Harlem renaissance was an explosion of culture, art, and music that primarily took
place in urban areas in the Northeast and Midwest of the united states.in the 1920 s

had a great impact on the Harlem Renaissance. Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong

Development of Agricultural Tools and Machines
Development of Agricultural Tools and Machines
The development of machines began in the 1890 s when the first steam tractor
and combine were made in California (Meij 3). There was a need to make more
efficient use of the labor; therefore, machines were developed ( Agripedia 2). By
1914, the combine started to spread outside of California to the rest of the United
States (Meij 4). Then in 1928 it spread to Great Britain and then to the Netherlands
after World War II (Meij 4). The development of these machines was affected by
long run price variation (Meij 4). When prices of grains were high, there were
demands for ploughs, seed drills, cultivators, reapers, winnowing machines and others
(Meij 5). After 1912, there was a shift from steam ... Show more content on

The land owners saved money by not having to pay as many labor workers (Meij
43). After all the tools and machines were created, people realized that the intention
of farming was to produce food at the lowest price to the customer and therefore at
the highest level of productivity per acre, per man, and per unit of equipment
(Meij 52). To meet this high productivity level on smaller farms the equipment had
to be made smaller (Meij 52). Western Germany developed a great range of small
tractors for this purpose (Meij 53). In addition, small farms depended on second
hand machinery as a source of equipment (Meij 54). There were also machines that
could be joint owned or hired from contractors (Meij 56). These modifications had to
be created for small farms in Europe. These time consuming modifications caused
difficulties with rapid mechanization among Europe s small farms.
Circumstances for Mechanization in the United States
As a result of mechanization, the American farmer became on of the world s most
productive agriculturists (Meij 65). In addition, mechanization provided to the
pleasure and welfare of farm families and to activiness of the labor supply (Meij 65).
Mechanization in the United States began during World War I, when there was a
shortage of food (Meij 73). This called forth tractors, motor trucks, combines, corn
pickers, hay loaders, and tillage
Food Controversy
Food Controversy In the food industry there have been many issues and processes
that have brought a large amount of question to the industry overall, like the meat
packing process in its early stages. I can t think of a more heated issue in the last
few passing years then the controversy over Genetically modified organisms in the
food industry. Some countries are for it some are against it. Many sides will argue
that genetically mutated organisms (GMO) are bad for the food industry while
others will argue the opposite. While genetically mutate organisms have proved to
provide many positive uses on today s earth the question still remains the same are
GMO s good for us, the environment, or at all. Also if they yield more negative...

Now say this crop began to grow outside of where it was intended. Possibly the
seeds spread to somewhere unintended. Now we have a super crop that is
beginning to invade different parts of the already functional ecosystem in the
surrounding area. These super crops would begin to take over the already existing
species of corn, possibly wiping out the indigenous variety completely. This
hypothetical situation I just described is actually quite similar to what actually
occurred in Mexico in 2002. (Charles Clover) GMO corn crops actually crossed the
border into Mexico and weaseled its way into their southern corn crops. About
1,876 seedlings from indigenous varieties of corn from different areas in the
country were analyzed by scientists. Of these seedlings 95 percent found traces of a
gene from the cauliflower mosaic virus, which was used as a sort of on switch to
invoke insecticidal or herbicidal properties on the GMO corn crops created in the
United States. This contamination averaged 10 to 15 percent and reached a peak
of 35 percent of the rural farmers crops cross pollinated with the GMO strain.
These crops spread with such speed that this problem was unpredictable. Along with
the possibility of GMO crops spreading and taking over other strains of the crop
GMO s can also affect different species of insects in the area potentially destroying

We Were One By Patrick K. O Donnell
1.In as few words as possible, what is this book about? The book is called WE
WERE ONE written by Patrick K. O Donnell, a historian that wanted ...to do
something, and in some small way, out of patriotism, make a difference. (pg. 219, O
Donnell.) He wanted to record the stories of those fighting in the Battle of Fallujah,
but to do so he experienced the battle shoulder to shoulder with the Marines. The
author of this book starts off by explaining how Lima Company s First Platoon
started. Fresh new boots out of the SOI (School of Infantry) that were trained to fight
in combat as well as open up to each other and create wonderful bonds with one
another. After training, they were finally sent to AFG where they spent months

They weren t capturing the real thing. O Donnell on the other hand, he stayed with
the Marines every step of the way. Marines fought, they got injured, some even
died and fell in front of him, but he never backed away. 4.Did you learn anything
new? If so what? During boot camp, we were taught about the Battle of Fallujah,
but after reading this book, I was able to understand so much better. I was able to
picture their tactics, strategies, their emotions, and why the Marines were called
the Greatest Generation. 5.Which part of the book did you find most interesting?
This question is honestly the most difficult to answer. The entire book was
intriguing from start to finish. I would say that what I liked the most about this
book is all the pictures he placed on there. He captured every image with so much
meaning. It is as it s said, a picture is worth a thousand words. I got to see the faces
of the fellow heroes in Fallujah. 6.Did this book inspire you to want to do more
research on the subject? Why? Why not? This book got me interested in the citations
of the marines in 1st platoon. I would also like to know if the author got injured
during the battle. The battle itself is very tragic and horrible, but just knowing how
these men had each other s back was enough for me to want to their about their
backgrounds. 7.Would you recommend it to a friend or another Marine? Why? Why
not? I would definitely

The right to life. The right to liberty. The right to pursue happiness. These rights
were endowed by man s creator, and such rights, are to the government to protect.
Abraham Lincoln was America s commander in chief during this time, fighting not
another nation, but his own that was imploding on itself because these rights were
no longer being protected. Black men, black women, black children were being
sold into slavery against their will, torn apart from their loved ones, to be the field
hands for slave owners, punished if they did not succumb to the demands of their
master. Blacks were forced into this way of life, with no chance of escape. Slaves
were beaten. Slaves were raped. Slaves were treated with an equality to that of
animals or possibly less. Slave owners of the antebellum south dehumanized slaves
to the point of a psychological slum. This is the hate. This is the heritage. American

has been put in place to prevent the truth of slavery from seeping in, penetrating the

owners during this period of time in America s history was simply corrupt and unjust.
Slave owners were merciless. America cannot fully recover from this scar of its past

Lack of knowledge about system vulnerabilities: As a team we are not well versed

project plan. Lack of knowledge about technologies: Although as a team we have
some experience doing web development from classes, none of us have ever
worked on a large web project. We are also going to use ReactJS, a frontend library,
that no one on the team has used before. This could slow down the development
process as we learn new technologies and could lead to organizational issues in the
U.s. R And D Industrial Policy
U.S. R D Industrial Policy While the United States touts free market policies as
main guiding principles, U.S. policy makers have actively used research and
development (R D) industrial policies to maintain and grow the U.S. economy.
There are two types of R D, also known as research and experimentation (R E),
funding models; one is direct federal research dollars given to industry, typically for
basic research, and the other in the use of taxcredits for R D activities. Tax credit
policies began in 1981 as part of the Economic Recovery Tax Act (Talley, 2011).
The U.S. has long funded R D, however this funding has steadily decreased with the
total in 1976 of just over 1.2% of GDP with dropping below .8% of GDP in 2014
(AAAS, 2014a). As of 2013, South Korea, Finland, Japan, Taiwan, and Germany
all outspend the U.S. on direct R D funding relative to GDP (AAAS, 2014b). The
IMF and OECD indicate that R D tax credits are a main growth strategy for the G 20
nations (IMF, 2014). This research topics explores how the United Statesdomestic
industrial policies supporting research and development influence business and
entrepreneurial behaviors within the U.S., which industries has this benefited the
most, overall societal impacts of advancements in technology and automation, and
finally how this supports comparative advantage for the United States as well as
implications for developing nations. The U.S. Congress has funded the R D tax credit

First Person Perspective in Fiction;
An Analysis of A Journal Of The Plague Year by Daniel Defoe
Characterization and point of view are two very important tools that authors use in
writing fiction. They both interoperate with one another to advance the plot and
contribute significantly to the meaning. An author s choice of point of view can
reveal the purpose, strategy or intentions that he or she aimed for as well. One such
author that wrote his fiction with evident strategy is Daniel Defoe in his work A
Journal Of The Plague Year. This story is about a man recording the events and
observations of the plague visitation, as the narrator calls it, to London during the ...

