6. idea
Conceptual
thinking
As the future is still far away
and what is envisioned
often goes beyond what is
well known today, the
product opportunity is
expressed as intersections
between segments
Idea phase

8. Idea phase
The intersection between segments
becomes identifiers for a future (potential
product), a product identifier that can hold
a time series of demand & availability

9. Master data to support One plan planning in
the idea phase
•
•Formal & governed segmentation
models
•One repository for segmentation

•Cross organizational sharing of those
segmentation models
•Cross organizational agreement on the
intersections

Project phase
In the project phase, the ”project”
becomes the indentifier for a future
(potential product), an identifier that can
hold a time series of demand & availability

17. Project phase
The central object in the project phase is (no
surprise..) the ”project”. The project is a
constellation to execute tasks to realise either a final
delivery or some delivery needed to reach that final
delivery. In planning the ”project” is often percieved
as equal to a future product (the deliverable).
This practice makes perfect sense when there really is
a ”one to one” relationship but is in conflict with
aspirations of modularity and reuse where a
deliverable will be used to fulfill many ideas.

18. Project phase
The segment intersection used in the idea phase
need to transition to be expressed as projects.
”This project will realise the segmentintersection
”XXXYYY”

19. Project phase
The transition from segment intersection to project is no
challenge as long as there is a one to one relationship between
the segmentationmodel and the project. The challenge arises
when many projects realise the same segmentintersection or
when several segmentintersections are realised through one
project. This situation must be considered already when defining
the intersections in the idea phase.
Challenge : If a one to one state can not be achieved, how can
splits be defined & maintained?

20. Master data to support One plan planning in
the project phase
•
•Formal link to the segmentation model
(Idea phase)
•One repository for project definition (”a
project portfolio master”)
•Cross organizational /cross process
sharing of the project definition
•Cross organizational/cross process
agreement on relation to Idea and design
phase, possibly including splits
