hid
behind a corner to see what would happen.. Thomas' response was priceless.his face was so red it
was like magma,Thomas couldn't even respond to the question.and his face expression was like a
goldfish gasping for air. I couldn't hold my laughter in and I burst out laughing and Thomas of
course heard me and he started raising his voice. He gave a little shove on the chest and said. "What
the hell is your problem, Sam?" I responded "You said how you get all the girls so I wanted to see
for myself and I was right you have no game, and if you ever push me again over a prank I'll knock
you". I could see on his face that he wanted to punch me but he didn't have the balls to do it, so I
wasn't nervous.I gave

Folk Tale Of Clayton's Wife
I believe he got either his wife or possibly child a gift. (I was right, it was for his wife). I believe
that this gift is a kind of thank you gift to his wife for supporting him through the bad times as well
as good times. He is giving her a nice gift because he just got a better paying job so he can afford
things like $90 paper weights. He feels that she would truly love it, thats why he buys it for her.
A cute way that the main character, Clayton's wife Sharon encouraged Clayton and cheered him on
the day before he had left from Boston. This holds importance to me because it shows that she
believes in Clayton and his endeavors.
An interesting reference to the folktale of Mrs. O'leary's cow beggining a Chicago fire. This was a

The Similarities And Differences Of Fairy Folk Tales
Comparative Analysis Essay
Fairy Folk Tales are the most popular types of literature. The tale is an orally transmitted tradition
by generations through the time; some events are changed to fit reality and society. Folk fairy tales
deal with the dualism of the good and the evil. They are basing on a conflict between the good and
the evil forces. The conclusion comes from aspirations of the human desire to achieve the justices.
There are no known authors and sources for ancient's literature. We have many versions of the story;
they are credited by many authors later. Each tale is very like some other culture's tale. Each culture
has own tales, but all the tales are similarities and differences in some points. This essay will
compare between two fairy tales, "Cinderella" and "In the Land of Small Dragon". The tale of
Cinderella is a French tale. It is credited by Charles Perrault; it is published in 1697. The in the Land
of Small Dragon is a Vietnamese folktale; it is told by Dang Manh Kha in 1979.
The tale works to improve the man's image, as a fair and a wise father; or a prince who is the savior
of hopeless girl. The hopeless girl expresses a kind and a simple girl; otherwise, the woman mirrors
a wicked, jealous, and ugly character. That is clear in these two–fairy tales. While Cinderella and
Tam were little kids, they lost their mothers. At this point, each of them her suffering and the painful
journey begins. Cinderella lives in her father's house with a stepmother and

Analysis Of Blowin In The Wind
Dylan's early music, written as part of this folk revival, reflects this individualist style of political
folk songs, but the degree and subject of political conviction seems to be less important to him than
the expression of emotion, and a certain identification of himself as being political. This is readily
apparent in his work from the 1963 album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan". Two of his great early
political forays, "Blowin in the Wind" and "Masters of War", play in quite nicely with the notion
that this generation of folk artists were more abstract, asking less rational, or rhetorical, questions,
and expressing an anger with the world, but not offering much in the way of action. The second
verse of "Blowin in the Wind" expresses an anger with society's willingness to sit idly by in the face
of injustices, but due to its vague language, this anger is not directed at any particular instance of
injustice: "How many years can some people exist/Before they're allowed to be free/Yes, 'n' how
many times can a man turn his head/And pretend that he just doesn't see/The answer, my friend, is
blowin' in the wind/The answer is blowin' in the wind." Moreover, the refrain is also incredibly
ambiguous, and like much of the ephemeral political music of the time, doesn't offer a concrete
solution to the problem. "Masters of War" offers a scathing indictment of the arms build–up of the
Cold War. Much of the song calls for the death of the war profiteers, and offers a grim image in

Monkey Is A Classic 18th Century Chinese Folk Tale
Screenplays are meant to inspire the imagination and display a prevalent theme in an interactive and
approachable manner. Monkey is a classic 16th century Chinese folk tale novel that mixes allegory,
history, and satire into a chaotic but however meaningful adventure. As a combination of being a
picaresque novel and a fold tale epic, magical realism is evident and plays a big role in the story.
The allegorical nature of the characters and the anti–bureaucratic satire makes the novel more
alluring and thus has made the story more enduring and popular. The vivid imagery and descriptions
makes the story come alive as Hsuan Tsang, Tripitaka, ventures in his arduous travels to find the

A pine–tree? Did you think I taught you in order that you might show off in front of other people"
(Wu 27)? The novel serves as a dazzling combination of slapstick comedy, spiritual wisdom, and
nonsense with profundity. Particularly interesting is the metamorphosis of the Monkey or the
symbolism of the Stone Monkey. This character change is noteworthy and would be a focal aspect
of the screenplay. In the end, accomplishing the mission of reaching the scrolls back to China,
Tripitaka and his three disciples get escorted to heaven by the eight Vajraparis. They all get
promoted by Buddha himself as Tripitaka is now "Buddha of Precocious Merit," Monkey is made to
"Buddha Victorious in Strife," and Pigsy is the "Cleanser of Altars." In the beginning the Monkey is
carved out of stone symbolizing his lack of being apprehensive and belittling fear. Because of how
he was brought to existence his careless and reckless nature was brought about by how he was born
with no family, especially parents. Due to his recklessness and misbehavior in Heaven, Monkey had
to be trapped under the Mountain of five elements. This is particularly interesting as this entrapment
serves as symbolism of how Buddha is superior to man, and the need for the quest to enlightenment.
However, a distinct change was evident as mentioned, "But fortunately, when the time of your
retribution was ended, you turned your heart to the Great faith and your endeavor to the

