Building a Product from Scratch to Compete in the Market Top 10Product School
The document summarizes Chris Graham's talk on building HYFN8 from scratch to becoming a top 10 social media advertising and management platform. It describes how HYFN8 started as a digital agency, transitioned to focus on mobile when native apps emerged, and slowly gained traction with clients by running their advertising. As it grew from a few clients generating $200k in 2013 to over 60 employees and $4.5M in revenue in 2014, HYFN8 scaled its operations and partnered with major social media platforms. It was eventually acquired by Nexstar in 2016 and now aims to further differentiate its technology to solidify its top 10 market position over the next 5 years.
In this presentation, I describe how we, as designers, can start to have more impact and influence in our businesses. Using a combination of research, analysis, vision and product-thinking to surface new opportunities and drive the right outcomes for our customers; in service of the business.

Startup vs Corporate Products by Oracle's Director of ProductProduct School
What to expect and not to expect when you are working for a small company vs. a multi-billion dollar company as a Product Manager. All things considered, what will you learn and where will you have more fun doing what you like to do as a Product Manager.
Managing a project involves defining its scope, determining available resources, checking the timeline, assembling the project team, listing major and minor steps, developing a preliminary plan, creating a baseline plan, documenting changes, and keeping stakeholders informed of progress and problems. Leading a project focuses on results and productivity rather than time, aligning people with work they are good at and passionate about, putting best performers on biggest opportunities, finding a balance between aggressive and realistic goals, trusting employees, making employees think rather than providing all answers, and building consensus by explaining why.
Product Management Success Guide with Shutterfly’s former Director of PMProduct School
Former Director of Product Management at Shutterly, Mike Goos, talked about how you can define your role on the product team and perform a personal gap analysis.
He also discussed how you can take ownership while not stepping on toes by scoring yourself on the 4 pillars of product management: marketing, business, technical and communication style. He gave recommendations for helpful tools and supplemental training.
The document outlines a strategic planning and execution process. It emphasizes the importance of proper planning and execution to achieve goals. It recommends developing a multi-year vision and quarterly operational plans with assigned tasks, deadlines, and accountability measures to monitor progress. Key steps include researching capabilities and needs, appointing drivers for each part of the plan, committing to the process, and hosting "sunset meetings" to review progress and keep the plan on track. The overall goal is to create structure, accountability and habits to successfully deliver on strategic objectives.
The document provides 10 strategies for business planning: 1) Start with an idea and write it as a concept, 2) Test the concept's viability, 3) Decide why you need a business plan for investment, development, or as a roadmap, 4) Consider including key components like financial projections in the plan, 5) Be honest and avoid lies that undermine credibility, 6) Avoid assumptions that don't make sense, 7) Ensure the plan is worth the funding requested, and 8) Write an executive summary that sells the full plan. The overall message is that a business plan is a plan for the business, not the actual business.

Sumbry (Airbnb) - If You Build It, They Might ComeTechsylvania
1) The author discusses lessons learned from his own startup failures and successes. His early success was due to co-founders with complementary skills, while later failures resulted from a lack of focus on execution, strategy, and team structure.
2) He explains that every organization needs both a "dreamer" focused on vision and a "operator" focused on execution. For the author, he realized he was more of a dreamer and needed to find an operator role.
3) Good team design is intentional, with clear roles and processes. Teams should have diversity of skills, experiences, and backgrounds to fill gaps and produce better outcomes than any single individual.

Jevgeni Kabanov (Bolt) - Value-led GrowthTechsylvania
Jevgeni Kabanov discusses value-led growth and focusing on a company's value proposition. He argues that companies should focus on a few highly meaningful hard and soft value metrics rather than many poorly measurable ones. For ride-hailing, the value proposition of pooling rides seemed good but in reality it led to longer wait times, worse experiences, and strained unit economics. Understanding a company's true value proposition compared to competitors is important for areas like new products, verticals, and assessing necessary pricing discounts needed to make up for lacking features. Value-led growth creates good trade-offs around priorities like growth spending versus innovation.

This document discusses managing quality on projects. It explains that quality should be defined by end users, not those doing the work. It also outlines the three main stages of managing project quality: 1) Planning and defining quality by establishing standards upfront, 2) Undertaking quality assurance to meet the plan, and 3) Controlling quality throughout the project by monitoring and testing. Quality management aims to satisfy user needs and prevent defects. A quality plan should engage stakeholders and describe how quality requirements will be achieved.

