Using Technology to Increase Academic Success
This essay will talk about how in today s modern world we can use technology to increase the
academic success of a student. Along with that, we will cover the different types of devices used
today, the World Wide Web and its search engines, how technology is used in school and what are its
downfalls, and how technology benefits distant learners and lastly how to use technology effectively.

A Constructivist approach according to Wenglisnky, H.,(2005) will use technology to help a student
better learn and understand a given topic, using visual aids, programs etc. While a didactic will do the
complete opposite. It will combine the larger picture of a scenario, going into advanced and more
complicated problems that the student can understand.
Aside from the teaching methods used in a technology based education system. There is always
constructive ways to use technology as well as unconstructive ways. In a classroom environment a
teacher may ask students to do research on a given topic, while setting standards of plagiarism and
showing students how to complete research at an early age. It can also be beneficial for students to
familiarize themselves with commonly used programs and software used in today s work industry,
such as Microsoft word and power point. It can give the student the ease and facility to find the
resources needed at his fingertips.
At the same time it can be very un constructive for a student if he or she uses technology in a
classroom for entertainment and media. While most schools and universities do a very good job in
filtering their systems so that students do not access these websites, student always find a way to get to
them. It is also possible that the use of a computer or technology can limit a student in certain
instances. For instance, a student may be given an assignment to

The Development of Christianity in America
As Christianity spread through the Western world, it rarely followed a linear path: different pockets of
faith and doctrine were developed by a variety of peoples in an even greater variety of locales.
Nowhere is this more evident than in Roman Britain and the era of Anglo Saxon migrations. In five
centuries, English religious culture transformed from one of pagan worship to that of leadership in the
Christian world. Controversies included more than merely pagan Christian dynamics; the Christians
were greatly divided, and Christian efforts went through many ebbs before becoming firmly
established. One must evaluate the development of both Rome and England to gain an adequate
understanding of early English Christianity. Fifty five years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Christianity gained a foothold in Britain by the mid second century, but had yet to gain anything
approaching religious supremacy on the island. Early Christian churches were local communal affairs
each board of elders was elected democratically by the community s inhabitants. Early Christians
refused to bow before Roman authority as the Jews had previously done, and many were persecuted as
enemies of the state (quite similar to the Druidic situation in Britain). Rome would tolerate native
religious rites, but would brook no treason. The universality of the empire, however, paved the way
for the universality of Christianity, as Christian missionaries traveled easily along Roman roads on
evangelistic expeditions. As Christianity spread throughout the empire, the Roman government found
Christian refusals to worship Roman gods and participate in Roman festivals increasingly distressing;
Christians endured persecution in the first and second centuries, but on an individualized, local scale.
The third century proved disastrous to the empire: an outbreak of the plague, increasing barbaric
invasions from the north, and fifty years of relentless civil war tarnished the image and reputation of
Rome. Manpower shortages due to plague sharply decreased trade and commerce. Persians

Conformity And Obedience To Authority In Cool Hand Luke
Social influence plays a big part in how a person acts in a situation. A person s behaviour that has been
influenced can be shown in 2 ways: Conformity, which is when a person changes their attitudes and
behaviours to fit in, and obedience to authority, which is when a person obeys orders from someone
who has a higher status than them. This essay will look at and analyze examples of conformity, non
conformity, and obedience to authority in the movie Cool Hand Luke. Cool Hand Luke It looks at the
everyday lives of prisoners, and how they cope with the many trials around them. The main character,
Luke, has to make difficult decisions which involve him conforming to a certain standard, or obeying
Conformity is when one aligns their attitudes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is shown many times throughout the movie due to the fact the movie is surrounding the lives of
prisoners. One example would be right at the beginning of the movie when new prisoners enter the
farm. When bringing up one of the prisoner s reason for why he is here, He tries to explain in an
informal but polite way that it was an accident. Boss Paul then goes up to the prisoner, hits him, and
says that he has to address the person speaking to him right now as Captain, and the others as Boss.
For the rest of the time with the Captain and the Bosses, the other prisoners continue to address them
as Captain and Boss. The other prisoners see that if they don t address the authorities as Captain or
Boss, negative consequences will follow. To avoid these negative consequences, the acknowledge
Captain and the Bosses as authority and obey their demands. Another example of obedience to
authority involves the ditch outside of the prisoners resting house. After running away for a second
time, the Bosses start to treat Luke like a slave. After all the other prisoners finished work, Boss Paul
calls Luke over, points to a ditch and asks why Luke s dirt is in Boss Keen s ditch, to which Luke
replies with I don t know Boss . Boss Paul then tells Luke to get the dirt out, so Luke proceeds to
shovel the dirt out of the ditch. Boss Shorty comes along after Luke is halfway through getting the dirt
out and asks Luke why there is dirt on his yard. Luke tells him he doesn t know and Boss Shorty tells
him to put the dirt back in, and so Luke puts the dirt back in the ditch. Boss Paul comes back and asks
him why is there still dirt in the ditch, to which Luke replies again with I don t know boss . Boss Paul
then shoves him to the ground and tells him to get the dirt out again, and Luke complies. This cycle
goes on until nighttime when all the prisoners are getting ready for bed. The bosses bully

Magazines In Canadian Culture
Strange as it may sound, Canadians truly love they re magazines. According to Magazines Canada
(2012), which is an organization funded by the Canadian government, Canadians read more
magazines per capita than any other nation in the world. This, in and of itself, should show the extent
in which magazines play a part in Canadian culture. In 1960 the Royal Commission on Publications
found that 75% of the general interest magazines bought in Canada were American publications, that
Time and Reader s Digest took 40 cents out of every dollar of magazine advertising, and that there

Analysis Of Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe...
Helen Keller once said, Walking with a fried in the dark is better than walking alone in the light. Fried
Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, The New York Times best seller, was written by Fannie
Flagg. This novel, told from a third person point of view, revolves around two characters: Evelyn
Couch and Virginia Threadgood and their friendship. Evelyn Couch, a middle aged woman encounters
Mrs. Virginia Threadgood, an old lady in a chance meeting at a nursing home in Alabama. Throughout
the book, they become friends. The book Fried Green Tomatoes shows two lonely characters, the
beginning of a friendship, and hints at their future relationship.
Evelyn seems to be in a bad state at the beginning of the book Fried Green Tomatoes. She is in her
mid forties (48), her children have moved out, and her husband seems indifferent. She is unsure of her
place in life since she is no longer raising her children and the times have changed. FGT says, Evelyn

Threadgood s chance meeting blooms into a friendship. Evelyn accidentally meets Virginia because
she is visiting her mother in law at the same nursing home. At first Evelyn just wants to be alone and
eat her candy bars in peace. On page 3 the book says, Evelyn had just escaped them both and had gone
into the visitors lounge in the back, where she could enjoy her candy bar in peace and quiet. The
moment she sat down, the old woman beside her began to talk... However, Mrs. Threadgood, the old
lady just mentioned sees her and begins telling her life story, seeming to attempt to make up for lost
time. After a while Evelyn becomes interested in Virginia s stories, and after several similar visits even
looks forward to them. Mrs. Threadgood says, She [Idgie] was a character all right, but how anybody
ever could have thought that she killed that man is beyond me (page 9). Virginia gives her advice and

United States Presidential Election Analysis
The United States presidential election is one of the most important things that happens to us as U.S
citizens. We wait four years to see if our previous president has done the job we wanted him to do, and
if not, we get to elect a knew leader of our country. The President has a lot of influence on our country,
therefore we want to elect the best one for our nation. Thus, our founding fathers created the electoral
college. Designing the mode of selecting the President had to be one of the most difficult tasks that
confronted the framers. The difficulty in the legislative case lay in the fact that almost all delegates
knew exactly what they wanted, but different delegates wanted different things: small state delegates

Both of the candidates were highly favored. Govenor of Texas George W. Bush and vice president Al
Gore watched as the results were coming in. Out of the 105,545,316 voters, it came down to just over
500,000 votes in favor of Gore (International, 2014)(don t know if should use). That statistically is a
difference of less than 1% of the people that voted. Gore had the popular vote, so he wins the election.
Many Americans thought that was the case, and unaware that the popular vote doesn t automatically
assume the presidency. Once the votes are counted, the electoral college is the final supreme step to
determine the president. The president of the United States of America is not truly elected by the
people, but by a group of 538 representatives known as the Electoral college. Every state has members
of the college, including anywhere from 3 to 55. The number of members is decided by the states
population, so yes, technically if you live in a small populated state you have less influence on who
the president will be. The members are typically local politicians of your state, and normally are
inclined to vote with the states popular vote. This type of electoral system creates a checks and
balance, similar to that of the federal branches of government in the United