There are times where it is wiser to use third person as well. In the case of Defoe s
character however, the personalization is what makes the story distinctive and
discernable from articles, newspapers and textbooks that show the time period and
events that took place in the fictional journal. Because we can relate to the narrator,
it is easier for us to like the story. This is beneficial to Daniel Defoe because the
readers will be drawn in quicker. Also, the first personnarration makes the story less
of an historical account meant to purely inform the masses, and more of a novel
that explores the social dynamics and political framework of a city that was indeed
plagued with a deadly infection during the late 17th century. More importantly
though, it is due to first person point of view that we are introduced to the central
figure of the story, whom without would not make this fictional journal as
compelling. First and foremost, as we begin to read the text, given the fact that the
story is written in first person point of view, we have to evaluate the reliability of
the narrator. While it may be easier to relate to him, that doesn t necessarily assure
that the narrator can be a trusted character. Factors such as biases, judgments,
behaviors and personality in general contribute to the likeability and credibility of
the protagonist. If the character has a very skewed way of thinking and viewing the
world, or is too unstable that

For starters, Mandelbaum is very long winded his chapters go on forever. There
are certain ideas that he can convey in 5 pages but instead, he chooses to do so in
15 pages. His writing style is so plain that it makes following the chapters that much
harder. The information that Mandelbaum presents about in relation to the sports of
baseball, football and basketball are good I just wish his chapters were shorter.
Information can get lost quickly if there are 80 pages of information to read about
one sport. Aside from that, I learned a lot from his chapter about basketball. In
chronological order, Mandelbaum writes how the game of basketball shifted from a
sport that was primarily white to primarily African American. The first African
American player to enter the NBA was in 1950. By the 1980s four out of every
five starting players in the league were black. Mandelbaum makes the argument
that African Americans were needed in the league or else the game would not
have been as developed as it is now. The game as it developed would have been far
poorer in every way without them (Mandelbaum,248). The same time that the
professional game was developing so too was the street game. In chapter 4 I
learned about the winner take all market. According to investopedia.com, this is a
concept in which the best performers are able to capture a very large share of the
rewards, and the remaining competitors are left with very little. The chances of most
African American making it to the NBA is very slim, according to the book chances
are 135,800 to
Taking a Look at Capoeira and Belly Dancing
Throughout history, dance has served as a form that performs and embodies the
cultural values of the society it is in. The idea of dance varies within intellectual
traditions and develops to a wider concept of movement practices within individual
cultures. Dance can be looked upon as a culturally formed activity that offers
information about human behavior in a certain society. Dancehas also served to
disrupt the cultural values in a society due to cultural evolution and cultural
migration. The discipline in cultures function with a receptive approach to the
exploitation of Western values. The West judges other cultures according to the

When belly dance first originated, it was a dance that was performed at the
bedsides of women during childbirth. This helped a woman through labor and made
the birth less painful. This ritualistic practice was known in the Middle East and
North Africa. Belly dancing was for the women only and men were not allowed to
view out of respect.
As belly dancing moved through different cultures and areas, it has gained a whole
new outlook on it is perceived. From being known as a ritualistic dance, it quickly
changed to the cabaret scene. It is now an art form created by women for personal
entertainment and an avenue for sexual expression. The people who were
spreading their knowledge on belly dancing were Gypsies. Gypsies are known for
their glamorous wardrobe and practically changed how belly dancing was seen. This
now exotic and erratic dance entertained men. The North finally was introduced to
this style in 1893. Belly dancing was pure entertainment and became a type of
parody that filtered into nightclubs and strip clubs. It took on this role that achieved
to make belly dancing a sexual dance instead of a conservative, ritual dance. From
one dramatic change to another, the Eastern and Western worlds have their own take
on belly dancing. The

A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF PLATO S AND SARTRE S VIEWS ON EXISTENCE
Introduction
In order to understand the meaning of existence in relation to philosophy, we need
to discuss its ordinary meaning and the various levels of existence. The Chambers
Concise Dictionary (1992, 362) defines exist as having an actual being; to live; to
occur; to continue to live and it defines existence as the state of existing or being . In
other words, the Dictionary does not make a distinction between existence and living.
However, philosophically there is the view that existence is different from living.
What then is the meaning of existence in philosophy? In order to answer this question
we shall examine how philosophers have used the term in their ... Show more content

Sartre expressed the existentialist position in the phrase that existence precedes
essence This phrase means that it is the particular individual existence that is more
important than the essence of the individual. As a matter of fact, Sartre believed that
human beings do not possess any essential quality by which their nature is defined.
Thus it is the individual human being who is able to define his/her own existence
and whatever the individual is or what she is to become is a product of her own free
choice. Sartre s existentialism is a form of atheism in the sense that God is not
recognized as a creator of human beings. This view will not go well with
Christians. Thus according to Phelan (2005: 312) Sartre s existentialism is equated
with mean, vulgar, ugly and scandalous act and therefore, all moral guidance or
comments on other people s action will be rendered meaningless . However, in
certain situations, it is allowed that criticism can be made of certain human actions
with certain degree of consensus that such criticisms are appropriate. Sartre used the
Paper Knife Argument (Phelan, 2005) to explain his view that existence precedes
essence . The paper knife argument is the argument used by Sartre to define
existentialism as a rejection of both theism and essentialism. Sartre s

Even thought the Act s interpretative instruction to interpret legislation as compatible
with Convention right as so far as is possible in section 3(1) applies only to statute
and not common law it has been argued that section 6 of the Act shows that the only
law which should not be subject to human rights obligations is incompatible

compatible with the Convention in an incremental fashion. However, the Human
Rights Act cannot be used to create new courses of action in private law.
The Act provides that it is unlawful for a public authority to act in such a way as to
contravene convention rights. For those purpose public authority includes any other

publicizing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. They are
often called promos . In 1940, Walt Disney created Fantasia , an animated film
based around famous piece of classical music. The original music videos were shot
in the 1950s. In 1956 Tony Bennett was shooting walking along The Serpentine in
Hyde Park as his song Stranger in Paradise played. This was dispersed to TV
stations in the UK and US. The Beatles first major motion picture A hard Day s
Night in 1964 arguably set out the basic visual vocabulary of today s music videos.
Penny Lane in 1967 used methods derived from underground and avant garde film
to exemplify the song in an artful manner. 1970s In the UK the significance of Top
of the Pops to promote a single created an environment of revolution and competition
amongst bands and record labels as the show s producers placed strict limits on the
number of videos it would use, consequently a good video would increase a song s

videos as promos. 1980s 1981 MTV is launched. The first video to be aired was

Role of Women in Hesiod s Theogony and Works and Days
In most Greek mythology there is a general hostility towards the female sex, which
relays that most poets and writers themselves were sexist. Throughout Hesiod s
Theogony and Works and Days, women are portrayed in a very subservient
manner, placing them far below men and are almost despised. However, in more
than one instance, manipulation, women s true power, is shown. They are
constantly described as beautiful temptresses, which could be thought of as the
weakness of many men. When Theogony and Works and Days are looked at as a
whole it is obvious that Hesiod s opinion of women, most likely shared by the Greeks
themselves, is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mere creation of women on earth was a punishment to man because of the
devious Prometheus decision to steal fire and give it to mankind. As Hesiod
describes it, That s just how Zeus, the high lord of thunder, made women as a curse
for mortal men, Evil conspirators (148). This alone sends the message that Hesiod
believed women to be evil. She is created as a beautiful temptress, just as many of the
goddesses are described. They are