Literary Folk Tales: The Origin Of The Literary Fairy Tales
In this section I will shortly outline the origin of the literary fairy tale and its features as a genre. I
will then discuss how, despite heavy feminist criticism, the genre gained popularity among late
twentieth–century feminist writers.
The genre of fairy tales has its roots in folklore and in oral tradition. Jack Zipes remarks that fairy
tales and folk tales are today generally confused with one another and that: He also maintains that
"fairy tales have been in existence as oral folk tales for thousands of years and first became what we
call literary fairy tales toward the end of the seventeenth century [emphasis in the original]." For
Carter, while folklore emerges from oral "unofficial" culture, the fairy tale is the product of a
literary "official" culture. Whereas folklore results in "stories without known originators that can be
made and remade again and again by every person who tells them," literary fairy tales "transformed
an oral tradition into texts that become middle–class ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, female characters are often represented as weak, submissive and helpless figures who can
only accomplish their goals with the help of a male hero. For example, the heroine of "The Sleeping
Beauty" is helpless in her sleep but is then saved by the prince attracted by her beauty. Active
female heroines are quite rare and, when present, they usually appear for a brief moment; they are
usually elderly female figures endowed with wisdom or special abilities that assist the young
heroine in her path. In Karen E. Rowe's words, This is evident, for example, in the character of the
Fairy Godmother in Cinderella's story. Other active female characters are powerful and ambitious,
and they are portrayed as wicked and evil and they are often ugly; jealous of the heroine's beauty,
they usually try to prevent her from achieving happiness and often end up killed or

Summary Of ' An American Folk Tale ' By Americo Paredes
With His Pistol in His Hand by Americo Paredes is an American folk tale about taking place in 1901
along the Texas Mexico border. Paredes tells the story of Gregorio Cortez a Mexican farmer living
on the south Texas Border who was made a hero by his people. The second novel is that of Chester
Himes ' If He Hollers Let Him Go. Both stories deal with the issues of violence and racism,
although in very different ways. Based on both works, I believe that Bob Jones' figure leaves a more
lasting and long–term consequence of racism. Chester Himes' novel about Bob Jones has somewhat
of an autobiographical touch to it. It is more persuasive in the way that, he and Bob have a lot in
common. Even though Paredes' character focuses on a real character he is made into a fictional,
whereas Bob Jones may or may not be representative of some of the author 's actual experiences
were, leaven the reader or audience with a longer lasting impression of the hardship during those
times.
Gregorio Cortez was an unknown man until 1901.He was considered an outlaw but was also a
likeable young man according to others. Cortez had never been in trouble with the law. Cortez was
one of three sons, and he lived on a farm with his parents. Cortez only occasionally had some
disputes with American farmers. Cortez tried to stay out of any kind of trouble but one day, Cortez
received a visit from Sheriff Morris. Sheriff Morris, a white American was searching for horse
thieves. There had been rumors that

Dear Mr. President by Pink Essay
Throughout the 2000s most mainstream music that was heard on the radio was pop, rap, and/or
R&B with the subject of the songs being of common thoughts nothing to make a stir about. One
artist that developed during this time was Pink counteracting some notions about war, gay rights,
and the general state of America with her song "Dear Mr. President". I believe that "Dear Mr.
President" should be included in MUSC2019 because this song brings together pop and folk
influences while using different techniques such as repetition, metaphors and dynamics to enhance
the effect of the song has on the audience.
The verse starts with an acoustic guitar using a walking tempo and melancholy tone. "Dear Mr.
President, Come take a walk with me." The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here she comes down a level from the previous verse reminding herself that to get her point across
she need stay compose and returns to the original slow rhythm. In this verse she uses repetition to
emphasize the power of the title "lonely boy". Continuing with "How can you say no child is left
behind?" Referring to Bush's No Child Left Behind Act implemented in an attempt to recuse
Americas education system.
In the fourth verse the guitar grows louder along with the harder questions being asked. "What kind
of father would take his own daughter's rights away? And what kind of father might hate his own
daughter if she were gay? I can only imagine what the First Lady has to say." The verse addresses
Bush's position on abortion and gay rights linking these issues to his wife, all of which could have
an effect on her being a women herself.
This verse is the peak of the song signalled by the rise in instrumentals and angry vocals.
Throughout this 12 line verse "hard work" is repeated 9 times. Looking at the lyrics there seems to
be a shift here from the main political focus we saw before to a more general message about the
adversities that people in America face. The anger present dissipates quickly as the guitar slows the
mood again closing the song in the same melancholy tone it began with.
This song comes after 9/11 a time where a lot of songs expressed anger with the government. I
believe though that Pink's song is a little different

Analysis Of The Poem ' Riptide ' By Vance Joy
Riptide, by Vance Joy, is filled with metaphors, which tell the tale of someone they love running
towards danger. Vance Joy writes indie folk music, a mix between traditional folk, country, and rock
music. This song can be used as entertainment and as human expression. The reason I find this song
comfortable is due to the memories and feelings that I associate to the song. This piece is
comfortable to me by reminding me of a more uncomfortable and nervous time in my life. I spent a
semester in Denmark going to an immersion school. I remember the feeling of being in a new
culture, being very confused, and very far outside my comfort zone. I think of riding on trains and
watching everything fly by because that was what I was doing while listening to this song. Vance
Joy was born in 1987, and raised in Melbourne, Australia as James Keough. He found his stage
name in a book by a famous Australian author, Peter Carey. Before his career in music, Vance Joy
played Football in the Victorian Football League, and won an award for best first player in 2008. He
attended Melbourne's Monash University and received a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws
degree. Since then, he has released an EP in 2013, and a year later debuted his first album. Riptide
was the result of Vance Joy's stream of conscious. He started writing the song in 2008 but didn't
complete more than two lines. Four years later, he picked up where he left off, and the chords and
lyrics came to him easily. This

Deception In The Mayan Folk Tale
Everybody has different motives for his or her actions; however, their intentions are often unclear to
others. The cultural importance of folktales is typically to teach readers a lesson as characters are
taken through various plotlines; in these diverse stories, readers are able to gain an insight on the
characters, as well. The African (Nupe) folktale The Crocodile and the Hunter, African (Ghana)
folktale A Story, A Story, and Mayan folktale The Rabbit and the Coyote are all excellent examples
of stories that demonstrate these purposes. Characters in all three of these stories come face to face
with deception, and it's up to the readers to decide on what the tricksters' true intentions are. People
can be deceptive without being evil; they might be doing what they're doing for self gain, for a good
cause, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In A Story, A Story, Anansi the spider uses deception to complete his given tasks in order to obtain

to wonder if Python was really longer than the palm branch, prompting Python to lie tied to the
branch in an attempt to assert his great length. Accordingly, Anansi took his captive to the sky god,
since capturing Python was one of the four requirements to obtain the sky god's stories after all. It's
valid to say that Anansi used deception throughout this folktale for a good cause, because he
ultimately wanted to buy the sky god's stories to share them with everybody. When all is said and
done, there really were no stories in the world before Anansi's heroic acts, so it's hard to say that
what Anansi did was evil, even if he deceived other