Taylor B. Hart Abstract
Antisocial Personality Disorder is a very rare disorder. The criteria to be diagnosed with Antisocial
Personality Disorder has been changed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
throughout many years. The rareness of this disorder can be considered beneficial in the world
because of the way people diagnosed with it become and what they do to others. Many people
diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder find their self in prison. A variety of causes pertain to
this disorder. Very few treatments of this disorder seem to work of this that has been tested.
Researchers are still working on a better way to treat this disorder. The defense mechanisms associated
with antisocial personality disorder are quite common and the same during the course of diagnosis.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Antisocial personality disorder (APD or ASPD) is a mental disorder in which a person s approach in
any given situation as well as his style of thinking is neglecting towards others. People with this
disorder are commonly known as psychopaths or sociopaths. An individual with APD shows empathy
and disregards people s thoughts and feelings. Those with APD can be characterized as morally
reprehensible. They are the ones that seem to say all of the right things. Antisocial personality

Good Neighbor Nextdoor Problem Analysis
The Good Neighbor Nextdoor program seeks to address two problems facing communities across
America Today. The first problem is the shortage of doctors in rural and undesirable communities. The
second problem is the prevalence of blight and vacant housing in many of the same communities
suffering from a shortage of doctors. Both of these problems have solutions, by offering citizenship to
foreign doctors willing to move into communities having both a shortage of doctors and a surplus of
vacant housing. The final benefit offered by the Good Neighbor Nextdoor program will be in the long
term economic growth within the community caused by the opening of a doctor s office in the

The Noise Of Sound Waves Through Instruments And How The...
Introduction
Music takes up a large part of our lives, most people listen to it almost every day. It is one of the only
medians between People from completely different walks of life, connecting us all through major
symphonies or just beautifully simple chords. Though many people enjoy the emotion filled sound
that travel to their eardrums, most do not know exactly why. People also do not know why they dislike
some musical sounds. I am very curious as to why there are melodies considered good or bad. Just as
most people, I listen to music on the daily basis. I am also invested in learning how to play the electric
guitar which influences my interest in this topic greatly. I want to find out why exactly different
chords are considered either harmonic or discordant by looking into the consonance and dissonance in
music. In my research on this topic, I will focus mainly on the emission of sound waves through
instruments and how the notes come together. Sound travels as a transverse wave which means it takes
the same shape as sine waves, in mathematics. These waves are used to produce different volume,
frequencies, and timbre in instruments. In music, sound waves have different frequencies which
change the in pitch of notes, and different amplitudes, which change the volume of notes.
Since I will be focusing on the changing of frequencies in notes, I will represent these changes by
modeling different chords, and notes by using sine waves. This will allow me to demonstrate how

Jurassic Park is a story of how this man decides that it is a great idea to resurrect the dinosaurs. The
best scientists came together and took the tiniest form of remains possible to be able to be found. The
DNA hidden in the earth, was invaded by these people. they believed everything was under control
and they were eliminating every single possibility for these creatures to cause destruction anywhere.
They said they were going to make a theme park, enjoyable for everyone; making it possible for
people to see the magnificent wonders we have missed out on in this time. They were wrong. The

This is the banner statement or scientific ethics in all of mankind. If people stopped to think about if
they should other than that they could, we might would save ourselves a lot of trouble. Jurassic Park is
but one example; abortion and cloning are two big one in the world today. The people created Jurassic
Park only wanted money and the credit for making a scientific dream a reality. They became power
hungry and money thirsty; and it came to them after some work in a shiny box ready to be presented
to the world. Donald Gennaro, the lawyer, states, We re gonna make a fortune off this place. (21:29)
Proverbs 16:16 How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgement than silver! the people
of Jurassic Park did not think about what would go wrong; even if it is negative several lives could
have been saved. Thinking about the most miniscule details could have saved the park and made it
thrive; but they were arrogant and would not look past the outstanding work they were doing
scientifically. Ecclesiastes 3:1 There is a right time for everything, and everything on earth will

abortion is more of a cruel act. To think about a life being stripped without its own opinion is

New moms endure stress in attending to a newborn, but after such an intense labor it is crucial to
make caring for themselves a priority. Mothers deliver their babies vaginally or through a Cesarean
section, although similarities are present in caring for both, differences do arise. During childbirth they
undergo excruciating circumstances no matter which form of delivery they experience. Vaginal birth is
described as the natural from of delivery in which the baby enters the world through the vagina. A
Cesarean section, also known as C section, is defined as a surgical procedure to deliver the baby
through an incision made on the abdomen. Incisions made during delivery are dependent on how the

Vaginal delivery stiches dissolve on their own within ten days, making a Cesarean incision
increasingly more difficult to attain. If the staples entail removal, a trip to the doctor is required to
eradicate them without harm. Vaginal delivery doesn t always entail an incision, but an episiotomy is
performed majority of the time. It is possible to tear the perineum if an episiotomy is not performed,
needing stiches to repair the tear. It is important to care for the stitched perineum, as it s possible to
contract an infection like a Cesarean incision. An article I read stated, to help heal your perineum,
keep the area as clean and dry as possible ( Vaginal ). Flushing the area with a spray bottle of fresh
water is suggested, followed by properly drying it, after each bathroom visit. The main care
instruction for life after labor is to keep the openings as clean and as sanitary as possible. Although C
section and Vaginal delivery incisions are on different regions of the body and require diverse
treatment, washing the incisions with soap and warm water is a must in order to heal correctly. Giving
birth is an intense process which, unfortunately, causes misery in the aftermath. After delivery, both
types of childbirth produce pain, site and intensity of the pain determine medications needed. Location
of the incisions being in different areas is what causes the pain to be dissimilar for a Cesarean and
vaginal childbirth.

Conflict Between Men And Women
Conflict between men and women
Trifles is a short story that Susan Glaspell wrote about between men and women. It s specifically
targeting the way men attitudes were towards women. Trifles talks about a murder that is unsolved, a
country woman suspected of killing her husband in an isolated farm. Men in this short story worry
more about looking for big evidence and judging about Mrs. Wright s messy kitchen instead of
looking in her stuff for evidence. The men think that in the kitchen there is nothing important. Instead
they go to the barn and to the bedroom to find evidence. Meanwhile the women find a dead bird with a
broken neck that could mean why she killed Mr. Wright. At the end the women decide to hide the
evidence. That is because they think she had her own reasons to kill him because Mr. Wright could
have killed the bird and that it was important to Mrs. Wright. In Trifles there is a conflict between the
masculine attitudes towards women.
Men in Trifles are judgmental when they see Mrs. Wright s messy kitchen. They think that Mrs.
Wright should have cleaned up the kitchen before she left. The County Attorney thinks that a woman s
place is in the kitchen and that she should have everything cleaned up. When the County Attorney is
looking around the kitchen he opens the door of a closet and looks on the top shelf. Then he pulls his
hand away sticky and says, Here s a nice mess (1388), criticizing Mrs. Wright s kitchen. He pulls out a
roll of towels

Canada s Annual G20 Summit
In the summer of 2010, Canada s largest city had the honour of hosting the annual G20 summit to
discuss contemporary global economic issues. Given that such international events typically attract
thousands of protesters, organizers formed an Integrated Security Unit consisting of police officers
from across the country to provide security during the summit in downtown Toronto. Little did
Torontonians know, public safety and security came with the heavy price tag of surrendering certain
rights and freedoms, such as the right not to be unreasonably searched and the freedom of expression,
which are guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. According to Ombudsman Andre Marin,
Regulation 233/10, which permitted police officers to infringe on these fundamental rights and
freedoms, would almost certainly be illegal and unconstitutional under the Charter therefore its
implementation was as a result of a one time governmental error. However, Carl Schmitt argues that a
country s positive laws simply hide the actuality of sovereignty, since the sovereign is he who decides
the exception. This paper will argue that the extensive authority granted to the police during the G20
reveals the fundamental reality of the inherent need for violence in the preservation of national
sovereignty as contended by Carl Schmitt. The first part of this essay will discuss the necessity and
justification of extraordinary measures that must be taken in times of emergencies. The second part of

Personality Traits And Theories Of Personality
The term personality has been defined several times in different ways throughout the history of
psychology. A definition that captures much of what is meant by personality was described as more or
less stable, internal factors that make one person s behaviour consistent from one time to another, and
different from the behaviour other people would manifest in comparable situations by Child (1968)
(Eysenck, 1994). This definition is very broad and it includes personality traits as well as intelligence
that are considered as aspects of personality. There is a difference between moods or emotions and
personality. According to many psychologists personality is stable and does not change dramatically
over the time, whereas moods and emotions may change over shortish periods, because those can be
collated with external behaviour, on the other hand if personality determined behaviour then everyone
would behave in identical pattern to different situations. That s why there are individual differences. It
is assumed that there are such individual differences that are revealed by different ways of behaving in
different situations. That means that for example introverted people would be shyer in a social group
or in the comparison extraverted people will talk more. This leads us to personality traits. There are
many theories of personality traits such as: they are habitual patterns of behaviour, thought and
emotion (Kassin, 2004), which means that there are different patterns in

In our modern age of scientific revolution there seems to be a growing tension between the scientific

prime importance as we are created in God s image. God is the creator and sustainer of all life on this
earth. These Christian beliefs have come under more scrutiny in an age of scientific revolution.
Science thrives on seeking to provide a framework of understanding for the natural and physical world
of matter. This endeavor involves taking an ever curious approach towards the observable world and
constantly seeks to unravel more of the scientific knowledge of this world. The field is often
concerned about mechanisms and processes that drive the natural phenomena we observe. Scientific
methods often involve the formation of hypothesis from observation of matter, development of
experiments to tests hypotheses, formation of theories and models from conclusions of experiments,
and further refinement of theories to fit other data or new observations. Science often seeks to
generate laws underlying the occurrences in nature, be it the laws of thermodynamics or the
Newtonian laws of motion. Symbols, notations and mathematical equations are often used to provide
this scientific lens of understanding this world. Knowledge gained from scientific endeavor is used to
benefit humanity, in the curing of diseases and technological machinery.