The Trojan Women ( 1971 )
The movie The Trojan Women (1971) is a successful and compelling contemporary
adaption of the tragedy The Trojan Women, written by Euripides. Overall, the film
follows the whole plot very well and depicts the main characters of Euripides work
expressly, especially characters like Cassandra, Andromache, and Helen. Although the
director of the film has made a few slight alterations, audience can feel Trojan women
s grief and pain and comprehend the plot with no trouble.
The film and the ancient play have some minor disparities. First, in the beginning,
the play starts with the conversation between Poseidon and Athena. Poseidon
describes the aftermath of the war and the bleak scene, giving out a background
story. Then, Athena has changed her mind and switched to the Trojan side. In
contract, there is no god involved and appeared in the movie. Poseidon s and Athena
s role is taken by a narrator. The scene of women being pushed is enough to show to
the audience the background. Second, the chorus only sings once in the film, mostly
just speaking, while the chorus in the play sings in between every act. The chorus is
used to switch to the next act and to tell the background. However, the film is quite
fluent without excess singings of the chorus, because the movie is easy to change the
location, time, and setting smoothly. Small changes like these two parts do not affect
the big picture.
Instead of these small changes, characters like Cassandra, Andromache, and Helen in
the film,

This story describes the life of the author s father. Although, it is odd he never
mentions any personal memories of his bond with his father. While the author was
growing up it seems as though his father was too concerned with his struggles of
life and never built a bond with his son. In today s society economic, social, and
other desires hinder parents and children from having effective and valuable
relationships. His father was occupied trying to locate a stable job for his family. His
father s drinking problem and adulterous ways of living joined with constantly

it is likely that he would suffer from the same incapability to form a bond with his

(Legal service commission, 2015) The Corporations Act 2001 encompasses four
principal duties that are primary to directors, including care and diligence, proper
use of position, proper use of information and good faith (Australian Institute of
Company Directors, 2015). This section of paper will elaborate on the four principal
duties mentioned earlier along with statutory duties. Act Honestly The director
should act in good faith and for the welfare of the company in proper use. The duty
requires more than just a normal sense of honestly, it demands directors to
implement independent judgment in light of relevant facts, views, materials when
assessing for the welfare of the company. It is of chief importance that a breach of
this duty involving fraud, recklessness and dishonestly could attract criminal
penalties. Care and diligence The act identifies that directors are to act with a notch
of overhaul and assiduousness that a sensible person might be expected to
demonstrate in the role (s 180). Proper use of information To not indecorously use

Holmes Good Vs Evil
The quote captures the constant contrast between good and evil. Holmes is a
vicious man and will use anyone to obtain whatever objective is set into motion. It
analyzes Holmes development in the dark and light, he is presented as both and
does not abide to one specific element. Holmes presents himself to everyone he
meets as charismatic. Disarming their guards to achieve something; benefit from
them in some shape or form. He uses these traits to obtain something whether the act
be good or evil; they cannot portray the true meaning of his actions. In certain cases
his charm is used to present purity in the action, but deep down reveal a sinister act.
Belknap still did not like Holmes, but he found his candor sufficiently disarming
(Larson 87). Holmes contains many different traits to his personality, mostly good
and evil depicted through his actions in the novel. In parallel to his varying
personality, other characters also hold many uncertain feelings towards Holmes, due
to his attitude differences from person to person. The general understanding of

Essay on The Role of Men in Adrienne Rich s Of Woman
Born
The Role of Men in Of Woman Born
Adrienne Rich, via Of Woman Born, has created a wonderfully complex description
and analysis of the condition of being a woman in our patriarchal American culture,
or at least in the middle class, white portion of it, as she acknowledges in the
introduction to the 1986 edition of the book. Since I happen to fit into this category, I
find this book to be very personally satisfying, although I can certainly imagine that
Rich s writings wouldn t be completely applicable to all women in America. Rich
examines the various issues surrounding multiple aspects of being a woman
motherhood, relations with men, relations with children, relations with the patriarchy
at large, etc. with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women, as the inculturators of children, have the potential usually unrecognized for
using this power to change the society. Reading Of Woman Born has caused me to
reevaluate this final idea in ways that I will try to briefly explain.
First of all, to say simply that women have the power to change the way they
inculturate children, and thus the culture at large, is to deny the reality that women
are not one group thinking with one mind about changes that should be made.
And, of course, it is very difficult to change your own inculturation and recreate
yourself, much more difficult to change the way in which you relate to the larger
society. My own beliefs of the power of women had much more to do with some
sort of potential that seems to lie untapped, that might be used to change the culture
if only women could be unified in their views and efforts in regards to our violent
patriarchal culture. The problem I now see in this sort of viewpoint is that it tends
to lay the blame for the culture at the feet of women. It provides another source of
guilt for the mother, for either not trying to raise her children in a different way, or,
as Rich explores, for raising her children to be potential outcasts.
Rich refers to this issue of inculturation especially in the chapter titled Mother and
Son, Woman and Man. In the context of critiquing my own earlier views on this,
section 6 of this chapter seems important. Rich writes here about sons,
How Did Religion Influence The Civil Rights Movement
Many people tend to not fathom how religion plays such a powerful role within
our world today. It even played a powerful role in the beginning of the United State
hundreds of years ago when it was founded. Religion intertwined in the social
development in America since the very beginning. We see religion animatedly in
World War II, when many religious leaders risked their own lives to fight in a war
that hurt so many people. In the book The Religious History of America by Edwin
Gaustad and Leigh Schmidt, it is publicized that even two decades after the war,
religionhelped with sparking one of the most influential parts of America s history.

those who did not possess a voice. He spoke for those who had a voice, but did not

The Amendment Of The United States Constitution
use of force is always a heavily debated topic for law enforcement. Every action an
officer takes during an altercation when use of force is present, will be reviewed by
chief s, lieutenant s captain s etc. With the recent rise in officer involved shootings,
the demand for less lethal force measures has begun to rise. The eighth amendment of
the United States Constitution was made for protection against cruel and unusual
punishment; if an officer uses lethal force in an altercation they have deprived that
person of their rights. Also the fourteenth amendment gives us the right to due
process; lethal force deprives us of that right. There is a saying that has come to light
recently that law enforcement officers are the judge the jury and the executioner.
Officers have become heavily criticized for using lethal force in altercations that less
lethal could have possibly been used. With officer involved shooting on the rise
society wants us to re examine other alternatives. There will be times that an officer
must use their duty weapon, but many of the recent shootings could have been
avoided with the use of less lethal tools. Lethal force often affects the department s
image negatively and brings un wanted media attention; it can be hard to rebuild the
trust with the community. When officers deploy less lethal tactics it is often
overlooked by any media attention and any civil issues. In an effort to help
department s combat un wanted lethal encounters, this research will

The Evolution Of The American Family Essay
The Evolution of the American Family
Lisa Parris Godley
Introduction
n the upcoming page s I will answer the following questions. Why is family the most
important agent of socialization? What caused the dramatic changes to the American
family? What are the changes? I will discuss the differences in marriage and family, I
will discuss how they are linked to class, race, gender, and personal choices. The
purpose of this study is to explore the many different family functions and the paths
that people are now choosing. I will give my opinion on whether these changes have
had a positive or negative affect. I will finally discuss the trend of the modern family,
back to pre World War II family structure, how would that effect the strides that have
been made in the progression of women rights.
American families have never been as diverse as they are today. There is a
constant changing definition of what we call family . We as Americans are
straying further and further from the idea of a classic nuclear family. One of the
biggest reasons is a dramatic rise in kids living with a single parent. In 2014, just
14% of children younger than 18 lived with a stay at home mother and a working
father who were in their first marriage (Livingston, 2015). This research will address
in depth why households are now more diverse than ever, what s the normal family
now, and why aren t the laws adjusting to how the average American family lives
today.