Essay Comparing The Grimm Fairy Tales And Cajun Folk Tales
Both the Grimm fairy tales and Cajun folktales frequently utilize heroines in their stories instead of
heroes. Female protagonists vary from symbols of purity to tricksters between these two types of
tales. It can be seen that levels of agency are also varied.
In the Grimm fairy tales, the heroine is always described as being beautiful and pious. Despite her
devotion to God, she must overcome a series of challenges in order to prove her piety. For example:
in The Girl Without Hands by The Brothers Grimm, the protagonist is very religious, but the devil
comes to take her and eventually her father must cut off her hands. She sticks to her religion and
prays for help, but later the devil comes after her again and gets her exiled. Despite both these
challenges she proves her devotion to God and her hands grow back. In many of these tales, the
women are similarly tested by a devilish force but must persevere and prove their virtue ... Show

They are shown to have more agency than is typically given to female protagonists. For example: in
Marie Jolie, she actively chooses not to get married for most of her life and when she does she
chooses to leave him when she finds out that he's the devil. Later in life, she decides not to remarry
again. The female protagonists are also not shown to be religious, in fact, they can be the opposite.
This is shown in The Barefoot woman, where the heroine is actually the devil's wife. These
characters do not prove to do things for the good of others. In Marie Jolie she only looks out for
herself and what she wants, ignoring her mother's request to choose a husband. In The Barefoot
Woman, she actively breaks up a loving couple in order to acquire a pair of shoes for herself.
Another strong difference is that these women are not shown to be quite as naive. In The Barefoot
Woman, she deceives her husband, the devil, and is also able to trick the newlywed couple into
breaking

A Comparison Of Tam Lin And Tam Lin
The Scottish folk ballad "Tam Lin" is a ballad that has inspired quite a few retellings and
reinterpretations by contemporary writers and artists. Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones and
Tam Lin by Pamela Dean are two such retellings in which Jones and Dean have masterfully brought
the events and characters of the traditional ballad into the modern world. Despite the fact that both
novels have drawn from the same source, they have a number of distinct differences, especially
when it comes to the relationship between their Janet and Tam Lin characters (Polly Whittacker and
Tom Lynn in Fire and Hemlock, and Janet Carter and Thomas Lane in Tam Lin), and the balance of
power between the two throughout the narrative. While Jones' novel is very much centered around
the idea of "Tam Lin" being one of the rare few folk ballads or tales with a female hero and is
structured as such to give Polly a position of power and equality in the relationship by the end, Dean
seems to approach her retelling of the ballad from a different direction, leading into the question of
whether Janet really is as empowered by her role as the hero as it may seem at first. In both novels,
the first meeting between the Janet and Tam Lin characters sets a strong base for their initial
relationship, especially regarding the power dynamics within that relationship. In the ballad of Tam
Lin itself, Tam Lin asks Janet why she has entered his woods and picked a rose without his
permission, to which she replies

Fairy Tales And Folk Stories
For centuries fairy tales and folk stories have been created and told to entertain audiences and
explain the world. The stories hold clear messages for their readers, but they also send more subtle
messages with their details. Fairy tales are especially targeted, though not exclusively, at children
because they are passed on by parents each night before bed. But some of the stories that have been
told for a long time across many different cultures have affected the perspectives of people more
than they realize. One of the most well–known examples of a fairy tale that has been influential in
American culture is the classic tale of Cinderella. Though the details of the tale can vary with
different authors and cultures, aspects of it have taken on a certain significance in modern American
culture in multiple ways and the story keeps changing as society progresses. Cinderella now serves
as a reference point in American culture that contains societal messages about gender roles, beauty,
and femininity that people have incorporated into their developing worldview. In many ways, fairy
tales influence how people see the world or how they used to see it when the story was created. Leo
Tolstoy argued in his work "What is Art?" that "The majority has always understood, and still
understands, what we also recognize as being the very best of art...folk legends, fairy tales and folk
songs are understood by all" (266). The universiality of the stories stem from the relatable stories in

Janis Siegel, who has won nine Grammy's and has been nominated for another seventeen Grammy's
is most famous for her diverse musical talent. Janis Siegel was born on July 23rd, 1952 in Brooklyn,
New York. She began learning about music at an early age and she began singing with a trio girl
group at the age of twelve. The group was called The Young Generation. By the time she had
graduated high school, she and her band had already released two singles both produced by Richard
Perry. Janis Siegel says, "At that time, I was exclusively listening to pop and folk music. When
Motown became popular, I fell head over heels for it" [ ]. In high school and college though, she
said John Coltrane was her musical idol for jazz. After the band The Young Generation had
graduated high school, they transitioned to becoming an acoustic folk type of band. They then
renamed themselves as Laurel Sanyon. Then as Janis Siegel attended college for a couple of years,
she studied nursing. But she quit and decided to keep all her attention on the band Laurel Sanyon. At

Romanians will go to the utmost extreme of providing extravagant food, entertainment, and
ceremonies. Before the wedding, the groom will visit the house of the bride to bring her to the place
where the wedding will be held. All of the many people involved in the wedding then proceed in
their cars to the wedding. Typically, they will drive leisurely and will honk at pedestrians to cheer
for the couple. Once the procession reaches the place of the wedding, which will usually be an
Orthodox church, the priest will lead the people into the main auditorium for the ceremony. The
ceremony itself, which is comprised of the priest blessing the couple, reading from the Bible, and
singing, could take up to three hours. After the ceremony, the couple drinks from the same glass of
wine and eat the same piece of bread to symbolize unity. After the couple is unified, they proceed to

the bride and groom normally take their guests to a restaurant of some sort to have refreshments and