Aquarium Reserch Paper
Aquarium Research Paper
Abstract:
Fresh water tanks are the most common aquariums in houses and schools, many times people that
have had a fresh water aquarium move on into a challenge by having a salt water aquarium. Fresh and
salt water aquariums have something in common, they teach you how salt and fresh water fishes live
and how they interact with other organisms. While taking care of a salt and a fresh water tank in this
experiment my data showed that taking care of a salt water tank was definitely more challenging, but
while it was more challenging it was also more educational since it provided a small look at what life
in the ocean was like. The main idea behind this experiment was to see which aquarium would be the

Procedures:
1st: Setting up the aquarium:
To set up the aquarium you first need to get a big enough aquarium, in the case of this study 21
gallons (salt water) 15 gallons (freshwater). First you need to clean the glass of the aquarium only
using water; you cannot use any chemicals (Windex, soap, etc.) After that you will need to clean either
the crushed coral or the sand (salt water) or gravel (fresh water) for the bottom of the aquarium. After
doing that you will mix the water with the sea salt (salt water only) and wait about a week checking
constantly the water parameters. While doing this you will have to do research about the fishes you
will want to add to the aquarium so you know what the water parameters need to be for the fishes.
After doing this you can start adding a live rock and two fish max to check how they react to the
water.
2nd: Adding marine life
After the aquarium has been set up and the test fishes have survived you can begin adding more fishes.
When adding new fishes you need to leave the fishes in the bag in the aquarium for about 10 minutes
so that the temperature of the fish water and aquarium water can be the same and the fish can be safely
added into the aquarium. After adding fishes you will need to feed twice or three times a day an
amount of food that the fishes can eat in a five minute time period. You will need to check water

Better Than Raising The Minimum Wage Analysis
Around 15% of American citizens live below the poverty line today, and many believe that raising the
minimum wage will lower this number. On May 21, 2015, The Wall Street Journal published an article
by Warren Buffett, Better Than Raising the Minimum Wage. Buffett writes about a cost effective way
for Americans to receive a steadier income other than raising the minimum wage. He highlights that
the everyday worker with no special skills often finds it hard to be successful. The way Buffett
proposes to fix this issue is to develop the Earned Income Tax Credit or Tax returns. Buffett used a lot
of fact based arguments and appealed to ethos, but it could not make up for the lack of pathos and a
strong argument in this article.

His main argument in this article is that the government should not raise the minimum wage, but
instead, should expand on the Earned Income Tax Credit. He believes that instead of one, yearly
payment, the government could do monthly payments. Buffett also believes that this will deter people
from taking out unnecessary loans while they are waiting for their tax returns to come through. While
this is all a great idea, he has some issues with how he presents the information. He does not talk
about any of this until the last four or five paragraphs, and there are upwards of 20 paragraphs in this
article. He spends a lot of time making a strong point, without even mentioning his actual argument
until the very end. And while he does do a good job at explaining his solution, he never tells the reader
how to fix the problem. The people reading The Wall Street Journal are business people or people who
are interested in the economy. Buffett wrote this article for those who have the power to make this
change, possibly politicians, but he does not tell them how to make his plan play out. This is really
where Buffett starts to lose his rhetoric strength, and he also struggles with the pathos part of the piece

The Future Is Green Architecture
Architecture is vital function for all parts of society. Without architects people would have to rethink
how they enter buildings, fearing roofs caving in or structural beams giving out. The rigor of an
architect s training leaves these possibilities and worries an unlikely prospect, not considered in the
day to day in a person s events. Architects make both functional and beautiful structures that are
appealing to the eye, as well as useful to the world. The world wouldn t be able to live in functional
cities without the qualities of the architect s skills. The world would have to worry about a door frame
falling on their heads as they walk through the door for their daily workday, into the building that
houses their jobs, their pay based on the efficiencies of the buildings layouts. Hopefully a person
office is the one in the corner with the view, built to capture the sights outside the window and the
prestige of the position, all thought of and created by an architect. Architects have an extremely
specialized task to perform. They have to make sure that a building is stable in all conditions and
useful and also that it looks appealing to senses, capturing the light at dawn, changing with the light at
dusk. Architects do great things and create even greater things, often unnoticed, but worthy of
mention. Architects also have very fun creative jobs where they can go to a rigorous job and make
sure everything is going as planned and the building will meet the needs

Essay Lester Little, Anger in Monastic Cursing
In Lester Little s, Anger in Monastic Curses, we see how, through liturgical cursing, monks can
express a form of anger that is acceptable and appropriate for monastic culture. This form of anger
does not undermine monks religious status in the feuding and vengeful culture of this time. Liturgical
cursing is used to formulate emotions of anger in a way that is appropriate for monastic culture to
participate in. In Aelred of Rievaulx s, Spiritual Friendship, we see a similar scenario in which Aelred
seeks to find an appropriate form of friendship for monks to engage in, apart from the not virtuous
version that aristocratic culture practices. Both forms of anger and friendship seek to not undermine
monastic culture and status. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Aelred does believe that friendship does exist in monastic culture, as well as all cultures, he
seeks to find an appropriate version of friendship. Aelred explains, Now the spiritual, which we call
true friendship, is desired not with an eye to any worldly profit or for any extraneous reason, but for its
own natural worth and for the emotion of the human heart, so that its fruit and reward is nothing but
itself (Aelred, 64). In this passage, Aelred explains how spiritual friendship is the purest and only
acceptable form of friendship for monastic culture. He describes that friendship should be for no other
purpose than for the use of human connection, expecting nothing material in return from a friend.
When introducing this concept, Aelred seeks to provide a new type of friendship, for monks, that is
separate from the aristocratic, carnal and worldly, friendships that are not virtuous and thus
unacceptable in monastic culture. In Lester Little s, Anger in Monastic Curses, Little seeks to form an
appropriate form of anger in monastic culture. Like Aelred, Little rejects anger in its current form
practiced in medieval culture as being appropriate for monks. In medieval culture, feuding and
vengeance is the acceptable way for people to express anger, however, for monks, this is not virtuous.
Little explains how liturgical cursing allows for monks to express anger in a way that does not
undermine their religious status. Liturgical cursing, in simplest form,

Sleep Restoration Theory
Nathan Skemp Rawl 12:20 4/21/17 The Function of Sleep Almost every known animal on planet
Earth spends a large portion of its life asleep. Humans who sleep an average of eight hours a night
spend about one third of their lifetime in this unconscious state of mind (Schenck). By logical
reasoning, all scientists of merit believe sleep is important since we spend an entire third of our life
participating in the activity, the disagreement between scientists occurs when discussing the purpose
of sleep. There are many theories as to why we sleep, the latest arguments revolve around the
restoration theory, brain plasticity theory, evolution theory, energy conversation theory, and the
dreaming theory. Recent research suggests the combination of two theories to accurately represent the
purpose of sleep, the restorative theory and the brain plasticity theory. These theories claim that
quality sleep promotes restoration processes within the body and brain, as well as the physical
development and growth of the body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the brain plasticity theory was created and so widely accepted by experts within
psychology and other respectable related fields of science. However, there are other functions that
occur during sleep that aren t fully explained by the brain plasticity theory, purposes that become
highlighted by the restoration theory. The restoration theory of sleep claims that sleeping is essential
for revitalizing and restoring the physiological processes that keep the body and mind healthy and
properly functioning (Foster). This theory suggests that REM sleep is what allows the brain and body
to heal itself from damaged tissues, diseases, and toxins that may accumulate in the brain or body
during the day. This theory splits the brain into two functions, awake and alert or asleep and