Sisters Of Mercy
The Sister s of Mercy live up to five critical concerns, which means that they have
five focus points of which they feel are the strongest and most important issues to
focus on. These topics include: Earth, Immigration, Racism, Women, and
Nonviolence. While all five topics are important, the Sisters of Mercy work
towards ending violence. The Sisters of Mercy focus on the violence of the
community as well as how it surrounds school settings. Every day, a person is put
into danger because of the place they live in. Starting from a young age and being in
school and getting bullied, to growing up and join a gang, violence is all over the
community and is never ending. This affects society because people should feel safe

In the Newspaper article, Building a Safe Chicago written by the Chicago Sun
Times, underlines the meaning of violence and describes how people in the
community fell as they live in fear because of the violence caused in their
neighborhoods. The article states, What we do know is that several of our
neighborhoods are and have been experiencing persistent and disproportionately
high levels of violence. It ripples through families and communities and should be
a matter of concern to every Chicago resident (Chicago Sun Times). These people
live their lives with an unknown fear today. Everyday they question their safety as
they live in the city. As this connects to schools, students should feel safe at school.
The classroom is meant to be a safe environment where they can learn about the
world as well as themselves. When school s are attacked by shooters or even by
bullies students shut down and become fearful of their education. The Sisters of
Mercy live up to this concern as they work towards their goal of ending violence.
They have hopes of keeping the world safe and finding ways to make the
community a safer place to live. In conclusion, the Sun Times stand against violence
in hopes that one day as a community we can end violence all
Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay
Arab Israeli Conflict During the First World War (1914 1918), Britain met with
problems concerning promises made, yet not being kept. Britain, knowing that it
needed all the help it could get against the German allies, promised land to people
who desperately wanted it. However, as it was revealed Britain had no intention of
honouring their word. The first promise to be made was to the Arabs, in a desperate
attempt to overpower one of the countries the British were fighting; the Turks. The
Arab leader, Sherif Hussein, agreed to help defeat the Turks, on the condition that at
the end of the war, the Arabs would get their freedom. The British accepted the terms,
and in 1915 it was written up in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was, like the McMahon letter to the Arabs, promising the Jews ownership of
Palestine. This was, made at a time when Britain was having many problems
fighting the allies, and needed all the help they could find. There are a few reasons
why historians believe this letter was issued. It was thought that the Jews in
America and Russia had a lot of money and power, and so would therefore
encourage their governments to continue in the war. There was sympathy for the
Zionists, as the leaders like Balfour knew that the Jews had endured a lot of
hardship, and suffered many injustices, and so saw this promise as a chance to right
some of the wrongs committed. Britain used the Suez Canal, in Egypt. However, it
was right next door to Palestine, and so it would greatly benefit Britain if the people
who governed the neighbouring Palestine, were friendly towards Britain and their
interests. The new leader of the Zionists, Chaim Weizmann, was a friend of a few
leading politicians such as Balfour and the present Prime minister, Lloyd George. It is
quite probable that the British Government had no idea of the changes that this
Declaration would cause on the short and long term effects on the problems between
the Arabs and the Jews. The consequences of these unkept promises were quite
terrible for Britain, making their situation in Europe much worse. The Arabs

Retired General Colin Powell Essay
Retired General Colin Powell Colin Powell stated, Being responsible sometimes
means pissing people off. It seemed as if he had found his place while in ROTC.
The discipline along with the structure, it was as if he had found people who were
like him. He had fallen in love with the Army and after forty years of service, he
retired. He was ask, what would have you done if you had not come in the Army? I
d probably be a bus driver, I don t know. The General had some very strong parental
guidance while growing up. His parents lived their lives with dignity and respect for

Powell was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Army and in 1962 sent to South
Vietnam as a military adviser. During a second tour of duty in the late 1960s, he
was in a helicopter crash and, despite his own injuries, was able to rescue fellow
soldiers from the burning wreckage. For his heroism, he was awarded the Soldier s
Medal, one of several commendations earned during his military career. Powell
excelled in military and academic pursuits. Although an average student in his
early years, he made excellent grades in his 30s while earning his MBA at George
Washington University, despite lacking many undergraduate prerequisites when
he enrolled. Powell never put chalk marks on the wall that indicated he has to do
this. He has tried to do his best at what came his way. He was not without ambition,
but driven by ambition. He had a full and active public life. He would like to be
remembered as a good soldier who served well, and is well thought of by his
fellows. Those fellows include his greatest mentors, the captains, and majors who
taught him as a lieutenant and kept him going straight ahead. The less you associate
with some people, the more your life will improve. Any time you tolerate mediocrity
in others, it increases your mediocrity. An important attribute in successful people is
their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. As you grow,
your associates will change. Some of your friends will not want you to go on.
The World Of International Studies
Research Narrative In the world of international studies there are many bias parties
and individuals as there are drastically differing viewpoints regarding hot topic
issues in the field. This makes for an exciting endeavor when conducting research on
topics such as Private Military Companies as all different types of political
personalities arise when such subjects are debated over. This characteristics of the
international relations area of study also becomes apparent when authors of scholarly
journals and public websites debate over fundamental issues of the aforementioned
subject, such as the different rules for engagement and fighting overseas. When
hunting for sources for this project, I found that the community of experts commonly

Christopher Kinsey wrote an incredibly informative article on the fundamentals of
Private Military and even touches on a few closely related issues, for example,
nuclear regulation was diccues twice through the article. Georgia Southern s library
website contain some very usful links and even some videos on techniques
regarding how to add diversity in a research paper. One such tip was to find two
different articles with completely opposite viewpoints and I believe the tactic to be
very useful. Another type of strategy that one can implement when conducting
research is to find an expert in the field and discusses their stance on the topic, it is
almost like them verbally writing you an entirely different source with a refreshing
perspective. One such expert is Dr. Lubecki. He was more than willing when asked
to be interviewed for this project. He explained that regarding private militaries,
they could start another major war, he used China as one excellent example, so it
is better to limit their use until they are fully regulated. The idea was one that
never appeared in any of the research for this project. The Power to Construct
International Security was a shorter academic article that was of different origin
than the other, this idea was suggested on the library website and has served as a
great tool for finding an array of articles. The last source is one from a famous and
reputable newspaper. I thought
Summary Of The Short Story The Shawl By Langston
Hughes
In the short story, The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick, the symbol of the Shawl changes
over the course of the story. For Magda, the protagonist who is a baby, the shawl
represents protection and nurturing. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl represents
mourning and emptiness for Rosa, Magda s mother. Similarly, in the short story,
Thank you, Ma am by Langston Hughes the blue suede shoessymbolize varying
ideas as the story develops. Initially, Roger, the protagonist, has a desire which is not
met, to own blue suede shoes, the shoes therefore, represent a feeling of lacking.
Later in the story Roger is given money to buy the shoes, at which point the shoes
begin to represent his needs being met. Both Ozick and Hughes use accessories as
symbols to illustrate the protagonists transitioning between gaining and lacking
proper nourishment.
The shawl provides Magda with sustenance and protection, which allows Magda to
provide these same benefits for Rosa. In describing the shawl, Ozick writes, It was
a magical shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days and three night . While the
shawl provides Magda with all the nutrients she needs to survive, Magda helps Rosa
feel satisfied, despite giving her food rations to Magda. Rosa gains these crucial
necessities indirectly from the shawl through Magda, while Magda, on the other
hand, benefits directly from the shawl. For both Magda and Rosa the shawl, in
providing them with the sustenance they need, symbolizes them having their basic
needs met.
Once Magda dies, however, the shawl symbolizes an emptiness and dearth of
nourishment. During her life, the shawl provides for Magda, which allows Rosa
to reap benefit also, but once Magda dies, and the shawl no longer provides
sustenance. Ozick writes, Rosa drank Magda s shawl until it dried . The shawl
dries up quickly, in contrast to the constant, never ending nourishment that the
shawl possessed prior to Magda s death. The dried up shawl symbolizes Rosa s
lacking. Before Magda died Rosa s needs were met through Magda, however, now
that Magda is gone Rosa no longer has those needs met. Although the shawl, initially,
symbolized Rosa receiving proper sustenance, once Magda dies the shawl symbolizes

Google s Best Company For Work For A Company
Many people dream of working for a company that is voted the Best Company to

Google s short lifespan, Google has over 50,000 employees spread across the world
that serves millions over the globe. If a person ever wondered how Googlehas become
such a powerful company, you must first understand the company s approach to
organizational behavior and how they keep their employees happy. After reviewing
several articles on Google s approach, I have found the secrets to how they motivate
their employees and why it works.

