Afghanistan and India go beyond the traditionally strong relations at

1. The Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India Pipeline (TAPI),
also known as Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline, is a natural gas
pipeline being developed by the Asian Development Bank.
 Bilateral trade
India’s bilateral trade with Afghanistan stood at $684.47 million in
2014-15, an increase of 0.20 per cent over $683.10 million a year
earlier, and 20.41 per cent higher than $568.44 million in 2010-11.
India’s exports to Afghanistan in 2014-15 stood at $ 422.56 million,
while its imports from Afghanistan were worth $261.91 million.
Despite the lack of direct land access, India is the second-largest
destination for Afghan exports.

Chabahar port is located on the Arabian Sea’s Makran
coast in Sistan and Baluchistan Province. It is the only
Iranian port with direct access to the Indian Ocean.
Being close to Afghanistan and the Central Asian
countries of e.g; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan etc., it has
been termed the “Golden Gate” to these land-locked
countries.India and Iran first agreed to plans to
develop Shahid Beheshti port in 2003, but did not do so
on account of sanctions against Iran.

US senators questioned whether India's development of a port in
southern Iran for trade access risked violating international sanctions,
and a State Department official assured them the administration would
closely examine the project.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged up to $500 million to
develop the Iranian port of Chabahar, to try to give his country trade
access to Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia. The route is currently all
but blocked by Pakistan, long at odds politically with India.