Music, Music And Music
There is no better way to measure how far society has evolved, but through music. It has been a
vessel used to evince key emotions when words do not seem to be enough. The dulcet hum of the
violin or even the sharp notes from an electric guitar are more than enough to express those
intangible, yet impressionable feelings that cannot be fully appreciated through words. However,
combine words and music together and the composer has a tool that can awaken a thousand souls all
at once.
Over the millenniums, music has had a profound ability to capture revolutionary moments, condemn
injustice, and raise hope for change in the future. In particular, music and singing have played an
integral role in inspiring, mobilizing, and giving voice to civil rights movements around the world.
''The freedom songs are playing an active and vital role in our struggle, ' ' said Martin Luther King,
Jr, during the Albany Movement. ''They give the people new courage and a sense of unity. I think
they keep alive a faith, a radiant hope, in the future, particularly in our most trying hours '." Or as
Folk Singer Phil Ochs once said, "one good song with a message is capable of bringing across a
point more deeply to more people than a thousand rallies."
However, fast track to the modern era, and more infrequent are the antiwar sentiments of artists like
Bob Dylan of the USA, or the government–challenging and anti–apartheid lyrics of musicians like

Proposition To Reface Mount Rushmore

  • 1. Proposition to Reface Mount Rushmore Over the years, America has produced many people worthy of having their faces chiseled into a large rock for all to see. Although the current Mount Rushmore possesses faces that are very important and worthy, they are no longer relevant in today's society. The proposition I have for the re–facing of Mount Rushmore is sure to be relevant and inspiring to Americans for centuries to come. Edgar Allen Poe was an American poet and short story composer whose writings have influenced literature for a century and a half. Calvin Coolidge was a strong leader who was appointed to presidential office in the 1920s. He also had a very awesome last name. Bob Dylan is a nearly prophetic poet and song writer, the voice of a generation, and an inspiration to many. Jennifer (Stelter) Schubert is a tenacious woman who has overcame trials and tribulations daunting to any human and came out on top. I propose that the faces of Edgar Allen Poe, Calvin Coolidge, Bob Dylan, and Jennifer Schubert be carved into Mount Rushmore for their impact on past and present American society, leadership qualities, and overall awesomeness. Edgar Allen Poe is credited with the composition a poem that has been extremely prominent throughout the past century and a half – "The Raven". But this was not the only work that has stuck with Americans all of these years; Poe was a man of many talents – and troubles. Edgar Allen Poe was born to two actors whom he never really got to know. He was separated from his siblings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Folk Tale And Tale Comparison In our time period, folktales and myths can occur in daily life. They share a relevance in our actions, our choices, and our feelings. For example, in today's world we are like the greek gods and goddesses. They are often jealous of one another and fight with each other over foolish things like today people will fight over foolish things and share some jealousy. Although people may disagree with tales sharing similarities, tales like "The Apple Of Discord" still connect with our actions, choices, and feelings in today's world. The Poem "Apple of Discord" by Kate Hovey, is about the goddess of discord, Eris. Eris is angry at the gods and other goddesses because the exclude her, yet she is doing the same thing they are. Eventually, she throws ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Modest Mussorgsky During the first half of the 19th century, opera was in it's golden age. Composers sought to capture drama, emotion, and personalities, creating a closer connection with their audience. With this, they also began to reflect on the concerns of a broad audience; love and loyalty to family and/or nation, women's desire for independence, struggle for freedom, fear of evil. This want to appeal to the population sparked the theme of national identity, which came to be known as Nationalism. The French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars helped spread the concept of a nation as a group of citizens with a common heritage, rather than as subjects of a ruler. Influence of this idea grew throughout the 19th century. Nationalism unified the people through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Immigrants from Europe, Latin America, Asia, and former African American slaves and their descendants, brought their own musical traditions from folk to classical. Ethnic divisions were the distinctions between classical, popular, and folk music. These three categories represented different attitudes toward notation, composition, and performance. Classical tradition centered on the composer and the work, and required intricate notation of the score. Popular music was written down and sold as a commodity, but centered on the performer and the performance, allowing for leeway in the notated music. Folk music was independent of musical notation, being passed on through oral tradition. Overall, these three categories often overlapped. Folk tunes were written down and sold as popular music, arranged for concert performance, or incorporated into classical pieces; classical works were transcribed and altered for performance in popular venues; and some popular songs became so well known that they were then passed down orally, like folk ... • 5. Judy Collins Pros And Cons "Both Sides Now" was a song written by Joni Mitchell but first recorded by Judy Collins, a folk singer, in the Album WildfFlowers, in 1967. The version created by Judy Collins was a top–ten hit on the U.S. singles chart during the fall of 1968. A year later, Joni Mitchell produced the album Clouds in which "Both sides, now" was included. Again, Mitchell re–recorded the song in a lush, orchestrated fashion for her 2000 album Both Sides. Notably, the Judy Collins version of the song reached number 8 on the U.S. pop singles charts by December and number 6 in Canada. "Both Sides Now" also won a Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance in 1969. Furthermore, it is essential to understand the songwriter's state of mind during the creation of "Both ... She sings "but now it's just another show/ You leave 'em laughin when you go"(17– 18) to point out that the world can take your happiness away and even seem to be your harshest critic. The rest of the song continues to convey the same message but uses more personal and realistic tales that continue to rhyme; for example, the 2nd verse illustrates a warm summer night at a fair in the 1960s while the 1st verse used an abstract approach by mentioning clouds blocking the light. Similarly, the 3rd verse is more relatable than the 2nd verse and shows a more personal touch in which the songwriter mentions that she used to express her emotions freely, but was critiqued by others. • 6. Egil's Saga Essay The author most likely intended for Egil's Saga to be a historical documentation of Scandinavia, its culture, and several of its inhabitants. The tale could also be seen as a folk tale, set in a realistic setting with real people, but the events are skewed and not quite right. The epic accomplishes the first possible intention through its many characters, the use known locations, and basing the majority of the tale around two individual families that would have been well known around the time it was written. However, the tale is not entirely accurate, which strengthens the idea that it was more of a folk tale. Throughout the epic the audience is introduced to two families, beginning far before the birth of the man who would attributed to the title. The tale