Among being the most used search engine, Google is known for the way it treats its
employees. One Major contributing factor to their employee s happiness is the way
they motivate those they hire. Motivation is the process of arousing and sustaining
goal directed behavior (2014,Nelson, Quick). Google s model of motivation and
leadership is unlike traditional leadership, which focuses more on results than on the
people who deliver those results. Instead, Google centered its work culture on its
philolosphy: To create the happiest, most productive workplace in the world.
(Martin,2014).
Google s vice president made it clear in a statement he made saying, It s less about
the aspiration to be No. 1 in the world and more that we want our employees and
future employees to love it here, because that s what s going to make us successful.
(Martin,2014). This has empowered employees to feel that they are truly valued, in
turn they are able to come up with one of a kind ideas and products.
One thing that Google s co founders did in its early days was go out scouting for
companies that were known to care for its employee s while developing amazing
brands (Martin,2014).. The idea behind this search was to find out what draws out
people s talents and what keeps those talents alive and fresh (Martin,2014). At times,
companies can be so customer driven that they treat their employees negatively in
order to deliver more products and
The Characteristics Of Geoffrey Chaucer s The
Canterbury...
Today, when one reads English literature from the fourteenth century, the thought of
an outdated and peculiar form of dialect comes to mind. While it is not appealing to
the eyes, further examinations allow one to see how this type of lingo is the first step
towards a modern vernacular. Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of The Canterbury Tales
and Trolius and Criseyed, is considered the founder of this new dialect due to the
foreign influences he acquired over his life. While this modernized writing style
allows him to be one of the most notable authors of all time, Chaucer also tends to be
recognized for his historical accuracy and social perspective. These characteristics are
evident in The Canterbury Tales because they provide great insight into the fourteenth
century s reflections of social adaptations, controversies within the church, and
equality amongst genders. Geoffrey Chauceris an English author who was born in
1343 into an average, middle class family. During his teenage years, he was given to
opportunity to work in an aristocratic household. This living arrangement gave
Chaucer the chance to observe the lifestyles of the middle and upper class and how
their relationships with the lower class were. These observations created a significant
impact towards his distinct writing style that comically and accurately portrayed
social adaptations. Such writing styles led a group of analysts to say Chaucer is
credited with having set the style for modern English Literature
Mr. Bennet Self-Knowledge In Pride And Prejudice
Firstly, Mr. Wickham has the lest self knowledge: He believed him to be
imprudent and extravagant. And since this sad affair has taken place, it is said
that he left Meryton greatly in debt (Austen 276). In other words, Wickham is
spending money that he does not have as well as running off and leave a pile of
debt in Meryton. From this experience Wickham had not gain enough self
knowledge to know how to deal with these types of situation plus he should had
made smarter choices in life that would cause him to gain self knowledge and a
better life. Secondly, Mr. Collins he did not change throughout the novel however,
from learning that Elizabeth would not accept him as a husband. He moved on
asked Charlotte which they are happy now. Bingley gained some self knowledge
when he decided to go to Jane and to marry her. This shows self knowledge because
he realizes he needs to go back and make things right. Mr. Bennet is the second

indeed! She will be married...But the clothes, the wedding clothes! I will write to

Bennet is excited that Lydia is going to get married and she is a bit worried about
wedding clothes. She gained almost no self knowledge because she still wants her
daughters to get married however, since one of her daughters is going to get married
she calmed down somewhat. Charlotte is on the middle ground when it comes to self
knowledge because she grown to adapt with her husband instead of resenting him.
Evidence of this is found in Pride and Prejudice: Mrs. Collins and myself sincerely
sympathise with you and all your respectable family, in your present distress (Austen

Steven Vail Case Summary
In this scenario we will assume a robbery was just committed, and the victim
provides the general description of the suspect. The police officer taking the report
works that particular area everyday and develops a possible suspect based on past
several similar past encounters with the suspected individual. The officer is unable
to currently locate the suspected individual for a show up, so he or she returns to
the victim. Instead of calling a detective to create a photo array, which would include
the officer s robbery suspect, the officer retrieves a booking photo of the suspect to
show to the victim. The officer prints a single photograph of the person who he or she
believes committed the robbery, and from that single photograph the victim identifies

Therefore in this scenario the identification of the suspect is unnecessarily suggestive
and there is a legitimate chance of misidentification because of the personal bias of
the police officer (Hall, 2015). Furthermore, in the case of Steven Avery, officers
responding to scene of the rape may have influenced the victim s identification of
Steven Avery (Ricciardi Demos, 2015). In the documentary, one of the on scene
officers overhears the victim s description of the rape suspect, and replies that
sounds like Steven Avery (Ricciardi Demos, 2015). Subsequently, the victim
identifies Steven Avery in a photo array and he is convicted of rape (Ricciardi
Demos, 2015). Consequently, I feel the circumstances surrounding photo arrays can
be too suggestive, although police officers follow protocol when the photo array is

identify the benefits and significance of the Arts in early childhood education.
According to the unit standards, this paper will determine a summary of the concepts
and skills of the four strands (music, dance, drama and visual arts) of the Creative
Arts. Furthermore, identifying and explaining play based learningas a pedagogical
practice will be focusing on this essay. Additionally, this essay will discuss, how play
based learning supports children s sensory, intellectual and aesthetic development and
artistic expression using supporting documents such as Australian Curriculum,
Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA], (2017. v. 8. 3) and Early Years

Vygotsky (1896 1934) stated this idea by describing that Apart from nature,
everything around the world, including culture is based on human imagination
(Nilsson Ferholt, 2014. p. 925). Duffy (2006) describes the creative as the ability to
perceive things in new and different ways, gaining knowledge from past exercises
and relating those experiences to figure out how to co op with new circumstances. He
also explains the creativity as thinking along strange lines and breaking boundaries,
utilising non conventional ways to deal with the issues, going more distant than the
given information and making something new or unique . Being artistic empowers
children to make relationships with one learning areas to another and develop their
knowledge in educational settings. This area incorporates music, dance, role play
and creative play (Sharp, 2001). Creative arts are the experiences that affect children
s creativity through dance, music, visual arts and dramatic play (Mills,

The free bird thinks of another breeze....a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams...
The two literary works I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and
Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird can be seen as mockingbirds that have flown over
fields of prejudice and repeat what they have seen for all to hear. Jem Finch, a young
boy and lawyer s son from To Kill a Mockingbird clearly symbolizes a mockingbird
because of his youth and innocence, and because of his innocence he cannot fully
understand the racism in the story. Jem also has many similarities to the caged and

While Jem was a young boy he acted very similar to the free bird in I Know Why
the Caged Bird Sings. He lived life to its fullest never stopping to think of the
racism he was being shielded from. The free bird thinks of another breeze and the
trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn
bright lawn and he names the sky his own. (Angelou, 14 18) In this stanza of the
poem you can infer that the free bird is very happy with life and never thinks of
anything upsetting. The upsetting things in this instance would be the racism in
the story; the free bird never stops to think about the caged bird. As the summer
progressed, so did our game. (Lee, pg. 52) When Jem and his sister Scout meet
Dill, a boy in their neighbor s yard, they get to know him and play with him. They
are always thinking of improving their game, living life to its fullest as much as a
kid can. When they are playing said game, Jem never stops to think about the
racism in the world and is shielded from it by the fun of being a kid. Concluding
that they are similar characters because both Jem and the free bird enjoy their
lives. Another reason why the free bird and Jem , the symbol of a mockingbird are
similar is they are both able to do what they please. A free bird leaps on the back of
the wind and floats downstream till the current ands and dips his wing
Analysis Of The Past And Present Stock Market
Analysis of the Past and Present Stock Market
The stock market has been the basis of finance in America for over a century, but it
was a long road for the modern stock exchange. Trading profits and portions of
companies have been a part of making money for hundreds of years, which then lead
to the formation of the current complex system of trading, biding, selling and buying
on the trading floor. Throughout history the intricate stock market system has become
the staple of American and global economics. The idea of the stock market was born
in the 1300s when moneylenders in Europe traded debts in order to unburden
themselves from risky loans. These lenders first traded within themselves then
individual customers, which resulted in the first investors. The Venetians led this
movement with the idea to trade internationally between governments. They became
the first modern brokers when they started carrying around slates with stock
information to meetings (Beattie). The first actual stock exchange dates back to 1531
in Antwerp, Belgium. Moneylenders and brokers in Antwerp would trade in
individual and government debt in the form promissory notes and bonds. Although
these primitive exchanges did not use actual stocks this was the basis of all future
stock exchanges (Beattie). In the 1600s the Dutch, British, and French governments
gave charters to the East India companies. These East India Companies looked for
investors willing to put up money for a voyage in

