INTRODUCTION
Problem based learning is a student centered pedagogy in which students
learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open ended
problem.Students learn both thinking strategies and domain knowledge. The
problem based learning format originated from the medical school of
thought and is now used in other schools of thought too.It was developed at
the University Medical school in Canada in the 1960s and has since spread
around the world. The goals of PBL are to help students to develop flexible
knowledge effective problem solving skills, self directed learning, effective
collaboration skills and intrinsic motivation.Problem based learning is a style
of active learning. Works in groups, students identify what they need to
know, and how and where to access new information that may lead to the
resolution of the problem. The role of the instructor is to facilitate learning by
supporting, guiding, and monitoring the learning process. The tutor must
build student’s confidence to take on the problem and encourage the
students while also stretching their understanding.
TOPIC
PROBLEM BASED
LEARNING
CONTENT
Problem based learning is a good technique which is usually used to solve problems
related to the learning process. It needs creative as well as critical thinking. The pupils try
to find out many ways to solve a problem. It arose the multiple intelligence of the
students. In the problem based learning the teacher acts as a facilitator and mentor rather
than a source of solutions.
The problem based learning will provide the students with opportunities to ;
1 . Examine and try out what we know
2. Discover what you need to learn
3. Improve our communication skills.
4. State and defend positions with evidence sound argument.
5. Become more flexible in processing information
6. Practice skills that we will need after our education
In English language teaching class room we can see children
face problems regarding to the grammar , vocabulary, sentence construction etc.We can
follow the technique of inductive method to solve the problems. We can see substitution
tables inorder to construct the proper grammatical sentences.First of all, we should put
before them examples. The students will analyse the examples and they will go through
different divergent thinking process and finally reached at the correct grammatical
knowledge.
Working in groups, students identify what they already know and where to
access new information that may lead to the resolution of the problem. The
role of the instructor is to facilitate learning by supporting, guiding and
monitoring the learning process. The tutor must build student’s confidence to
take on the problem and encourage the students while also stretching their
understanding.PBL represents paradigm shift from traditional teaching and
learning philosophy, which is more often lecture based. The constructs for
teaching PBL are very different from traditional classroom teaching.
We can apply problem based learning inorder to develop their
problem solving capacity as well as thinking ability. If somebody faces any
problem in their life they can easily face the situation and solve it as early as
possible. There are several steps involved in the problem based learning.First
of all he or she faces a problematic situation and seeking different methods
to solve the problems.
CONCLUSION
Problem based learning is a technique which is used to handle the
problems. It is closely associated with Brain Based Learning. Students can
mingle with other members and discuss about the problem solving techniques.
While solving the problem we conscious about the learning outcomes derived
from the different techniques. The teacher plays a vital role in this learning.
She helps the students in this learning situation. She gives them motivation
and reinforcement. If the learning situation is a problematic one, it will help
the students to develop how to do everything with a problem solving mind