then follows these families through the events that led up to the main plot of the epic, going so far as to keep detailed track of who married who and where each character came from. An example of this would be the detailed description of Olaf on page 168 in chapter 79. This introduction not only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was due to most people being unable to read. Only those with enough money could afford to get an education and learn how to read their own language. This meant that only a small portion of the population would be able to read Egil's Saga. However, these educated individuals could read the story aloud in Icelandic to a crowd. With this in mind the story was most likely spread primarily through word of mouth. This is also shown through the style in which the piece was written. Egil's Saga is quick paced and exaggerated, like a folk tale version of a family story. This stylistic choice would keep an audience tuned in to the story and unsure of when to walk away from it. Each chapter is filled with action and lacks any real downtime. Someone is always up to something that is at least mildly exciting. This keeps most readers, or audience members, on their ... • 7. Bob Dylan Synthesis "For having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition," ("All Nobel Prizes in Literature"). Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016. Unprecedentedly, he became the first singer and songwriter who had ever earned the Nobel Prize in Literature in history. The plausible reasons that Bob was elected mainly reflect in the poetic lyrics Bob has in his songs and the enormous historical effects lyrics show. Bob Dylan, a rock singer, songwriter of folk and country music, was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota. Later on, he started writing songs about chronicle social issues, such as wars and civil rights, in college. In 1961, Dylan signed his first recording contract and emerged as one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Lyrically, "Tangled Up in Blue" chronicles the rise and fall of two relationships: between an unnamed "he" and "she" and between a first–person narrator (also unnamed) and the same "she."" (Barkhorn). In order to correctly express the emotion of the protagonists in the song, Dylan basically utilizes all five senses, especially sight, touch, and hearing: "I heard her say over my shoulder/"We'll meet again someday on the avenue."" (Dylan 24, 25). Dylan uses "dark, sad night" to connect the color with the emotion. Darkness represents sadness; it shows that "he" feels so upset that they split up. "Drift down" vividly tells the readers that "he" never finds a long–time job because he cannot find interests in doing these jobs but thinking about "her". Dylan also makes images by using disparate phrases. The quote "But I never did like it all that much/And one day the ax just fell" (Dylan 29, 30). shows tough life for people during the postwar era. By combining five senses with some specific words and phrases, Dylan transforms ordinary song lyrics into poetry, thus making him worthy of the Nobel Prize for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Comparison of the Russian Folk Tale “The Wolf and the... What is common in the tales of different peoples? And how do they differ? I have had many questions and wanted to find the answers. My research is devoted to analysis and comparison of the two tales about animals. The first one is the Russian folk tale "The wolf and the goat" and other one is the English folk tale "The wolf and the three kittens". Comparison began with an introduction to the history of fairy tales: the definition of the genre, the collection and study of fairy tales, with their classification. Every person has the recollection of how our grandmother or mother read a lot of interesting tales. The structure of a fairy tale about the animal includes a small amount of text and simple plot. Perhaps only the structure of fairy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrator is not simply translate the text but also plays it. For example, the English fairy tale teaches the reader to distinguish between good and the evil, empathize and help the weak, and believe in justice. The main heroes of this tale are the wolf from the evil and the cat from the good. The whole plot of a fairy tale built on a permanent clash between good and evil. The wolf is very tricky and dangerous. But humor softens the force of evil, which takes place in English weighty tale. Evil characters constantly ridiculed and often fall into the absurd, comic situations. This technique enhances the action that leads to the climax and denouement. Feature of fairy tales is that it is off from the real–time. Strict sequence of events creates a special fabulous time in which the cat has to overcome a series of tests before they will find happiness. Usually tale ends with the victory of good. Evil is punished. The wolf in full receives their just deserts for their actions. In the English fairy tales usually do not have a traditional beginning and end: "living – were", "and I was there". In the English fairy tale is a tragic denouement. Tales from the same plot and similar names are obtained for three reasons. The first reason is the fact that fairy tales appear in small tribes and then transferred to other countries. But they remain folk traditions such as the introduction and motivation but adapted to local custom. The second reason reveals the existence of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Characteristics Of Folk Tales Part l: Lecher states that several factors account for the difficulty the Grimm's and other nineteenth century folklorists encountered in collecting and retelling folktales in the authentic voice of the folk. Three of these are as follows: 1. The purpose of the collectors and retellers, 2. The judgments of the collectors and retellers as to what constitutes a good story, 3. The value the retellers place on translating the stories from what is effective in the oral format into what is effective in the written format (42). I can see why these factors are so important in folk literature, because these stories had to passes by mouth and those can easily be misunderstood or switched around to make the story sound different. Also, Lecher states that frequently, these collectors either had preconceived ideas of which stories represented a culture or were not told all the types of stories that members of the culture told each other (Okpewho, 1983; Berry, 1991) (42). This is an example of how there would be issues in telling folk stories. It happens still today, sometime hears a story and goes to tell it again but changes it just a little bit, then the next person goes to tell the story and changes it again just a little bit, and so on and so forth. Also, some people may tell stories that are bias to their culture as said in the quote. Another problem/ misconception of folk literature is that anyone who has tires to find new stories to retell for young audiences quickly becomes aware ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Essay Unit 1 Chapter 1 Long ago, at a small village next to Roc–A–Fella peaks, there lived three young boys. Jermaine, Nas, and Kendrick. Kendrick was a descendant of the lightning district of the village, Nas was born and raised in the fire district, and Jermaine was a simple village boy who grew crops and raised cattle. Ever since the village was established it was divided into four main groups. The fire district, the lightning district, the village folk, and the All Mighty's. Mostly all lived in peace until one day. It was December and the day was cold. The wind blew rapidly and incoherently as the village folk worked on the crops and attend to their many cattle. The people are shocked, but their moral dilemma is short lived when it seems this is their only option. It is decided! If the snow does not clear up in the next three days, the strong of the district will ambush the unsuspecting people of the