Nos faltan 43 (we are still missing 43), They took them alive, we want them back

against the corrupt government. The poem BuscГЎbamos a 43 (We were looking for
43) by Jenaro Villamil, expresses the perspective of the Mexican people. This poem
presents the tragedy with a melancholic tone. This has not been the first time that
violent injustices occurred in Mexico, but this poem shows how this event led the
mexican people to realize in the violence and horror they live. Jenaro Villamil starts
off the poem with the line ВїCuГЎnto horror seremos capaces de conocer? (1), which
translates to, how much horror will we be capable of knowing?, this expresses
how much horror they have already experienced. This source doesn t include any
specific facts or dates about the tragedy, because it is a poem, but it does introduce
how the students are seen by Mexico, as young humble victims. The lines that I was
more impacted by that Jenaro Villamil says are: Porque aГєn con ellos vivos, sanos,
salvos o heridos / No podemos callar A los olvidados que sembramos, which means,
because even with them alive, safe and sound, or wounded, we cannot remain silent
for the forgotten that we sowed. This segments of the poem represent the reason why
the mexican people protested, and keep protesting up to now, because even though
there are no signs of their bodies, they represent a part of the forgotten, who they are

Comparing Public Sector Organizations And Different
Scales
There are different ypes of organstions with different purposes and different scales,
first of there are public sector companies, public sector companies are owned by
the government rather then individuals, these include but are not limited to the
NSH , the police force and so on, public sector companies are not set up to make
profit but rather to help people of the country by providing various services, for
example the NHS tries to keep the nation healthy so there enough working people
and aim of the police force would to keep the rate low, the second secor is called
private sector, private sector companies are owned by individual or individulas, these
comaines are set up to genartate profit either through providing a product or service,
these are the most common type businesses, unlike the public sectormost of the
businessin thie section are competing with each other for the cunsumers attention.
Finaly there is the voluntary sector, voluntary sector, companies In this sector are
set up to raise money for charity, this companies in this sector are owned by
individual/ individuals just like the private sector but there goal is not to make profit
but rather raise to help popele in need #

The English Puritans
The English Puritans were a group of reformed Christians looking to escape for
England and its religious persecutions. With reformed beliefs and ideals, the Puritans
came to the New World forming new behaviors and strengthening unity among
believers in God and worship. Causing controversial conflict and laying persecutions
of their own, the Puritans will subse quently transform early America by laying the
foundation for political, social and religious plat forms.
During the 16th century, King Henry VIII would come to find himself in a bit of a
pre dicament. His first wife, Catherine failed to produce a son which was
unacceptable since there was such precedence in having a male heir as a successor
to the throne. King Henry s answer to this would be a divorce. However, this was
strictly forbidden under the laws of the Catholic Church so King Henry would start a
reformation leading to the Church of England. Most of the beliefs and religious
structure will stay the same apart from divorce. These shifts in religious re form
would bring about many who disagreed with the fundamental beliefs of the Church
of Eng land and they would come to be known as the Puritans. The Puritans were of
Protestant faith and found the reformed Church of England to be still too true to the
Catholic Church. This group of Protestants believed in a more simple and pure way
of life with a closer relationship with God. Thus, being deemed with the title,

  • 3. Development of Agricultural Tools and Machines Development of Agricultural Tools and Machines The development of machines began in the 1890 s when the first steam tractor and combine were made in California (Meij 3). There was a need to make more efficient use of the labor; therefore, machines were developed ( Agripedia 2). By 1914, the combine started to spread outside of California to the rest of the United States (Meij 4). Then in 1928 it spread to Great Britain and then to the Netherlands after World War II (Meij 4). The development of these machines was affected by long run price variation (Meij 4). When prices of grains were high, there were demands for ploughs, seed drills, cultivators, reapers, winnowing machines and others (Meij 5). After 1912, there was a shift from steam ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The land owners saved money by not having to pay as many labor workers (Meij 43). After all the tools and machines were created, people realized that the intention of farming was to produce food at the lowest price to the customer and therefore at the highest level of productivity per acre, per man, and per unit of equipment (Meij 52). To meet this high productivity level on smaller farms the equipment had to be made smaller (Meij 52). Western Germany developed a great range of small tractors for this purpose (Meij 53). In addition, small farms depended on second hand machinery as a source of equipment (Meij 54). There were also machines that could be joint owned or hired from contractors (Meij 56). These modifications had to be created for small farms in Europe. These time consuming modifications caused difficulties with rapid mechanization among Europe s small farms. Circumstances for Mechanization in the United States As a result of mechanization, the American farmer became on of the world s most productive agriculturists (Meij 65). In addition, mechanization provided to the pleasure and welfare of farm families and to activiness of the labor supply (Meij 65). Mechanization in the United States began during World War I, when there was a shortage of food (Meij 73). This called forth tractors, motor trucks, combines, corn pickers, hay loaders, and tillage
  • 4. Food Controversy Food Controversy In the food industry there have been many issues and processes that have brought a large amount of question to the industry overall, like the meat packing process in its early stages. I can t think of a more heated issue in the last few passing years then the controversy over Genetically modified organisms in the food industry. Some countries are for it some are against it. Many sides will argue that genetically mutated organisms (GMO) are bad for the food industry while others will argue the opposite. While genetically mutate organisms have proved to provide many positive uses on today s earth the question still remains the same are GMO s good for us, the environment, or at all. Also if they yield more negative... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now say this crop began to grow outside of where it was intended. Possibly the seeds spread to somewhere unintended. Now we have a super crop that is beginning to invade different parts of the already functional ecosystem in the surrounding area. These super crops would begin to take over the already existing species of corn, possibly wiping out the indigenous variety completely. This hypothetical situation I just described is actually quite similar to what actually occurred in Mexico in 2002. (Charles Clover) GMO corn crops actually crossed the border into Mexico and weaseled its way into their southern corn crops. About 1,876 seedlings from indigenous varieties of corn from different areas in the country were analyzed by scientists. Of these seedlings 95 percent found traces of a gene from the cauliflower mosaic virus, which was used as a sort of on switch to invoke insecticidal or herbicidal properties on the GMO corn crops created in the United States. This contamination averaged 10 to 15 percent and reached a peak of 35 percent of the rural farmers crops cross pollinated with the GMO strain. These crops spread with such speed that this problem was unpredictable. Along with the possibility of GMO crops spreading and taking over other strains of the crop GMO s can also affect different species of insects in the area potentially destroying the
  • 5. We Were One By Patrick K. O Donnell 1.In as few words as possible, what is this book about? The book is called WE WERE ONE written by Patrick K. O Donnell, a historian that wanted ...to do something, and in some small way, out of patriotism, make a difference. (pg. 219, O Donnell.) He wanted to record the stories of those fighting in the Battle of Fallujah, but to do so he experienced the battle shoulder to shoulder with the Marines. The author of this book starts off by explaining how Lima Company s First Platoon started. After training, they were finally sent to AFG where they spent months patrolling and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They weren t capturing the real thing. O Donnell on the other hand, he stayed with the Marines every step of the way. Marines fought, they got injured, some even died and fell in front of him, but he never backed away. 4.Did you learn anything new? If so what? During boot camp, we were taught about the Battle of Fallujah, but after reading this book, I was able to understand so much better. I was able to picture their tactics, strategies, their emotions, and why the Marines were called the Greatest Generation. 5.Which part of the book did you find most interesting? This question is honestly the most difficult to answer. The entire book was intriguing from start to finish. I would say that what I liked the most about this book is all the pictures he placed on there. He captured every image with so much meaning. It is as it s said, a picture is worth a thousand words. I got to see the faces of the fellow heroes in Fallujah. 6.Did this book inspire you to want to do more research on the subject? Why? Why not? This book got me interested in the citations of the marines in 1st platoon. I would also like to know if the author got injured during the battle. The battle itself is very tragic and horrible, but just knowing how these men had each other s back was enough for me to want to their about their backgrounds. 7.Would you recommend it to a friend or another Marine? Why? Why not? I would definitely

