Abstract:
Currently, there is a convergence of three key factors in the global landscape that creates an opportunity for the research community to make fundamental contributions to improving the quality of life of every single citizen. Conversely, failure to recognize and act on this phenomenon may have disastrous effects on multiple levels. The first factor is the unprecedented focus and willingness to invest in the healthcare industry. The second factor is the fact that the prime directive of the healthcare sector, i.e. nothing interferes with the delivery of care, has ramifications on every aspect of information technology used in this domain. The final factor is the recognition that patient empowerment and buy-in will be critical for the advance of health information technology. These factors highlight the fact that there are inherent assumptions in the existing access models that render them ineffective and not applicable for long term use in the healthcare field.
This talk will highlight all these issues and challenge the research community to delve more the industry-specific constraints that require further innovation in the space; possibly necessitating a re-examination of the core assumptions in the field.

Tyrone Grandison is currently the Program Manager for Core Healthcare Services in the Healthcare Transformation group of the IBM Services Research organization (Hawthorne, New York). His immediate interests are in developing innovative solutions for ensuring patient privacy protection and for integrating information from multiple sources to get more complete views of patients to enable better decision making. Prior to this, Tyrone led the Intelligent Information Systems (Quest) team in the Computer Science department at the IBM Almaden Research Center (San Jose, California). The team pioneered research in Relational Database Privacy, Disclosure-Compliant Query Processing for RFID and Mobile Data Networks, Security Exception Handling in Healthcare Information Systems and Large Scale Text Analysis of Online Data. Information technology has transformed almost all the sectors, and health care is a sector where technology has worked to improve efficiency and productivity. The quality of services offered to patients and the ease of storing and retrieving patient information. Information technology has further enhanced the security of information with data encryption. Despite these huge benefits of IT in technology, officers within the health system have a huge role in ensuring that healthcare IT system is efficient.

The chief information officer and the chief technology officer are two roles that are related but important within the healthcare setting. The CIO is responsible for developing and advancing technology use in healthcare facilities. The CIO has to involve all health officers with the use of IT systems to improve the quality of services. CIOs work by identifying critical areas and creating roles for healthcare personnel. The CTO on the other monitors the development of technologies in the market and identify those that can be useful in health care (Sultz & Young, 2013). The person in charge is more knowledgeable on technology issues as they evaluate and determine technologies that can better healthcare provision. Together with the CIO, the CTO can help in the evaluation of technologies to determine if they will offer value for investment before advising the management on the right path to pursue.
The CIO and CTO have expert knowledge of IT infrastructure and are therefore better placed in helping staff in enhancing patient satisfaction. The two identify training needs for all the staff that ensure that the staff understands how to use IT systems. They can additionally provide real-time help to clients using the web portal of the hospital (Kellermann & Jones, 2013). They can additionally come up with real-time phone calls whenever staff and patients need help. Undoubtedly, there has been a paradigm shift in the delivery of healthcare due to technological advancement. Nurse informaticist are now able to utilize information technology and advance technology to make informed decision in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients (Laureate Education, 2018b).
Nurses and other health professionals are now able to carry out their duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner due to the evolution of informatics. Even though, there is more room for improvement, technological advancement and the evolution of information technology has contributed immensely to the training, acquisition of knowledge, skills, and the disposition of nurses. This technological advantage enables nurses to provide safe, quality, and efficient patient care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015).
Clearly, the change in technology and informatics in the organization that I worked for has been incredibly substantial. The organization has moved from the era of paper charting when nurses had to document patient information by handwriting to using the Electronic Medical records (EMR) and eventually to the Electronic Health Records (EHR). Also, nurses used to receive handwritten orders including prescriptions from physicians which gave room for misinterpretations and errors. Currently the patient’s prescriptions are entered into the EHR which eliminates the potential for misinterpretation (Laureate Education, 2018a).
One of the newer trends in information technology in my organization is the ability to transmit patients’ vital signs from the dynamap machine directly into the EHR. Prior to the introduction of the dynamap, nurses and nurse’s assistant had to manually input this information into the EHR which was time consuming and gave room for potential errors (Rao-Gupta et al., 2018).
Evidently, the advent of the EHR and other health information technology devices have had significant impact on the delivery of safe, quality, and efficient care. However, it is important to note that due to the enormous volume of data receive in the EHR, nurses and informaticist sometimes need to weed out irrelevant and redundant information. Another pitfall associated with the transmission of data from the dynamap to the EHR is the failure to synchronize properly due to connectivity problem. This may cause some data to be missing and nurses must manually input the missing data (Laureate Education, 2018a).