This document provides guidance on strategic roadmap planning. It emphasizes that the most important part of roadmapping is setting the product vision and strategic goals through top-down planning before building the roadmap. Finish Line Product Development Services offers product development services to help small companies reliably manufacture prototypes at a reasonable cost. They recommend: 1) conducting design verification testing with an independent engineering team to identify issues; 2) ensuring documentation is complete for manufacturing; and 3) doing field testing with customers to identify early issues that can be addressed before large-scale production. Finish Line has experience helping over 300 small companies through the prototype to production process.
Different ways to pay for product development presentationSteve Owens
Sometimes it is just as important to know what not to do as it is to know what to do. Ignoring Product Development will result in your business going away.
If you ignore it, it will go Away (Product Development)Steve Owens
Sometimes it is just as important to know what not to do as it is to know what to do. Ignoring Product Development will result in your business going away.
Product Development and Company CultureSteve Owens
Product development requires taking risks and making mistakes are an inherent part of the process. Unlike other business functions that repeat tasks, product development requires creating something new which often involves many failed attempts for every success. A culture that understands mistakes as learning opportunities, but still holds teams accountable is important. Teams should analyze what went wrong on less successful attempts and implement corrective actions to improve future outcomes while still encouraging risk-taking needed for innovation.
Design verification testing in a small companySteve Owens
Design verification testing (DVT) proves that a product meets requirements by testing prototypes built using production processes and facilities. DVT involves testing each requirement through corresponding tests, such as inspecting prototypes to verify functional and mechanical requirements, testing performance and accounting for tolerances, and conducting environmental testing at limits to verify environmental requirements. Reliability is typically verified through highly accelerated life testing or environmental qualification testing, while compliance involves third party testing for standards such as FCC, UL, and CE. Completing DVT helps ensure a product is ready for full production.
Decision making is fundamental to any professional activity. The study of “decision bias” is a fascinating subject. These studies show that the root cause of most faulty decision making is a wrong assumption.
One of the most common faulty assumptions in the product development world is that the development budget and time is an obvious thing. This assumption leads to a world of trouble
A Requirements Document (RD) is the first step to creating a great product. Because it is the first step, a RD has the greatest leverage of all product development activities. A small error in the direction at this stage can make a big difference in were the product ultimately ends up.
Finish Line Product development Process-2018Steve Owens
This document discusses product development for small companies. It begins by defining key terms like product, development, and process. It then outlines common myths and truths about product development. Some myths include thinking ideas can't be stolen or that outsourcing will be cheapest. Truths include having realistic budgets and schedules and that ideas must be proven to make money before others will steal them. The document then details the key stages of the product development process used by Finish Line PDS, including requirements documentation, conceptual design, detail design, testing, and pilot production. It stresses the importance of following a process to avoid failure and going over budget or timeline.
There are two main approaches to product development - the "just do it" method and the "slow and methodical" method. The "just do it" approach focuses on quickly prototyping ideas, while the "slow and methodical" approach emphasizes careful planning and analysis. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages depending on the type of product and market. Lean startups benefit more from rapid prototyping, while mature markets do better taking a slower, more planned approach. Most successful projects combine elements from both ends of this continuum.
Different ways to pay for product development presentationSteve Owens
Different Ways to Pay for Product Development
There are many more ways to pay for product development than you may realize, including not paying for it at all. What is right for your situation will depend on your exact circumstances. You may wish to review the following before starting your next product development project
The prototype is all done and it seems to work well. Now, how do you get the prototype manufactured reliably and at a reasonable cost? If you're like a lot of small companies, this is not something you do all the time. Finish Line has done more than one thousand projects for more than 250 small companies and we have learned a few things in the process.
Have you ever wondered why some product development projects run
like clockwork and others are train wrecks? One reason some projects
succeed while others do not is the failure to differentiate between what
new aspects of the project will require invention as opposed to
engineering. Engineering is, for the most part, predictable and lends

Top 10 reasons why product development projects failSteve Owens
The sole purpose of product development is to generate a positive return on investment. Consequently, it is interesting to note that more than 70% of product development projects fail to produce a positive return on investment. Product Development is risky and always requires some trial and error. However, great companies continuously improve, and product development is certainly an area where opportunities for improvement abound. It is important to treat product development failures the same as other challenges in business. It is essential to understand what went wrong, why it went wrong and what can be done to prevent it from going wrong next time.
Finish Line has often been engaged to assist clients with projects that had failed or were failing. As a result, we encountered the same mistakes repeated over-and-over again. The following is our top ten list of why product development fails:

Harnessing WebAssembly for Real-time Stateless Streaming PipelinesChristina Lin
Traditionally, dealing with real-time data pipelines has involved significant overhead, even for straightforward tasks like data transformation or masking. However, in this talk, we’ll venture into the dynamic realm of WebAssembly (WASM) and discover how it can revolutionize the creation of stateless streaming pipelines within a Kafka (Redpanda) broker. These pipelines are adept at managing low-latency, high-data-volume scenarios.
Embedded machine learning-based road conditions and driving behavior monitoringIJECEIAES
Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.
