2021…. cross functional Supply Chain Control Towers are a big
topic.
A lot of things need to work better together now than they have ever
needed to work together before
Lets play around with “BI”, “SaaS” and “Planning” from that…..
3. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
Way back in time, there where no
computers (!)
Organizations processed information using
paper.
“Visibility” and “Decisions” was what a
fewmanagers had and took.
Monitor, Evaluate and
Orchestrate were slow
activities. No one talked about “information
being the new oil”
4. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
Then, a few computers
entered and started supporting a
selected tasks in some processes !
5. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
That worked out fine…
Computers soon found a niche
spot in all processes
6. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
Computers where present
in every process but
disconnected
from each other.
7. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
So internal networks
were set up to connect them
8. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
Then came the question : “how to
consolidatethat datato
support decision making”. The
solution was called “Business
Intelligence” and used
“Data warehousing
technologies” for compiling data.
A lot of plumbing….
9. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
The model was very structured.
“Extract”, “Transform”, “Load”.
But it grew complicated,
complex and
unmanageable as more
processes used more application in
more computers in more places.
-More places to extract from
-More data to transform
-More loads to coordinate
A lot of energy spent trying to provide
retroactive visibility through tools
residing outside the process flow
10. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
Some applications started to offer
“In application BI”
using data that was already available
inside the application, data that
covers the specific process domain
the application supported. “In app
BI” provided a quicker,
more integratedway to
get real time insights
but only within the process coverage
of the application
11. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
Some started listening to
the integration bus, to
capture real time insight directly from
the transaction flow as it travelled
between applications but that
required placing a lot of
process knowledge
and a lot of data in the
integration bus.
12. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
With the introduction of SaaS,
applications moved from residing
within the company to residing
in the cloud.
Moving to cloud based SaaS also
consolidated
processes into fewer and
more distinct applications.
13. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
With processes running in
SaaS applications in the cloud,
how to create overview?
-Traditional consolidation into
BI & data warehouses , “Data
lakes”?
Repeat : A lot of
plumbing….
“Extract”, “Transform”, “Load”
comes with a lot of work
14. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
“In app BI”? Provides real
time data straight out “in
memory”storage. Realtime
eventsfrom each process
presented in their process
context. Immediate business
feedback, immediate business action,
nolong “Extract, Transform, Load”
chains. Speed, but in one
process at a time

2021, Supply Chain Control Towers
need consolidation
without loosing detail.
Jumping in and out
of SaaS applications isn´t
good enough.
“new improved” BI isn´t
good enough either.
16. ECSCIA, European Centre of Supply Chain Information
Architecture
Planningneeds to step up and
take on a consolidating
rolesupporting: “See together”,
“Know together”, “Act together”.
Planning can Act where
BItraditionally only supports
“See” and “Know”.
The planning tool, running
in SaaS is where the supply chain control
tower Sees, Knows and Acts upon events
from all processes in real time.