Black men, black women, black children were being sold into slavery against their will, torn apart from their loved ones, to be the field hands for slave owners, punished if they did not succumb to the demands of their master. Blacks were forced into this way of life, with no chance of escape. Slaves were beaten. Slaves were raped. Slaves were treated with an equality to that of animals or possibly less. Slave owners of the antebellum south dehumanized slaves to the point of a psychological slum. This is the hate. This is the heritage. R And D Industrial Policy U.S. R D Industrial Policy While the United States touts free market policies as main guiding principles, U.S. policy makers have actively used research and development (R D) industrial policies to maintain and grow the U.S. economy. There are two types of R D, also known as research and experimentation (R E), funding models; one is direct federal research dollars given to industry, typically for basic research, and the other in the use of taxcredits for R D activities. Tax credit policies began in 1981 as part of the Economic Recovery Tax Act (Talley, 2011). The U.S. has long funded R D, however this funding has steadily decreased with the total in 1976 of just over 1.2% of GDP with dropping below .8% of GDP in 2014 (AAAS, 2014a). As of 2013, South Korea, Finland, Japan, Taiwan, and Germany all outspend the U.S. on direct R D funding relative to GDP (AAAS, 2014b). The IMF and OECD indicate that R D tax credits are a main growth strategy for the G 20 nations (IMF, 2014). This research topics explores how the United Statesdomestic industrial policies supporting research and development influence business and entrepreneurial behaviors within the U.S., which industries has this benefited the most, overall societal impacts of advancements in technology and automation, and finally how this supports comparative advantage for the United States as well as implications for developing nations. • 10. Journal of the Plague Year and First Person Perspective Essay Meagan Kirchoff Dr. McNutt 10/14/11 Patterns of Literature First Person Perspective in Fiction; An Analysis of A Journal Of The Plague Year by Daniel Defoe Characterization and point of view are two very important tools that authors use in writing fiction. They both interoperate with one another to advance the plot and contribute significantly to the meaning. An author s choice of point of view can reveal the purpose, strategy or intentions that he or she aimed for as well. One such author that wrote his fiction with evident strategy is Daniel Defoe in his work A Journal Of The Plague Year. This story is about a man recording the events and observations of the plague visitation, as the narrator calls it, to London during the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are times where it is wiser to use third person as well. In the case of Defoe s character however, the personalization is what makes the story distinctive and discernable from articles, newspapers and textbooks that show the time period and events that took place in the fictional journal. Because we can relate to the narrator, it is easier for us to like the story. This is beneficial to Daniel Defoe because the readers will be drawn in quicker. Also, the first personnarration makes the story less of an historical account meant to purely inform the masses, and more of a novel that explores the social dynamics and political framework of a city that was indeed plagued with a deadly infection during the late 17th century. More importantly though, it is due to first person point of view that we are introduced to the central figure of the story, whom without would not make this fictional journal as compelling. First and foremost, as we begin to read the text, given the fact that the story is written in first person point of view, we have to evaluate the reliability of the narrator. While it may be easier to relate to him, that doesn t necessarily assure that the narrator can be a trusted character. Factors such as biases, judgments, behaviors and personality in general contribute to the likeability and credibility of the protagonist. The information that Mandelbaum presents about in relation to the sports of baseball, football and basketball are good I just wish his chapters were shorter. Information can get lost quickly if there are 80 pages of information to read about one sport. Aside from that, I learned a lot from his chapter about basketball. In chronological order, Mandelbaum writes how the game of basketball shifted from a sport that was primarily white to primarily African American. The first African American player to enter the NBA was in 1950. By the 1980s four out of every five starting players in the league were black. Mandelbaum makes the argument that African Americans were needed in the league or else the game would not have been as developed as it is now. The game as it developed would have been far poorer in every way without them (Mandelbaum,248). The same time that the professional game was developing so too was the street game. In chapter 4 I learned about the winner take all market. According to investopedia.com, this is a concept in which the best performers are able to capture a very large share of the rewards, and the remaining competitors are left with very little. The chances of most African American making it to the NBA is very slim, according to the book chances are 135,800 to

The Chambers Concise Dictionary (1992, 362) defines exist as having an actual being; to live; to occur; to continue to live and it defines existence as the state of existing or being . In other words, the Dictionary does not make a distinction between existence and living. However, philosophically there is the view that existence is different from living. Sartre expressed the existentialist position in the phrase that existence precedes essence This phrase means that it is the particular individual existence that is more important than the essence of the individual. As a matter of fact, Sartre believed that human beings do not possess any essential quality by which their nature is defined. Thus it is the individual human being who is able to define his/her own existence and whatever the individual is or what she is to become is a product of her own free choice. Sartre s existentialism is a form of atheism in the sense that God is not recognized as a creator of human beings. This view will not go well with Christians. Thus according to Phelan (2005: 312) Sartre s existentialism is equated with mean, vulgar, ugly and scandalous act and therefore, all moral guidance or comments on other people s action will be rendered meaningless . However, in certain situations, it is allowed that criticism can be made of certain human actions with certain degree of consensus that such criticisms are appropriate. Sartre used the Paper Knife Argument (Phelan, 2005) to explain his view that existence precedes essence . The paper knife argument is the argument used by Sartre to define existentialism as a rejection of both theism and essentialism. Sartre s

Even thought the Act s interpretative instruction to interpret legislation as compatible with Convention right as so far as is possible in section 3(1) applies only to statute and not common law it has been argued that section 6 of the Act shows that the only law which should not be subject to human rights obligations is incompatible legislation. Overall, the film follows the whole plot very well and depicts the main characters of Euripides work expressly, especially characters like Cassandra, Andromache, and Helen. Although the director of the film has made a few slight alterations, audience can feel Trojan women s grief and pain and comprehend the plot with no trouble. The film and the ancient play have some minor disparities. First, in the beginning, the play starts with the conversation between Poseidon and Athena. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women, as the inculturators of children, have the potential usually unrecognized for using this power to change the society. Reading Of Woman Born has caused me to reevaluate this final idea in ways that I will try to briefly explain. First of all, to say simply that women have the power to change the way they inculturate children, and thus the culture at large, is to deny the reality that women are not one group thinking with one mind about changes that should be made. And, of course, it is very difficult to change your own inculturation and recreate yourself, much more difficult to change the way in which you relate to the larger society. My own beliefs of the power of women had much more to do with some sort of potential that seems to lie untapped, that might be used to change the culture if only women could be unified in their views and efforts in regards to our violent patriarchal culture. The problem I now see in this sort of viewpoint is that it tends to lay the blame for the culture at the feet of women. It provides another source of guilt for the mother, for either not trying to raise her children in a different way, or, as Rich explores, for raising her children to be potential outcasts. Rich refers to this issue of inculturation especially in the chapter titled Mother and Son, Woman and Man. It even played a powerful role in the beginning of the United State hundreds of years ago when it was founded. Religion intertwined in the social development in America since the very beginning. We see religion animatedly in World War II, when many religious leaders risked their own lives to fight in a war that hurt so many people. In the book The Religious History of America by Edwin Gaustad and Leigh Schmidt, it is publicized that even two decades after the war, religionhelped with sparking one of the most influential parts of America s history. The Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King, Jr. Everyone knows this name, because this name belongs to the man who switched the racial colored lenses that the face of America once wore. King was a man who was influential through his persuasive and compelling words. King was courageous and valiant, giving the minority this bravery as well. He spoke for those who did not possess a voice. He spoke for those who had a voice, but did not know exactly how to use it. He spoke to transform the world. • 32. The Amendment Of The United States Constitution use of force is always a heavily debated topic for law enforcement. Every action an officer takes during an altercation when use of force is present, will be reviewed by chief s, lieutenant s captain s etc. With the recent rise in officer involved shootings, the demand for less lethal force measures has begun to rise. The eighth amendment of the United States Constitution was made for protection against cruel and unusual punishment; if an officer uses lethal force in an altercation they have deprived that person of their rights. Also the fourteenth amendment gives us the right to due process; lethal force deprives us of that right. There is a saying that has come to light recently that law enforcement officers are the judge the jury and the executioner. Officers have become heavily criticized for using lethal force in altercations that less lethal could have possibly been used. With officer involved shooting on the rise society wants us to re examine other alternatives. There will be times that an officer must use their duty weapon, but many of the recent shootings could have been avoided with the use of less lethal tools. Lethal force often affects the department s image negatively and brings un wanted media attention; it can be hard to rebuild the trust with the community. When officers deploy less lethal tactics it is often overlooked by any media attention and any civil issues. In an effort to help department s combat un wanted lethal encounters, this research will