Patient care decisions should be supported by timely clinical information, reflecting the best evidence possible (Institute of Medicine 2013). Present and future professional nurses must be able to use informatics and technology to facilitate critical decision-making for optimal patient outcomes (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative 2016). Nursing clinical informatics competencies involve the collection and use of patient data for analysis and dissemination. Nursing informatics with computer science was established to create innovative ways to provide quality care to our patients. Evidence based practice is a cornerstone to making NI better for the future. Without EBP there would be no such thing.
What I see for the future is that technology would be expanding at a faster rate. There would be less hands on and more robotics. What I mean by this is that robots would be administering meds at the bedside, documenting task, and even doing patient consults. I believe that this would be in the near future to come because it would cut the need for nursing staff in half and it would be cost effective for the company. The only thing that would be the downfall to this is that robots do not pose interpersonal skills so patient questions would go unanswered and in would block the communication to building a rapport. We have already advanced to telemedicine which in some cases can be beneficial to the patient being seen by the physician.
Another thing that would probably be good for the up and coming future would be if we could use the pyxis like we use Alexa and Siri. If we could give them voice commands where it could dispense patient medications that are due just by giving the first and last name of the patient would cut down on the time spent pulling meds. Instead of your taking 30mins to 1 hour pulling meds could just take about 15 to 20 mins. Modern technology is advancing so much that some of us cannot not keep up with the new demands of the workplace. In nursing we are always learning new things and we must continue to learn as we advance in our careers in order to be successful. New media offer new possibilities in teaching and learning. However, the appropriation of new knowledge and skills in dealing with technology, especially for older adults, is a critical challenge. This needs to be considered against the background of the digital divide. Which describes, among other things, the lack of information on the ability of older adults to use technology among those who have access to ICTs and new media in healthcare. In conclusion informatics will be changing for the better.

As has been previously stated in this journal, it remains to be seen if wound care practitioners will pool their limited resources and harness the power of their electronic health records to battle the “giant of healthcare reform.”1 This country’s push to enact and substantiate quality of care delivery can be seen through the uniting of clinical practice with increasingly sophisticated digital technology that allows for more accurate documentation and communication. For good reason, the focus of this union is being placed on the perspective of the patient (ie, how the patient receives healthcare information). Undoubtedly, there has been a paradigm shift in the delivery of healthcare due to technological advancement. Nurse informaticist are now able to utilize information technology and advance technology to make informed decision in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients (Laureate Education, 2018b).
Nurses and other health professionals are now able to carry out their duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner due to the evolution of informatics. Even though, there is more room for improvement, technological advancement and the evolution of information technology has contributed immensely to the training, acquisition of knowledge, skills, and the disposition of nurses. This technological advantage enables nurses to provide safe, quality, and efficient patient care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015).
Clearly, the change in technology and informatics in the organization that I worked for has been incredibly substantial. The organization has moved from the era of paper charting when nurses had to document patient information by handwriting to using the Electronic Medical records (EMR) and eventually to the Electronic Health Records (EHR). Also, nurses used to receive handwritten orders including prescriptions from physicians which gave room for misinterpretations and errors. Currently the patient’s prescriptions are entered into the EHR which eliminates the potential for misinterpretation (Laureate Education, 2018a).
One of the newer trends in information technology in my organization is the ability to transmit patients’ vital signs from the dynamap machine directly into the EHR. Prior to the introduction of the dynamap, nurses and nurse’s assistant had to manually input this information into the EHR which was time consuming and gave room for potential errors (Rao-Gupta et al., 2018).
Evidently, the advent of the EHR and other health information technology devices have had significant impact on the delivery of safe, quality, and efficient care. However, it is important to note that due to the enormous volume of data receive in the EHR, nurses and informaticist sometimes need to weed out irrelevant and redundant information. Another pitfall associated with the transmission of data from the dynamap to the EHR is the failure to synchronize properly due to connectivity problem. This may cause some data to be missing and nurses must manually input the missing data (Laureate Education, 2018a).

