2. Week 1/2 , research and initial plans
For the first two weeks of the project I have completed the research and initial plans power points.
For the first week we concentrated on completing our research, and starting our initial plans. I
found completing the research power point was very interesting and I enjoyed researching different
magazines how different magazine brands produce they’re magazines. The research is a very
important part of the project because it is where we find inspiration for our own project, we start
appreciating the different aspects a successful magazine includes. Through the research I learnt how
according to their target audience the magazine would use different tools to attract their specific
audience. E.g. the feminist magazine used bright colours to entice a younger audience, the fashion
magazine used bold colours and fonts. To improve my work, I could off have researched another
magazine for more variety.
Completing the initial plans power point took me longer then I expected. This is because I took too
much time creating my mind map, although the mind map is important because it’s a space to write
all my ideas so I can use the best ideas for my project, however I write in too much detail about
ideas that I know I’m not going to take any further. This wastes time as even though it looks good in
my initial plans power point it doesn’t help me with my final product. Once I had decided what I was
going to do for my final project I started to create my mood board. Knowing what I was going to do
made it easier to create the mood board because I could research different articles about the same
topic and find how they have displayed their articles and different inspiration I can take from them.
3. Week 3/4, pre production and
proposal
The third week I finalizing all my ideas and decided what I wanted our final product to look like.
The week before was spent generating ideas so that we would have concrete plans this week, so
that after half term I could start producing my magazine. I started the week by writing my
proposal, this wasn't very time consuming because I already knew the basis of my magazine, so I
could easily write about it. It was a simple task but after having to do a proposal for every project
and having to answer the same questions is quite repetitive. I think my pre-production
PowerPoint was successful, however it isn't very detailed, this is because I concentrated more on
the visual aspects of it instead of the writing. Obviously, I have also included enough writing to
explain the images and to explain my thought process through the different pre-production
stages, I just focused on planning what I wanted my magazine to look like.
My pre-production has been a massive help to my final product because through the style sheet
slide I was able to design my front cover and double page spread with a clearer vision of what I
wanted. Also, planning where I wanted to put my photos and articles through the flat plans was
very useful because when I got into the production stage I knew exactly where to put everything.
On my blog there is a few PowerPoint that are missing, there are two power points missing on my
most recent project but they are nearly completed and I only need to upload them, however in
my 4th project for video games I have uploaded my production experiments PowerPoint but I
haven't uploaded my production experiments because I thought including them in the
PowerPoint would be enough, so because it’s been a number of weeks since I created the
production experiments and I've moved my work around multiple computers I'm finding it
difficult to find the experiments to upload.
4. Week 5, production
Week 5 was the week we started production, what the past 4 weeks of planning was leading up to, I
started by creating the front cover, we used photoshop and I decided where on the page to place the
headings and the front cover photo. I started of the cover with headings around the page, instead of using
basic fonts that were provided with photoshop I used a website called ‘dafonts’ where I could easily find a
range of different fonts which suited different styles of text, for example you could search ‘sophisticated’
or ‘delicate’ or ‘cartoon’ and find hundreds of relevant fonts. I chose three different fonts to include on the
cover, ‘Lemon Milk’ (Source C) , ‘Bebas Neue’ (Source B) and ‘Vogue’ ( Source C). I chose these fonts
because they were all strong, bold texts which goes against the stereotype of girly fonts, e.g. ‘girly’ ( source
D).

Then I went and conducted a multiple photoshoots. I took
photos for the front cover photo and the slower ice cube
tray article. At first I had planned to have the main photo in
a circle shape in the middle of the page to show an artsy
original side , however after moving it around I decided it
looked better taking up the whole page. I also moved
around headings and got rid of bulky boxes giving the
magazine a more sleek and stylish look.
I circled the differences using different colours to show the
changes I made during the production.
5. After the front cover was completed I started making my double page spread, I started by writing the articles so
that I knew what I needed to take photos of to match them appropriately. Once I knew I was going to write
articles about Lush and their campaign with animal testing I went into the shop and spoke to a women about
all the things Lush do to help, she was very helpful and gave me a lot of information to include. After the
discussion I took photos of the store to include in my double page spread. I wanted to use an interesting font
for the text on the double page spread, but this would’ve taken too long and could’ve made it difficult for the
reader to read so I decided to go for a basic font, however I did go on the same website ‘dafonts.com’ and
searched for the Stand out Lush font, which I found and was able to include it in the sub headings across the
pages. After that, for the final touch I included a background which looks like paint painted on a white screen
with a makeup brush, which is innkeeping with the theme of testing makeup and cosmetics on animals.
After this I had some spare time so decided to start creating a contents page. I knew I wouldn’t be able to finish
it but I thought it could be an opportunity to show how the magazine would of styled more sheets.
