A lot of things need to work better together now than they have ever
needed to work together before
Lets play around with “BI”, “SaaS” and “Planning” from that…..

Way back in time, there where no
computers (!)
Organizations processed information using
paper.
“Visibility” and “Decisions” was what a
fewmanagers had and took.
Monitor, Evaluate and
Orchestrate were slow
activities. No one talked about “information
being the new oil”

Then, a few computers
entered and started supporting a
selected tasks in some processes !

Computers soon found a niche

Then came the question : “how to

support decision making”. The
solution was called “Business
Intelligence” and used
“Data warehousing
technologies” for compiling data.
A lot of plumbing….

The model was very structured.
“Extract”, “Transform”, “Load”.
But it grew complicated,
complex and
unmanageable as more
processes used more application in
more computers in more places.
-More places to extract from
-More data to transform
-More loads to coordinate
A lot of energy spent trying to provide
retroactive visibility through tools
residing outside the process flow

Some applications started to offer
“In application BI”
using data that was already available
inside the application, data that
covers the specific process domain
the application supported. “In app
BI” provided a quicker,
more integratedway to
get real time insights
but only within the process coverage
of the application

Some started listening to
the integration bus, to
capture real time insight directly from
the transaction flow as it travelled
between applications but that
required placing a lot of
process knowledge
and a lot of data in the
integration bus.

With the introduction of SaaS,
applications moved from residing
within the company to residing
in the cloud.
Moving to cloud based SaaS also
consolidated
processes into fewer and
more distinct applications.