lightning district; using any force necessary to clear the land. When word spreads to the lightning district the All–Seer for their land, Voltage, declares war on any advances that are made by the fire district. • 11. The Fiction of Literature: Folk Tales, Fan Fiction, and... The Fiction of Literature: Folk Tales, Fan Fiction, and Oral Tradition in the Internet Age In 1951, JRR Tolkien wrote a letter to his publisher, Milton Waldman, in an attempt to describe his vision for The Lord of the Rings. After outlining the scope of his many interconnected plots, Tolkien self– consciously articulated his hopes for his novel's reception: "Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic to the level of romantic fairy–story... The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama. Absurd." With the benefit of hindsight, we know now that his idea was not 'absurd'. Tolkien almost presciently describes the place his novels have taken in Western culture. Tolkien's works, in the words of Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey, "ha[ve] become part of the mental furniture of the culture... [They are] a story that everybody kn[ows] about, even if they c[a]n't remember ever reading or hearing any version of it." This cultural awareness of a story is the direct result of the adaptations and additions Tolkien described. First with official illustrations, and later with an entire genre of Tolkien–inspired bands and musicians, and even a ballet, many other hands and minds have added to the majestic whole. • 12. Indian Folk Tales and Religious Performances So the Bhakti movement leads the religious performances while secular performances are often based on folk idioms and beliefs. The religious performances are often very polished performances because of the religious subject matter and it needs much attention in the performance while on the other hand the secular performance contains some dialogues in the form of double layered meaning and a little bit of vulgarity on stage by nata or vidushika. In the matter of adopting the dramatic techniques, religious performances adopt most of the dramatic techniques from Sanskrit theatre while on the contrary secular performances mixe the elements of Sanskrit theatre with some regional elements like dance, music, regional dialects, idioms, etc. Mythology is a part of living culture of India, especially of rural India. Indian folk theatre is essential mythological in the matter of the selection of characters, themes, narrative parts, etc. Characters from myths, epics, and legends are always presented on the stage and they present a lively reality on the stage. Sanskrit theatre also uses myth and mythological narratives for the dramatic performance as in folk theatre. • 13. Symbols in the Fairy Tales and Folk Tales Certain psychologist have hypothesized that fairytales represent the most primitive way the mind operates, and within certain folktales, the true message is possible hidden beneath symbols. One folktale in particular, Little Red Riding Hood, is full of symbols with possible deeper meanings. For example some people have speculated that the red hood that Little Red Riding Hood wears is a symbol of the girls sexuality and the "little" in her nickname places an emphasis on her budding nature. That is to say the young girl is in the beginning stages of becoming a woman and doesn't possess much knowledge on the subject of sex. Keeping with this same theme, it can further be hypothesized that the wolf represents the foreign idea of sex, which the young girl finds both unsettling and alluring. By telling the wolf the directions to her grandmother's house, Little Red Riding Hood is evading having to confront the uncomfortable feeling created by the wolf's presence. Instead of dealing with him, Little Red Riding Hood redirects him to her grandmother who is already a woman and is therefore more mature and capable of dealing with the wolf and what he represents (Bettelheim 1). Additionally, the winding path with the flowers that Little Red Riding Hood picks represents temptation and the contrasting direct path to Grandmother's house represents virtue. Finally, the act of the wolf eating the little girl is a symbol for the loss of her innocence due to the fact that the only reason the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. The Consequences Of Folk Tales Red Riding Hood, Henny Penny, La Llorona, and Rumpelstiltskin, are all folk tales written to demonstrate how our decisions, specifically the bad ones we make, could ultimately result in our demise. Although it may seem like a rather gruesome approach to teaching a simple life lesson, it has proved to be one of the most effective and influential methods for centuries. These folk tales stress the importance of proper decision making; if the wrong one is made, the consequences could be fatal. Throughout history, folk tales have evolved to fit the desires and necessities of its audience. These stories have been edited and revised to assimilate to the cultural views and values of the people who are sharing them at the time. Due to the fact that culture is continually progressing and shifting its identity, many folk tales now have quite a collection of alternate endings. As stated in the introduction all these stories all have a lesson behind them. All of them being the of outcome of death if you make the wrong decision. In Red Riding Hood the main character gets fooled by the wolf who impersonates her grandmother, the wolf then proceeds to eat her in one big gulp after being tricked to get near the wolf in disguise. In Henny Penny the hen believes that the sky is falling after an acorn falls on her head. She tells a lot of her friends that the sky is falling and they believe her. They then meet a fox who lies to them and eventually eats all of them. In La Llorona she killed her kids over a jealous rage in spite of her children because of her husband, which was a terrible decision. In turn, she died by killing herself due to regret of such an irrational decision. Lastly in Rumpelstiltskin he challenged a woman that if she guessed his name correctly in 3 days she could keep her child, unfortunately he got a bit too cocky and started to him a tune to a song which gave away his name in it. Which in turn got him killed because as the woman put the puzzle pieces together, she figured out his name, which was Rumpelstiltskin. He ended up getting mad and stomped his legs on the ground and ripped himself into two pieces. All of these folk tales are still relevant today and have withstood the test of time because ... • 18. Essay on Bob Dylan Regarding significant musical movements in history, more specifically the twenty first century, few were more important than the folk revolution that took shape in the mid–nineteen hundreds. One of the leaders of this revolution was Robert Allen Zimmerman, known by his popular assumed name, Bob Dylan. Born in 1941 in Minnesota, Dylan grew up the grandchild of Jewish–Russian immigrants and had a surprisingly unexceptional childhood. His interest in music became evident in his high school years when he taught himself basic piano and guitar. From these rudimentary skills Dylan would build his knowledge and experience in music to his present status as a forefather of folk music in the rock era. Accordingly, a song from ... This would be his first taste of the big city and the life that awaited him. The sight and sounds of the big city opened many new vistas for the young Dylan and he took advantage of his situation by studying the roots of contemporary rock. He began to listen to the works of folk pioneers like Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, and Woody Guthrie. At the same time Dylan was beginning to perform solo at local Minneapolis night spots such as the Ten O'Clock Scholar cafe and the St. Paul's Purple Onion Pizza Parlor. During this time Dylan was honing his guitar skills and harmonica work and developing his famous nasal voice which would become his trademark. Halfway through his college career