Vocabulary
Introduction:
 Vocabulary has been recognized as crucial to
language use in which insufficient vocabulary
knowledge to the learners led to difficulties in
second language learning.
What is vocabulary ?
 Broadly defined, vocabulary is knowledge of words and
word meanings.
Vocabulary is “all the words know and used by a
particular person”.
 vocabulary is the foundation of language, our most
effective communication tool.
Advance
Vocabulary Building……
 Vocabulary building means increasing the vocabulary.
 Vocabulary development refers to the knowledge of
stored information about the meanings and
pronunciations of words necessary for communication.
 Knowledge of word parts can play a role in increasing
our vocabularies. Word parts include prefixes, suffixes,
and root words.
Importance of Advance vocabulary
building…
 Roughly 90% of the time, self-expression is done through
words. You can't express what you want to if you don't know
the words to say. Many people find themselves stumped when
it comes to written and spoken communication because they
have trouble organizing their thoughts and because the right
words tend to elude them.
 Most of your vocabulary development takes place through
reading, specially when it comes to a second language or a
foreign language.
Vocabulary Instruction…
 Vocabulary refers to the words we must know to
effectively communicate.
Types of vocabulary:
 Listening- words needed to understand what we
hear.
 Speaking- words used when speaking.
 Reading- words needed to understand what we read.
 Writing- words used in writing.
Vocabulary Instruction…
Research says…
 Most vocabulary is learned indirectly, but some
must be directly taught.
Indirect Learning Direct Learning

•Reading independently
•Explicitly taught words and
word-learning strategies
Strategies……
Three strategies for improving vocabulary:
1. Improve student’s overall reading skills.
2. Read aloud to them.
3. Direct instruction of vocabulary using a
variety of strategies i.e. mapping, variety of
activities with small group of words.
Learning Process…
 Learning vocabulary is a very important part of learning a
language. The more words you know, the more you will be able
to understand what you hear and read; and the better you will be
able to say what you want to when speaking or writing.
 Every day we hear or read many new English words. we also
find them in your dictionary when you are translating from our
own language. we can’t possibly learn all these new words, so
our first problem is to decide which ones to concentrate on.

 We should Learn the words that are important to the
subjects we are studying.
 Learn the words that we read or hear again and again.
 say the words many times (if you have an electronic
dictionary you can hear how the word is pronounced).
 put the words into different groups (we could use a
graphic organizer) .

 Learn the words that we know we will often
want to use yourself.
 write the words in a notebook (with their
translations or definitions.
 write the words and definitions on small cards .

Students should build on multiple sources
of information to learn words through
multiple exposure.
Read to Improve your
Vocabulary…
 Even as little as 15 or 20 minutes per day over a
long period of time (a year).
 It is important to read a significant quantity of
material (about 20 pages each day, 100 pages each
week).
 Read a variety of material.
 Read consistently – everyday.
Read to Improve your
Vocabulary…
 Read consistently – everyday.
 You can stop reading a book before finishing it
and choose another one.
 Read books that are challenging to improve your
vocabulary.
 Keep an informal daily journal of your reading.
Conclusion…
Vocabulary is central to English language teaching
because without sufficient vocabulary students
cannot understand others or express their own ideas.
 I believe English language students generally would
concur, yet learning vocabulary also helps students
master English for their purposes.

  • 5. Introduction:  Vocabulary has been recognized as crucial to language use in which insufficient vocabulary knowledge to the learners led to difficulties in second language learning.
  • 6. What is vocabulary ?  Broadly defined, vocabulary is knowledge of words and word meanings. Vocabulary is “all the words know and used by a particular person”.  vocabulary is the foundation of language, our most effective communication tool.
  • 7. Advance Vocabulary Building……  Vocabulary building means increasing the vocabulary.  Vocabulary development refers to the knowledge of stored information about the meanings and pronunciations of words necessary for communication.  Knowledge of word parts can play a role in increasing our vocabularies. Word parts include prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
  • 8. Importance of Advance vocabulary building…  Roughly 90% of the time, self-expression is done through words. You can't express what you want to if you don't know the words to say. Many people find themselves stumped when it comes to written and spoken communication because they have trouble organizing their thoughts and because the right words tend to elude them.  Most of your vocabulary development takes place through reading, specially when it comes to a second language or a foreign language.
  • 9. Vocabulary Instruction…  Vocabulary refers to the words we must know to effectively communicate. Types of vocabulary:  Listening- words needed to understand what we hear.  Speaking- words used when speaking.  Reading- words needed to understand what we read.  Writing- words used in writing.
  • 10. Vocabulary Instruction… Research says…  Most vocabulary is learned indirectly, but some must be directly taught. Indirect Learning Direct Learning •Conversations •Being read to •Reading independently •Explicitly taught words and word-learning strategies
  • 11. Strategies…… Three strategies for improving vocabulary: 1. Improve student’s overall reading skills. 2. Read aloud to them. 3. Direct instruction of vocabulary using a variety of strategies i.e. mapping, variety of activities with small group of words.
  • 12. Learning Process…  Learning vocabulary is a very important part of learning a language. The more words you know, the more you will be able to understand what you hear and read; and the better you will be able to say what you want to when speaking or writing.  Every day we hear or read many new English words. we also find them in your dictionary when you are translating from our own language. we can’t possibly learn all these new words, so our first problem is to decide which ones to concentrate on.

Continuous…..  We should Learn the words that are important to the subjects we are studying.  Learn the words that we read or hear again and again.  say the words many times (if you have an electronic dictionary you can hear how the word is pronounced).  put the words into different groups (we could use a graphic organizer) .
  • 14. Continuous…..  Learn the words that we know we will often want to use yourself.  write the words in a notebook (with their translations or definitions.  write the words and definitions on small cards .
  • 15. Research Synthesis… Students should build on multiple sources of information to learn words through multiple exposure.
  • 16. Read to Improve your Vocabulary…  Even as little as 15 or 20 minutes per day over a long period of time (a year).  It is important to read a significant quantity of material (about 20 pages each day, 100 pages each week).  Read a variety of material.  Read consistently – everyday.
  • 17. Read to Improve your Vocabulary…  Read consistently – everyday.  You can stop reading a book before finishing it and choose another one.  Read books that are challenging to improve your vocabulary.  Keep an informal daily journal of your reading.

Conclusion… Vocabulary is central to English language teaching because without sufficient vocabulary students cannot understand others or express their own ideas.  I believe English language students generally would concur, yet learning vocabulary also helps students master English for their purposes. “Learning vocabulary can be fun! Please fill out the evaluations and leave them on the front table”
