There is no PMI / PMBOK Methodology We Use the PMI Methodology We are following the PMBOK® Guide to manage our projects We just implemented the PMBOK® Guide
Facts about the PMBOK Guide… The word “PMBOK” was coined by Max Wideman in the early 1980s and stands for Project Management Body of Knowledge  www.maxwideman.com The new PMBOK® Guide 4 th Edition will be available on December 31 st 2008.
The PMBOK® Guide… … is not a blueprint for managing projects … does not give you a project lifecycle … does not include PM processes … does not include templates … is a consensus … is about 400 pages long … is an ANSI standard … costs around $35 … will put you to sleep
Even the PMBOK® Guide says so! The knowledge and practices described are applicable to most projects most of the time, and there is consensus about their value and usefulness. [This] does not mean the knowledge des-cribed should always be applied uniformly to all projects; the organization and/or project management team is responsible for determining what is appropriate for any given project.
So what DOES the PMBOK® Guide offer? Building blocks for project management Best practices Tools and techniques “ Containers” 5 Process Groups: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, Closing 9 Knowledge Areas: Scope, Time, HR, Risk, Communications, Procurement, etc.
Furthermore… There is no prescriptive detail. It is a reference manual for PM, and includes a description of an many of concepts and terms used in the field. The upcoming 4 th edition clearly states: As a foundational reference, this standard is neither complete nor all-inclusive. This standard is a guide rather than a methodology. One can use different methodologies and tools to implement the framework.