Dylan decided it was time for a move. He packed up and moved to New York City with two main motivations. His primary motivation was to become part of the Greenwich Village folk–music scene which was burgeoning in the city. His second reason for moving was to meet his idle, Woodie Guthrie, who was in a hospital in New Jersey with a rare hereditary disease. Dylan would succeed on both counts. Not only did he meet Guthrie but he became a fixture at his bedside. As well, Bob Dylan was now a recognizable name among the folk clubs and coffee houses of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folk Tale Essay Vladimir Propp presents an excellent argument in his "Morphology of the Folktale." In testing his hypothesis he compares the themes of about 100 tales and comes out with a formula, ultimately coming to the conclusion that there is really only one fairy tale in its structure. He takes "a description of the tale according to its component parts and [compares] the relationship of these components to each other and to the whole" (Tatar 382). There is a significant amount of repeating functions in these classic stories. Propp defines the function "as an act of a character, defined from the point of view of its significance for the course of the action." (Tatar 383). Functions are stable elements in the story, they never change. "The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "[W]hen you're out in the woods, walk properly and don't stray from the path. Otherwise you'll fall and break the glass, and then there'll be nothing for Grandmother" (Tatar 14). The second function, interdiction is addressed. This function is left out of "The Story of Grandmother" and "Little Red Riding Hood." When Little Red Cap stops as she sees the wolf, she is disobeying her mother because she is not walking properly, interdiction is violated. All of the stories include running into the wolf in the woods this being the fourth function. This formula is plain to see so far. If there was a number assigned to each of the actions "The Story of Grandmother" and "Little Red Riding Hood" follow an A then D formula skipping functions B and C. Whereas "Little Red Cap" has followed the formula exactly in order, A, B, C, then D. In each of the fairy tales the wolf approaches the young girl in the woods and gets information about where she is going and tries to trick her. In further proving Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale", the wolf tries to trick Little Red Riding Hood in different ways in the stories. One story she takes a path of needles and the wolf takes a path of pins, knowing that Little Red Riding Hood would stop to pick the needles up. This is how he tricks her. Kennedy, America's hope for Camelot fades and life began to look a little more complicated. Congress deemed President Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" implausible as Johnson backed the country into a war that was not ours. Then, while many Americans began to realize that the War in Vietnam could not be won, there was major public outcry about ending our involvement in a war for the first time in the country's history. As the early '60s became the late '60s, youths who had grown into the counter cultural movement, took the folk musical feeling of The Times They Are A–Changin' (Bob Dylan) and began to apply it to their actions. Instead of wishing that the government would solve problems, the mostly–college age students took matters into their own hands. Complaints turned into protests and protests turned into marches. Society's view of its government would never be the same. As students and other young adults started expressing their opinions on the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, America's drug policy, and other assorted issues of relevance to American young adults, students used folk music to guide their views. Also, folk musicians used the feelings of the youth culture to help shape their music to form an accelerated cycle. However, as the counter cultural movement began to grow not in number but in visibility and media accessibility, the outspoken Americans began to see little response from a government that paid them no heed. So, the tone of the language started to change. Coupled with, but not necessarily as a result of, the rise of rock and roll to replace folk music in popularity, the vocal protests took on harsher, more severe words. • 23. The Similarities And Differences Of Fairy Folk Tales Comparative Analysis Essay Fairy Folk Tales are the most popular types of literature. The tale is an orally transmitted tradition by generations through the time; some events are changed to fit reality and society. Folk fairy tales deal with the dualism of the good and the evil. They are basing on a conflict between the good and the evil forces. The conclusion comes from aspirations of the human desire to achieve the justices. There are no known authors and sources for ancient's literature. We have many versions of the story; they are credited by many authors later. Each tale is very like some other culture's tale. Each culture has own tales, but all the tales are similarities and differences in some points. This essay will compare between two fairy tales, "Cinderella" and "In the Land of Small Dragon". The tale of Cinderella is a French tale. It is credited by Charles Perrault; it is published in 1697. The in the Land of Small Dragon is a Vietnamese folktale; it is told by Dang Manh Kha in 1979. The tale works to improve the man's image, as a fair and a wise father; or a prince who is the savior of hopeless girl. The hopeless girl expresses a kind and a simple girl; otherwise, the woman mirrors a wicked, jealous, and ugly character. That is clear in these two–fairy tales. • 24. Analysis Of Blowin In The Wind Dylan's early music, written as part of this folk revival, reflects this individualist style of political folk songs, but the degree and subject of political conviction seems to be less important to him than the expression of emotion, and a certain identification of himself as being political. This is readily apparent in his work from the 1963 album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan". Two of his great early political forays, "Blowin in the Wind" and "Masters of War", play in quite nicely with the notion that this generation of folk artists were more abstract, asking less rational, or rhetorical, questions, and expressing an anger with the world, but not offering much in the way of action. The second verse of "Blowin in the Wind" expresses an anger with society's willingness to sit idly by in the face of injustices, but due to its vague language, this anger is not directed at any particular instance of injustice: "How many years can some people exist/Before they're allowed to be free/Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head/And pretend that he just doesn't see/The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind/The answer is blowin' in the wind." Moreover, the refrain is also incredibly ambiguous, and like much of the ephemeral political music of the time, doesn't offer a concrete solution to the problem. "Masters of War" offers a scathing indictment of the arms build–up of the Cold War. Much of the song calls for the death of the war profiteers, and offers a grim image in ... The novel serves as a dazzling combination of slapstick comedy, spiritual wisdom, and nonsense with profundity. Particularly interesting is the metamorphosis of the Monkey or the symbolism of the Stone Monkey. This character change is noteworthy and would be a focal aspect of the screenplay. In the end, accomplishing the mission of reaching the scrolls back to China, Tripitaka and his three disciples get escorted to heaven by the eight Vajraparis. They all get promoted by Buddha himself as Tripitaka is now "Buddha of Precocious Merit," Monkey is made to "Buddha Victorious in Strife," and Pigsy is the "Cleanser of Altars." In the beginning the Monkey is carved out of stone symbolizing his lack of being apprehensive