This document summarizes one project manager's experience reconciling project management theory with real-world practice. It discusses some disconnects between PM processes and knowledge areas outlined in methodologies and the realities of managing projects. Specifically, it notes that while PM process groups are understood, properly rightsizing processes to projects and accounting for factors beyond the triple constraint of time, cost, and quality can be challenging. Managing stakeholder expectations and controlling scope creep are also areas where methodologies provide limited practical guidance.
Traditional project management methods are based on scientific principles considered “normal science,” but lack a theoretical basis for this approach. These principles make use of linear step–wise refinement of the project management processes using a planning–as–management paradigm. Plans made in this paradigm are adjusted by linear feedback methods. These plans cannot cope with the multiple interacting and continuously changing technology and market forces. They behave as a linear, deterministic, Closed–Loop control system.
This short presentation is about Project stakeholders. Who are the project stakeholders for a given project? Will briefly discuss the project manager, project management team, project team, sponsor, and other stakeholders.

Project management theory and management of large complex projects finalBob Prieto
Consider this the third in a series of extended posts on project management of large complex projects.
In the first post, I asked if it is time to revisit PM theory. In the second post, my "Physics of Projects" article, I make the case that just as Einstein's theory was needed at scale since classical theory wouldn't suffice perhaps too such a new theory at scale is required in PM.
In this article (not light reading or for the faint of heart) I make the case for some of what needs to happen at scale by reviewing the evolution of general management theory and the theories of projects and project management. I expect this to be controversial in some quarters so it is heavily footnoted. The last time I did a comparable piece on systemic innovation in the engineering and construction industry, I had the premise challenged (we are very innovative) and several cases made for incrementalism.
In the article I make a number of points:
• we can learn more from general management theory than we have
• foundations for PM are weak.......we need clearly defined strategic business outcomes, better owner readiness, better baseline modeling and stronger focus on driving out biases in planning
• focus on flows is more important than just focusing on tasks
• Stakeholders shape large complex projects more than we give them credit for.....this leads to multifinality
• New flows are created by stakeholders....influencing flows.....that can directly act on SBOs, transformational flows and tasks, and each other creating new induced flows

36. Does the Triple Constraint Rule? The importance of the infamous three constraints time/quality/budget is greatly exaggerated by all methodologies Customer/stakeholder satisfaction is greatly underappreciated and can be depending on many other factors than just the infamous three.
39. Gaps in PIMBOK Methodologies do not spend enough time evaluating and providing mechanisms on how to: Manage Stakeholder expectations, and Manage Scope Creep. They tell you how to monitor it, but not much on controlling it.
Editor's Notes
Without a "project management champion" that truly sees the value of PM as an organizational core competency it is very difficult to implement a PM methodology. The disconnect that results is that "management" sees project management as nothing more than a gantt chart and a person with a check list going around and checking to see what tasks are completed.
