2. The PLG’s Origin
Progressive Librarians Guild was formed in New
York City on January 1990 by a group of librarians
concerned with our profession's rapid drift into
dubious alliances with business and the information
industry, and into complacent acceptance of service
to an unquestioned political, economic and cultural
status quo.

3. What Does The PLG Stand For?
• Providing a forum for the open
exchange of progressive views on
library issues.
• Supporting progressive and
democratic library activities
locally, nationally and internationally.
• Supporting librarians as they act to
effect changes in their own libraries.
• Bridging the gaps between
school, public, academic and special
libraries, and between public and
technical services.
• Encouraging debate about strategies
adopted from the business
world, democratic forms of library
administration, and unity between
librarians and other library workers.
• Considering the impact of
technology in the library, on library
services, and on public discourse.
• Considering the ethics of
librarianship from a social
responsibility perspective.
• Facilitating networking between
progressive librarians and other
professional and scholarly groups
dealing with communications as
well as global

5. UA-PLG’s Purpose
To promote interest in library student
activism and awareness from a progressive
viewpoint in regards to issues affecting the
freedom of information and social responsibility.
To provide fellowship among library students and
alumni, faculty, and working librarians, as well as
the community.
The UA Student Chapter of PLG will also
strive to "operate within the spirit of socially
responsible activist librarianship that PLG works
to embody", as stated in the PLG parent
organization statement of purpose.
