1. Production concepts
During my questionnaire I found that one of the more favoured options of sub-genre was
zombie horror. For that reason my first production concept is for a zombie horror, for which I
have gathered ideas from films/ programmes such as, “the walking dead”, George Romero’s
“dead” films such as “dawn of the dead” and “diary of the dead”. (…)
Zombie Horror Concept
Back story: A group of survivors have come together through different circumstances. Despite hard
times and great difficulty the survivors struggle to continue in a post-apocalyptic world that has
crumbled around them. Uniting as a group is the only way to survive long
enough to reach a location only known as the “safe haven”.
Setting: Ideal settings for this genre are places such as, burnt out buildings in an
overgrown wilderness, a corn field, Train station and a town. These places are
within the surrounding area and are therefore easy to use and feature in my
production.
Props: The main use of props will be for “weaponry” i.e. foam/plastic weapons.
Costume: Due to this being a production set in a post-apocalyptic world, ideal
clothing for the “survivors” would be casual, worn clothing that is maybe a bit dirty/ scruffy to
promote the idea that they have been worn over a period of time. The clothing worn by those who
are “zombies” will need to be partially torn and burnt/ or degraded to again encourage the idea that
this has been over a lengthy period of time.
Lighting: The lighting of the production is heavily based on the setting as most of it is outside so as a
way of creating the illusion that everyone is threatened I will need to use low-key lighting and would
therefore need to film around dusk. The main lighting will be low-key and as a way of keeping things
visible torches and candles would also need to be used and this again helps
create the illusion of a world that has fallen apart.
Make up: the make-up of the survivors is going to need to be dirty and
grimy to create the illusion of having no time to keep clean. The make-up
of the zombies however will need to be bloody and their skin will also need
to be pale.
Camerawork: The camera shots that are mainly going to be used in my production are high / low
angle shots, close-ups, longshots, handheld shots and canted angles. The use of these camera shots
is common in horror and when creating my production these should help me in creating a believable
(despite the sub-genre) product.
Sound: The use of sound in my product will depend on what is happening in the particular scene.
Non-diegetic sound in my product will mainly be uninviting and fast paced to create the illusion of
fear. Diegetic sounds in this product would be things such as snarling, screaming, groaning and
crying.
2. Production concepts
(…) I also found that my target audience liked the comedy sub-genre of horror, for that
reason I have created a production concept based around this. Using films such as “tucker
and dale vs. evil”, “Shaun of the dead” and “scary movie” to get ideas from.
Comedy horror concept
Back story: A small group of friends (students) move into a shared house. The house however, has a
horrific past that is unknown to them. The horrifying past only comes to light when a series of
strange events begin to unfold on the unsuspecting victims.
Setting: the ideal setting for something like this would be a house and back garden or the settings of
the characters daily lives as this will create a sense of realism to the product.
Props: The props are dependent on the events that occur but a range of props would be used.
Costume: The costume worn by the students would be casual clothing, making them relatable to a
range of audiences.
Lighting: High/low key lighting will be used depending on the setting
Make-up: Natural make-up
Camerawork: As this is still a horror product the camerawork used needs to show this. The types of
camerawork I have chosen to heavily feature in the product are close ups, high/low angle shots,
longshots, handheld shots and wide shots.
Sound: the sound that I would have in this product would be, fast paced non-diegetic sound,
screaming and laughing. Laughter will be used in places to help strengthen the idea of comedy.