Patient care decisions should be supported by timely clinical information, reflecting the best evidence possible (Institute of Medicine 2013). Present and future professional nurses must be able to use informatics and technology to facilitate critical decision-making for optimal patient outcomes (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative 2016). Nursing clinical informatics competencies involve the collection and use of patient data for analysis and dissemination. Nursing informatics with computer science was established to create innovative ways to provide quality care to our patients. Evidence based practice is a cornerstone to making NI better for the future. Without EBP there would be no such thing.
What I see for the future is that technology would be expanding at a faster rate. There would be less hands on and more robotics. What I mean by this is that robots would be administering meds at the bedside, documenting task, and even doing patient consults. I believe that this would be in the near future to come because it would cut the need for nursing staff in half and it would be cost effective for the company. The only thing that would be the downfall to this is that robots do not pose interpersonal skills so patient questions would go unanswered and in would block the communication to building a rapport. We have already advanced to telemedicine which in some cases can be beneficial to the patient being seen by the physician.
Another thing that would probably be good for the up and coming future would be if we could use the pyxis like we use Alexa and Siri. If we could give them voice commands where it could dispense patient medications that are due just by giving the first and last name of the patient would cut down on the time spent pulling meds. Instead of your taking 30mins to 1 hour pulling meds could just take about 15 to 20 mins. Modern technology is advancing so much that some of us cannot not keep up with the new demands of the workplace. In nursing we are always learning new things and we must continue to learn as we advance in our careers in order to be successful. New media offer new possibilities in teaching and learning. However, the appropriation of new knowledge and skills in dealing with technology, especially for older adults, is a critical challenge. This needs to be considered against the background of the digital divide. Which describes, among other things, the lack of information on the ability of older adults to use technology among those who have access to ICTs and new media in healthcare. In conclusion informatics will be changing for the better.

For wound care providers and other clinicians, 2017 continued to bring about a chaotic storm of healthcare reform based on quality measures, data registry requirements, and documentation standards. As has been previously stated in this journal, it remains to be seen if wound care practitioners will pool their limited resources and harness the power of their electronic health records to battle the “giant of healthcare reform.”1 This country’s push to enact and substantiate quality of care delivery can be seen through the uniting of clinical practice with increasingly sophisticated digital technology that allows for more accurate documentation and communication. For good reason, the focus of this union is being placed on the perspective of the patient (ie, how the patient receives healthcare information). However, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a need for clinicians to be armed with devices that more easily and effectively facilitate the means to that end. This article will discuss the proliferation of healthcare-related digital apps that are both patient and clinician focused in an attempt to lay a foundation for wound care clinicians to become more technologically savvy and clinically compliant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

interpretation and utilization presents with an issue if no qualified personnel is available to