The Leadership Challenge Of General George S. Patton...
There are a number of qualities that quantify good leaderships and good leaders. According to Kouzes
and Posner in their book The Leadership Challenge, all successful leaders have (5) practices in
common. They Model the Way , Inspire a shared vision , Challenge the process , enable others to act
and encourage the heart (15). Never is there a more important time to have exemplary leadership, than
in a time of war. Both the American Civil War and World War II showed what was possible through
good leadership. From abolishing slavery and preserving the Union, to fighting tyranny and
oppression abroad, both events in American history had a profound impact on all those involved. The
impact would most certainly be different if not for the leadership of Colonel Lawrence Chamberlain of
the Union Army during the Civil War and General George S. Patton during World War II. Both leaders
possessed the 5 practices essential for god leadership, yet both leaders to different approaches to
accomplish their goals. The leadership of General George S. Patton can be viewed as an example of
transactional leadership. This type of leadership makes followers of an organization achieve objectives
through rewards and punishment . This can be shown in the scene in Patton where he is meeting his
new soldiers for the first time. As he is driving through the streets of North Africa, he sees his fellow
soldiers are poorly dressed and not all in uniform. Soldiers had just finished a

Religion And The Nature Of God
The Nature of God is a category that always comes into question in many conversations or debates I
have seen, and listened to and participated in, this is why I have chosen this topic. Some religions
focus on subjective experience of the religious individual while others consider activities of the
religious community to be most important.by being willing to learn and engage into the very nature of
God in different religions is an interesting topic on its own, and can be very educational as well as
informational. I will be looking at this particular category from a Christian point of this goal is to
investigate whether the view is sufficient evidence to prove that world religions are complementary
and by analyzing what religion belief is about which is a perception of someone religion and how
major some culture is are evolved.
The Nature of God tells the story in different religions, although I think this would be the significance
and play an important role in a deciding factor for someone looking into making a decision to believe
in a particular religion. By basing on how religion is and being able to believing in a religion I would
ask what are the differences in the nature of God in different religions and by studying throughout the
weeks help us in identifying key features in the Nature of God in many different religions, some have
similarities while others are completely different. For example , the similarities in Jainism, Buddhism,
and Confucianism is that there

people. And how human cloning can be bad and how it can affect us in the real world and how it can
affect our supplies on this world.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Optimism is an emotion that inspires hopefulness and confidence about the future. Optimism propels
people and novels forward. Optimism is a driving force in the novel Lord of The Flies by William
Golding and the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. In the novel Lord of the Flies ,one of the
most important emotions is optimism. Without optimism the boys would have no hope that they would
make it off the island. At the start of the novel things are not going the boys way, their plane crashes in
the middle of nowhere and they do not know what to do. The boys are in a state of chaos and they
need a leader, the leader will soon be known as protagonist of the novel, Ralph. Ralph is elected by the
boys and he is optimistic about the boys survival on the island. I m chief, said Ralph, because you
chose me . [] Besides Ralph the other 2 main leaders are Piggy and Simon. Piggy is the brains of the
group but Simon is something else. Simon is pure and genuine, he believes in the good of all of the
boys on the island and that they will survive. You ll get back to where you came from. (7.15) Ralph
and Simon are the two optimists in a time of peril and without them the group would not be able to
function.
Another important example of optimism in Lord of The Flies are the usages of signs by the boys. The
boys use these signs to help ease the reality of what is really happening on the island. Ralph decides
the boys should make a signal fire to signal air and ship traffic

Themes In For Whom The Bells Tolls
We all are put to the test by having to make sacrifices like a life or death situation. Although the
majority of those choices may be for the greater good, some can hurt others. We are put to the task,
and we have several obstacles in our way, and it is our duty to accomplish that task. In Ernest
Hemingway s For Whom the Bells Tolls, the character of Robert Jordan risks his life to fight fascism
to do his duty, take care of Maria and to wash away his father suicide.
To begin with, Robert Jordan takes care of the woman he loves, Maria. Ever since Robert Jordan went
with the reclusive group in the mountain, the two of them had empathy of love towards each other.
Robert Jordan tries to reject the adulation they have for each other because he thinks that after the
bridge is blown, they will not see each other anymore. Maria refuses to think that and shows all her
love towards him. Soon Robert Jordan seems to care more about Maria and uses their passion for each
other as a distraction from the war. Hewson states that Jordan comes to realize that he and Maria are
making an alliance against death through their love for each other (6). Their love for each other
designates them forget about everything, and all they want to do is be together. The alliance against
death that they have is significant in the story. Being together assembles them to feel powerful and
gives them both hope and strength during their hard times there. This helps out both of these

Mystical Experience, By Chris Frith
The human brain is the common thread which ties these selections of literature together. Our mind
controls our every action, thought, and dream, but do we shape our mind or does our mind shape us?
We are one and the same, our mind and ourselves, but who has more control our conscious mind or
our subconscious mind and how do we know what we know? in the required texts, Mystical
Experience, Numinous, and Making Up the Mind we discover unique perspectives on understanding
the unknown parts of the complex human psyche with the information they provide.

Women During The Victorian Era
Women in England during the Victorian Era were forced into a mold; their ideal function being
marriage and procreation. They were expected to submit to their husbands, look pretty (but not feel
passion), and learn everything having to do with sewing and entertainment (but nothing else), all while
being expected to support their family. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an educated woman in
Victorian England who was able to step out of this mold and exercise her talent for writing. Browning
admired and was inspired by a writer named George Sand. George Sand was the pseudonym that
French novelist and poet Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin took on to gain acceptance and respect from
her audience as a female author during her time. Browning marveled ... Show more content on

More importantly, Sand establishes this role herself, as Browning indicates using the words self called
. A woman deciding which gender sphere she wants to belong in for herself is a form of speaking out
against women being under the dominion of men and the society decided roles for them. This idea is
also shown in line 3 of the poem, where George Sand is illustrated as moan[ing] defiance against these
traditional roles. Browning portrays George Sand as a courageous revolutionary figure in a den of
lions (possibly and allusion to Daniel and the Lion s Den), challenging the customs of her time by
answering roar for roar (Desire 4). This visual representation of a strong, powerful being illustrates
Browning s hope that history will remember George Sand as a pure genius sanctified from blame
(Desire 12) for subverting the natural order of gender identity. This line can also be linked to religion;
sanctification is a very heavy idea in the bible. The allusion to Christianity is a challenge to the
accepted gender spheres that exist in the world. Browning is urging that intelligence and power, no
matter if in a woman or man, should be free from the scrutiny of the world. The second poem, To
George Sand: A Recognition is equally bold. In it, Browning establishes the idea that women need not

Differences Between The Medieval Catholic Church And Pietism
The Medieval Catholic Church and Pietism are both rooted in the common ideology that God desires
relationship and salvation for all. However, the two differ greatly in missiology, theology and daily
practicality. There are major points of divergence between the Medieval Catholic Church and Pietism
from which modern day Protestantism developed. Mission theology links systematic theology with
practical theology. It outlines and interprets mission systematically and practically from the
perspective of God s mission, Christ s mission, the mission of the Holy Spirit and the mission of the
Church. The true test of The Medieval Catholic Church and Pietism regardless of the merging of
missiology or the divergence of missiology is determined by how well each one meets the challenge
of the triune God s mandated definition of mission. Ultimately, one must adhere to the Great
Commission found in Matthew Chapter 28, verses 16 20. in order to accomplish a God centered
missiology.
Tradition
Pietism viewed Scripture as the governing authority of one s life. However, the Medieval Catholic
Church embraced Scripture and traditions as authoritative. In fact, Catholicism placed equal emphasis
on Scripture and tradition. According to Catholic Catechism, this living transmission, accomplished in
the Holy Spirit, is called Tradition, since it is distinct from Sacred Scripture by showing how its riches
are poured out in the practice and life of the Church, in her belief and her prayer. It

Social Effects Of Underage Drinking
Introduction
Alcohol when consumed by adults in moderation and in appropriate circumstances, may not have any
permanent physical, mental or emotional effects. On the other hand, if alcohol is consumed underage,
mixed with other drugs or drank in excess can cause many adverse effects impacting the entire body. I
will be focusing on the impacts of underage drinking due to alcohol contributing to the 3 primary
causes of death among teenagers: unintentional injuries, homicide and suicide (Australian Drug
Foundation, 2017). Moreover, 78% of 14 17 year old s have tried alcohol at least once despite 18
being the legal drinking age.
The reason alcohol is so common among teenagers is due to the social importance and integration
alcohol has in Australian society. Relatives, teachers and parents alike drink in all circumstances:
when they re sad, when they re happy and even when they re bored (National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism, 2017). These people are the most influential people in a teenager s life and by
drinking so freely, they condition the next generation to follow in their footsteps and make any excuse
to drink. I believe social exclusions and stunted learning, that underage drinking brings due to its
physical, emotional, social and mental effects can lead to an undesirable future. During adolescence,
relationships with family and friends as well as personal and educational development can define a
person s future health; so by indulging in underage drinking you