and belittling fear. Because of how he was brought to existence his careless and reckless nature was brought about by how he was born with no family, especially parents. Due to his recklessness and misbehavior in Heaven, Monkey had to be trapped under the Mountain of five elements. This is particularly interesting as this entrapment serves as symbolism of how Buddha is superior to man, and the need for the quest to enlightenment. However, a distinct change was evident as mentioned, "But fortunately, when the time of your retribution was ended, you turned your heart to the Great faith and your endeavor to the ... • 26. Literary Folk Tales: The Origin Of The Literary Fairy Tales In this section I will shortly outline the origin of the literary fairy tale and its features as a genre. I will then discuss how, despite heavy feminist criticism, the genre gained popularity among late twentieth–century feminist writers. The genre of fairy tales has its roots in folklore and in oral tradition. Jack Zipes remarks that fairy tales and folk tales are today generally confused with one another and that: He also maintains that "fairy tales have been in existence as oral folk tales for thousands of years and first became what we call literary fairy tales toward the end of the seventeenth century [emphasis in the original]." For Carter, while folklore emerges from oral "unofficial" culture, the fairy tale is the product of a literary "official" culture. Whereas folklore results in "stories without known originators that can be made and remade again and again by every person who tells them," literary fairy tales "transformed an oral tradition into texts that become middle–class ... Both stories deal with the issues of violence and racism, although in very different ways. Based on both works, I believe that Bob Jones' figure leaves a more lasting and long–term consequence of racism. Chester Himes' novel about Bob Jones has somewhat of an autobiographical touch to it. It is more persuasive in the way that, he and Bob have a lot in common. Even though Paredes' character focuses on a real character he is made into a fictional, whereas Bob Jones may or may not be representative of some of the author 's actual experiences were, leaven the reader or audience with a longer lasting impression of the hardship during those times. Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones and Tam Lin by Pamela Dean are two such retellings in which Jones and Dean have masterfully brought the events and characters of the traditional ballad into the modern world. Despite the fact that both novels have drawn from the same source, they have a number of distinct differences, especially when it comes to the relationship between their Janet and Tam Lin characters (Polly Whittacker and Tom Lynn in Fire and Hemlock, and Janet Carter and Thomas Lane in Tam Lin), and the balance of power between the two throughout the narrative. While Jones' novel is very much centered around the idea of "Tam Lin" being one of the rare few folk ballads or tales with a female hero and is structured as such to give Polly a position of power and equality in the relationship by the end, Dean seems to approach her retelling of the ballad from a different direction, leading into the question of whether Janet really is as empowered by her role as the hero as it may seem at first. In both novels, the first meeting between the Janet and Tam Lin characters sets a strong base for their initial relationship, especially regarding the power dynamics within that relationship. The stories hold clear messages for their readers, but they also send more subtle messages with their details. Fairy tales are especially targeted, though not exclusively, at children because they are passed on by parents each night before bed. But some of the stories that have been told for a long time across many different cultures have affected the perspectives of people more than they realize. One of the most well–known examples of a fairy tale that has been influential in American culture is the classic tale of Cinderella. Though the details of the tale can vary with different authors and cultures, aspects of it have taken on a certain significance in modern American culture in multiple ways and the story keeps changing as society progresses. Cinderella now serves as a reference point in American culture that contains societal messages about gender roles, beauty, and femininity that people have incorporated into their developing worldview. In many ways, fairy tales influence how people see the world or how they used to see it when the story was created. Leo Tolstoy argued in his work "What is Art?" that "The majority has always understood, and still understands, what we also recognize as being the very best of art...folk legends, fairy tales and folk songs are understood by all" (266). • 35. The Inuit Folk Tale The Inuit folk tale titled "The Boy From The Bottom Of The Sea, Who Frightened The People Of The House To Death". Does not waste much time with lengthy introductions. One of the main characters, the wife that escapes her abusive husband by building a house on the bottom of the sea, is not described in more detail. However the only part that keeps the story going is son she soon has. At first I imagined the wanting to play with the other children was to be the main plot of the story. However as soon as they steeped foot on land it turned into a story of revenge. Wanting to hit his father the way his mother had been hit years before seemed to cast the main reason he wanted to go on land in a shadow. Incomplete, the story does not ... Romanians will go to the utmost extreme of providing extravagant food, entertainment, and ceremonies. Before the wedding, the groom will visit the house of the bride to bring her to the place where the wedding will be held. All of the many people involved in the wedding then proceed in their cars to the wedding. Typically, they will drive leisurely and will honk at pedestrians to cheer for the couple. Once the procession reaches the place of the wedding, which will usually be an Orthodox church, the priest will lead the people into the main auditorium for the ceremony. The ceremony itself, which is comprised of the priest blessing the couple, reading from the Bible, and singing, could take up to three hours. After the ceremony, the couple drinks from the same glass of wine and eat the same piece of bread to symbolize unity. After the couple is unified, they proceed to visit the numerous pictures of Jesus and the saints and kiss them. • 38. Music, Music And Music There is no better way to measure how far society has evolved, but through music. It has been a vessel used to evince key emotions when words do not seem to be enough. The dulcet hum of the violin or even the sharp notes from an electric guitar are more than enough to express those intangible, yet impressionable feelings that cannot be fully appreciated through words. However, combine words and music together and the composer has a tool that can awaken a thousand souls all at once. Over the millenniums, music has had a profound ability to capture revolutionary moments, condemn injustice, and raise hope for change in the future. In particular, music and singing have played an integral role in inspiring, mobilizing, and giving voice to civil rights movements around the world. ''The freedom songs are playing an active and vital role in our struggle, ' ' said Martin Luther King, Jr, during the Albany Movement. ''They give the people new courage and a sense of unity. I think they keep alive a faith, a radiant hope, in the future, particularly in our most trying hours '." Or as Folk Singer Phil Ochs once said, "one good song with a message is capable of bringing across a point more deeply to more people than a thousand rallies." However, fast track to the modern era, and more infrequent are the antiwar sentiments of artists like Bob Dylan of the USA, or the government–challenging and anti–apartheid lyrics of musicians like South Africa 's Miriam Makeba.
