1. Production log
Front Cover
The first step of the production process was creating a suitable masthead for my magazine. I
wanted to choose a title which would be memorable but also short and very simple. I also
had to consider my target audience when making this choice because the magazine needs
to be appeal to them. I did some research of common words used in the indie rock genre so
I could relate my magazine to the fans of this particular genre of music. I decided to choose
the word “riff” because it was short and simple but more importantly it was a word that is
very common amongst the target audience. The word means a short melodic or rhythmic
pattern that is repeated over and over while changes take place in the music played along
with it.
When I designed the masthead I knew the colour scheme I was using which was white, red
and black but I was unsure with the font style. I experimented with many different fonts and
eventually decided to use Eras Bold because I believe my magazine needs a bold masthead
like all front covers to stand out
amongst other magazines. The
background of the masthead is
coloured black so that there is a
contrast between the black and
white which will help the Masthead stand out. I then added the sponge filter to the
background to create an aesthetically pleasing effect. I then overlapped the Masthead with
another layer which was also coloured white to make them look atached.
Then I chose one of the several photos that I had
taken on my camera. I chose to use an extreme close
up on the front cover because I wanted the subjects
face to take up most of the front cover. I used the
quick selection tool to select just the subjects face
without the back ground. I then fixed it up with the
lasso tool to get rid of the small remaining parts of
background colour.
I then added the important conventions to the
magazine such as the coverlines and captions. I used
the text tool to type up a few captions and placed
them in random places around the main image.

2. Production log
Once I had finished editing the main image, masthead and
captions I added a few minor details to make it look like a
typical magazine. For instance, I addded a bar code near
the bottom right corner of the page because this where
most magazines have them. I also added a price in the top
right corner which is also typical of most magazines.
Contents page
Once the front cover was complete I then moved on to the next step which was to create a
contents page for the magazine. The first step was the design and layout of the page. It is
was vitaly important that the main colour scheme
satyed the
same to keep
the content of the magazine consistent. It also makes
the magazine appear more proffessional which is
important because the target audience will appreciate it
more. I have kept the font size and style the same and
will continue to do so throughout the magazine.
The next step in the production process involved chosing
the appropriate content to include in the magazine and
displaying it on the page. I again used the same font as I
did previously to keep it’s consistency. I divided the
contents into 4 sections; News, Reviews, Live and
Features.