The American Dream is different for everyone, though it is most commonly associated with success,
freedom, and happiness. The concept of the American Dream seems to have dwindled from where it
was in the past few generations. It has gone from success, freedom, and happiness to having lots of
money and the nicest possessions. In today s society, we all hope and strive for this dream, but how
many actually achieve the American Dream? Is it a reasonable goal that Americans should strive for,
or is it a myth that only leads to self destruction? According to Horatio Alger and Toni Cade Bambara,

success. This formally became known as The American Dream . Although this may seem strange for
everyone to have the same idea, it really isn t when you look at it with an open perspective. Each and
every person s perception of success is extremely different and individual, which makes everyone s
dreams different. There may be people who strive for big goals, and there may be others who take it
one day at a time, achieving happiness on a less formal level. In comparing the time period of the
story to our society today, there are many similarities and differences to consider. According within
the world we live today, people tend to set much higher goals and expectations for themselves,
whereas, in Ragged Dick, it was more of a day to day type situation. When people set smaller, more
realistic goals, it results in more happiness and comfort in their lifestyle. However, in today s world,
Americans have become so incredibly competitive and successful, that the standards have been
significantly raised to the point where personal happiness is no longer good enough. After reading a

underlying message that he is trying to portray. To me, this message is to always be optimistic, and no

Roller Coasters Essay
Roller Coaster
For many people, there is only one reason to go to an amusement park: the roller coaster. Some people
call it the scream machine, with good reason. The history of this ride reflects a constant search for
greater and more death defying thrills.
How does a roller coaster work?
What you may not realize as you re cruising down the track at 60 miles an hour is that the coaster has
no engine. The car is pulled to the top of the first hill at the beginning of the ride, but after that the
coaster must complete the ride on its own. You aren t being propelled around the track by a motor or

and all of the kinetic energy you need for the ride is present once the coaster descends the first hill..
Once you re underway, different types of wheels help keep the ride smooth. Running wheels guide the
coaster on the track. Friction wheels control lateral motion (movement to either side of the track). A
final set of wheels keeps the coaster on the track even if it s inverted. Compressed air brakes stop the
car as the ride ends.
Wooden or steel coaster: Does it make a difference?
Roller coasters can be wooden or steel, and can be looping or nonlooping. You ll notice a big
difference in the ride depending on the type of material used. In general, wooden coasters are
nonlooping. They re also not as tall and not as fast, and they don t

Dyslexi A Common Condition That Affects The Way The Brain...
Dyslexia Explained
Lampkin (2015) describes Dyslexia as a common condition that affects the way the brain processes
written and spoken language. However, Handler and Fierson (2011), go a bit deeper and define it as a
receptive language based learning disability that is characterized by difficulties with decoding, fluent
word recognition, rapid automatic naming, and/or reading comprehension skills. In short, Dyslexia is a
complex reading disability that many children and adults suffer from.
Characteristics of People with Dyslexia
According to Davis (1992) there are thirty seven common characteristics of Dyslexia. Of those thirty
seven characteristics, only ten will be visually present in a student. Davis separates these
characteristics into these seven different categories: (1) General, (2) Vision, Reading, and Spelling, (3)
Hearing and Speech, (4) Writing and Motor Skills, (5) Math and Time Management, (6) Memory and
Cognition, and (7) Behavior, Health, Development, and Personality.
Learning Characteristics
According to Chall (1983) the primary deficit associated with dyslexia is phonological awareness and
there are three symptoms; Inaccurate and inefficient single word recognition, Difficulty sounding out
(decoding) unfamiliar words, and Inaccurate spelling that is the result of it. As a result of phonological
deficit, students with dyslexia exhibit slow and inaccurate text reading, poor reading comprehension,
varied difficulties with the symbol code for reading and

I also filled the graduated cyliner with 5.0mL of water, and placed the same bolt under water, and the
volume increased to 6.0mL of water, which is a 1.0mL water displacement equaling the same (1.0mL).
It is also significant to tare the scale to zero when obtaining the weight of certain objects. For instance,
I had to tare the scale after I put a beaker half full of water on the scale; by doing this it keeps the
weight at 0.0g, then I submerge the object to retrieve the volume. Exact measurements are essential.
One must be aware of the upward curve of liquids in the graduated cylinder, and always measure the
low point (bottom) of the meniscus. It would be of good practice to measure at eye level, thus insuring
a more accurate and precise measurement. In addition, I had to make sure that I used the pipet as
opposed to just pouring from a beaker or flask. This also guarantee a more accurate reading, accuracy
and precision is vital in measuring.
During my experiment I ve learned a fairly great deal about temperatures, and how to convert Celsius,
Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. In my observation I have learned that water boils at 100 degree Celsius, and
freezes at 0 degree Celsius.
In the event of my experiment, I have learned a lot about volume, mass, and density. Learned a great
deal about temperature and lab tools also. I ve learned how to calculate the percent

I Sing The Body Electric, By Walt Whitman
I Need You, Body and Soul
The poem I Sing the Body Electric, by Walt Whitman is one of the poems from the original 1855
edition of Leaves of Grass. In I Sing the Body Electric, Whitman explores the physical body in
connection with the soul. In this poem Whitman establishes the links between the body and the soul
by celebrating perfection of the male and female body and the importance the body castes upon the
soul and bodies connecting with one another. In this poem Whitman depicts the image of the perfect
body for both male and female by listing specific characteristics that our soul and physical body
connect with to make that body perfect. In I Sing the Body Electric Whitman bridges the gap between
our thoughts and our bodies, arguing that they are both one divine entity. In this writing Whitman
argues the two characteristics of this entity that rely on each other to become one and create the
masterpiece. Whitman explains how the beauty of the body is dependent upon the thoughts in our
mind and our thoughts are in turn the force that allows our body to contort beautifully in an outward
expression of movement. For example, in section one Whitman questions, And if the body were not
the soul, what is the soul? Knowing the answer Whitman continues on to answer the body is the soul,
our thoughts, our soul, is the body. In section six, Whitman explains how The male is not less the soul
nor more .
I agree with Walt Whitman in that the physical body and our thoughts, and soul

Analysis Of Boeing
Distinctive competency and competitive analysis
Distinctive competencies are organization s specific strengths which allow the company to
differentiate its products from those products which are offered by rivals (Hill, et.all,2017, p.81).
Boeing strength lies on customizing of aircraft and designing and proactively in meeting customer
demands and needs. To compete in market Boeing developed action which covers enhancing in
efficiency, quality, innovation and customer responsiveness. The development process deals with
improving the speed of R D. global sourcing of Boeing aims to achieve greater economies of scale.

government laws, regulations and policies can have significant impact on company. Boeing has deep
relationship and agreement with U.S government. And European government s regulations can be
main driving force for the purchase of new aircraft in future. There may be high level of political
intervention which can have impact on sales of aircraft. the situation of country s economy is major
factor that affects operation of Boeing. Economic factors such as; interest rate inflation rate and
currency exchange rate, positively affect the purchasing power of potential customer. in addition,
financial crisis and economic recession have forced people to reduce their spending on travel. this may
lead reduction in aircraft order. similarly, fluctuation in fuel prices and higher security cost and
insurance cost may positively impact on company. as a company is operating in multinational
environment Boeing needs to consider social factor which may affect demand and sale of aircraft.
likewise, changing needs and wants of consumer with increasing population. analyzing technological
factor in the manufacturing of Boeing aircraft usage of more carbon composites and equipment (light

Private Property Benefit Analysis
The topic I have decided to explore from this week s reading is the assertion that private property
rights are a barrier to economic growth. I agree that having a well documented and enforceable system
is necessary in protecting one s personal property rights, however the reading seems to believe that
landowners are disadvantaged because they cannot secure loans against their property. In the reading,
it is reported that Egypt has $240 billion dollars tied up in what he refers to as dead capital . (De Soto,
2000).
While I agree that a reform in the registration of land ownership would be a positive move to protect
the property rights of individuals, I believe that giving out loans to impoverished people is not a
pathway to prosperity, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Outside of the obvious environmental concerns, one prime example is the controversial Keystone XL
pipeline proposal in the United States. The path of this pipeline would cut right through the properties
of many landowners in Texas. Those who did not accept a deal with this company (from the
landowner s perspective, this is a foreign company. TransCanada is not based in the United States)
were taken to court where the tyrannical practice of eminent domain was invoked to force them to
comply. Why own land? Why pay taxes if a foreign interest can just take your property because they
want it? This affront to property rights does not get media coverage. The people who are at risk of
having their rights violated (with the blessing of the U.S. Government) are everyday people. I think
the struggle of the Texas landowners is best framed by the words of Julia Trigg Crawford; We are a
Texas family standing up to a foreign company who wants to take our land for what appears to be a
profit making endeavor (Mufson, 2012).
If property rights cannot be guaranteed in a developed nation, what chance does a developing nation
stand of having enforceable property rights? Governing bodies will always side with the financial
interests when property rights are at odds with profits. I truly do not feel that the developed world is
going to pull any nation towards prosperity by granting them property rights just to lend them

