Aim of the project
NGKC (National Go-Kart Championship) 2014, a design challenge initiated by ISNEE (Indian
Society of New Era Engineers). It was an inter-collegiate event where each team had to
design and fabricate a Go-Kart powered by an IC Engine within given constraints. The first
stage or Virtual round of the event comprised of a presentation round, where each team
had to showcase their vehicle’s design and support materials. Every team had to qualify for
the second round or Dynamic round. The next stage was presenting the real and working
model of the vehicle. The teams had to carry on major part of the Design and Fabrication
process without the help of experts. The event aims to inculcate a sense of learning beyond
books and how to cater to market needs. Bringing the engineer as well as entrepreneur out
of the participants. The vehicle being manufactured was made for the purpose of
participation in National Go-Kart Championship 2014 which was held at Kari Motor
Speedway, Coimbatore.
Vehicle’s specification:
Vehicle type- Single driver 4 wheeled racing vehicle powered by an IC Engine.
Space frame type Chassis (Monocoque) designed on SOLIDWORKS for reduced weight and
enhanced safety.
Chassis material- AISI 1018
Engine specifications- 125cc 13bhp DTS-i engine. (Derived from Bajaj Discover)
Power transmission using Chain-Sprocket transmission system.
Assisted with two Disc brakes on rear axle for optimum braking performance. (Derived from
Apache RTR)
Front wheel type steering system using rack and pinion steering gears. (Derived from
Mahindra Gio)
Minimum Turning Radius- 2.2 m
Minimum stopping distance- 10 m
Maximum speed- 60 kmph
Mileage- 45 kmpl
The vehicle was equipped with few innovative technologies which aimed at drive’s safety.
They were:
Auto actuated fire extinguisher- The fire extinguisher starts working automatically when
experiences overheat conditions.
Adaptive brake light- intensity of brake light will depend on how much pressure one applies
on the brake pedal. Helps in decreasing the reaction time of drivers.
Engine heat alarm- If the engine gets overheated up to a safe limit, an alarm would be raised
mentioning this heat rise.
Success
For the first round or the Virtual round Team SAMVEG under SAE Collegiate club went to
ACROPOLIS Institute, Indore to showcase the vehicle’s design and all support documents.
About 200 teams registered for the event and 180 teams reported for the venue. 94 teams
were selected for the next round and we were ranked 46 in that list. Though the rank is low
but we were the top team in Gwalior, ahead of the other two participating teams Malwa
and RJIT.
Now for the next stage we had to manufacture the vehicle, by converting our paper plans to
reality. This does possessed real problems but were an eye opener and provided a rich
learning experience. The vehicle aimed for the event was successfully made with the best of
our abilities. The team was very sure of its optimum performance in the event.
Below is our performance in the Dynamic round which was held at KARI Motor Speedway,
Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu). Here 82 teams out of 94 selected teams came with their vehicle to
participate in the event.
The vehicle had to pass through number of rounds only after which it would be qualified for
the final round.
The pre-final rounds and our performance in them:
1. DisAsm- This event consisted of the dismantling and assembling the different parts
of the vehicle. Maximum six (6) members were allowed in this activity and maximum
time limit for the completion of this event was sixty (60) minutes.
Result-We did the required job in 20 minutes, which was the fourth shortest time in
our group which consisted of 40 teams.
2. Technical Inspection- This event was a static event as well, it aimed at checking the
rulebook compliance of the vehicle. Technical inspection clearance was a must to
participate in further Dynamic events.
Result-We cleared the Technical Inspection in our second attempt.
3. Brake Test- This event aimed at testing the Braking efficiency of the vehicle. A
certain distance was specified and the vehicle had to stop before that specified line
running at a given speed.
Result-We cleared the Brake test in our first attempt.
4. Acceleration Test- This event aimed at checking the acceleration of the vehicle. The
vehicle had to cover a specified distance in specified time.
Result-We cleared the acceleration test in our first attempt.
5. Skid Pad- This event aimed at testing the handling of vehicle on flat surface. Number
of hindrance had to be cleared which could be a figure of 8 or constant turns.
