COMS 360 Litke – Topic Exploration Assignment 1
Topic Exploration Assignment 1 requires you to select a topic related to EITHER chapter 3 (women’s
rhetorical movements) OR chapter 4 (men’s rhetorical movements) and to explore that topic in greater
detail. You will begin your exploration by reviewing the related material in chapter 3 or chapter 4 and
then will conduct additional exploration of your topic. You will need to narrow your topic to meet the
requirements of the assignment. Keep in mind that papers must be specifically focused on gender.
This assignment serves to strengthen skills in information competence relative to research and support of
ideas. Consequently, you are required to conduct additional research on your topic. Topic Exploration 1
must include a minimum of three current, scholarly academic sources. For Topic Exploration 1, the
textbook can be included as one of the three minimum required sources but should not be the only source
or the primary source of supporting material for your exploration of your selected topic. For most
papers/topics, “current” would typically mean roughly the last ten years, however, some topics might
warrant older sources. The assignment requires that you locate scholarly or academic sources which will
be the general expectation. However, some topics might be so current that the only available sources
might not be found in scholarly/journal type sources. So, the requirement for current, scholarly, academic
sources could vary given topics selected. All papers require credible sources. Make sure that you have a
minimum of three references; that is a requirement of the assignment.
Requirements and Evaluation:
Once you have a topic related to chapter 3 (women’s rhetorical movements) or chapter 4 (men’s rhetorical
movements, you will need to conduct additional research on your topic. You will summarize what you
have learned in a two (full) page minimum, (and three page, maximum), typed, double spaced 12-point
font, Times New Roman paper, standard 1” margins on all sides (unjustified). Sources must be cited in
text and in a reference list in APA format (see the next page for some guidelines on APA format). Provide
ONLY your name in the upper right corner of your paper. Skip a line, and begin your essay. Do not
include a title, headings, running head, or any other identifying information. This will allow you
maximum space to convey your material. Do not plagiarize ANY PART of your paper.
All papers must be well written, clearly supported, and thoroughly proofread. Papers will be evaluated on
content, quality and depth of research, clarity, organization, citation, style, and format. If you have
questions, please email me.
Length: Expected length is two full pages minimum (three pages, maximum)
Worth: up to 20% of course grade

Analyzing Literature
Paul and Elder (2012) associate three phases with their definition of critical thinking (p. xix):
It analyzes thinking . . . By focusing on the parts of thinking in any situation—its purpose, question, information, inferences, assumptions, concepts, implications, and point of view.
It evaluates thinking . . . By figuring out its strengths and weaknesses: the extent to which it is clear, accurate, precise, relevant, deep, broad, logical, significant, and fair.
It improves thinking . . . By building on its strengths while reducing its weaknesses.
Your Literature Review assignment due this week will apply all of these phases of critical thinking to the scholarly sources you have selected. For this discussion activity, you will select one journal article you have selected for the Literature Review assignment and apply the first phase to analyze the thinking represented in the article:
First, describe the topics for which you researched relevant scholarly articles.
Next, identify one of these articles and explain how it is relevant to your topic.
Then use the
Elements of Thought Discussion Template [DOC]
to analyze the article:
What is the main purpose of the article?
What is the key question the author of the article is addressing?
What is the most important information in the article?
What key conclusions (inferences) did the author of the article come to and present?
What were the most important ideas (concepts) that one would need to understand to understand the author's line of reasoning?
What were the main assumptions (that is, what the author is taking for granted that might be questioned)?
What was the main point of view (that is, the author's perspective) presented in the article?

ENT3103 - Article review (10%) of Assessment 1
An article review format allows scholars or students to analyze and evaluate the work of other experts in a given field. Outside of the education system, experts often review the work of their peers for clarity, originality, and contribution to the discipline of study.
That is a professional paper writing which demands a high level of in-depth analysis and a well-structured presentation of arguments. It is a critical, constructive evaluation of literature in a particular field through summary, classification, analysis, and comparison.
Students should present a clear understanding of the topic you’ve been working on.
The purpose of this writing exercise is for you to learn to seek out information and to write an evaluative review of a journal article.
Writing Involves:
· Summarization, classification, analysis, critiques, and comparison.
· The analysis, evaluation, and comparison require use theories, ideas, and research, relevant to the subject area of the article.
· As you progress with reading your article, organize your thoughts into coherent sections in an outline. As you read, jot down important facts, contributions, or contradictions. Identify the shortcomings and strengths of your publication. Begin to map your outline accordingly.
· Outline your review: Look at your summary to see if the author was clear about each of them. Mark the points that could use some improvement, as well as the ones where the author was clear and accurate and where s/he pointed out something innovative. Then put together the lists of strong points and drawbacks and summarize them. For example, a strong point may be the introduction of new information, and a drawback may be the lack of accuracy in representing the existing knowledge on the topic. Add these outcomes to your study and back them up with evidence from the text of the article.
Answering these questions should facilitate your outline writing:
· What was the goal of the article?
· What theories does the author dwell upon?
· Is the author clear with definitions?
· Is the supportive evidence relevant?
· What is the place of the article in its field of knowledge?
· Does it contribute to the progress in this field?
· Does the author convey his or her thoughts clearly
Using the APA Format