St Valentine s Day Massacre Research Paper
Crime, murder, and gangs were taking a hold of Chicago and one defining moment shocked everyone.
Two gangs, the Italian Sicilian mob and the Irish Jewish crew, had high tensions leading to many
confrontations. But the problems between the two seemed to stop after the St. Valentine s Day
Massacre on February 14, 1929. Then, the hunt for those responsible started. The crime itself involved
many people, killed many people, and even had effects after the crime. There were many well known
people of Chicago in the two groups and high tensions between gangs that would eventually lead up to
the St. Valentine s Day Massacre. The two gangs, the Italian Sicilian mob and the Irish Jewish crew,
had many confrontations but one stood out. Dion O´Banion, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Moran and his gang after the attack, had been able to hold their territory for some time, but never
really came back from the massacre ( Feb. 2). Moran s gang had also lost a lot of strength and power
in Chicago in a short time (Benson, 1). One of the surviving victims, Frank Gusenberg, could have put
the case to rest, serving those responsible, but when asked who shot him, he said, No one shot me ,
and the case was left unsolved when Gusenberg later died from his wounds ( Saint 1). The two leaders
of the attack, were the ones with the strongest alibis. Al Capone and McGurn were not charged for the
crime and seemed to be free, but one gunman, Fred Burke, was arrested for the murder of a police
officer and not for the crime (Rosenberg, 3). Although Capone was not arrested for the crime, it did
put him on the federal government s radar and they had him arrested in 1931 for tax evasion
(Rosenberg, 4). McGurn did not fare well either. One day, after the seventh anniversary of the
massacre, he was gunned down in a bowling alley, ending his career (Rosenberg, 4). The massacre
was however, the last time Capone and Moran interfered with each other. This was because Bugs was
arrested in 1946 for small time robberies and later died in jail from lung cancer. Furthermore, Capone
was arrested in 1931 ( Valentine s 2). Even though many thought they knew who ordered the attack,

The Effects Of Video Games On Today s Youth
Introduction Video games have been one of the most popular sources of entertainment for quite some
time. Video games have changed the entertainment industry and is now a billion dollar industry. The
industry has also effected society. Of course, there are some benefits of using video games, but there
are also many negative effects of the use of video games, especially on today s youth. According to
NPD, ninety one percent of children from the age of two to seventeen play video games (Camp, 2011).
In terms of the population of the youth, that is nearly sixty four million children (Camp, 2011).
According to Dino Grandoni, children play from one to three hours of video games per day (Grandoni,
2014). With these facts, it is obvious that the use of video games will have some physical, mental, and
social effects on the child, especially if the child becomes addicted to playing video games. The
consequences of playing these games in an addictive manner includes physical issues, psychological
issues, as well as issues connecting with people in the real world. Physical Problems Of course video
games can be fun or even relaxing. However, is playing as a fictional character in a fictional realm
worth the physical problems that can arise from constantly playing? Playing video games for too long
puts stress on the body s immune system, muscles, and even the brain (video game addiction). Also,
the addiction of video games can cause a child to maintain poor hygiene habits as well as poor

The Legality Of Drug Testing In The Workplace
Drug Testing in the Workplace There has been great controversy regarding the topic of drug testing in
the workplace. Employees fear the thought of being tested, while employers use it as a tool to make
decisions. Arguments concerning the legality of drug tests has sparked many political debates.
However, employers receive reinsurance of safety and health issues with implemented pre
employment drug testing as well as randomized or ongoing drug tests. Most private employers have
the luxury establish their own regulations regarding drug testing in the workplace, unless they are
obligated to follow Federal regulations. One association related to this arrangement is the U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT), in this case all employees must be drug tested. Any Federal
agency that uses drug testing in their company are suggested to follow standardized procedures by the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. A typical test which evaluates of the
presence of drugs or alcohol are urine drug tests, blood drug tests, hair drug tests, breathalyzer drug
tests, mouth swab (saliva) drug tests and sweat drug screens. The reason why they take into account
the Mental Health Services is because employees who (for example) take medications such as
Adderall for ADHD may show positive results for amphetamines, and may cost someone their job
even if the drug enhances their ability to perform. Considering that drug testing is personal health
information and could be in

