Status of Non-Government Secondary School Libraries in Bangladesh: A SurveyZakir Hossain/ICS, Zurich
The focus of this survey is to investigate the status of secondary school libraries in Bangladesh. From the online survey, 91 responses were received. In general, the survey revealed that a significant number of secondary schools have a school library but lack of reading materials and inadequate funding are common. Most of the school libraries provide traditional services such as book lending, in-house book and newspaper reading and only a few have ICT facilities and services, for example, computer, internet and online catalogue search. The finding of this survey has original value and suggestions may help to resolve issues that may adversely impact school library development in Bangladesh.

Abstract: Academic librarians’ support of open access publishing initiatives has enhanced library collections, research innovation and the visibility of institutions’ output. Many have paid less attention, however, to educating university students about open access resources. Drawing on exemplary promotional efforts, this poster describes ways that Canadian academic librarians might ensure students know about open access resources and understand their potential uses and limitations, from actively participating in Open Access Week to integrating open access topics into instruction sessions and beyond. During the poster session, information about recent developments in the open access movement in Canada will also be made available.

At the conclusion of the program, participants will share their suggestions with the larger group. (These ideas will form the nucleus of a Wiki resource that librarians can use for furthering diversity efforts.)

Diversity Residency Programs provide professional opportunities to recent MLS graduates from underrepresented communities in librarianship. Residents have spearheaded innovative approaches to support the diversity mission of the institution and library through internal and external initiatives. Hear from current and previous residents who have developed outreach initiatives and diversity programming highlighting ethnicity and multiculturalism at four academic libraries as they share recommendations for developing, implementing, and sustaining similar projects at other institutions. Outreach and programs include developing relationships with diversity departments and local communities, holding events to celebrate diverse cultures and ethnicities, and looking internally at institutional resources to support diversity. Communities as Authority: Strengthening Ilokano and Amianan Studies Materials...N. Marie
Presentation at the Nakem Conferences in December 2012, located at San Fernando, La Union, Philippines. The presentation focuses on ways libraries can expand its collection on Ilokano and Amianan materials. [per conference guidelines, presentation was limited to 10 slides]
Although library collaboration is common and many libraries collaborate through many organizations, it is a relatively unexamined aspect of library work. Many descriptions exist, but little from the point of view of organization and motivation. We will present a framework for thinking about library collaboration and draw out some of the challenges successful collaborations face. We will also consider how collaboration is evolving and how trends may be accelerated. We will emphasize that collaboration is a set of strategic and tactical choices, that it is very influenced by people and politics, and that collective action poses problems.
These dynamics are very much alive in questions around collective collections. We will look at collections as an example of the consolidation vs autonomy dynamic we observe in consortia generally. We also try and provide some guidance about how a collective collections initiative would be shaped – to identify points where decisions and commitments need to be made. We consider retrospective collection coordination (digitization, resource sharing, shared print) which currently tends to be layered over relatively autonomously developed collections, optimized at the institutional level, and prospective collection development (where libraries work together to optimize at the system level through collaborative collection development, licensing and so on). We consider some different dynamics with licensed and purchased materials, as well as institutionally created materials (research outputs, …).

The landscape of academic research has changed rapidly in the past decade, with access to high-performance networks, and the focus on data-intensive and interdisciplinary scholarship. Research libraries in North America are developing new services and programs aimed at meeting scholars’ needs for data-intensive, and interdisciplinary research support. Examples of some emerging programs include:
• Supporting digital research (graphical information systems, digital humanities, survey research methodologies, working with large datasets)
• Educating users about copyright and author rights
• Supporting content-creation and publishing activities in numerous ways: institutional repository to store and host works, establishing maker spaces, and developing infrastructure and workflows for more formal library-located publishing efforts
• Collaboration with research offices to educate researchers about federal mandates for open access publications and datasets
• Establishment of data management and archival resources
• Partnering with third-party vendors and with consortia to achieve scale-efficiencies and facilitate impact
• Development of researcher information management systems to support collaboration, discovery, and reporting
We present a case study of the development of a suite of new tools and services at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign within its newly established Office of Research to support digital scholarship and to provide sustained and broad access to research. We will also discuss the significant challenges and opportunities of library/campus partnerships for cyberinfrastructure and research support.