  • 45. The Evolution Of The American Family Essay The Evolution of the American Family Lisa Parris Godley Introduction n the upcoming page s I will answer the following questions. Why is family the most important agent of socialization? What caused the dramatic changes to the American family? What are the changes? I will discuss the differences in marriage and family, I will discuss how they are linked to class, race, gender, and personal choices. The purpose of this study is to explore the many different family functions and the paths that people are now choosing. I will give my opinion on whether these changes have had a positive or negative affect. I will finally discuss the trend of the modern family, back to pre World War II family structure, how would that effect the strides that have been made in the progression of women rights. American families have never been as diverse as they are today. There is a constant changing definition of what we call family . We as Americans are straying further and further from the idea of a classic nuclear family. One of the biggest reasons is a dramatic rise in kids living with a single parent. In 2014, just 14% of children younger than 18 lived with a stay at home mother and a working father who were in their first marriage (Livingston, 2015). This research will address in depth why households are now more diverse than ever, what s the normal family now, and why aren t the laws adjusting to how the average American family lives today. Britain, knowing that it needed all the help it could get against the German allies, promised land to people who desperately wanted it. However, as it was revealed Britain had no intention of honouring their word. The first promise to be made was to the Arabs, in a desperate attempt to overpower one of the countries the British were fighting; the Turks. This was, made at a time when Britain was having many problems fighting the allies, and needed all the help they could find. There are a few reasons why historians believe this letter was issued. It was thought that the Jews in America and Russia had a lot of money and power, and so would therefore encourage their governments to continue in the war. There was sympathy for the Zionists, as the leaders like Balfour knew that the Jews had endured a lot of hardship, and suffered many injustices, and so saw this promise as a chance to right some of the wrongs committed. Britain used the Suez Canal, in Egypt. However, it was right next door to Palestine, and so it would greatly benefit Britain if the people who governed the neighbouring Palestine, were friendly towards Britain and their interests. The new leader of the Zionists, Chaim Weizmann, was a friend of a few leading politicians such as Balfour and the present Prime minister, Lloyd George. It is quite probable that the British Government had no idea of the changes that this Declaration would cause on the short and long term effects on the problems between the Arabs and the Jews. The consequences of these unkept promises were quite terrible for Britain, making their situation in Europe much worse. The Arabs

For Magda, the protagonist who is a baby, the shawl represents protection and nurturing. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl represents mourning and emptiness for Rosa, Magda s mother. Similarly, in the short story, Thank you, Ma am by Langston Hughes the blue suede shoessymbolize varying ideas as the story develops. Initially, Roger, the protagonist, has a desire which is not met, to own blue suede shoes, the shoes therefore, represent a feeling of lacking. Later in the story Roger is given money to buy the shoes, at which point the shoes begin to represent his needs being met. Both Ozick and Hughes use accessories as symbols to illustrate the protagonists transitioning between gaining and lacking proper nourishment. The shawl provides Magda with sustenance and protection, which allows Magda to provide these same benefits for Rosa. In describing the shawl, Ozick writes, It was a magical shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days and three night . While the shawl provides Magda with all the nutrients she needs to survive, Magda helps Rosa feel satisfied, despite giving her food rations to Magda. Rosa gains these crucial necessities indirectly from the shawl through Magda, while Magda, on the other hand, benefits directly from the shawl. For both Magda and Rosa the shawl, in providing them with the sustenance they need, symbolizes them having their basic needs met. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl symbolizes an emptiness and dearth of nourishment. During her life, the shawl provides for Magda, which allows Rosa to reap benefit also, but once Magda dies, and the shawl no longer provides sustenance. Ozick writes, Rosa drank Magda s shawl until it dried . The shawl dries up quickly, in contrast to the constant, never ending nourishment that the shawl possessed prior to Magda s death. The dried up shawl symbolizes Rosa s lacking. Before Magda died Rosa s needs were met through Magda, however, now that Magda is gone Rosa no longer has those needs met. Today, when one reads English literature from the fourteenth century, the thought of an outdated and peculiar form of dialect comes to mind. While it is not appealing to the eyes, further examinations allow one to see how this type of lingo is the first step towards a modern vernacular. Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of The Canterbury Tales and Trolius and Criseyed, is considered the founder of this new dialect due to the foreign influences he acquired over his life. While this modernized writing style allows him to be one of the most notable authors of all time, Chaucer also tends to be recognized for his historical accuracy and social perspective. These characteristics are evident in The Canterbury Tales because they provide great insight into the fourteenth century s reflections of social adaptations, controversies within the church, and equality amongst genders. Geoffrey Chauceris an English author who was born in 1343 into an average, middle class family. During his teenage years, he was given to opportunity to work in an aristocratic household. This living arrangement gave Chaucer the chance to observe the lifestyles of the middle and upper class and how their relationships with the lower class were. These observations created a significant impact towards his distinct writing style that comically and accurately portrayed social adaptations. Such writing styles led a group of analysts to say Chaucer is credited with having set the style for modern English Literature

The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own. (Angelou, 14 18) In this stanza of the poem you can infer that the free bird is very happy with life and never thinks of anything upsetting. The upsetting things in this instance would be the racism in the story; the free bird never stops to think about the caged bird. As the summer progressed, so did our game. Trading profits and portions of companies have been a part of making money for hundreds of years, which then lead to the formation of the current complex system of trading, biding, selling and buying on the trading floor. Throughout history the intricate stock market system has become the staple of American and global economics. The idea of the stock market was born in the 1300s when moneylenders in Europe traded debts in order to unburden themselves from risky loans. These lenders first traded within themselves then individual customers, which resulted in the first investors. The Venetians led this movement with the idea to trade internationally between governments. This has not been the first time that violent injustices occurred in Mexico, but this poem shows how this event led the mexican people to realize in the violence and horror they live. Jenaro Villamil starts off the poem with the line ВїCuГЎnto horror seremos capaces de conocer? (1), which translates to, how much horror will we be capable of knowing?, this expresses how much horror they have already experienced. This source doesn t include any specific facts or dates about the tragedy, because it is a poem, but it does introduce how the students are seen by Mexico, as young humble victims. The lines that I was more impacted by that Jenaro Villamil says are: Porque aГєn con ellos vivos, sanos, salvos o heridos / No podemos callar A los olvidados que sembramos, which means, because even with them alive, safe and sound, or wounded, we cannot remain silent for the forgotten that we sowed. This segments of the poem represent the reason why the mexican people protested, and keep protesting up to now, because even though there are no signs of their bodies, they represent a part of the forgotten, who they are willing to still fight

During the 16th century, King Henry VIII would come to find himself in a bit of a pre dicament. His first wife, Catherine failed to produce a son which was unacceptable since there was such precedence in having a male heir as a successor to the throne. King Henry s answer to this would be a divorce. However, this was strictly forbidden under the laws of the Catholic Church so King Henry would start a reformation leading to the Church of England. Most of the beliefs and religious structure will stay the same apart from divorce. These shifts in religious re form would bring about many who disagreed with the fundamental beliefs of the Church of Eng land and they would come to be known as the Puritans. The Puritans were of Protestant faith and found the reformed Church of England to be still too true to the Catholic Church. This group of Protestants believed in a more simple and pure way of life with a closer relationship with God. Thus, being deemed with the title, Puritans. They felt that the Church of