Aside from the teaching methods used in a technology based education system. There is always constructive ways to use technology as well as unconstructive ways. In a classroom environment a teacher may ask students to do research on a given topic, while setting standards of plagiarism and showing students how to complete research at an early age. It can also be beneficial for students to familiarize themselves with commonly used programs and software used in today s work industry, such as Microsoft word and power point. It can give the student the ease and facility to find the resources needed at his fingertips. At the same time it can be very un constructive for a student if he or she uses technology in a classroom for entertainment and media. The Development of Christianity in America As Christianity spread through the Western world, it rarely followed a linear path: different pockets of faith and doctrine were developed by a variety of peoples in an even greater variety of locales. Nowhere is this more evident than in Roman Britain and the era of Anglo Saxon migrations. In five centuries, English religious culture transformed from one of pagan worship to that of leadership in the Christian world. Controversies included more than merely pagan Christian dynamics; the Christians were greatly divided, and Christian efforts went through many ebbs before becoming firmly established. One must evaluate the development of both Rome and England to gain an adequate understanding of early English Christianity. Fifty five years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christianity gained a foothold in Britain by the mid second century, but had yet to gain anything approaching religious supremacy on the island. Early Christian churches were local communal affairs each board of elders was elected democratically by the community s inhabitants. Early Christians refused to bow before Roman authority as the Jews had previously done, and many were persecuted as enemies of the state (quite similar to the Druidic situation in Britain). Rome would tolerate native religious rites, but would brook no treason. The universality of the empire, however, paved the way for the universality of Christianity, as Christian missionaries traveled easily along Roman roads on evangelistic expeditions. As Christianity spread throughout the empire, the Roman government found Christian refusals to worship Roman gods and participate in Roman festivals increasingly distressing; Christians endured persecution in the first and second centuries, but on an individualized, local scale. The third century proved disastrous to the empire: an outbreak of the plague, increasing barbaric invasions from the north, and fifty years of relentless civil war tarnished the image and reputation of Rome. • 4. Conformity And Obedience To Authority In Cool Hand Luke Social influence plays a big part in how a person acts in a situation. A person s behaviour that has been influenced can be shown in 2 ways: Conformity, which is when a person changes their attitudes and behaviours to fit in, and obedience to authority, which is when a person obeys orders from someone who has a higher status than them. This essay will look at and analyze examples of conformity, non conformity, and obedience to authority in the movie Cool Hand Luke. Boss Paul then goes up to the prisoner, hits him, and says that he has to address the person speaking to him right now as Captain, and the others as Boss. For the rest of the time with the Captain and the Bosses, the other prisoners continue to address them as Captain and Boss. The other prisoners see that if they don t address the authorities as Captain or Boss, negative consequences will follow. To avoid these negative consequences, the acknowledge Captain and the Bosses as authority and obey their demands. Another example of obedience to authority involves the ditch outside of the prisoners resting house. After running away for a second time, the Bosses start to treat Luke like a slave. After all the other prisoners finished work, Boss Paul calls Luke over, points to a ditch and asks why Luke s dirt is in Boss Keen s ditch, to which Luke replies with I don t know Boss . Boss Paul then tells Luke to get the dirt out, so Luke proceeds to shovel the dirt out of the ditch. Boss Shorty comes along after Luke is halfway through getting the dirt out and asks Luke why there is dirt on his yard. Luke tells him he doesn t know and Boss Shorty tells him to put the dirt back in, and so Luke puts the dirt back in the ditch. Boss Paul comes back and asks him why is there still dirt in the ditch, to which Luke replies again with I don t know boss . It is one of the only medians between People from completely different walks of life, connecting us all through major symphonies or just beautifully simple chords. Though many people enjoy the emotion filled sound that travel to their eardrums, most do not know exactly why. People also do not know why they dislike some musical sounds. I am very curious as to why there are melodies considered good or bad. Just as most people, I listen to music on the daily basis. I am also invested in learning how to play the electric guitar which influences my interest in this topic greatly. I want to find out why exactly different chords are considered either harmonic or discordant by looking into the consonance and dissonance in music. In my research on this topic, I will focus mainly on the emission of sound waves through instruments and how the notes come together. Sound travels as a transverse wave which means it takes the same shape as sine waves, in mathematics. These waves are used to produce different volume, frequencies, and timbre in instruments. In music, sound waves have different frequencies which change the in pitch of notes, and different amplitudes, which change the volume of notes. Since I will be focusing on the changing of frequencies in notes, I will represent these changes by modeling different chords, and notes by using sine waves. This will allow me to demonstrate how ... It s specifically targeting the way men attitudes were towards women. Trifles talks about a murder that is unsolved, a country woman suspected of killing her husband in an isolated farm. Men in this short story worry more about looking for big evidence and judging about Mrs. Wright s messy kitchen instead of looking in her stuff for evidence. The men think that in the kitchen there is nothing important. Instead they go to the barn and to the bedroom to find evidence. Meanwhile the women find a dead bird with a broken neck that could mean why she killed Mr. Wright. At the end the women decide to hide the evidence. That is because they think she had her own reasons to kill him because Mr. Wright could have killed the bird and that it was important to Mrs. Wright. In Trifles there is a conflict between the masculine attitudes towards women. Men in Trifles are judgmental when they see Mrs. Wright s messy kitchen. They think that Mrs. Wright should have cleaned up the kitchen before she left. The County Attorney thinks that a woman s place is in the kitchen and that she should have everything cleaned up. • 18. Personality Traits And Theories Of Personality The term personality has been defined several times in different ways throughout the history of psychology. A definition that captures much of what is meant by personality was described as more or less stable, internal factors that make one person s behaviour consistent from one time to another, and different from the behaviour other people would manifest in comparable situations by Child (1968) (Eysenck, 1994). This definition is very broad and it includes personality traits as well as intelligence that are considered as aspects of personality. There is a difference between moods or emotions and personality. According to many psychologists personality is stable and does not change dramatically over the time, whereas moods and emotions may change over shortish periods, because those can be collated with external behaviour, on the other hand if personality determined behaviour then everyone would behave in identical pattern to different situations. That s why there are individual differences. It is assumed that there are such individual differences that are revealed by different ways of behaving in different situations. That means that for example introverted people would be shyer in a social group or in the comparison extraverted people will talk more. This leads us to personality traits. There are many theories of personality traits such as: they are habitual patterns of behaviour, thought and emotion (Kassin, 2004), which means that there are different patterns in ... First you need to clean the glass of the aquarium only using water; you cannot use any chemicals (Windex, soap, etc.) After that you will need to clean either the crushed coral or the sand (salt water) or gravel (fresh water) for the bottom of the aquarium. After doing that you will mix the water with the sea salt (salt water only) and wait about a week checking constantly the water parameters. While doing this you will have to do research about the fishes you will want to add to the aquarium so you know what the water parameters need to be for the fishes. After doing this you can start adding a live rock and two fish max to check how they react to the water. 2nd: Adding marine life After the aquarium has been set up and the test fishes have survived you can begin adding more fishes. When adding new fishes you need to leave the fishes in the bag in the aquarium for about 10 minutes so that the temperature of the fish water and aquarium water can be the same and the fish can be safely added into the aquarium. • 22. Better Than Raising The Minimum Wage Analysis Around 15% of American citizens live below the poverty line today, and many believe that raising the minimum wage will lower this number. On May 21, 2015, The Wall Street Journal published an article by Warren Buffett, Better Than Raising the Minimum Wage. Buffett writes about a cost effective way for Americans to receive a steadier income other than raising the minimum wage. He highlights that the everyday worker with no special skills often finds it hard to be successful. The way Buffett proposes to fix this issue is to develop the Earned Income Tax Credit or Tax returns. Buffett used a lot of fact based arguments and appealed to ethos, but it could not make up for the lack of pathos and a strong argument in this article. This piece does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His main argument in this article is that the government should not raise the minimum wage, but instead, should expand on the Earned Income Tax Credit. He believes that instead of one, yearly payment, the government could do monthly payments. Buffett also believes that this will deter people from taking out unnecessary loans while they are waiting for their tax returns to come through. While this is all a great idea, he has some issues with how he presents the information. He does not talk about any of this until the last four or five paragraphs, and there are upwards of 20 paragraphs in this article. He spends a lot of time making a strong point, without even mentioning his actual argument until the very end. And while he does do a good job at explaining his solution, he never tells the reader how to fix the problem. The people reading The Wall Street Journal are business people or people who are interested in the economy. Without architects people would have to rethink how they enter buildings, fearing roofs caving in or structural beams giving out. The rigor of an architect s training leaves these possibilities and worries an unlikely prospect, not considered in the day to day in a person s events. Architects make both functional and beautiful structures that are appealing to the eye, as well as useful to the world. The world wouldn t be able to live in functional cities without the qualities of the architect s skills. The world would have to worry about a door frame falling on their heads as they walk through the door for their daily workday, into the building that houses their jobs, their pay based on the efficiencies of the buildings layouts. Hopefully a person office is the one in the corner with the view, built to capture the sights outside the window and the prestige of the position, all thought of and created by an architect. Architects have an extremely specialized task to perform. They have to make sure that a building is stable in all conditions and useful and also that it looks appealing to senses, capturing the light at dawn, changing with the light at dusk. Architects do great things and create even greater things, often unnoticed, but worthy of mention. Essay Lester Little, Anger in Monastic Cursing In Lester Little s, Anger in Monastic Curses, we see how, through liturgical cursing, monks can express a form of anger that is acceptable and appropriate for monastic culture. This form of anger does not undermine monks religious status in the feuding and vengeful culture of this time. Liturgical cursing is used to formulate emotions of anger in a way that is appropriate for monastic culture to participate in. In Aelred of Rievaulx s, Spiritual Friendship, we see a similar scenario in which Aelred seeks to find an appropriate form of friendship for monks to engage in, apart from the not virtuous version that aristocratic culture practices. While Aelred does believe that friendship does exist in monastic culture, as well as all cultures, he seeks to find an appropriate version of friendship. Aelred explains, Now the spiritual, which we call true friendship, is desired not with an eye to any worldly profit or for any extraneous reason, but for its own natural worth and for the emotion of the human heart, so that its fruit and reward is nothing but itself (Aelred, 64). In this passage, Aelred explains how spiritual friendship is the purest and only acceptable form of friendship for monastic culture. He describes that friendship should be for no other purpose than for the use of human connection, expecting nothing material in return from a friend. When introducing this concept, Aelred seeks to provide a new type of friendship, for monks, that is separate from the aristocratic, carnal and worldly, friendships that are not virtuous and thus unacceptable in monastic culture. In Lester Little s, Anger in Monastic Curses, Little seeks to form an appropriate form of anger in monastic culture. Like Aelred, Little rejects anger in its current form practiced in medieval culture as being appropriate for monks. In medieval culture, feuding and vengeance is the acceptable way for people to express anger, however, for monks, this is not virtuous. Little explains how liturgical cursing allows for monks to express anger in a way that does not undermine their religious status. Liturgical cursing, in simplest form, ... Humans who sleep an average of eight hours a night spend about one third of their lifetime in this unconscious state of mind (Schenck). By logical reasoning, all scientists of merit believe sleep is important since we spend an entire third of our life participating in the activity, the disagreement between scientists occurs when discussing the purpose of sleep. There are many theories as to why we sleep, the latest arguments revolve around the restoration theory, brain plasticity theory, evolution theory, energy conversation theory, and the dreaming theory. They Model the Way , Inspire a shared vision , Challenge the process , enable others to act and encourage the heart (15). Never is there a more important time to have exemplary leadership, than in a time of war. Both the American Civil War and World War II showed what was possible through good leadership. From abolishing slavery and preserving the Union, to fighting tyranny and oppression abroad, both events in American history had a profound impact on all those involved. The impact would most certainly be different if not for the leadership of Colonel Lawrence Chamberlain of the Union Army during the Civil War and General George S. Patton during World War II. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an educated woman in Victorian England who was able to step out of this mold and exercise her talent for writing. Browning portrays George Sand as a courageous revolutionary figure in a den of lions (possibly and allusion to Daniel and the Lion s Den), challenging the customs of her time by answering roar for roar (Desire 4). This visual representation of a strong, powerful being illustrates Browning s hope that history will remember George Sand as a pure genius sanctified from blame (Desire 12) for subverting the natural order of gender identity. However, the two differ greatly in missiology, theology and daily practicality. There are major points of divergence between the Medieval Catholic Church and Pietism from which modern day Protestantism developed. Mission theology links systematic theology with practical theology. It outlines and interprets mission systematically and practically from the perspective of God s mission, Christ s mission, the mission of the Holy Spirit and the mission of the Church. The true test of The Medieval Catholic Church and Pietism regardless of the merging of missiology or the divergence of missiology is determined by how well each one meets the challenge of the triune God s mandated definition of mission. Ultimately, one must adhere to the Great Commission found in Matthew Chapter 28, verses 16 20. in order to accomplish a God centered missiology. Social Effects Of Underage Drinking Introduction Alcohol when consumed by adults in moderation and in appropriate circumstances, may not have any permanent physical, mental or emotional effects. On the other hand, if alcohol is consumed underage, mixed with other drugs or drank in excess can cause many adverse effects impacting the entire body. I will be focusing on the impacts of underage drinking due to alcohol contributing to the 3 primary causes of death among teenagers: unintentional injuries, homicide and suicide (Australian Drug Foundation, 2017). Relatives, teachers and parents alike drink in all circumstances: when they re sad, when they re happy and even when they re bored (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2017). These people are the most influential people in a teenager s life and by drinking so freely, they condition the next generation to follow in their footsteps and make any excuse to drink. Davis separates these characteristics into these seven different categories: (1) General, (2) Vision, Reading, and Spelling, (3) Hearing and Speech, (4) Writing and Motor Skills, (5) Math and Time Management, (6) Memory and Cognition, and (7) Behavior, Health, Development, and Personality. Learning Characteristics According to Chall (1983) the primary deficit associated with dyslexia is phonological awareness and there are three symptoms; Inaccurate and inefficient single word recognition, Difficulty sounding out (decoding) unfamiliar words, and Inaccurate spelling that is the result of it. As a result of phonological deficit, students with dyslexia exhibit slow and inaccurate text reading, poor reading comprehension, varied difficulties with the symbol code for reading and ... I also filled the graduated cyliner with 5.0mL of water, and placed the same bolt under water, and the volume increased to 6.0mL of water, which is a 1.0mL water displacement equaling the same (1.0mL). It is also significant to tare the scale to zero when obtaining the weight of certain objects. For instance, I had to tare the scale after I put a beaker half full of water on the scale; by doing this it keeps the weight at 0.0g, then I submerge the object to retrieve the volume. Exact measurements are essential. One must be aware of the upward curve of liquids in the graduated cylinder, and always measure the low point (bottom) of the meniscus. It would be of good practice to measure at eye level, thus insuring a more accurate and precise measurement. In addition, I had to make sure that I used the pipet as opposed to just pouring from a beaker or flask. This also guarantee a more accurate reading, accuracy

