Scaling Up mHealth in Developing Countries - White Paper Commissioned by Adva...Jeannine Lemaire
Presentation on my white paper on scaling up mHealth in developing countries -- presented at the First Ladies Summit | Official Side Event of the UN High Level Meeting (2011) in NYC.
The document discusses using mobile health (mHealth) technologies to improve maternal and child health outcomes. It describes the Text4Baby program, launched in 2010, which sends free text messages with health information to new mothers. The program aims to reach underserved groups and develop evidence on changing health behaviors. It also outlines a national evaluation framework for Text4Baby across several domains including reach, engagement, education, and sustainability.
This document discusses the challenges of measuring sustainability, partnerships, and health systems changes. It notes that these concepts are hard to measure due to complicated implementing structures, multi-dimensional problems, abstract concepts, and multiple pathways to outcomes. The document provides some examples of more straightforward metrics like training outcomes and sustainability measures. It also examines issues like assessing related but separate organizations and roles, and determining the contributors to strengthened health systems and population health. Throughout, it emphasizes the need for prioritizing what can reasonably be measured given limitations of feasibility, plausibility, and utility.
Patient engagement report for Californiamikekirkwood
The Patient Engagement Group met weekly with 40 members to develop models for engaging patients through a health information exchange (HIE). They created an innovation pyramid and use cases to make the HIE mobile, easy to use, and focused on empowering patients. Success would be measured by engagement metrics like users, views, and time spent. The group envisioned the HIE becoming a social network and personal data asset, with scenarios like real-time care receipts, medication reminders, and care coordination between patients and providers. The roadmap establishes a framework and incentives to leverage the HIE for improved care.
Lessons Learned from OVC Evaluations for Future Public Health EvaluationsMEASURE Evaluation
Three key lessons learned from OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) evaluations for future public health evaluations:
1) Evaluations need to be designed and incorporated from the beginning of projects rather than as an afterthought, but it is difficult to attract attention to evaluations early on.
2) There are methodological challenges to conducting rigorous impact evaluations of public health programs including non-random placement of programs, lack of suitable control groups, and inability to control for external factors.
3) Evaluations require strong leadership and buy-in from stakeholders to facilitate data collection and use of findings to improve programs. Early and continued engagement of stakeholders is important.

This document discusses how funders can encourage good measurement practices among grantees. It outlines the impact cycle that funders should follow, which includes agreeing on a measurement plan, collecting impact data, analyzing findings, and sharing lessons learned. The document also notes that while most funders currently collect outcome data and support measurement, grantee capacity is often an issue. Finally, it describes different models of funding - responsive, targeted, and single goal oriented - and which types of impact measurement each approach should focus on or ensure.

How Do We Evaluate That? Evaluation in the Uncontrolled WorldMEASURE Evaluation
This document summarizes the main challenges to conducting rigorous impact evaluations of global health programs operating in real-world settings. It discusses several proposed approaches to address these challenges, including adequacy, plausibility and probability assessments, national evaluation platforms, step-wise approaches, and mixed methods. Common themes across different approaches include starting with a program's causal model, measuring progress along the causal pathway including implementation, using multiple existing and new data sources, and focusing on producing actionable results for decision making.
Mobile health (mHealth) technologies can help community health workers (CHWs) improve their performance through data-driven management. mHealth systems collect data on CHW activities and client outcomes that supervisors can use for supportive supervision, feedback, and incentives to motivate high performance. Successful mHealth requires organizational changes, technical support, training, and scaling capabilities to fully utilize data and sustain results over time. A maturity model outlines five stages programs progress through to maximize mHealth's impact from initial demonstrations to integrated, long-term solutions.

Chromium is commonly used to make alloys and protect other materials from corrosion. It is extracted commercially from the mineral chromite using the thermite process, which involves a reduction-oxidation reaction with aluminum. This process requires substantial heat energy. Some common alloys containing chromium include ferrochrome, used to make stainless steel, and chromel and stellite, known for their heat and corrosion resistance. While chromium recycling is not large-scale currently due to abundant reserves, it may become more important in the future as ores are depleted.
