13. Materials- What is rattan?
 Rattan - the name for the roughly 600 species of palms trees
 superficially similar to bamboo-but stems are more solid than bamboo
 Have been known to grow up to hundreds of metres long.
 Rattan is much easier to harvest, requires simpler tools and is much
easier to transport.
 It provides a profitable crop that depends on rather than replaces trees
 Processed into several products to be used as materials in furniture and
basket making
 good material- lightweight, durable, suitable for outdoor use, and—to a
certain extent—flexible
 Other uses -shelter material, artificial bone(early 2010)
Demerits of rattan furniture :
• Expensive as handmade and from the plants
• In changeable climate, material soon looses shape and becomes brittle.

 Becoming increasingly popular as a stylish low-maintenance
 Commonly referred to as plastic rattan
 Isn’t made of PVC material that isn’t safe for health, but high-grade HDPE.
 Major advantage of synthetic rattan furniture - stands up to years of different kind
of climate, wash or wipe dirt with water.
 For construction frame- a frame of aluminum -has a lot of advantages when
compared with ordinary wood, doesn’t rust, making it safe and convenient for
health
 Other materials such as iron, steel, or wood can also be used
 The synthetic rattan furniture combined with the foam and fabric, waterproof
cover( waterproof cushions)
 Waterproof fabric cover-outdoor , help for foam to prevent rapid deterioration
 High aesthetic value and very exotic and artistic.