In my observation I have learned that water boils at 100 degree Celsius, and freezes at 0 degree Celsius. In the event of my experiment, I have learned a lot about volume, mass, and density. • 45. I Sing The Body Electric, By Walt Whitman I Need You, Body and Soul The poem I Sing the Body Electric, by Walt Whitman is one of the poems from the original 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass. In I Sing the Body Electric, Whitman explores the physical body in connection with the soul. In this poem Whitman establishes the links between the body and the soul by celebrating perfection of the male and female body and the importance the body castes upon the soul and bodies connecting with one another. In this poem Whitman depicts the image of the perfect body for both male and female by listing specific characteristics that our soul and physical body connect with to make that body perfect. In I Sing the Body Electric Whitman bridges the gap between our thoughts and our bodies, arguing that they are both one divine entity. In this writing Whitman argues the two characteristics of this entity that rely on each other to become one and create the masterpiece. Whitman explains how the beauty of the body is dependent upon the thoughts in our mind and our thoughts are in turn the force that allows our body to contort beautifully in an outward expression of movement. For example, in section one Whitman questions, And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul? Knowing the answer Whitman continues on to answer the body is the soul, our thoughts, our soul, is the body. In section six, Whitman explains how The male is not less the soul nor more . I agree with Walt Whitman in that the physical body and our thoughts, and soul ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Private Property Benefit Analysis The topic I have decided to explore from this week s reading is the assertion that private property rights are a barrier to economic growth. I agree that having a well documented and enforceable system is necessary in protecting one s personal property rights, however the reading seems to believe that landowners are disadvantaged because they cannot secure loans against their property. In the reading, it is reported that Egypt has $240 billion dollars tied up in what he refers to as dead capital . (De Soto, 2000). While I agree that a reform in the registration of land ownership would be a positive move to protect the property rights of individuals, I believe that giving out loans to impoverished people is not a pathway to prosperity, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Outside of the obvious environmental concerns, one prime example is the controversial Keystone XL pipeline proposal in the United States. The path of this pipeline would cut right through the properties of many landowners in Texas. Those who did not accept a deal with this company (from the landowner s perspective, this is a foreign company. TransCanada is not based in the United States) were taken to court where the tyrannical practice of eminent domain was invoked to force them to comply. Why own land? Why pay taxes if a foreign interest can just take your property because they want it? This affront to property rights does not get media coverage. The people who are at risk of having their rights violated (with the blessing of the U.S. Government) are everyday people. I think the struggle of the Texas landowners is best framed by the words of Julia Trigg Crawford; We are a Texas family standing up to a foreign company who wants to take our land for what appears to be a profit making endeavor (Mufson, 2012). If property rights cannot be guaranteed in a developed nation, what chance does a developing nation stand of having enforceable property rights? Governing bodies will always side with the financial interests when property rights are at odds with profits. I truly do not feel that the developed world is going to pull any nation towards prosperity by granting them property rights just to lend them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. St Valentine s Day Massacre Research Paper Crime, murder, and gangs were taking a hold of Chicago and one defining moment shocked everyone. Two gangs, the Italian Sicilian mob and the Irish Jewish crew, had high tensions leading to many confrontations. But the problems between the two seemed to stop after the St. Valentine s Day Massacre on February 14, 1929. Then, the hunt for those responsible started. The crime itself involved many people, killed many people, and even had effects after the crime. There were many well known people of Chicago in the two groups and high tensions between gangs that would eventually lead up to the St. Valentine s Day Massacre. The two gangs, the Italian Sicilian mob and the Irish Jewish crew, had many confrontations but one stood out. Dion O´Banion, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moran and his gang after the attack, had been able to hold their territory for some time, but never really came back from the massacre ( Feb. 2). Moran s gang had also lost a lot of strength and power in Chicago in a short time (Benson, 1). One of the surviving victims, Frank Gusenberg, could have put the case to rest, serving those responsible, but when asked who shot him, he said, No one shot me , and the case was left unsolved when Gusenberg later died from his wounds ( Saint 1). The two leaders of the attack, were the ones with the strongest alibis. Al Capone and McGurn were not charged for the crime and seemed to be free, but one gunman, Fred Burke, was arrested for the murder of a police officer and not for the crime (Rosenberg, 3). Although Capone was not arrested for the crime, it did put him on the federal government s radar and they had him arrested in 1931 for tax evasion (Rosenberg, 4). McGurn did not fare well either. One day, after the seventh anniversary of the massacre, he was gunned down in a bowling alley, ending his career (Rosenberg, 4). The massacre was however, the last time Capone and Moran interfered with each other. This was because Bugs was arrested in 1946 for small time robberies and later died in jail from lung cancer. Furthermore, Capone was arrested in 1931 ( Valentine s 2). Even though many thought they knew who ordered the attack, there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. The Effects Of Video Games On Today s Youth Introduction Video games have been one of the most popular sources of entertainment for quite some time. Video games have changed the entertainment industry and is now a billion dollar industry. The industry has also effected society. Of course, there are some benefits of using video games, but there are also many negative effects of the use of video games, especially on today s youth. According to NPD, ninety one percent of children from the age of two to seventeen play video games (Camp, 2011). In terms of the population of the youth, that is nearly sixty four million children (Camp, 2011). According to Dino Grandoni, children play from one to three hours of video games per day (Grandoni, 2014). With these facts, it is obvious that the use of video games will have some physical, mental, and social effects on the child, especially if the child becomes addicted to playing video games. The consequences of playing these games in an addictive manner includes physical issues, psychological issues, as well as issues connecting with people in the real world. Physical Problems Of course video games can be fun or even relaxing. However, is playing as a fictional character in a fictional realm worth the physical problems that can arise from constantly playing? Playing video games for too long puts stress on the body s immune system, muscles, and even the brain (video game addiction). Also, the addiction of video games can cause a child to maintain poor hygiene habits as well as poor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. The Legality Of Drug Testing In The Workplace Drug Testing in the Workplace There has been great controversy regarding the topic of drug testing in the workplace. Employees fear the thought of being tested, while employers use it as a tool to make decisions. Arguments concerning the legality of drug tests has sparked many political debates. However, employers receive reinsurance of safety and health issues with implemented pre employment drug testing as well as randomized or ongoing drug tests. Most private employers have the luxury establish their own regulations regarding drug testing in the workplace, unless they are obligated to follow Federal regulations. One association related to this arrangement is the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), in this case all employees must be drug tested. Any Federal agency that uses drug testing in their company are suggested to follow standardized procedures by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. A typical test which evaluates of the presence of drugs or alcohol are urine drug tests, blood drug tests, hair drug tests, breathalyzer drug tests, mouth swab (saliva) drug tests and sweat drug screens. The reason why they take into account the Mental Health Services is because employees who (for example) take medications such as Adderall for ADHD may show positive results for amphetamines, and may cost someone their job even if the drug enhances their ability to perform. Considering that drug testing is personal health information and could be in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