Result-We performed well in this event and qualified for the next event.
6. Autocross- This event was similar to skid pad but it aimed at testing the vehicle’s
manoeuvrability at tight turns and speed. The event had time limits as well.
Result-During this event our vehicle broke down and we could not qualify for further
rounds.
This was the last event before the Final Endurance Run. If we would have cleared this event
we would have been in the final round.
Since we could not qualify for the final round there was no exact rank provided by the event,
although there were about 35 teams which reached up to the second last round. So we were
in last top 35 teams of event.
Learning Outcomes:
1. While working on a technical project, always get your basics right. Do the Brainstorm
and required calculations.
2. For a successful project, processing of the plan is most important thing to keep in
mind. Having a backup plan also is always handy.
3. Be objective oriented, set deadlines for tasks.
4. Always try to complete a certain task before the deadline, so as to cover up with the
possible failure occurrence.
5. Handle the time management and team management thing very efficiently.
6. Always keep an eye on the financial part, don’t let the budget slip out of your hands.

Project report ngkc14

  • 1.
  • 2. Aim of the project NGKC (National Go-Kart Championship) 2014, a design challenge initiated by ISNEE (Indian Society of New Era Engineers). It was an inter-collegiate event where each team had to design and fabricate a Go-Kart powered by an IC Engine within given constraints. The first stage or Virtual round of the event comprised of a presentation round, where each team had to showcase their vehicle’s design and support materials. Every team had to qualify for the second round or Dynamic round. The next stage was presenting the real and working model of the vehicle. The teams had to carry on major part of the Design and Fabrication process without the help of experts. The event aims to inculcate a sense of learning beyond books and how to cater to market needs. Bringing the engineer as well as entrepreneur out of the participants. The vehicle being manufactured was made for the purpose of participation in National Go-Kart Championship 2014 which was held at Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore. Vehicle’s specification: Vehicle type- Single driver 4 wheeled racing vehicle powered by an IC Engine. Space frame type Chassis (Monocoque) designed on SOLIDWORKS for reduced weight and enhanced safety. Chassis material- AISI 1018 Engine specifications- 125cc 13bhp DTS-i engine. (Derived from Bajaj Discover) Power transmission using Chain-Sprocket transmission system. Assisted with two Disc brakes on rear axle for optimum braking performance. (Derived from Apache RTR) Front wheel type steering system using rack and pinion steering gears. (Derived from Mahindra Gio) Minimum Turning Radius- 2.2 m Minimum stopping distance- 10 m Maximum speed- 60 kmph Mileage- 45 kmpl The vehicle was equipped with few innovative technologies which aimed at drive’s safety. They were: Auto actuated fire extinguisher- The fire extinguisher starts working automatically when experiences overheat conditions. Adaptive brake light- intensity of brake light will depend on how much pressure one applies on the brake pedal. Helps in decreasing the reaction time of drivers. Engine heat alarm- If the engine gets overheated up to a safe limit, an alarm would be raised mentioning this heat rise.
  • 3. Success For the first round or the Virtual round Team SAMVEG under SAE Collegiate club went to ACROPOLIS Institute, Indore to showcase the vehicle’s design and all support documents. About 200 teams registered for the event and 180 teams reported for the venue. 94 teams were selected for the next round and we were ranked 46 in that list. Though the rank is low but we were the top team in Gwalior, ahead of the other two participating teams Malwa and RJIT. Now for the next stage we had to manufacture the vehicle, by converting our paper plans to reality. This does possessed real problems but were an eye opener and provided a rich learning experience. The vehicle aimed for the event was successfully made with the best of our abilities. The team was very sure of its optimum performance in the event. Below is our performance in the Dynamic round which was held at KARI Motor Speedway, Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu). Here 82 teams out of 94 selected teams came with their vehicle to participate in the event. The vehicle had to pass through number of rounds only after which it would be qualified for the final round. The pre-final rounds and our performance in them: 1. DisAsm- This event consisted of the dismantling and assembling the different parts of the vehicle.
