Frantz Fanon was a prominent anti-colonial thinker from Martinique who published the influential book Black Skin, White Masks. In it, he drew on his personal experiences with racism and discrimination in France to explore the psychological impact of colonialism. Fanon analyzed how colonialism created rigid binaries between black and white identities and the trauma of being viewed only through the white gaze. He also critiqued how using the French language compromised black identity and "whitened" colonized people. Fanon concluded the book by advocating for reclaiming one's own identity and understanding others beyond colonial stereotypes.