Annotated Bibliography for Aging and Family Dynamics
Overview:
A bibliography is a list of all cited sources in the research paper. In American Psychological
Association (APA) style papers, bibliographies are called “References,” and they consist of
alphabetically ordered lists of sources cited in a paper. The annotated bibliography is a list of
sources with summaries and commentary that you might use to develop a research paper,
literature review, or rely on as part of your discipline’s knowledge base. Annotated
bibliographies are excellent tools for sharing the results of research with peers, and for
demonstrating your own competence reading, interpreting and evaluating the literature in your
discipline or research area.
In this assignment, you will develop a 1,600-1,800-word summary/evaluative annotated
bibliography for five peer reviewed journal articles on a topic related to this class (e.g., elder
abuse, age-related discrimination, aging in place, grandparents caring for their children, caring
for frail elders, etc.). The Human Services Program at FSCJ uses APA style for all research
papers, manuscripts, projects, etc. Note that the APA does not have strict guidelines for the
annotated bibliography. However, this assignment requires you to reference the APA manual for
formatting the following elements:
• Title page
• Abstract
• Citations (in-text, and complete end of text references)
• Headings
• References page
Please be aware that there are many different types of annotated bibliographies—some are
simple lists with one or two descriptive sentences, while others are full paragraphs. We will use
the latter format for this paper. See the provided sample of an Annotated Bibliography.
There are three stages for this assignment. Each stage is graded separately. The instructions,
requirements, and rubrics are provided below. Be sure to refer to the grading rubric for the
specific types of comments you need to include.
Stage 1: Selecting Journal Articles (15 Points)
Instructions:
All articles must come from FSCJ’s databases and must be approved by your instructor.
All must relate to the material covered in this class.
In order to help you locate appropriate sources, please use the Do & Don’t guidelines below:

Essay #4 Engaging in Civic DebatesResearch-based Persuasive Arg.docxSALU18
Essay #4: Engaging in Civic Debates
Research-based Persuasive Argument Essay
Assignment: For this assignment, you will identify an issue hopefully of interest to you that represents a contemporary issue being debated in public discourse. This issue can be at the local, national, or international level. You must research your issue and produce a persuasive argument about it in 6-9 pages (double spaced).
The paper will follow MLA format. The font should be Times New Roman or Cambria 12pt font. You must have a minimum of seven (7) outside sources for this paper, although a strong paper will likely contain many sources beyond this minimum. These sources should cover both sides of this issue and attention should be paid to the credibility and degree of ideological bias/affiliation of the publication source. You should strive to include at least two (2) scholarly journal articles as part of your sources. This paper will follow the model of the formal argument essays studied in class and will contain a literature review, rebuttal of the opposing arguments (including concessions as needed), additional research & arguments that will support your side of the argument, as well as effective introductory and concluding sections/paragraphs. The paper will be drafted and reviewed in various sections prior to final submission (see due dates below).
Through various assignments you will begin to stage the development of your essay and situate your argument within a larger conversation, including engaging with audiences whose stance on the issue may differ from your own. The Annotated Bibliography (see separate handout) will allow you to familiarize yourself with various perspectives and arguments surrounding this issue and the Literature Review (see separate handout) will provide you with the opportunity to show your understanding of the larger context surrounding this debate (while also developing effective synthesis writing techniques). Next, the Rebuttal Paper (see separate handout) will provide a space for you to specifically address and respond to the arguments made by the opposition. These various essays will become the two major “sections” of your final Research Paper, accompanied by an effective introduction and conclusion and an additional body section devoted to additional arguments that may convince a reader that your stance on this issue is correct.

Article: is uploaded
1). Psychological Purpose
This paper serves several purposes, the first of which is helping you gain insight into research papers in psychology. As this may be your first time reading and writing papers in psychology, one goal of Paper I is to give you insight into what goes into such papers. This article critique paper will help you learn about the various sections of an empirical research report by reading at least
one
peer-reviewed articles (articles that have a Title Page, Abstract*, Literature Review, Methods Section, Results Section, and References Page—I have already selected some articles for you to critique, so make sure you only critique one in the folder provided on Canvas) This paper will also give you some insights into how the results sections are written in APA formatted research articles. Pay close attention to those sections, as throughout this course you’ll be writing up some results of your own!
In this relatively short paper, you will read one of five articles posted on Canvas and summarize what the authors did and what they found. The first part of the paper should focus on summarizing the design the authors used for their project. That is, you will identify the independent and dependent variables, talk about how the authors carried out their study, and then summarize the results (you don’t need to fully understand the statistics in the results, but try to get a sense of what the authors did in their analyses). In the second part of the paper, you will critique the article for its methodological strengths and weaknesses. Finally, in part three, you will provide your references for the Article Critique Paper in APA format.
2). APA Formatting Purpose
The second purpose of the Article Critique paper is to teach you proper American Psychological Association (APA) formatting. In the instructions below, I tell you how to format your paper using APA style. There are a lot of very specific requirements in APA papers, so pay attention to the instructions below as well as the APA style powerpoint on Canvas. We are using the 7th edition of the APA style manual.
3). Writing Purpose
Finally, this paper is intended to help you grow as a writer. Few psychology classes give you the chance to write papers and receive feedback on your work. This class will! We will give you feedback on this paper in terms of content, spelling, and grammar.
Article Critique Paper (60 points possible)
Each student is required to write an article critique paper based on one of the research articles present on Canvas only those articles listed on Canvas can be critiqued – if you critique a different article, it will not be graded). If you are unclear about any of this information, please ask.
What is an article critique paper?
An article critique is a written communication that conveys your understanding of a research article and how it relates to the conceptual issues of interest to this course.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
