This document discusses student engagement in online learning. It defines student engagement as having three dimensions: behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. Behavioral engagement focuses on student participation, emotional engagement on students' feelings about their learning community, and cognitive engagement on investment in learning concepts. The document then presents six methods to increase student engagement: preparing students for online learning; presenting clear, organized materials; increasing instructor presence; chunking and spacing learning; having students demonstrate learning; and providing regular feedback. It also summarizes opposing views in the famous Clark-Kozma debate about whether media influences learning or is just a delivery method.