to pursue enhancement in technology and innovation with regards to the health care sector
and patient care safety, one potential benefit associated with data safety, legislation and
patient care is the ease at which a patient can get attended to by a physician or a mid level
provider at the comfort of their home using either a tele conference approach or a video
platform like zoom. The down side or potential risk concomitant with this mode of patient
care is associated to cases that require the physical presence of a provider or a physician in
cases of emergency where the situation requires a one on one attention as in the case of
doing invasive procedures or extensive surgeries. “Telehealth is still a new and evolving
technology; while the offsite interventions or contacts often lead to less time being wasted
on non – care oriented task because of the efficiencies offered by the technology
applications, its use must never be associated with less care.” (McGonigle, 2017,
p361) Following from the disruption in the normal work flow of the health care
sector due to the COVID 19 pandemic, some of the health care technology trends I believe
are most promising for inputting health care technology in nursing practice include the use
of advancements in tele medicine which presents with advantages in no over head or staff
to maintain, no rent or space to pay in the case of stand alone private clinics whose owners
pay a premium to utilize an assigned space for their respective practices. Given our present
global circumstance of COVID 19 pandemic, I will say for the time being, the use of zoom
calls and advancements in tele medicine is the best alternative to a face to face contact with
a patient, since quite a lot can be accomplished using a phone line and or a video call with
the exception of limitations to cases that require invasive approach or emergency
intervention like the need to intubate a patient. “In a connected care environment, more
citizens are engaging in their health care through mobile apps and social media tools. Given
this growing health care engagement, it is important for health care professionals to have

PostSome of the healthcare technology trends that I have observed in my nursing practice
are telehealth and electronic MAR. This electronic technology was created for providers to
get information in real-time and it is only accessible to qualified staff. (HealthIT.gov, 2018c).
We still paper chart at our detox, mental health hospital so these two technologies are used
at work. We have only had electronic MARs for a few years but it does collect data that we
use for clinical decisions. One of the challenges of the e-MAR is the lack of knowledge on
how to use the system. This is more of a physician problem than a nursing problem
although new nurses or PRN nurses who have never used the system or have not been
trained enough on the system can find it challenging. When physicians do not know how to
use the system correctly they typically put in orders wrong, especially when a patient is on a
detox medication taper. This is dangerous because if you have a new nurse or a PRN nurse
4. and a physician who does not know how to use the system, then medication errors can and
do happen.One benefit to the e-MAR is data safety. With the e-MAR, we can scan their
armband or look a patient up by their name and date of birth. Once this information is
entered by a nurse, the patient’s e-MAR profile comes up and this is where you can go over
medications, allergies, or any other important information that needs to be verified. There
are also risks when it comes to e-MARs. For example, data safety can be a concern. Even
though technology has their patient’s data information as a priority, there are security and
privacy issues. For example, how consent is obtained and patient trust plays a part in the
safety of data. If trust is not kept, then patients may not be willing to give important
information when seeking care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017 pp. 284-285).Another benefit
to e-MARs is due to legislation. There is legislation in place to protect patient information.
The government uses the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as legislation. It
protects patients by addressing development, adoption, and implementation (McGonigle &
Mastrian, 2017 p.149). A risk for data safety for the e-MAR is if a nurse leaves the computer
up and on a patient’s profile. Another patient can easily see what is on the screen. This does

wrong medication is given. Many of the patients that come into the hospital are not in the
right mind at the time of admission. As a hospital, we rely on the data collected and entered
into the system before they receive medications. Collecting data can be a risk to the patient
which would lead to poor patient care.In today’s world, many people in the community are
taking responsibility for their healthcare and that is being done by using mobile apps and
social media (Skiba, 2017). These technology trends are most promising for impacting
nursing practice and impacting patient outcomes. Mobile apps and social media impact
nursing practice because they provide a tool to help in educating patients. For example, as
you educate your patients, you can guide them to the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) for further information. Many times, patients do not have questions until
a later time and this will allow them to take initiative in their care. These trending
technologies are a great tool for nurses to utilize in their practice and will continue to
impact their nursing practice. Technology is not going anywhere soon so as nurses, we need
to embrace these tools and use them to our advantage. When nurses provide reliable
resources, the patients will be less like to surf the web for the answers to their health
